Keith Getty Explains the ‘Different’ Goals of Hymns, Modern Worship Songs

Every songwriter hopes their tunes stand the test of time.

But for Keith Getty, this goal has particular significance. Keith and his wife Kristyn are writers of modern hymns – songs that, by definition, are intended to be more than a radio hit.

The Gettys recently released their newest album, Sing! An Irish Christmas, which was recorded live at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tenn.

“The goal of a hymn is – first – does it teach a certain aspect of theology? And, secondly, could this song be sung for the duration of the hymnbook? – 20 years, 30 years, indefinitely. So it’s just a whole different target [than contemporary worship]. In one sense, there’s no scientific definition. In another sense, it’s an entirely different goal.”

Hymns typically use “more classical forms” to “try and teach the faith,” Getty said. By comparison, a modern worship song – generally speaking – “has to sound contemporary” if it is to be played on the radio.

“Only time will tell” whether a hymn will be sung by future generations, he said.

“I don’t think there’s a sense of rightness or wrongness,” Keith Getty said of the comparison between worship songs and modern hymns. “It’s just different artistic goals.”

Getty was the co-writer of In Christ Alone – one of the more popular modern hymns in recent years.

Religious Affairs Minister in Sudan Signals Freedom of Religion in New Era

Religious Affairs Minister in Sudan Signals Freedom of Religion in New Era

JUBA, South Sudan, November 5, 2019 (Morning Star News) – In another sign that Islamist elements hostile to Christianity in Sudan could be reined in, the minister of religious affairs has reiterated that Christian properties confiscated under the previous regime would be returned.

Acknowledging that Christians were persecuted and endured “very bad practices” under the regime of former President Omar al-Bashir, Minister of Religious Affairs Nasr al-Din Mufreh on Sunday (Nov. 3) was quoted in International Arabic newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat as saying property stolen from Sudanese Christians would be returned through court proceedings.

Mufreh also had told media in September that confiscated church properties should be returned.

In Sunday’s article in which he invited expelled Jews to return to Sudan – as he had in September, drawing criticism from Muslim hardliners – Mufreh said that Christians and people of other beliefs are free to practice their faith in Sudan.

“They [Christians] are Sudanese, and their religion is heavenly with its values and beliefs,” Mufreh told Asharq Al-Awsat, saying that Christians have such a presence in Sudan that they should not be described as a minority.

Sudanese Christians hope the comments mark a sea change from the Islamist campaign of Bashir, ousted by the army on April 11 after widespread protests…

Former church leader Joshua Harris says he ‘excommunicated’ himself

In an interview with HBO news platform Axios, the 44-year-old said: “If you’re not living according to the teaching of the Bible, and you’re living in unrepentant sin, then you have to be put out of the church. I excommunicated myself, essentially.”

The author of the popular 1997 book, I Kissed Dating Goodbye, said he came to realise that he gave bad advice in his book.

He said: “In an effort to set a high standard, the book emphasized practices (not dating, not kissing before marriage) and concepts … that are not in the Bible.

“I apologised for it. I unpublished the books. I pulled the books off the market. But you can’t give people [back], you know, years of their life. It was a long process for me. I started seeing that the book really had misled a lot of people.”

Harris, who left his role as lead pastor of a church in 2015 now spends his Sunday mornings doing yoga.

“I was a leader and a spokesman and I called people to live in very particular ways, to sacrifice in very particular ways,” he said.

“And so for me to change in my thinking feels like a betrayal to them.”

“I was really just trying to be honest about the fact that all the ways that I had defined faith and Christianity, that I was no longer choosing to live according to those.”

Beijing Changes Bible Characters to Ancient Chinese in Church Magazine

Beijing Changes Bible Characters to Ancient Chinese in Church Magazine

Under the government’s orders, the official publication of China’s state-sanctioned Protestant church network has begun using artwork depicting biblical characters as ancient Chinese men and women – and even showing Jesus in traditional Han attire, a religious watchdog says.

The Heavenly Wind magazine is published monthly by the National Committee of the Three-Self Patriotic Movement and the China Christian Council.

Since January, its cover art has featured “sinicized” biblical illustrations with Jesus talking to ancient Chinese characters in Chinese landscapes, Bitter Winter reported. For example, Mary was “personified as an ancient Chinese woman,” and the miracle of the five loaves and two fishes shows Jesus feeding characters “portrayed with their hair tied in traditional Chinese buns.”

Bitter Winter believes the artwork “goes well beyond the iconographic ‘inculturation’ traditionally practiced by Catholic and some other missionaries.” The magazine “has always been a good indicator of the state of ‘official’ Christianity in China,” Bitter Winter reported.

“My eyes widened when I saw Mary with her hair tied in a bun like an ancient Chinese woman. It’s so bizarre,” a member of a Three-Self church told Bitter Winter.

A 70-year-old Christian from the province of Qinghai told Bitter Winter the Communist government…

Archbishop tells abuse inquiry Catholic Church is ‘shocked to core’ by presence of evil

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster,  was talking about the lessons he learned from attending a worldwide summit held for senior Roman Catholic bishops on tackling the global problem.

He told the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) he attended the global conference in Rome in February, along with around 200 other delegates.

Cardinal Nichols said the church in this country had already implemented some of the measures discussed there.

Speaking about the Catholic Church in this country, the lead counsel for the inquiry Brian Altman QC asked: “Did you come away thinking first of all, we haven’t done enough?”

Cardinal Nichols said in some aspects, that was right, citing the example of a bishop from Puerto Rico who encouraged the topic of child safeguarding to be spoken about in every parish.

Cardinal Nichols said: “I think we should do more in the general life of our parishes to set the task of safeguarding in a more positive context.

“I think the experience in the Catholic community in this country over the last 20 years has been one of struggling to cope with the presence of evil embodied in its members, which has shocked it to the core.”

He added: “I think getting the task of safeguarding understood in an utterly positive way is something we still have to achieve.”

Mr Altman asked if the cardinal believed there was still much to improve in 2019, despite major inquiries held in 2001 and 2007.

The Archbishop of Westminster, aged…

Man attacked after preaching on New York subway

According to witnesses, the 79-year-old man was holding a Bible and preaching during a train journey near Times Square in New York City on 24th October when a person shouted expletives at him and hit him on the head with a shoe.

Instagram user @f.u.n.m.i.k.e documented a small part of the incident and also captured the aftermath which included the man’s head bleeding and her trying to help him recover.

“What a world we live in that some people see preaching the word of God as a threat to their lives,” she wrote in an Instagram post.

“This old man right here was just singing some gospel songs and sharing the word of God to people on the train, he didn’t say anything to hurt anyone, he wasn’t even loud, you could barely hear him talk but this is what he got in return…”

She added that after passenger hit the man with a stiletto heel, his Bible was thrown away.

“I was just so mad and I felt I needed to do something to help him because he was bleeding too much,” she added.

“He’s just an old man. He doesn’t deserve this. Justice is needed.”

According to local TV new station Fox 5, the New York Police Department (NYPD) responded to a call about the assault and man was taken to New York University Hospital in a stable condition where he got 30 stitches.

Police have appealed for more information about the assault.

Employee saves man who falls on train track, video goes viral: The irony of sacrificial courage

An intoxicated man fell onto a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) track in Oakland last Sunday afternoon. He landed in front of an approaching train. A BART employee named John O’Connor grabbed him by the shoulders and pulled him to safety.

The now-viral video shows how close the man came to death.

We are all in this story. We are the man who is about to die, or the man who did what he could to save him, or the people who did not try to help.

“The antagonism between life and conscience”

I recently read a statement by Randy Alcorn that has bothered me ever since. He quoted Leo Tolstoy: “The antagonism between life and conscience may be removed either by a change of life or by a change of conscience.”

Alcorn then commented: “Many of us have elected to adjust our consciences rather than our lives. Our powers of rationalization are unlimited. They allow us to live in luxury and indifference while others, whom we could help if we chose to, starve and go to hell.”

His assessment seems harsh. Surely, I would not let someone starve or go to hell if I could help them. But Alcorn forces me to ask: Am I giving all I should to help those who are starving? Am I doing all I should to share Christ with those who are going to hell?

Are you?

“Let’s Call ‘Religious Freedom’ by Its Real Name”

I’m not sure Christians in America have ever been as tempted to privatize our faith as we are today.

I wrote yesterday about the Trump administration’s new proposal that would allow Christian charities who affirm biblical marriage to arrange adoptions for at-risk children. An article in the Daily Beast responds with this headline: “Let’s Call ‘Religious Freedom’ by Its Real Name: Poisonous, Anti-LGBTQ Bigotry.”

In similar news, the D. James Kennedy Ministries, a Christian media ministry founded in 1974, has been labeled a “hate” group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The reason: the…

Catholic Church investigates after two nuns expecting babies

One of the nuns, a mother superior, aged 34, only realised she was pregnant when she visited hospital, complaining of stomach pains, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

Both nuns are believed to be originally from Africa and were posted to their home continent as part of their charity missions.

The two women are nuns in Sicily, but belong to separate orders and are expecting children despite their vows of chastity, causing “consternation at this news” a Church source in Rome told The Sun newspaper:

“It appears that both women were back in their home nations and obviously had some form of sexual encounter.

“An investigation has been launched. They both breached strict rules of chastity but the welfare of their children is uppermost.”

It is believed that both nuns have now returned to Italy to prepare for the births of their children.

Church leader urges young people to read Troubles book

Rev William Henry conceded that in the past Protestants had “not been good” at telling their stories, and emphasised the need to be aware of the pain caused by the legacy of the past.

He was speaking at the launch in Belfast of the new book, Considering Grace: Presbyterians And The Troubles.

It was compiled over three years from 120 interviews with ministers, victims, members of the security forces and peace-makers, among others.

Rev Terry Laverty was 15 when his brother Robert, 18, a police officer, was killed by the IRA in 1972.

In the book he recalls feeling anger for years, recalling shouting at God “behind the wind and the waves” as he walked along Ballycastle beach.

Now he says the pain remains but his faith gives him and his family the grace to get through it.

Other ministers recall attending atrocities.

Rev David Cupples was at the scene of the IRA’s Remembrance Sunday bomb in Enniskillen in 1987.

He described feeling that if Ronnie Hill, who had been left in a coma by the attack, had died, it would have pushed him “over the edge”.

He recalled telling a colleague: “I honestly fear I am about to go over the edge. If a phone call comes through that Ronnie has died, I don’t think I can cope with it.

“When I started to pray, I cried in a way I never cried in my life, before or since. There was just this absolutely enormous reservoir of pain and sorrow that built up…

Five Constants in Seasons of Transition

By Kevin Spratt

In the last two months, I have transitioned from one fast-paced organization to another. It’s been fast, busy, and a ton of fun. The only thing constant about life is change and transition. Every day we take one step closer to something new and one step away from something old.

Recently, I paused to reflect on what I am learning during this time of change. Here are 5 constants to keep in mind during a season of transition.

  1. History – Every new place you are going to has a history. You should take the time to understand its history and honor the work others have done. As I transitioned into my new role, a good friend was transitioning out. Jonathan Howe did an incredible job helping Church Answers get to where it stands today. I am thankful for his hard work in the past which has given me a new opportunity today.
  2. People – By saying “yes” to something new you are saying “no” to something else. We all need to keep in mind that nothing is ever “just business.” People are impacted at many levels during seasons of transition. I remember several years ago when I transferred departments at LifeWay. It was hard because I left one of my best friends and mentors to explore a new opportunity. Remember your decisions always impact people on a personal level.
  3. Harmony – I don’t believe in life balance. It’s never achievable. I believe in the pursuit of harmony. Jeff Bezos introduced me to this concept recently. You can see his article HERE. My wife knows that my increased…
