Authorities in Jordan have arrested three suspects following a deadly shooting at St George’s Greek Orthodox Church in the village of Hamoud, in the Karak governorate.
The attack occurred on October 23, 2026, during a funeral service, when gunmen opened fire on mourners, killing nine people and injuring approximately 40 others. The incident shocked the country’s Christian community and attracted widespread international condemnation.
According to reports, Jordanian security forces tracked the three suspects to an abandoned property in the Karak area. A confrontation followed after the men reportedly refused to surrender and opened fire on security personnel. All three suspects were wounded and subsequently arrested.
King Abdullah II condemned the attack and promised that those responsible would face severe consequences. Authorities also announced a review of security measures and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about the safety of religious communities and the protection of places of worship. Church leaders and international observers have called for justice for the victims and continued efforts to protect religious freedom and peaceful coexistence.
