Only three quarters of Christians believe in hell, data reveals

The study, conducted by Christian Research panel Resonate surveyed over 5,000 Christians across the UK and found 74 percent believed hell existed while 10 per cent did not, and a further 16 per cent said they were uncertain.

The report also revealed that 15 percent believed the topic of hell was of little relevance to modern day life.

Author Matt Adcock, who commissioned the study ahead of the launch of his new book Complete Darkness told Premier he was surprised by the findings.

“I thought hell perhaps was even less of an issue for people now. It seems like a very harsh doctrine,” he said.

Adcock who is in the ten per cent that doesn’t believe in hell, went on to say that he thought teaching on the subject was becoming out-of-date and less “favourable” within the Church.

“People want to believe in heaven and a positive God of love that’s gonna love you forever. I think it’s a harder doctrine to say, you know, you’ll be judged and accountable for everything you’ve done on Earth.

“I think churches are adapting their message to attract people who have a more liberal mindset,” he added.

The study also revealed that the number of people who believed in hell varied greatly to the number of people who believed in heaven, particularly within the Methodist Church.

Adcock says there is a mystery around the concept of hell which makes it more difficult to understand and suggested more teaching on the subject was needed.

“There’s only 15 verses in the Bible that…

Christian converted couple forced from Indian home by Hindu son allowed to return

Champa Digwal and her husband, Sultan became Christians when she was miraculously cured of a 12 year continual bleed, according to information from religious freedom network British Pakistani Christian Association (BPCA).

The pair converted to the Christian faith after Champa heard of the healing of a woman with a similar condition who touched the cloak of Jesus, in Matthew 5:25-29.

The New Testament miracle inspired Champa, who previously followed the Hindu faith, to attend a local church where she was then reportedly healed of her bleeding infirmity and subsequently put her faith in Jesus.

Sultan also became a believer upon witnessing the miracle and the pair are now regular attenders of their local Christian church.

Their Hindu son, Rohtas has been accused of beating his parents following the news of their conversion before evicting them both from the home they shared together.

The Digwal’s, who were in poor health were provided with temporary shelter and financial support to cover a number of medical bills by their local pastor, Shusil.

A delegation of Christian and Hindu leaders has since intervened with the help of BPCA to condemn Rohtas actions and call for him to re-instate his parent’s into the family home.

Following direct comment from Hindu leaders, Rohtas has now agreed to allow his parents to return and retain their Christian beliefs without fear of…

Christian volunteers stand to protect children at Hong Kong protests

The Hong Kong demonstrations, which began in June after the proposal of a controversial extradition law, have escalated over recent months as clashes between police and activists have become increasingly violent, with police using tear gas and activists storming parliament.

The ‘Protect the Children’ operation, launched by The Good Neighbour North District Church seeks to act as a mediator between law enforcers and protesters.

Led by Pastor Roy Chan, teams of mainly Christian volunteers inspired by the courage of young activists there, have taken to the streets to protect them from harm.

Dozens of volunteers head to out to protests each day to form ‘human chains’ in an attempt to prevent police from advancing and potential violence from escalating.

Speaking to the BBC, pastor Chan said he sees the work as his service to both God and society and an opportunity to display the sacrificial message of the gospel.

“That’s the self-sacrifice spirit. Beat us, don’t beat our kids,” he said.

Chan went on to say volunteers are finding it harder to mediate as many are experiencing increased levels of violence at the hands of police, including being kicked or pepper-sprayed for ‘obstruction’.

The group want to see more people added to it’s cause to strengthen it’s impact and protect more children.

Ruling to disqualify Croydon church pastor upheld by tribunal

The Charity Commission opened an initial inquiry into Rhema Church, Croydon in February 2015 over alleged financial irregularities, stating it was unable to clarify the correct spending of approximately £280,000 charitable funds.

Pastor Martin Phelps was suspended by the Interim Manager in 2017 pending the investigation, before ultimately being dismissed from his employment with the Charity in November 2018 for disciplinary breaches and gross misconduct.

On 11th January 2019 an order was made by the Charity Commission to disqualify Phelps from holding a senior management or trustee position within any charity, for a period of 10 years.

The Commission and subsequently the court concluded that Mr Phelps should be disqualified on the basis that he misused the charity’s credit card, used charitable funds for international trips, encouraged the breach of employment suspensions and withheld information from the court.

The decision to uphold the ruling, following an appeal by Phelps was published by the First Tier Tribunal on 7th October.

Amy Spiller, Head of Investigations Team at the Charity Commission said: “We welcome the Tribunal’s decision to uphold our disqualification of Mr Phelps of Rhema Church London.

“The decision supports our conclusion that the actions of Mr Phelps, whilst in his role as Pastor at the church, amounted to misconduct or mismanagement in the…

Fresh hope for Wrightbus workers following positive negotiations with church pastor and new investor

The Ballymena operation, famous for building London buses, was placed into administration last month with the loss of 1,200 jobs.

The former business owner Jeff Wright is a pastor at Green Pastures Church and came under fire after the church received £15 million in donations from the firm when it was profitable.

English industrialist Jo Bamford announced on Friday that he had agreed a deal in principle to buy the factory and associated land from Wright.

There was jubilation among former workers at the gates of the plant on Friday morning as the news emerged.

Steve McMaster, who has worked for Wrightbus for 42 years, described it the best day in his time working for the firm, and vowed it will “once again be the best bus company in the world”.

But regional officer for the Unite union George Brash warned that, while a deal has been agreed in principle, there remain “a few hurdles to get over”.

“We are hopeful there will be some formal deal by Tuesday next week,” he said.

“Workers have been through the mill for the last two weeks so they are entitled to a bit of euphoria.

“It is good news but … we want to see that in writing and then get to the next stage and see how many people will get employed.”

Work is understood to be continuing across the weekend, and workers will be briefed on developments on Monday at a meeting at Ballymena Showgrounds.

O’Rourke: Churches Opposed to Same-Sex Marriage Should Lose Tax-Exempt Status

O’Rourke: Churches Opposed to Same-Sex Marriage Should Lose Tax-Exempt Status

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke pledged Thursday night to end the tax-exempt status of churches and religious organizations that oppose same-sex marriage if he’s elected, saying it’s a necessary step to promote human rights.

O’Rourke, a former U.S. representative from Texas, made the comments during CNN’s town hall on LGBT issues. Eight other candidates participated, although only O’Rourke and Sen. Cory Booker were the only ones asked the tax-exempt question.

While Booker refused to endorse the yanking of churches’ tax-exempt status, O’Rourke quickly embraced it.

O’Rourke was asked, “Do you think religious institutions, like colleges, churches [and] charities – should they lose their tax-exempt status if they oppose same-sex marriage?”

“Yes,” O’Rourke said to applause. “There can be no reward, no benefit, no tax break for anyone or any institution, any organization in America that denies the full human rights and the full civil rights of every single one of us. So as…

Sexual Abuse Survivors Share Their Stories at SBC Conference, Urge Everyone to Fight against Abuse

Sexual Abuse Survivors Share Their Stories at SBC Conference, Urge Everyone to Fight against Abuse

Survivors of sexual abuse shared their stories this month as part of the SBC and the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission’s “Caring Well” conference.

J.D. Greear, president of the SBC, told attendees at the Oct. 3-5 conference that those stories could encourage churches to help victims of sexual abuse, the Christian Post reports.

“This is a Gospel issue. The credibility of our witness, and even more importantly, the souls of our people are at stake,” Greear said. “Caring for those vulnerable whom God has entrusted to us is a way that we can and we must put the trustworthiness of the Gospel on display.”

“Abuse is unspeakably tragic,” he added, “but this is the moment that the church can put on display the matchless power of the Gospel. Churches are equipped to do something unique, something our society cannot do because we can offer not just reckoning, we can offer resurrection.”

Susan Codone, senior associate dean of academic affairs at Mercer University School of Medicine, told attendees that she was 14 when a youth pastor in Alabama began abusing her.

About a year and a half later, she reported the abuse to the senior pastor, who fired the man, but then the senior pastor “picked up with me where my youth minister left off with me.” She said the pastor sexually abused her for the next few…

Christian Volunteers in Hong Kong Stand Between Police and Protesters, Hope to End the Violence

Christian Volunteers in Hong Kong Stand Between Police and Protesters, Hope to End the Violence

As protests for democratic reform continue to rage on in Hong Kong, Christian volunteers are putting themselves in the line of fire to keep protesters safe.

According to a BBC video titled “Doing God’s Work,” dozens of Hong Kong Christians are volunteering to stand between protesters and police – who have reportedly been aggressively violent toward the protesters.

Led by Good Neighbor North District Church pastor Roy Chan, dozens of Christians head out to protests each day and stand on the front lines of the upheaval.

“As Christians, when we see an unjust situation, we have to go out and guard the children,” Chan told the BBC.

“During this period (of protests), our church started the Protect the Children operation. We wear these yellow vests and fan out to different protest locations. Where there is conflict, we try to meditate, either between citizens and protesters or between protesters and police.

“As a Christian, this is what I can do for society, for God,” the pastor asserted.

At the scenes, the volunteers split up into groups of seven. Each group then forms a “human chain” as they attempt to belabor police advancement.

“That’s the self-sacrifice spirit. Beat us, don’t beat the kids,” Chan said.

The aim, the pastor noted, is for “Hong Kongers to not hurt Hong Kongers. And the policemen are Hong…

Bishop of Manchester urges Christians to pray following shopping centre stabbings

Counter-terror police are investigating after four people were injured at the Arndale centre on Friday morning.

Three people have been hospitalised following an attack by a knifeman who was said to have been “lunging at people” at random.

Speaking to Premier, the Bishop of Manchester offered his prayers to all those involved: “Heavenly Father we hope before we the situation at the centre in central Manchester today.

“We pray for all those affected by it and those whose lives and livelihoods may be affected by it in the future.

“We pray your peace upon those who are worried. We pray your healing upon those who are hurt. We pray your justice and your mercy through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

The incident comes two years after a suicide bomber carried out an attack at an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena in which 23 people died.

Bishop David has encouraged the Church to take a prayerful response as details of the incident continue to unfold.

He said: “I think it’s really important that we don’t speculate as to what the motives or issues might be that underlie this – that will come up, I’m sure, in good time.”

“Pray for all those who’ve been caught up in it – being involved in an incident like this can be very traumatic, it might take people a long time before they feel able to return to the centre.

“Pray for the police and the responders, but also for the staff who work there.”

Bishop David commended the strength and unity of the people of Manchester in…

17 Percent of Evangelical Teens Aren’t in Public School, Survey Shows

17 Percent of Evangelical Teens Aren’t in Public School, Survey Shows

More than one in 10 evangelical teenagers in the United States are homeschooled and an additional six percent are in private school, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.

All total, 17 percent of evangelical teens ages 13-17 are not in public school in the United States – the highest percentage among all Christian groups and more than double that of teens who aren’t affiliated with any religion, the survey found.

Additionally, the 11 percent of evangelical teens who are homeschooled is the highest among all Christian groups and, again, more than twice as much as that of unaffiliated teens. It’s also nearly double the national average (6 percent).

Five percent of evangelical teens attend a religious private school, and an additional 1 percent go to a non-religious private school.

Among other groups:

– 9 percent of Catholic teens attend a religious private school, 2 percent a non-religious private school, and 2 percent are homeschooled, for a total of 13 percent of who aren’t in public school.

– 4 percent of mainline Protestant teens attend a religious private school, 2 percent a non-religious private school, and 6 percent are homeschooled, for a total of 12 percent of who aren’t in public school.

– Among teens unaffiliated with any religion, 1 percent attend a religious private school, 1 percent a non-religious private school, and…
