Univision and Los Angeles Archdiocese Partner to Offer Mass on Local TV Channel

Parishioners from the largest Catholic archdiocese in the country can now access Spanish-language Mass on local TV in the wake of the novel coronavirus that has led to the cancellation of the public services.

Through a partnership between Univision television network in Los Angeles and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the Spanish-language morning Masses from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels are now being broadcast through the network’s local UniMás KFTR-TV on Channel 46. The morning Mass services are offered at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday and on Sunday.

Carolina Guevara, a spokeswoman for the archdiocese, said this service helps fill a void for the large number of parishioners who are Spanish-speaking, as well as for those who may not have social media access. Guevara said more than 70% of the archdiocese’s parishioners are Latino.

The archdiocese spans the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara.

Guevara said this service does not cost the archdiocese any money and will go on “as long as this crisis continues.”

Luis Patiño, president and general manager of Univision Los Angeles, said “this is purely a service to our community.”

“These are unprecedented times and we believe it is our social responsibility to help provide Mass for the thousands of faithful who cannot leave their homes,” Patiño said.

Patiño said Univision has broadcast Mass in the past, airing the celebratory service in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles on March 16 announced the suspension of Masses amid the COVID-19 health threat. Just days before the announcement, parishes in the archdiocese had been allowed to host restricted public Masses with a limit of 250 people.

Before the pandemic, the archdiocese was already livestreaming Sunday Masses from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on Facebook and YouTube.

Catholic media are also airing Masses in English and Spanish on cable, radio and through the internet on El Sembrador (ESNE) TV/Radio, Guadalupe Radio, Relevant Radio and The Catholic Channel on Sirius XM.

“Our Catholic community is doing our part to limit the spread of this global public health threat by suspending Masses at all parishes for the first time in the history of our Archdiocese,” said Archbishop José H. Gomez in a statement.

“Even though we cannot publicly gather in communion to celebrate our faith together during these difficult times, I encourage our faithful to continue to participate in the Holy Mass via television, radio and online so that we may continue to pray together for the Lord’s grace and mercy in our time of need,” he added.

During Sunday’s virtual Mass, Gomez prayed for those suffering from the coronavirus and urged Catholics to maintain their faith.

“This week, as we enter another week of these challenging times, week of sacrifices and hardship, let us try to walk by the light of Christ,” Gomez said.

“We know that there are many people praying for healing,” Gomez said. “We need to believe in the promises of Jesus, especially in these days when things seem so uncertain.”

Catholics can find a listing of available livestreams and broadcasts of Masses in the archdiocese at lacatholics.org/mass-for-the-homebound.

Daniel Whyte III Tells “Church Leaders”, Pastors, and President Trump What to Do to Stay the Plague or Millions Will Die and America as We Know It Will Be Facing the Abyss

Welcome to the How to Stay the Coronavirus Plague Briefing Podcast #6. My name is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International.

Deuteronomy 28:59 says, “Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance.”

The Bible Knowledge Commentary says, “In carrying out the curses on disobedient Israel, God would undo all the previous blessings He had lavished on her. Whereas Israel had previously escaped the fearful plagues and diseases of Egypt, God would bring them on Israel. He would also bring other kinds of sickness not recorded in this Book of the Law. Whereas God had multiplied her number as the stars in the sky, Israel would be reduced to a few in number. Once she lived in security, but now she would live in anxiety, despair, and in constant suspense and fear for her life.”

Leonard Ravenhill said, “The Church right now has more fashion than passion, is more pathetic than prophetic, is more superficial than supernatural.”

2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Revelation 2:18-24 says:

18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass;

19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.

20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.

21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.

22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.

23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.

2 Samuel 24:9-15 says:

9 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

10 And David’s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the Lord, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O Lord, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

11 For when David was up in the morning, the word of the Lord came unto the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,

12 Go and say unto David, Thus saith the Lord, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

13 So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days’ pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

14 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the Lord; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.

15 So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men.

1. Mr. President, God is not going to allow you to open up the country or even part of the country successfully by Easter, neither will most churches be packed on Easter Sunday morning as you would like. That is a great thought but that will not be happening. Therefore, we are calling on you to go ahead and shut down the nation completely and immediately for at least a full thirty days. Please understand Mr. President even though you may be very smart when it comes to politics and the economy, this is not a political issue and this is not an economic issue and it is really not a medical issue, it is a spiritual issue. And until the spiritual issue of sin in the church, in the government, and in the nation is dealt with, the plague will not be stopped.

2. As I have already told you, if you want this plague to be stayed or stopped, you need to ask Franklin Graham, Jack Graham, Tony Evans, Dwight McKissic, John MacArthur and Anne Graham Lotz to lead a massive nationwide prayer time morning, noon, and night, each day in churches across the nation and publicly at the White House. And basically what you can do is have Franklin Graham or someone appointed by Franklin Graham to open up your briefing everyday with prayer. As you know Mr. President, this is not unprecedented as many presidents in the past have done something similar. We do not want to get into this with you, you can let Paula White keep her job so she can support her family but you need to remove her from over your advisory council and replace her with Franklin Graham or someone else. And these people and others need to lead all churches to publicly denounce all of the sins that are common in the church today such as: adultery, fornication, taking God’s blessings for granted, unthankfulness, ungratefulness, child molestation, and the church’s increasing support of homosexuality, homosexual marriage, homosexual adoption, and the homosexual agenda.

3. You need to immediately roll back everything that President Obama has done regarding having the government to sanction homosexuality, homosexual marriage, and the homosexual agenda, including starting something in the lower level courts that would go to the Supreme Court to overturn the decision regarding homosexuality, homosexual marriage and the homosexual agenda just as you did about abortion. You must understand Mr. President, that God hates all sin but He especially has a problem with the abomination of homosexuality because it is a satanic attempt to turn God’s world upside down. You need to take back and apologize for what you said in support of homosexuality, homosexual marriage, and the homosexual agenda. And you need to immediately remove the openly homosexual Ambassador Richard Grenell from over United States National Intelligence. Mr. President, one of the main reasons why God worked a miracle and put you in office was to turn back the foolishness that President Obama started of sanctioning men with men and women with women and to this point you have not done so probably because of your friend and mentor Roy Cohn who was an openly homosexual man and died of AIDS and because of your daughter and son-in-law who have many dealings with the homosexual community. If you don’t do what I’m telling you, you will go down in history as one of the worst presidents along with Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter and you will lose your legacy just like Obama has lost his legacy.

CHURCH

Matthew 18:20 says, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

Jason Helopoulos said, “A Christian home must be centered upon Christ, and if it is centered upon Christ, then it will be filled with worship. Most Christians are aware of the importance of secret and corporate worship, but fewer have even heard of family worship. What is family worship? It is pretty simple. Tonight, sit down with your family on the couch or at the dinner table. And then pray together, read the Bible together, and sing a great hymn of the faith together. There are many reasons for doing family worship, but let us just mention a handful. Family worship glorifies and honors God. Family worship has the wonderful effect of centering our homes upon Christ.” And daily Family worship will not always make family life easier but it should be better. And it will give each family the grace to deal with other family members providing each family member is saved.

——

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 18:8: “Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

If you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior today, please email me at [email protected] and let us know. There is some free material that we want to send you. If you have a prayer request, please e-mail that to us as well, and we will pray for you until you tell us to stop.

God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.

Hobby Lobby Clarifies Coronavirus Sick Leave Policy amid Accusations

Hobby Lobby Clarifies Coronavirus Sick Leave Policy amid Accusations

(RNS) — Hobby Lobby says it does allow employees to take paid time off if sick amid the pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus, despite criticism to the contrary, and will offer some pay to employees in the event of a store closure.

However, it remains to be seen whether the company will amend its policies to provide additional relief for workers who contract COVID-19, as some other companies have done.

The retail giant told Religion New Service in a statement that it provides both “vacation benefits and personal paid time off benefits to employees.”

“Personal paid time off benefits can generally be used for sick leave or other needs,” a statement from the company said.

Claims that the company was denying employees sick leave sparked frustration among some religious communities. The advocacy group Faithful America launched an online petition criticizing Hobby Lobby CEO David Green for “refusing to show the same decency” as other companies that have offered “employees enough paid sick leave for coronavirus treatment.”

As of Tuesday afternoon (March 31), the petition had accrued more than 15,000 signatures.

On March 23, Randy Betts, Hobby Lobby’s vice president of store operations, reportedly wrote an internal memo in which he stated that the company “is going to make every effort to continue working the employees” and that sick workers would either need to exhaust all…

Anyone you meet could be infected: How faith empowers us to face the unknown

By now you’ve seen the prediction that the US death toll from COVID-19 could rise above 100,000 people. We could see 2,214 deaths a day at the nation’s peak in two weeks.

One of the most difficult dimensions of this disease is the degree to which it can be transmitted by people who show no symptoms.

The director of the CDC was asked this week if his agency has learned anything new about the virus in recent weeks. He stated that “a significant number of individuals that are infected remain asymptomatic. That may be as many as 25 percent. That’s important, because now you have individuals that may not have any symptoms that can contribute to transmission, and we have learned that in fact they do contribute to transmission.”

He added that those who develop symptoms are “shedding significant virus . . . probably up to forty-eight hours before [they] show symptoms.”

In other words, every person we meet could infect us with a deadly virus, whether they know it or not. And we could have the virus while being asymptomatic and infect others.

I am not aware of an analogous medical condition to this. More Americans die from heart disease and cancer than any other causes. However, neither can be “caught” from someone who doesn’t know they have the condition.

To find an historical parallel, we need to go back more than a century.

“Fear moved ahead of the virus”

According to the CDC, “The 1918 influenza pandemic was the most severe pandemic in recent history.” It is estimated that around 500 million people—one-third of the world’s population—became infected with the virus. The number of deaths is estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide, with about 675,000 in the US.

Trump Applauds Franklin Graham for Fighting Coronavirus: ‘He Loves Jesus’

Trump Applauds Franklin Graham for Fighting Coronavirus: ‘He Loves Jesus’

President Trump on Tuesday commended the work of Samaritan’s Purse, calling its founder Franklin Graham a “very special” person who is making a difference in the fight against COVID-19.

Samaritan’s Purse set up a 68-bed emergency field hospital in New York City’s Central Park and is partnering with Mount Sinai Health System. The field hospital will care for those who have the coronavirus.

Trump was asked about Graham during Tuesday’s Coronavirus Task Force press conference.

“I just spoke to him today for an extended period of time,” Trump said. “I told him what a fantastic job you’re doing, and … he loves doing it. He loves helping people. And he loves Jesus — that I can tell you. He loves Jesus. He’s a great gentleman.”

Graham appeared on FoxNews’ Hannity program Tuesday, saying the field hospital has about 70 doctors, nurses and technicians.

“We’ve got an incredible group of men and women that respond in Jesus’ name when there’s a crisis,” Graham said. “… This is a desperate situation. … And we’ve got people there that have experience dealing with infectious diseases.”

“… We’re going to give them the best medical care that we possibly can, in Jesus’ name.”

Graham requested prayer for the medical workers. He also urged Americans to set “aside their politics for a few weeks.”

“This is the time … that all of us need to come…

WATCH: Bishop T.D. Jakes Leads MSNBC Broadcast in Prayer Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

The “TODAY” show’s Craig Melvin, who has returned from a voluntary quarantine after being potentially exposed to the new coronavirus, asked Texas megachurch pastor and televangelist, Bishop T.D. Jakes, to pray on “MSNBC Live,” saying he’s “never done this on the air” but many are not being able to attend church.

“For folks who weren’t able to get to church yesterday … I’ve never actually done this on the air. Can you lead us in prayer for 30 seconds?” Melvin asked Jakes, senior pastor of The Potter’s House megachurch in Dallas, Texas, Monday morning, according to NewsBusters.

Jakes said, “Yes, I can.”

The megachurch pastor prayed, “Our Father and our God, we bow our heads to you in humility, understanding that we are not competent in and of ourselves to handle this kind of global calamity.”

He continued, “We look to you, Lord, to be the source, the strength, the help, the light that we need, strengthen our first responders, strengthen even our broadcast people, strengthen all of us whose lives have been devastated and disrupted and give us the peace that passes all understanding. In Christ’s name we pray, amen.”

Earlier on the show, Melvin told Bishop Jakes, “[i]n times of crisis and in times of uncertainty, a lot of Americans turn to faith” or “religion for comfort and solace” even though “[i]t’s no longer practical to pray or gather in person as we know,” according to NewsBusters.

How Not to Get Overwhelmed by the Pandemic

How Not to Get Overwhelmed by the Pandemic

(RNS) — Robert J. Wicks, a psychologist and professor emeritus at Loyola University Maryland, is an expert on resilience, self-care and the prevention of secondary stress — the pressures we experience when reaching out to others. His book “Perspective: The Calm within the Storm” addresses how both first-responders and the general public can deal with these topics. As the COVID-19 crisis strains our ability to overcome anxiety and grief, we reached out to Wicks for some much-needed context.

This email interview with Wicks has been edited for clarity and length.

The uncertainty of this pandemic is medical, economic and emotional. What do you mean by perspective and how do we keep it?

A healthy perspective is a portal to resilience. That is, it helps us avoid unnecessary suffering and enables us to better embrace the joy and support around us. It does this by alerting us to pick up our emotions so we can stop, reflect and review our thinking, which can become distorted in a crisis. For example, we can react in extreme ways. Some panic, others fall into a sense of minimization and denial, still others project the blame onto some thing or person or foreign nation in order to maintain a distance from the reality that exists.

You frequently cite religious thinkers in your work. What does religion have to say about keeping perspective?

Buddhists speak about it as the “unobstructed vision” and Hindus, in the…

Should Americans Wear Masks to Slow Spread of Coronavirus?

As COVID-19 continues to spread, Americans are seeking ways to protect themselves against the virus.

In the latest move, a recommendation for everyone to begin wearing masks in public is under active consideration.

It is an issue that was addressed at Tuesday’s White House Coronavirus Task Force Briefing.

“It’s just being considered by the task force now about whether that recommendation that already exists relevant to wearing masks should be altered in any way,” said Dr. Deborah Birx. “So, it’s still under discussion.”

“You can get a mask,” added the President.  “Most people have scarves. Scarves are very good. They can use a scarf and we’re only talking about a limited period of time. And it says in the recommendations you can substitute a scarf for a mask.”

Due to the great need for masks, the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had previously maintained that only healthcare workers, caregivers and people showing coronavirus symptoms should wear the protection.

George Gao, director-general of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has long urged overall use.

He recently told Science Magazine, “The big mistake in the US and Europe, in my opinion, is that people aren’t wearing masks. Many people have asymptomatic or presymptomatic infections. If they are wearing face masks, it can prevent droplets that carry the virus from escaping and infecting others.”

During an appearance on The 700 Club, neurologist, and immune system expert Dr. David Perlmutter agreed about the value in wearing a mask.

“One thing a mask will do is keep you from touching your face, when your hands are contaminated, which when you’re in public is likely to happen,” said Perlmutter. “The risk of you touching your nose or mouth is markedly reduced if you’re wearing a mask.”

Others highlight the success of slowing the epidemic in places like South Korea and Hong Kong, where most people wear masks.

“I’ve analyzed 38 scientific papers that have looked at the relationship between using masks and the transmission of COVID19 and similar kinds of viruses, and they all tell the same story, which is that wearing a mask can decrease transmission by up to 50 percent,” said Jeremy Howard, a research scientist at the University of San Francisco.

Given the concern over the short supply of masks in the US, Jo-Ann Fabrics, the arts and crafts chain, is urging Americans to fill the gap and is helping them do it. According to the company, all 860 of its stores are donating kits for volunteers to create cloth masks for hospitals and health care workers, complete with a how-to video.

“Many are spending their time and money to help in this tragic situation, and we want to step in to do our part to protect the amazing people who are helping the communities we serve,” said Jo-Ann President and CEO Wade Miquelon.

Cedarville University sophomore Connor Hart also found a way to pitch in.

“Just seeing the pandemic affect so many lives and put so many people in need just hurt me and made me want to find a way to help,” Connor told CBN News. “We learned we could start 3-D printing masks to help with the shortages.”

He is now using the printer to make plastic reusable masks round the clock, shipping them to medical facilities in need.

Connor says, with his school closed, it’s the least he could do with his free time.

“I’d rather be out helping people during this time than just trapped in my basement or my room doing like video games or something; something totally unproductive,” Connor said.

Higher Attendance, Lower Giving: Survey Shows How Churches Are Responding to COVID-19

Higher Attendance, Lower Giving: Survey Shows How Churches Are Responding to COVID-19

(RNS) — Giving is down, attendance is up and a good number of pastors still aren’t sure what they’re going to do about Easter.

Those are some of the big takeaways in a new Barna survey of Protestant pastors from across the United States about their churches’ responses to the coronavirus pandemic.

“The crisis is starting to take its toll” on church leaders as it becomes clear the measures needed to slow the spread of the virus will stretch on much longer than first thought, according to David Kinnaman, president of the California-based Christian research firm.

Barna surveyed 434 senior and executive pastors online using its Barna Church Pulse tool, starting one week after President Donald Trump declared a national emergency related to the pandemic; 222 pastors responded between March 20 and 23, and another 212 between March 27 and 30.

Over that week, pastors were less likely to say the pandemic had affected the overall well-being of the people in their churches only “a little” (dropping from 28% to 18%) or “not at all” (dropping from 7% to 3%) and more likely to say it had “some” effect (jumping from 46% to 60%) on them, according to Barna data.

Churches are following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to cancel large gatherings like Sunday services, with most pastors (63%) saying the buildings were open only to staff in the…

China’s People of Faith: Canaries in Xi Jinping’s Coal Mine

Editors Note: This piece was originally published in The Jerusalem Post. CBN News has been given permission by the author to republish it here.

Call it COVID-19. Or novel coronavirus. Or the now-politically incorrect term “Chinese flu.” But thanks to the virus’s unrivaled global threat, all eyes are now fixed on China and its Communist administration. The world is watching how President Xi Jinping behaves, what he seeks, and what is hidden behind his regime’s fiercely protected public face.

In light of this scrutiny, it wasn’t helpful to Xi’s efforts at damage control when the US Commission on International Religious Freedom declared in an update on March 13 that China was using its persecuted Uighur Muslims as virtual slave laborers.

“The Chinese government has compounded its mistreatment of Uighur and other Muslims by forcing them to work in factories…. We urge all American companies, including Amazon, Nike, Apple and Calvin Klein, to conduct a thorough investigation of their supply chains in China and cease any operations if they cannot definitively rule out the use of forced labor.”

At about the same time, a packed briefing took place in Washington, DC, exposing the Chinese government’s lockdown of millions of Uighurs in concentration camps. Experts presented meticulously documented evidence of “organ harvesting” – providing Uighur organs on demand for transplanted hearts, kidneys, livers and even matched sets of lungs.

The Chinese Communist Party has been able to collectively mistreat Uighur Muslims with ease because many of them live in one region – the Xinjiang autonomous territory. And thanks to satellite images, the concentration camps constructed to house millions of Uighurs are visible from space.

Not so visible or well documented are the regime’s abuses of other religious groups.

Tibetan Buddhists have long endured harsh treatment. Their devotion to the Dalai Lama is perceived as disloyalty to the People’s Republic of China, verging on treason. In response, since 2009, 156 Tibetans have self-immolated in protest of China’s abuses.

Chinese who practice Falun Gong spiritual exercises are subject to arrest, imprisonment and, according to numerous reports, summary execution – also for purposes of organ harvesting.

Even a community of less than 1,000 Jews in Kaifeng has been victimized by party authorities, who in 2018 stormed through a study center’s gates, tore loose and trashed a metal Star of David, and ripped Hebrew scriptural quotations off the walls. The authorities also put a stop to any foreign funding for the group.

But perhaps no religious group is perceived as a more dangerous threat to the regime than China’s enormous Christian population. It is widely reported that there are more Christians in China than Communist Party members – a reality that does not sit well with the party.

And persecution of Christians is nothing new. They have been relentlessly oppressed since Mao Zedong’s Chinese Communist Revolution in 1949.

My first introduction to China’s “suffering church” took place in the mid1980s when I coauthored a book about Pastor Wang Ming Dao, who was locked up in Chinese prisons from 1955 till 1980 for refusing to deny his faith. The stories of his torture, solitary confinement and abuse were crushing. Wang is cherished today as the founding father of China’s underground church. The title of the book was, appropriately, Walking the Hard Road.

AFTER PRESIDENT Richard Nixon’s ice-breaking visit to China in 1972, and thanks to subsequently surging commerce, tourism and Chinese public relations efforts, the world’s attention shifted away from China’s morally bankrupt political policies. Complaints about appalling cruelties were replaced by smiling faces on travel posters.

And across the decades, behind the flimsy facade of tourism and trade, China’s religious persecution continued. Then, in 2018, Xi’s crackdown on all religious believers launched harsher measures than any since Mao’s reign of terror, endangering all who refuse to bow the knee to him and his proclamations.

Today, thanks to an unwelcome and deadly intruder – COVID-19 – the Communist Party’s facade may actually be crumbling. A sickened world is taking a second look at China’s extreme despotism, typified by its policies on religious freedom.

In October 2017, Xi introduced a revolutionary “New Era” for China’s militantly atheistic regime. That was soon followed by an intense crackdown on China’s people of faith, including thousands of shuttered churches. However, Xi’s crackdown wasn’t solely about controlling religious thought.I

n reality, China’s people of faith are merely the proverbial canaries in Xi’s vast, dark coal mine.

Any voice, any belief, any declaration that challenges the party’s doctrine or questions Xi’s demands will most certainly be investigated, mocked, contradicted and eventually silenced. The courageous young pro-democracy demonstrators in Hong Kong know this all too well.

And consider the case of Dr. Li Wenliang, the brave whistleblower who warned the world about the dangerous new virus which eventually took his life. He was reprimanded, censured and otherwise disgraced. But his predictions were absolutely correct, and the regime was further discredited.

Perhaps one of the very few good effects that may emerge from today’s pandemic is the overdue exposure of China’s many injustices. Because of its shameful months-long virus cover-up, the lives of thousands, perhaps millions, may well be lost. And for the first time – perhaps ever – the siren song of China’s cheap labor, commercial prospects and financial boons may finally be overshadowed by the exposed malevolence of its leadership.

As for China’s people of faith – and particularly its long-suffering Christians – is the world finally watching?
