Former leadership candidate Stephen Crabb says Tory hopefuls will need prayer to stick to their own values

The Conservative MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire is supporting the Home Secretary Sajid Javid, a friend who he stood alongside on a joint ticket for the leadership in 2016 when Cameron resigned after the EU referendum, agreeing that Javid would be chancellor if Crabb won.

The pair pulled out of the race and Crabb then backed Theresa May.

This time, Crabb told Premier’s News Hour that he and Javid hold similar views on One Nation Conservatism and that Javid’s background would bring a unique perspective to help the Conservatives “be a more effective party in the 21st century”.

Crabb admitted that any leader would find it difficult to negotiate Brexit but that the first challenge was for the potential Prime Minister was to stick firmly to the policies and passions they started with.

He explained: “There’ll be a lot of pressure on them to offer jobs to certain colleagues. Don’t forget, at this stage of the contest, it’s all about getting the votes of individual MPs and there’ll be MPs asking for certain jobs or certain favours for lending candidates their votes.

“There’ll be pressure on the candidates to make commitments, either funding commitments, or announce different priorities. And I think what’s really hard is to keep your own mind and to be your own person.

“I think if you are looking for a practical prayer suggestion, it’s for wisdom and strength for the candidates…

New York to Become 1st City to Offer Free Abortions via Direct Funding

New York to Become 1st City to Offer Free Abortions via Direct Funding

New York would become the first city to pay for abortions through direct funding if the city council approves a $250,000 proposed allocation to the New York Abortion Access Fund.

The money is for low-income women and part of a new budget. The city council is expected to vote this week.

Supporters championed the new fund by saying the money is for citizens of New York and other states, too.

“This initiative not only makes New York the first city in the nation to directly fund abortion services, but also lets any American who is facing increasing abortion restrictions in their home state know that they can come and get the services they need in the Five Boroughs,” Councilwoman Carlina Rivera said in a statement, according to the New York Post. “This fund is just another signal, another example of how New York State and New York City has to be that leader on this issue.”

Although other cities fund abortion through government-run insurance, it is thought New York would become the first city to set aside money specifically for abortion.

The New York Abortion Access Fund celebrated the news on Facebook: “That makes NYC the first city in the country to directly fund abortions – and that’s something to celebrate!” The organization, according to its website, “supports anyone who is unable to pay fully for an abortion and is living in or traveling to…

Female players to represent Anglican Church in big game against Vatican

Thea Smith and Becky Heath-Taylor will be the first women to play for the Archbishop of Canterbury XI, in a match to encourage stronger relationships between church denominations.

Ms Heath Taylor is currently in training for priesthood at Trinity College, Bristol and Ms Smith is due to be ordained the day before she heads to Rome for the match.

Ms Smith told Premier it was exciting to help represent positive change within the church.

She said: “The face of women’s sport is changing and the church has caught wind of that.

“And the face of our ecumenical church relationships are changing and improving.

“Thy Kingdom Come at Pentecost last weekend is a great example of this, the number of denominations that are involved in that now is incredible. Pope Francis and Justin Welby worked particularly closely on that.”

The two sides will go head to head on Thursday 4th July at the Capannelle Ground in Rome.

Supreme Court Hands Christian Bakers Win in Same-Sex Case, Vacates Lower Court

Supreme Court Hands Christian Bakers Win in Same-Sex Case, Vacates Lower Court

The U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday handed religious liberty advocates a victory Monday when it vacated a lower court’s opinion that had ordered a Christian baker to design a cake for a same-sex wedding.

At issue was a ruling by the Oregon Court of Appeals that upheld a state decision forcing Aaron and Melissa Klein to pay a $135,000 penalty after they refused to design a cake celebrating a wedding for a lesbian couple. The Kleins eventually closed their business, known as “Sweet Cakes by Melissa.”

The U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday issued a one-paragraph order vacating the judgment and sending it back down to the Oregon Court of Appeals.

“The petition for a writ of certiorari is granted. The judgment is vacated, and the case is remanded to the Court of Appeals of Oregon for further consideration in light of Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Comm’n,” the unsigned order read.

Masterpiece was a 2018 ruling in which the Supreme Court sided with a Colorado baker who refused to design a wedding cake for a gay couple. Former Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy ruled the Colorado Civil Rights Commission demonstrated hostility toward religion when it ordered bakery owner Jack Phillips to design the cake.

The Kleins are represented by First Liberty Institute.

“This is a victory for Aaron and Melissa Klein and for religious…

Christian boxer motivated by prayer minutes before Las Vegas debut

The heavyweight champion won after just two rounds in the ring, maintaining his unbeaten record.

In a video on the YouTube channel iFL TV, Fury is shown gathering his team before praying: “Heavenly father we come to you in the mighty name of Jesus.

“Give both men strength tonight, give both men the power to give their best performances and let both men come out of the ring safely.

“As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death i will fear no evil and those who bring weapons against me shall not prosper.”

In an unusual move, Fury asked a Muslim member of his team to pray also.

Israel Announces New Golan Heights Settlement Called ‘Trump Heights’

Israel Announces New Golan Heights Settlement Called ‘Trump Heights’

Over the weekend, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a new settlement in Golan Heights named after President Donald Trump, unveiling a large sign that featured both the Israeli and American flags.

“We are proud that we have the opportunity to establish a new settlement and to give thanks to a great friend,” Netanyahu said, according to CNN, during a celebratory cabinet meeting at the new site. “We will continue to grow and develop the Golan for all of our citizens — Jews and non-Jews together.”

The settlement was named after Trump, who defied international opinion in supporting Israel’s sovereignty in the Golan Heights. No building plans have yet been made, but the settlement will be built near Kela in the northern Golan Heights.

The Golan Heights is a piece of land seized by Israel from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967. The UN Security Council has claimed that Israel’s authority in that territory is “null and void and without legal effect.” No other country in the world, besides the U.S., has acknowledged Israel’s authority in the region.

“This is a historic day,” Netanyahu said, calling Trump a “friend of Israel,” according to the BBC.

US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman was in the audience at the unveiling.

“I want to thank you for holding the cabinet meeting and for the extraordinary gesture that…

Ministers make it easier for churches to set up faith schools

The first new state Catholic school in six years is set to open.

The government announced 22 new free schools last week and will give permission to Hampton Waters Roman Catholic voluntary aided school in Peterborough.

It would be the first new Catholic state school since 2013 and would take pupils from the Catholic faith.

Some have said the move is a backwards step that would lead to “further ghettoization”.

The Catholic Education Service has refused to open new free schools because of a 50 per cent cap on faith based admissions if they were oversubscribed.

Director of the Catholic Education Service, said: “We remain hopeful that given the government’s commitment to the voluntary aided route this will be the first of many.

“However, there remains a need for more Catholic schools in England.

“While this one is, of course, welcome, more will be required to fulfil the parental demand for Catholic school places.”

Southern Baptists Give Greater Attention to Diversity but Acknowledge More Needed

Southern Baptists Give Greater Attention to Diversity but Acknowledge More Needed

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (RNS) — At their annual meeting, Southern Baptists re-elected their president, adopted statements on their views about major cultural issues, and discussed how to deal with sexual abuse and racial discrimination in the church.

They also brought to center stage questions about church leadership roles that are appropriate for women in the church.

North Carolina pastor J.D. Greear, who was elected Tuesday (June 11) to a second one-year term as president, had emphasized a “Gospel Above All” theme for the meeting. He said that message was linked to multicultural worship music throughout the meeting and the inclusive approach Baptists took in appointing leaders to the convention’s various committees.

“We’re not where we need to be on those things, but I believe a signal has been sent that we believe that’s where we need to go,” he said at a news conference at the conclusion of the meeting on Wednesday.

“Now it’s on us to take the right steps at the right time and to move in a way that shows that it’s not words or virtue signaling but it’s something that we mean because we believe the Bible teaches it.”

Southern Baptist Theological Seminary President R. Albert Mohler Jr. said that in the past, issues of diversity were usually discussed mostly in hallways among small groups of church delegates, known as messengers. At…
