Pope names anti-Mafia prosecutor as head of Vatican’s criminal tribunal

The appointment of Giuseppe Pignatone came two days after Vatican police raided the Apostolic Palace and seized documents and computers from the secretariat of state.

Also searched were the offices of the Vatican’s financial watchdog agency, which is tasked with flagging possible money laundering and other suspicious financial transactions.

The Vatican press office declined to comment further on the raids, saying only that they were based on a report from the Vatican bank and auditor general’s office about past financial operations.

L’Espresso magazine said the transactions concerned the Vatican’s London property holdings.

The magazine reproduced what it said was a Vatican police directive announcing the precautionary suspension of five Vatican employees.

Mr Pignatone retired in May as chief prosecutor in Rome, where he led investigations into political corruption and organised crime as well as Italy’s probe into the suspicious death in Egypt of an Italian graduate student.

Previously Mr Pignatone had been prosecutor in Palermo, Sicily and Reggio Calabria, where he handled major anti-Mafia investigations into the Cosa Nostra and ‘ndrangheta.

The Vatican’s criminal tribunal handles crimes that occur on Vatican territory or involving Vatican diplomats.

The penal code is based on the Italian criminal code with elements of canon law.

Some of the tribunal’s most…

Original African Heritage Study Bible Publisher, Cain Hope Felder, Dies at 76

Original African Heritage Study Bible Publisher, Cain Hope Felder, Dies at 76

Cain Hope Felder, a scholar who fought to show black people in the Bible, has died at the age of 76.

As a professor at Howard University and ordained United Methodist pastor, Felder paved the way for a deeper understanding of Africans in Scripture and called out previous racist understandings that erased black people from God’s Word, according to Christianity Today.

“Black people are not only frequently mentioned,” he said. “But are also mentioned in ways that are favorable in terms of acknowledging their actual and potential role in the salvation history of Israel.”

In his research, he deduced that Moses’s wife Zipporah was black; black people populated King David’s army; and, that Zephaniah the prophet may have possibly been black as well.

He also pushed forward the belief that Jesus was not white.

“We do not accept the fact that [Jesus has] to look like white Hollywood stars,” he said, continuing that Jesus’ lineage was a “mixed stock of people, certainly with African ancestry.”

In his early years at the university as only one of two black professors, he suggested a class on Bible references to Africa. Because the class was so unique, he was later required to seek permission to teach it.

He also helped start a reading series for African American Bible scholars and published the Original African Heritage Study…

Police hunt thief who stole from church after being given ‘warm welcome’

CCTV caught a person in a hoodie and baseball cap breaking into the rooms behind the church on Sunday morning and leafing through their items.

He stole five bank cards, mobile phones, an apple laptop and cash.

He had entered All Saints Northampton in time for the morning service and received a “hymnbook and a warm welcome” according to director of music, Jem Lowarth.

Mr Lowarth, 27, was in the church at the time and told Premier: “Our service started at 10.30, it ended around 11.45 and it was pretty quickly after that the choir members started reporting that some of their things were missing.

“We were singing, taking part in the liturgy as we do every single Sunday…I was playing the organ, I was playing the first hymn while the events took place.

“A nine year old girl was particularly upset, especially at the beginning. She was obviously sad she lost her things. She was also worried that parents would be angry at her for having lost them, which, of course, wasn’t the case.”

Mr Lowarth explained that the culprit seemed to have been checking out the church for a few days.

“He’d been hanging around the church, I was told, on Saturday – and earlier in the week – and actually on Sunday he was in the church. Before the service, he was handed the service leaflets and a hymn book and, seeing the choir process in, seeing the first hymn, was his hint that the choir rooms…

Trump Administration Faces Legal Action over New Refugee Resettlement Limit

Trump Administration Faces Legal Action over New Refugee Resettlement Limit

The International Refugee Assistance Project, which two years ago filed a lawsuit seeking to block implementation of President Donald Trump’s travel ban involving seven predominately Muslim countries, is seeking legal action over a new White House executive order limiting the number of refugees being admitted into the United States.

Last week, Trump announced a new refugee resettlement ceiling of 18,000 for 2019, a little more than half of the 30,000 refugees that were resettled last year and significantly less than the 85,000 refugees that were resettled in the final fiscal year of the Obama administration—the highest number admitted under his tenure.

Trump’s executive order shifts authority to accept refugees from the federal government to state and local jurisdictions, a move that resettlement agencies maintain will lead to confusion and possible discrimination.

“Under this new policy, a governor or locality may block refugees from being resettled in their jurisdictions even if a community of people stands ready to welcome them, even if family members have been awaiting their arrivals, even if resources and opportunities available make it the best place for those refugees to rebuild their lives, and even when the desire to keep them out is based on where they are from, the color of their skin, or how they pray,” the complaint reads.

message of forgiveness to murderer from victim’s brother

State District Judge Tammy Kemp also hugged her and gave her a Bible.

Brandt Jean, 18, said he was not speaking on behalf of his family but he himself did not want Amber Guygan to even go to prison.

Brandt’s older brother Botham Jean was murdered last September aged 26 when Amber Guygan, 31, claims she walked into his unlocked flat, thinking it was her own, and shot him.

She lived on the floor below and thought he was an intruder, when he was actually sitting eating ice cream in his own flat.

Guyger was sentenced on Wednesday for 10 years, something Jean’s mother has criticised saying it is not long enough.

Botham was an accountant for PwC but also lead Bible studies for the young adults in his church, Dallas West Church of Christ, and led worship at his Christian university.

Jessica Berry, a close friend of his and also a member of the church said shortly after his death: “It’s like a big chunk of the church’s heart has been ripped out.”

Brandt Jean said in court: “I don’t want to say twice or for the hundredth time how much you’ve taken from us, I think you know that but I just hope you go to God with all the guilt, all the bad things you may have done in the past.

“Each and every one of us may have done something that we’re not supposed to do. If you truly are sorry, I know, I can speak for myself, I forgive you…

Drew Brees attacked for supporting ‘Bring Your Bible to School Day’: Do non-Christians need Jesus?

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

Today is the annual “Bring Your Bible to School Day.” Supported by Focus on the Family, the day is intended to empower students and their families to live their faith boldly on campus and in society.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees recently recorded a short video encouraging students to participate. In a day when we need as many positive role models as possible, you might think Brees would be applauded for supporting biblical truth.

Not so.

Newsweek reported that Brees recorded a video “produced by anti-gay group.” Out Magazine described Focus on the Family as “Anti-Gay Extremists.” This is because they promote “biblical truths and values, reserving sexual expression for marriage between a man and a woman.”

Responding to a reader’s response

Focus on the Family seeks to help people find Christ as their Lord and live by his word. Such a mission is consistent with the two-thousand-year history of the Christian faith and biblical orthodoxy.

But stating that everyone needs Jesus is more countercultural today than ever before.

For example, Monday’s Daily Article included an appeal to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem” (Psalm 122:6) and for Jews facing the horrors of anti-Semitism around the world. Toward the end, I included this question: “Would you pray for the Jewish people during these High Holidays to turn to Jesus as their Messiah?”

A Jewish reader responded on our website, stating that my prayer for Jews to trust in Christ is “exactly what fuels anti-Semitism—religious superiority, intolerance and arrogance.” She believes that Jesus “would have only respect, acceptance and love for his people, and ALL people.” In her view, “there are many paths to God which God created so that we could all be in touch with the God of our understanding.” She considers my prayer for Jews to know Christ as their Savior “the highest form…

Newest WWE Theme Song Is Christian Band Skillet’s ‘Legendary’

Newest WWE Theme Song Is Christian Band Skillet’s ‘Legendary’

A popular song by a Christian rock band is the newest theme of World Wrestling Entertainment’s Raw.

The WWE show opened Monday’s night’s USA Network broadcast with a new theme song – Skillet’s Legendary– alongside a new stage, new logo and new broadcasting team, Newsweek reported.

WWE also posted a live performance of Legendary on its YouTube channel.

It’s not the first time WWE has used the band’s music. Monster and Hero were used for pay-per-view events. Both songs also were included in the video game WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010.

Skillet is one of the most popular crossover bands in music history and performs at both mainstream and Christian concerts.

Its music includes Christian themes, although it’s not overt.

“I will admit that it’s quite difficult to explain what Skillet is, and everybody has a different version of labeling it,” Skillet lead singer John Cooper told Christian Headlines. “And that’s why I never care if you say we’re a Christian band or if you say we’re a metal band.”

Legendary, Cooper explained, encourages the…

A Conversation with Immanuel Bible Church Pastor following False Hate Crime Claim: ‘Just as Repentance Is Immediate, So Is Forgiveness’

A Conversation with Immanuel Bible Church Pastor following False Hate Crime Claim: ‘Just as Repentance Is Immediate, So Is Forgiveness’

A Christian school was in the news last week after a black female student accused her classmates of a hate crime.

Amari Allen, 12, accused three white sixth grade boys of cutting her dreadlocks and calling her ugly, NBC News reports. Several days later, however, the female student admitted that she had lied about the whole incident. The students attend Immanuel Christian School in Springfield, Virginia, just outside the nation’s capital. The alleged incident garnered national attention, in part, because Vice President Mike Pence’s wife, Karen, teaches at the school.

Christian Headlines sat down with Pastor Jesse Johnson, the lead teaching pastor at Immanuel Bible Church, the church that created the school, to talk about how the church and school have reacted to the national scrutiny and how the school plans to move forward. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

What has the last week been like for Immanuel Bible Church and Immanuel Christian School?

Pastor Johnson: This was a difficult week. When the news broke on social media, we were scrambling to investigate, and completely shocked that something like this could happen at our school. As the evidence came to light – that the alleged attack did not happen – our shock turned to sorrow. We love the school, but more than that, we…

Church Leaders Protest Shocking Northern Ireland Abortion Law Changes

Church Leaders Protest Shocking Northern Ireland Abortion Law Changes

A number of church leaders have called on political leaders in Northern Ireland to restore the government in order to prevent sweeping new abortion legislation from taking effect later this month.

Though Northern Ireland is officially part of the United Kingdom, it is governed by a devolved and democratically-elected assembly which was set up in accordance with the 1998 Good Friday Agreement – a peace deal that brought the brutal, 30-year-long civil conflict known as “The Troubles” to an end.

However, the two leading parties, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and Sinn Fein, brought the assembly to a grinding halt in 2017 after accusations of scandal and disagreements over a proposed Irish Language Act which would ensure the Gaelic language’s equality with English in Northern Irish civil society.

The protestant-majority DUP supports a continued union with the United Kingdom and values British culture as predominant – the party is also fiercely pro-life. Conversely, the Catholic-majority Sinn Fein party, which has historic links with the IRA paramilitary group, identifies as Irish and wishes to see Northern Ireland adopt more culture from the Republic of Ireland – it is also pro-choice.

Sinn Fein’s long-term goal is to see Northern Ireland unite with the Republic of Ireland – something that is fiercely opposed by the DUP and protestant community as a…
