Sweden Bans Government Employees from Praying at Work

Sweden Bans Government Employees from Praying at Work

A municipal council in Sweden has passed a set of controversial new guidelines which prohibit government employees from praying during working hours.

The new rules, which were invoked in the coastal town of Bromölla by politicians from the Sweden Democrats Party, according to regional newspaper Kristianstadsbladet.

“In the regulation, we have cut out everything which could be interpreted as saying that you can take time off to pray during work time,” Chairman Eric Berntsson, told The Local. “Both we and the Moderates and the Christian Democrats thought that the regulations should be more precise.”

Berntsson insisted that the new rules were not dissimilar from employers cracking down on employees who take unnecessary time away from work for things such as smoking. He also noted that the ban was not applicable to any singular religion, but was instead a blanket policy for all faiths.

Shockingly, the new policy will apply to schools, nursing homes and council offices among other state-affiliated facilities.

Officials were also keen to point out that the guidelines will not affect the current break schedule allotted to staff members, but will mean that they are not allowed to take a single moment out of their working day for the express purpose of praying.

While many argue that the ban is a blatant violation of religious freedom, others argue that employees should be free to work…

Catholic mother appeals after judge approves abortion for pregnant mentally ill daughter

The woman asked Court of Appeal judges to overturn Mrs Justice Lieven’s decision.

Three appeal judges are considering the case at a Court of Appeal hearing in London.

Mrs Justice Lieven concluded that a pregnancy termination was in the woman’s daughter’s best interests on Friday after analysing evidence at a hearing in the Court of Protection, where issues relating to people who lack the mental capacity to make decisions are considered, in London.

Bosses at an NHS trust responsible for the woman’s care had asked Mrs Justice Lieven to let doctors perform an abortion.

Three specialists, an obstetrician and two psychiatrists said a termination was the best option because of the risk to the woman’s daughter’s psychiatric health if pregnancy continued.

They said the woman’s daughter’s behaviour could pose a risk to a baby.

Specialists also said taking a baby from the woman’s daughter would cause greater psychiatric harm than terminating the pregnancy.

The woman’s mother, a former midwife, was against termination and said she could care for the child.

A social worker who works with the woman’s daughter said the pregnancy should continue.

Lawyers who represented the woman’s daughter also said she should be allowed to give birth.

But Mrs Justice Lieven, who is based in the Family Division of the High Court, said a balance of evidence showed that termination was the best…

Biden Pledges to ‘Codify Roe v. Wade’ into Federal Law if Elected President

Biden Pledges to ‘Codify Roe v. Wade’ into Federal Law if Elected President

Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden said Saturday if elected he would “codify” legalized abortion into federal law in case the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.

“It should be the law,” Biden told the Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s 2020 Election Membership Forum in Columbia, S.C.  Other Democratic presidential candidates also addressed the forum.

“There’s no reason why” abortion should be illegal even if the Supreme Court took up one of the cases that “everybody’s worried about,” Biden said.

“I would codify Roe v Wade as defined by Casey,” Biden said, referencing the 1992 decision, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, that affirmed Roe. In Casey, the high court said abortion restrictions are unconstitutional if they impose an “undue burden” on a pregnant woman.

Such a federal abortion law presumably would require a friendly Democratic-controlled House and Senate. Although Democrats currently control the House, Republicans are in charge of the Senate.

Biden also promised to cover abortion within his health plan. He renewed his recent commitment to overturn the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding of abortion.

“No rationale can be offered that if you’re covered by the federal system, you cannot then use federal funding to seek reproductive health care,” he said.

Further, Biden said he…

Christian doctor faces new investigation over prayer with patients

Dr Richard Scott is a Christian and GP at Bethesda Medical Centre in Margate, Kent, who says that he offers prayer to patients occasionally – estimating he offers prayer to about one in every forty patients.

The GMC, which says it protects patients and supports healthcare providers by improving medical practice, wrote to Dr Richard Scott on 7th June saying it had received “some information” from the National Secular Society and would begin a fitness to practice investigation.

The National Secular Society raised concern after someone they say was described as “highly vulnerable” by an acquaintance was made to feel uncomfortable by his use of prayer.

The NSS said: “The acquaintance told the NSS that the patient felt unable to express discomfort and was not able to raise the matter formally or change GP practice.”

Tim Dieppe from campaign group Christian Concern, which is supporting him, told Premier’s News Hour that Dr Scott always asks his patients if they’re open to discussion: “Sometimes they’re not, and that he respects that and other times they are and they engage in the conversation.

“The National Secular Society are being very aggressive in saying he should be struck-off for having conversations about spirituality once he’s done his clinical GP responsibilities in the appointment with his patients and I think that’s way over the top. He’s a very good doctor…

Democrats Agree to Approve Some of President Trump’s Emergency Border Funding

Democrats Agree to Approve Some of President Trump’s Emergency Border Funding

The Democrats have finally agreed to approve at least a small part of President Trump’s emergency border funding, in order to deal with the spiraling humanitarian crisis.

The decision was announced by Speaker Nancy Pelosi Sunday, just a day after President Trump agreed to halt a series of scheduled deportations due to take place over the next fortnight. Though this injection of cash should aid the situation on the border to some degree, the two parties are still far from finding any enduring consensus on the issue.

“This legislation provides urgently needed humanitarian assistance for families, including funding for food, shelter, clothing, medical care and legal assistance, and will relieve the horrific situation of overcrowding and help prevent additional deaths,” Pelosi explained, according to the Washington Times.

The speaker went on to take a quick shot at the President, blaming him for the crisis which has seen thousands of migrants held in sprawling detention centers. “The president’s failed policies have exacerbated the situation at the border, where vulnerable children endure inhumane conditions that threaten their health, well-being and sometimes, tragically, their lives,” the leading Democrat fumed.

Trump has been at odds with the Democrats over the controversial issue ever since taking office. The President has continued to assert his…
