Court Upholds Criminal Conviction for Argentinean Doctor Who Refused to Perform Abortion

An Argentine court has upheld the criminal conviction of a gynecologist who had refused to abort the baby of a rape victim almost three years ago.

Dr. Leandro Rodriguez Lastra received a 14-month suspended jail sentence. In addition, he was also told by the court he couldn’t hold public office for a period of 28 months, according to the bioethics news website BioEdge.

Back in 2017, the 19-year-old victim was in her fifth month of pregnancy after being sexually abused by a relative. She first tried an abortion drug, but it failed. She was referred to Dr. Lastra, who at the time was the head of gynecology at a local hospital.

Lastra told the court the proposed abortion posed a risk to both the unborn child and the mother. However, the judges presiding over the case responded that the only requirement necessary for the legal termination of a pregnancy was a formal request from the victim, according to BioEdge.

Abortion until the 20th week of gestation is legal in Río Negro when a pregnant woman is found to have been raped, according to the Buenos Aires Times.

The child was born and was later given up for adoption.

In a divided opinion, two of the judges on the panel said Lastra was guilty of the crime of “failure to comply with the duties of a public official.”

Lastra’s lawyer told BioEdge the ruling could be overturned by the Argentinean Superior Court.

The verdict, he said, “is a mere ideological expression that shows that they did not look at anything in the trial, in fact, they practically do not cite the witnesses or anything that happened there. It’s as if they didn’t see it. …if the Superior Court or the Court applies the law, as it should, we will be able to overturn this ruling.”

U.S. Is Best-Prepared Country to Handle a Pandemic, 2019 Study Finds

U.S. Is Best-Prepared Country to Handle a Pandemic, 2019 Study Finds

A 2019 study found that the United States is the best-prepared country to handle a pandemic.

The Nuclear Threat Initiative and the John Hopkins Center for Health Security released the study in October.

“Johns Hopkins, highly respected, … they did a study, comprehensive, the countries best and worst prepared for an epidemic,” Trump said in the White House briefing room this week. “And the United States, we’re rated No. 1.”

The team compiled 140 questions and 34 indicators for each country. On a scale to 100, the average score of every country was 40.2.

In comparison, the U.S. scored 83.5 and ranked No. 1 in five of six categories, including prevention, early detection and reporting, rapid response and mitigation, sufficient and robust health system, compliance with international norms. In the category of overall risk environment and vulnerability to biological threats, the U.S. ranked No. 19.

“COVID-19 is the latest global reminder of the power of infectious disease outbreaks to cause significant harm to health, peace, and prosperity if countries are not adequately prepared,” said Jennifer Nuzzo, a senior scholar at the Center for Health Security and one of the co-authors of the preparedness study. “It is important that national leaders recognize these threats and commit to increasing and sustaining countries’ capacities to prevent, detect, and respond to these events.”

PODCAST: The Bible: Myth or History?, Part 2 (Reasons to Believe #170 with Daniel Whyte III)

Welcome to The Reasons to Believe podcast, episode #170. My name is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International.

Our Reasons to Believe Scripture Passage for today is Hebrews 4:12. It reads, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Our Reasons to Believe quote for today is from John Newton. He said,
“Precious Bible! What a treasure
Does the Word of God afford!
All I want for life or pleasure,
Food and Medicine, shield and sword;
Let the world account me poor—
Christ and this, I need no more.”

Our Reason to Believe powerpoint today is titled “The Bible: Myth or History?, Part 2” from “The Handbook of Christian Apologetics” by Peter Kreeft and Ronald K. Tacelli.

The authors continue with the first part of this chapter subtitled, “Connections among the Bible, miracles and the resurrection.”

4. Another technical meaning, unusual outside professional circles, is that of a projection of human consciousness out onto reality. In this sense, Kant’s theory of knowledge (“the Copernican revolution in philosophy,” as he called it) is the claim that all human knowledge is myth. In a narrower sense, dreams are myths if while we are dreaming we take them for objective realities.

5. A much broader, but still technical and professional, use of myth is “any story meant to articulate a worldview.” This sense would include both literally true and fictional stories, but it is usually used with the connotation of fiction.

6. A last sense, also quite broad and quite technical, used in literary more than biblical circles, is that of a Platonic archetype in story form, a universal truth about human life expressed in a story. The story is usually fiction, but not necessarily. Christ’s resurrection, even if factual, would also be a myth in this sense, as the pattern for our resurrection.

When it comes to biblical studies, the major controversy is between the demythologizers and orthodox Christianity. Demythologizers claim that all or most of the miracle stories in the Bible are myths in all six of the above senses. Orthodox Christians often agree that the Bible contains myth in senses 1 (sacred story), 3 (parables), 5 (worldview) and 6 (archetype), but not senses 2 (unreal) or 4 (projection). The bottom line is miracles, especially the resurrection: did they really happen or not? This simple question is not the only legitimate question, and consideration of differently nuanced senses of myth is quite proper, but not if it obscures the primary, simple question.

It is important at the outset to clarify the logical order and relationship among the three issues of demythologizing, miracles and the resurrection, because this relationship is often put backwards by those who argue against a literal resurrection and against miracles on the grounds that the Bible is myth, not history. The logic goes the other way: if the resurrection really did happen, then the assumption that “miracles don’t happen” is refuted; in that case, the miracle stories in the Bible can be history, not myth.

Let us put the logical point in a different way. To argue that the resurrection didn’t really happen because the Bible is myth begs the question. For when unbelievers are asked why they think the Bible is myth rather than history, they say it is because it is full of unbelievable miracle stories like the resurrection. This is arguing in a circle. It is arguing that the resurrection is myth because the Bible is myth, and the Bible is myth because it contains obviously mythical miracle stories like the resurrection.

Lord willing, we will continue looking at this topic in our next episode.

—PRAYER—

Now, if you are listening today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, allow me to show you how.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Until next time, my friend, please keep in mind these reasons to believe. God bless!

'There is Hope for My Nation': Evangelist Reaches the Youth of Georgia for Christ

TBILISI, GEORGIA – On a Wednesday afternoon, in an ancient village northwest of Georgia’s capital Tbilisi, more than 100 youngsters met several days here to learn how to have deeper and more meaningful encounters with Jesus Christ.

Guram Imerlishvili leads an effort to encourage young Georgians to accept Christ as Lord of their lives.

“I think if you want to have a harvest in this country, you need to be focused on this new generation,” he said. “If you really love Georgia, if you really love your culture, if you are all about your country, you need to be closer to Jesus because Jesus loves more my country.”

Once part of the communist empire and often called the “Riviera of the Soviet Union,” Georgia is nestled between the Caucasus Mountains and the Black Sea.

Turkey and Armenia flank its southern border. To its east is Azerbaijan and Russia is to the north. As one of the world’s oldest Christian countries, more than 80 percent of Georgians belong to the Orthodox Church.

Yet, Guram says many don’t know Christ personally.

“We never go deeper to [a] real-life relationship with Jesus,” he said.

For several years he and his wife, Maya, have led School Without Walls, a program helping young men and women become sold out for their faith.

Having an Impact for Christ on a Generation

“We have been holding these camps for 13 years now and from the beginning, the goal was to teach young people Christian values. Values that will change their lives in a deeper way and impact generations to come,” said Maya Imerlishvili, Guram’s wife.

Guram often shares his journey to show how God redeems and transforms broken lives.

To understand Guram’s passion for reaching Georgia’s young generation, you really have to understand his past. When he was 19 years old, he decided to leave Georgia and moved to Athens, Greece, where he says he got involved in the wrong company, started a nightclub and lived, according to his words, a life that was wild and free.

“I was fully swallowed by sin,” Guram said.

Although he grew up in the Orthodox Church, he really didn’t know Christ. He smoked, drank, and partied hard with the wrong crowd.

“I Know There is Hope for My Nation”

“I was hoping that Jesus was a real person, but I was not sure and I was very afraid if Jesus is real, that means hell is real and that means my destination is hell,” he recalled.

After years of wild living and feeling empty, Guram says he finally decided to give his heart to Christ.

“He gave me [a] revelation that there is more and since I met Jesus Christ I know that there is hope for my nation; now I am not hopeless, now I know that everything is possible with Jesus Christ.”

It’s a transformational message that resonated with many camp attendees.

“It is not easy to live in this world and strive for what is invisible,” said Mirian Tabagari, a camp attendee. “Which no one has seen. Which you have never seen either. But when you have evidence in your heart that you are a Christian, you have the power to overcome sins, passion, hatred, selfishness and doubt.”

The Importance of a Personal Relationship with Christ

For others like Tako Beruashvili the meetings are a time of renewal.

“I approach the Lord with renewed intensity when I leave here. I feel like I’m ready to go out into the fight again. I am so filled with Holy Spirit,” Tako told CBN News.

This was Beso Bujiashvili’s first evangelical camp. As a member of the Orthodox church, Bujiashvili says he learned the importance of a personal relationship with Christ.

“I have thought about God many times but I have never been able to put myself in the way of Christ,” Beso said. “In these five days, I learned that I need to spend more time to get to know Him.”

That’s music to Guram’s ears. He prays that one day these young men and women will transform their nation of Christ.

“I have definite hope that my country will shine for Jesus Christ and that we will be light for many nations around us.”

PODCAST: China Could be Hiding Coronavirus Death Toll of Millions (Second Coming Watch Update #911 with Daniel Whyte III)

This is Daniel Whyte III with the Second Coming Watch Update. This is update #911. Let’s take a quick look at today’s prophecy-related headlines which point towards the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and the end of the world as we know it.

First, today, under the Sign category of PESTILENCES & FATAL EPIDEMIC DISEASES — According to The Daily Star, Fears China could be hiding its true coronavirus death toll have been sparked as 21.5 million people failed to register for the country’s artificial intelligence software. Citizens in China cannot buy food, or log in online without using their facial recognition, suggesting the disappearance, quarantine, or death of 21.5 million people. In the months of January and February the coronavirus bulldozed its way through China, causing much of the country to go into lockdown. The virus itself originated in China, with wet markets in Wuhan [WOO-HAHN], in the country’s Hubei [HOO-BAY] province, said to be the original epicentre of the outbreak. China is slowly coming out of the government-imposed lockdown, and life is going back to normal, but the Artificial Intelligence Organisation reports nearly 21.5 million people have failed to register their mobile phones. The country requires its citizens to use their mobiles to travel, shop online and activate social media. Chinese officials have not explained the large hole in mobile registrations, prompting some to theorise it could be altering death tolls of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Second, today, under the Sign category of FAMINES — According to The Daily Star, footage has shown millions of locusts forming small groups in the desert to battle high winds as a plague continues to sweep across east Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Billions of locusts have ravaged crops in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia in recent months – leading to food shortages in countries that already suffer severe poverty. Swarms as big as 60 kilometres across have also spread to Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan and even China. Apocalyptic footage has surfaced showing skies turning black as the bugs swarm over cities. Authorities in Saudi Arabia have desperately tried to stem the locust invasion by spraying thousands of litres of pesticides in agricultural regions. Fears have mounted, though, that a second wave of locusts could soon arrive after they were seen hatching in Kenya.

Third, today, under the Sign category of PESTILENCES & FATAL EPIDEMIC DISEASES — According to CNN, Spain has now seen more deaths from the coronavirus pandemic than any other country except Italy, with officials warning that the peak of its outbreak has still not been reached. The Ministries of Health and Science announced Wednesday the nation has recorded 3,434 deaths from COVID-19, pushing it above China in total fatalities. The numbers are up 27% on the day before. Spain is under a countrywide lockdown, and top health official Fernando Simon predicted the nation had still not reached the crest of its outbreak.

Fourth, today, under the Sign category of EARTHQUAKES IN DIVERS PLACES — According to Newsweek, A 7.5 magnitude earthquake has been recorded beneath the northern Pacific Ocean near Russia’s Kuril [KU-RILL] Islands. The quake struck at 2:49 a.m. on Wednesday at a depth of around 37 miles. The epicenter was located 136 miles south-southeast of Severo-Kurilsk [SEH-VER-OH KU-RILL-ISK] on the island chain, and 870 miles northeast of the Japanese city of Sapporo [SAH-PUR-ROH].

Fifth, today, under the Sign category of PESTILENCES & FATAL EPIDEMIC DISEASES — According to Haaretz, Major Orthodox Jewish organizations in the United States are asking community members to limit preparations for Passover to essentials only, in light of government health guidelines. They wrote in a letter, “We are accustomed to honoring Pesach to the fullest degree, including getting haircuts, purchasing new clothing and tableware, and preparing the fullest menus. This year’s public health crisis mandates us to significantly limit all of the above.” Essential Passover purchases are to be done by “one family member only – who is neither ill, vulnerable, nor of known exposure to COVID-19 – as rarely and as briefly as possible.” In addition, the organizations called for people to cancel Passover travel plans.

——–

The prophetic passage of Scripture that we are looking at today is Ezekiel 16:60-63. It reads: “Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant. Then thou shalt remember thy ways, and be ashamed, when thou shalt receive thy sisters, thine elder and thy younger: and I will give them unto thee for daughters, but not by thy covenant. And I will establish my covenant with thee; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord: That thou mayest remember, and be confounded, and never open thy mouth any more because of thy shame, when I am pacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord God.”

Allow me to share with you some commentary on this passage from Exploring Bible Prophecy from Genesis to Revelation, by Tim LaHaye and Ed Hindson.

This prophecy follows Ezekiel’s most severe denunciation and condemnation of national Israel. In these verses the prophet describes the origin of Israel and its moral defection. The condition of the nation is described as “harlotry,” which refers to ceremonial uncleanness communicated by contact with whatever is ritually impure or polluting–for example, illicit sexual activity and unclean animals. Sometimes the simile of a “menstruous (unclean) woman” is employed to depict the “unapproachableness” of Israel. This condition is said to have been incurred by bad “moral conduct” and “reckless deeds.” Therefore, just as the ceremonial impurity of the menstruous woman separates her from the sphere of that which is considered holy, so the conduct of Israel has caused her to be removed from the Holy Land. The analogy of menstruation occurs in Ezekiel 18:6, 22:10, and 36:17, and may have had further intention of showing the Lord’s spatial separation (that is, withdrawal of the divine presence), just as a man was commanded to distance himself from a menstruating woman.

If the Lord tarries His Coming and we live, we will continue looking at the prophetic passages of the Bible in our next broadcast / podcast.

Our Second Coming quote for today is from Vance Havner. He said, “Some of the saints are SINGING about the Second Coming, but it is one thing just to sing the national anthem during the war and quite another to go into battle. The best evidence that the Lord’s return has really gotten hold of us is when we occupy till He come, do business for God, buy up the opportunities, because the days are evil.”

Let’s Pray

***

If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. Here is how.

Now that is bad news, but here is the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.

Virginia Gov. Quotes Bible, Pleads with Jerry Falwell, Jr. to Close Liberty University

Virginia Gov. Quotes Bible, Pleads with Jerry Falwell, Jr. to Close Liberty University

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is pleading with Liberty University’s president to reconsider a move reopening the campus during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying it’s risking lives and sending students the wrong message.

Liberty University President Jerry Falwell, Jr. said this week the campus would reopen for students and employees, although classes would continue to be given online.

As of Thursday, 460 people statewide had tested positive for the coronavirus and 13 had died.

“We have heard too many mixed messages around the country about COVID-19, and this is yet another example,” Northam said at a press conference. “Our message has been clear and it will continue to be clear: Stay home unless you have to leave for essential reasons. We appreciate our colleges and universities making accommodation for students with special cases. But that is very different from inviting students to leave their homes and come back to campus.”

Northam also quoted Scripture.

“As we are told in First Corinthians, ‘It is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful,’” he said, referencing 1 Corinthians 4:2. “Proving faithful means providing clear and consistent guidance. And it means respecting the duty that Liberty University has to its students, its staff, the Lynchburg community in which it is located, and our commonwealth.”

PODCAST: Whyte House Family Devotional Reading of Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening #69 with Daniel Whyte III

This is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International with the Whyte House Family Devotional Reading of Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening podcast. This is Episode #69.

Charles Spurgeon was a prominent English Particular Baptist preacher. He was very influential among the Christians of various denominations during his age and even today, and is commonly called the “Prince of Preachers”. After some time of alternately searching for God and running from God, he had a powerful encounter which led him to give his life to Christ. Spurgeon was only 16 when he preached his first sermon and he began publishing books shortly afterward. At the time of his death, he had preached nearly 3,600 sermons and published 49 volumes of commentaries, sayings, anecdotes, illustrations and devotions. Spurgeon said, “encouraging thoughts are like honey to the heart”, and wrote this devotional in hopes that its uplifting messages for each day of the year would bring comfort and refreshment to our walk with God. He was inspired by Isaiah 50:4 which reads, “He wakeneth morning by morning. He wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned” and Psalm 63:5-6 which says, “My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips; when I remember Thee upon my bed, and meditate on Thee in the night watches.”

Hosea 3:1 reads: “Then said the Lord unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the Lord toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine.”

Believer, look back through all thine experience, and think of the way whereby the Lord thy God has led thee in the wilderness, and how he hath fed and clothed thee every day—how he hath borne with thine ill manners—how he hath put up with all thy murmurings, and all thy longings after the flesh-pots of Egypt—how he has opened the rock to supply thee, and fed thee with manna that came down from heaven. Think of how his grace has been sufficient for thee in all thy troubles—how his blood has been a pardon to thee in all thy sins—how his rod and his staff have comforted thee. When thou hast thus looked back upon the love of the Lord, then let faith survey his love in the future, for remember that Christ’s covenant and blood have something more in them than the past. He who has loved thee and pardoned thee, shall never cease to love and pardon. He is Alpha, and he shall be Omega also: he is first, and he shall be last. Therefore, bethink thee, when thou shalt pass through the valley of the shadow of death, thou needest fear no evil, for he is with thee. When thou shalt stand in the cold floods of Jordan, thou needest not fear, for death cannot separate thee from his love; and when thou shalt come into the mysteries of eternity thou needest not tremble, “For I am persuaded, that neither death; nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Now, soul, is not thy love refreshed? Does not this make thee love Jesus? Doth not a flight through illimitable plains of the ether of love inflame thy heart and compel thee to delight thyself in the Lord thy God? Surely as we meditate on “the love of the Lord,” our hearts burn within us, and we long to love him more.

PRAY.

Thank you for listening to the Morning and Evening podcast. If you do not know the Lord as your Savior, here is how you can be saved from Hell and walk with the Lord morning and evening until you go to that wonderful place called Heaven when you die:

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 18:8: “Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

If you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior today, please email me at [email protected] and let us know. There is some free material that we want to send you. If you have a prayer request, please e-mail that to us as well, and we will pray for you until you tell us to stop.

God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.

PODCAST: The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #455: Amos 5:10-13 with Daniel Whyte III

This is Daniel Whyte III president of Gospel Light Society International with The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #455, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary or Matthew Henry Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Amos 5:10-13.

10 They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

11 Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.

12 For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.

13 Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.

________

That was Amos 5:10-13. Now here is the sense of it.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:

Verses 10–13 continue the denunciation begun in verse 7. Within the larger chiasmus of verses 1–17, verses 10–13 form their own internal chiasmus:
a. Intimidation of the righteous
b. Abuse of the poor
c. Judgment of covenant sin
Because of their zeal to profit illegally through the courts, they hated any righteous judge who reproved their injustice, and despised any righteous witness who told the truth in defense of the innocent. Their venom and intimidation were so severe that many felt the prudent thing to do was to keep quiet in such times. The abusers, thus freed of any rebuke or opposition, found corrupt judges to take bribes and deprive the poor of justice. Rich landowners successfully manipulated legal proceedings to trample on the poor, gain ownership of his fields, and force him to give a large fee of grain to remain a tenant on the land. But God knew how many were their offenses. He knew how great were their sins. Therefore, though they had built stone mansions fit for kings and had planted lush vineyards in the fields that once belonged to small farmers, they would neither live in the houses nor drink the wine. Their suzerain Lord would invoke the treaty punishments against covenant disobedience. Their greed would be met with poetic justice: as they had stripped the poor, so God would strip them.

____________

Thank you for listening to the Scripture & The Sense Podcast. Remember to read the Word of God each and every day and pray without ceasing to God for wisdom to understand it and apply it to your life. Most importantly, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Please stay tuned for a complete presentation of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ so that you can get your soul saved from Hell to that wonderful place called Heaven when you die. May God bless you and keep you is my prayer.
