Pope Leo XIV Receives Historic Religious Title from King Charles III in Move Toward Christian Unity
VATICAN CITY / WINDSOR, UK — October 23, 2026
Pope Leo XIV has been appointed Papal Confrater of the College of St George at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, with the approval of King Charles III, marking a significant development in relations between the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England.
The announcement was made on Friday by the Dean and Canons of Windsor. The appointment recognizes the historic relationship between the chapel and the Holy See and symbolizes spiritual fellowship, ecumenical friendship, and a shared commitment to Christian unity.
The move follows King Charles III’s appointment as Royal Confrater of the Papal Basilica of St Paul’s Outside the Walls in Rome during his state visit to the Vatican in October 2025.
According to the official announcement, these reciprocal appointments represent an important gesture of reconciliation between the two churches, whose relationship was divided during the English Reformation nearly 500 years ago.
A specially commissioned chair for Pope Leo XIV will be unveiled at St George’s Chapel in due course, while a mosaic icon of Christ, gifted to the King by the Pope, is expected to be installed in the chapel later this autumn.
The development highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen Christian fellowship and cooperation across historic church divisions.
