Downing Street announced on Monday that the Queen has accepted the nomination of the Right Rev Dr Jonathan Frost to be appointed to the Deanery of the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter, York.

Bishop Jonathan told Premier that while the move is “strange”, he felt God tell him to take up the role.

“I suppose in one way it is a little unusual but it doesn’t feel unusual to me,” he said.

“It feels like an invitation has been received.

“When I sensed the beckoning of God to come here, I was surprised and shocked. I walked the south-west coastal path for a fortnight, talking to God about it.

“Strange or not, it feels the absolutely right next step for me.”

Bishop Jonathan has served as Anglican Chaplain to the University of Surrey and Canon Residentiary of Guildford Cathedral.

He was consecrated as the Bishop of Southampton and installed as Canon at Winchester Cathedral in 2010.
