Christians react to Trump’s state visit to the UK

Donald Trump and the First Lady Melania were welcomed by the Queen on the first day of their three-day visit to the UK amidst the threat of mass protests.

A 20-foot ‘Trump baby’ balloon will be raised in Parliament Square, Westminster, at 9 am on Tuesday, according to organisers The Stop Trump Coalition.

Despite the protests about his visit, Sarah Elliott a Christian and chair of Republicans Overseas UK told Premier plenty of good can come out of it.

“Free trading arrangements are being discussed and the foundations for that.

“Also I think it’s very important that both of our countries continue to work together – especially on security and intelligence sharing.”

Mr Trump sparked controversy minutes before he landed at London’s Stansted Airport when he called the London Mayor a “stone cold loser” on Twitter.

It followed Sadiq Khan’s comments that the UK should not “roll out the red carpet” for Mr Trump.

Simon Barrow from Christian think tank Ekklesia told Premier’s News Hour Mr Trump’s language was unacceptable.

He explained: “It doesn’t seem…

Pakistani Pastor, Family Left Homeless after Being Attacked for Third Time This Year

Pakistani Pastor, Family Left Homeless after Being Attacked for Third Time This Year

A Muslim mob attacked and seized a Pakistani pastor’s home last week. Mission Network News reported that over 35 men attacked Pastor Aziz, his wife, and college-aged daughter in their home because of his growing Christian ministry in the area.

“Pastor Aziz, who himself had come out of a Muslim background, has been evangelizing and church planting in the province of Balochistan,” FMI (formerly known as Forgotten Missionaries International) executive international director Bruce Allen said.

During the attack, a police officer was patrolling the area and helped the family escape. The mob was able to keep his home, however, and the family is now homeless.

Aziz has been busy in the region for the past several years, planting three churches and outpost ministries along the Iranian border. But, unfortunately, this attack is not the first. The church planter has suffered two other attacks this year alone. And, more than 15 years ago, his five-year-old son was abducted and never heard from again.

“[Aziz and his wife, Ruhab] know the personal loss and what the cost is of following Jesus Christ in Pakistan. [It] doesn’t make it easier, but when a situation like this occurs, it brings past traumas up to the surface. So we want to pray for their emotional healing,” Allen said. “Aziz has considered that all of his belong[ings] are lost to him, but he…

Does a new study show all atheists are searching for Christ?

The Understand Unbelief study, which seeks to research the nature and diversity of “unbelief”, found that almost a third of atheists and 45 per cent of agnostics believed in underlying “forces of good and evil”, with many believing some events were “meant to be”, although they did not believe in the existence of God.

Aaron Edwards, lecturer in theology, preaching and mission at Cliff College told Premier every person is hard wired to seek out meaning in life: “You can see when you observe people, they want something to be true. They want there to be a wider holistic meaning.

“But that [meaning] doesn’t have to impact their own lives, so I think that’s the key really.”

Mr Edwards added that this search for meaning can only be fulfilled through Jesus Christ.

He also said the study shows that people are willing to embrace a faith system and Christians should be encouraged to share the gospel with more confidence.

“We’ve always had the same challenge of preaching the gospel to those who don’t want to believe – the thought that people believe in some abstract supernatural belief is really almost a given,” he said.

“We just need to point people to the ultimate fulfiller of meaning in God and in Jesus Christ and in the good news that we have to proclaim.

The report defined atheists as people who “don’t believe in God” and agnostics as people who “don’t know whether there…

New York Times Calls Unborn Baby’s Heartbeat ‘Embryonic Pulsing’

New York Times Calls Unborn Baby’s Heartbeat ‘Embryonic Pulsing’

Pro-lifers are accusing the New York Times of ignoring science by labeling an unborn baby’s heartbeat “embryonic pulsing” – language that wasn’t used in earlier stories but appeared in a May 29 report on the issue.

The story referenced a new Louisiana law that bans abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected. The bill was sponsored by a Democratic state senator and signed by the state’s Democratic governor.

“The measure would require an ultrasound test for any woman seeking to terminate a pregnancy, and forbid abortion if the test detects embryonic pulsing,” The Times story read.

Earlier in the story, The Times said lawmakers had passed a bill that would “ban the procedure after the pulsing of what becomes the fetus’s heart can be detected.”

Stories from May 7 and April 18 did not use the language and instead called it a “fetal heartbeat.” All the stories, though, called the bills “so-called heartbeat bills.”

Micaiah Bilger of LifeNews.com said the language “dehumanizes unborn babies and ignores decades of scientific evidence.”

“This new terminology is not based on facts or scientific evidence,” Bulger wrote. “It’s based on an agenda that supports abortion on demand. ‘… It disguises the truth and attempts to manipulate the public into believing something different from what they know to be…

Religious education given Ofsted boost

Campaigners for better RE say the new school inspection framework will put more pressure on schools to prioritise the subject.

It’s understood two-day long inspections will now put greater emphasis on the broad curriculum while a small number of subjects will also be chosen as a focus for examination. These subjects could include religious education.

Ben Wood from the National Association of Teachers of Religious Education (NATRE) told Premier this is a good change of direction.

He said: “Ofsted are really pushing the sense that they want a curriculum to be broad.

“I think there is a sense for people, both in education and the wider public of what’s gone on in schools has been narrowed recently and there’s a number of reasons for that.

“But what Ofsted are doing here is a saying that school curriculum has to be broad.

“And that means that while English, maths and science are important so is RE, and history, and geography, and art, and music, and PE, they’re all important, they all have a role to play.

“It’s very heartening to hear Ofsted saying that within that curriculum, RE has a crucial role to play.”

Guidelines for inspections now require schools to ensure pupils can reflect their own religious beliefs as well as having knowledge and respect for others.

Schools will also have to prove that teachers have expert knowledge of the subjects that they teach.

Ben Wood, who…

Trump Surprises Evangelical Church with Visit; Pastor Prays for Him

Trump Surprises Evangelical Church with Visit; Pastor Prays for Him

President Trump surprised members of a Virginia evangelical church Sunday when he briefly visited during an afternoon service.

Meanwhile, the church’s pastor is receiving recognition for his Christ-centric prayer for Trump.

“This is how it should be done,” Denny Burk, a professor at Boyce College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, wrote on Twitter. Burk pointed to 1 Timothy 2:2-4, which commands Christians to pray for “kings and all those in authority.”

Trump stopped by McLean Bible Church in Vienna, Va., to “visit with the pastor and pray for the victims and community” of the Virginia Beach shooting that left 12 dead, according to a White House pool report.

The date, June 2, also was the date Franklin Graham had asked Christians to set aside time to pray for Trump.

Trump did not speak while on stage.

“Many of you may have seen that there was calls to – particularly on this Sunday – pray for our president,” the church’s pastor, David Platt, said. “We don’t want to do that just on this Sunday. We want to do that continually, day in and day out. So I want to ask us to bow our heads together now and pray for our president.”

Holding a Bible in one hand and placing his other hand on Trump’s back, Platt prayed.

“O God, we praise you as the one universal king over all,” Platt prayed. “You are our leader…

Christian charity stands with China 30 years after massacre

In June 1989, students and workers occupied Beijing’s Tiananmen Square for a huge pro-democracy protest.

Chinese army troops brutally suppressed the peaceful protests and killed and wounded thousands of people.

To mark the six weeks of demonstrations in the Beijing massacre, vigils and events are being held in Hong Kong, London, Washington DC and other cities around the world.

CSW said in a statement that it “joins organisations and individuals around the world in remembering once more the brutal and tragic events of that time”.

The Christian Charity also said: “We stand with the surviving family members of the victims, who, three decades on, are still seeking justice and truth.

“We commend their courage and their determination, at the same time as we condemn the authorities’ forceful suppression of their rights.

“Under President Xi Jinping there has been a pattern of increasing human rights abuses: a stranglehold over civil society; a heightened sensitivity to perceived challenges to Party rule; and the introduction of legislation that curtails civil and political rights in the name of national security.

“There has also been a rapid and alarming decrease in freedom of religion or belief, marked by the closure of thousands of temples, churches and mosques, the detention and disappearance of religious leaders, and the stripping away of religious symbols and…

Pope Francis apologises to gypsy community for discrimination

The pontiff also paid homage to Romanian Catholics persecuted during communist rule as he wrapped up the third and final day of his visit to the country with a message of forgiveness.

Francis reached out to the minorities of Transylvania during the deeply symbolic visit about 20 years after St John Paul II made the first papal trip to the majority Orthodox country.

In his final stop before heading back to the Vatican, Francis visited a community of Roma, also known as Gypsies, in a newly built Catholic church that was so small organisers asked the clergy to leave to make more room for Gypsy families to get in.

There, Francis apologised for the “many experiences of discrimination, segregation and mistreatment experienced by your communities”, a reference to the second-class status of the Roma minority in Romania and throughout Europe, where Roma are more likely to be poor, uneducated and at risk of harassment, according to European Union studies.

Francis recently met members of Roma communities in the diaspora at the Vatican and knows well the hardships they face.

“History tells us that Christians too, including Catholics, are not strangers to such evil,” Francis said, in an apparent reference to World War Two-era deportation of Roma along with Romanian Jews that is commemorated by a Holocaust memorial in Bucharest.

“I would like to ask your forgiveness for this,” Francis said. “I ask forgiveness – in the name…

The Faster Pace of Decline Toward Death of Many Congregations

Based upon an aggregate of several research projects, I made some notes of growth and decline rates of churches and summarized my estimates into five categories by worship attendance changes over the previous five-year period. I compiled the following numbers ten years ago:

Growth and Decline Categories of North American Congregations 2009

  • Fast-growing (growing greater than 5% annually): 12%
  • Growing (growing nominally to 5% annually): 23%
  • Steadily declining (declining 0% to 3% annually): 34%
  • Rapidly declining (declining 2% to 5% annually): 21%
  • Declining toward death (over 5% decline annually): 10%

This past week I conducted the same exercise based on some of my updated research and the research of others and estimated the following:

Growth and Decline Categories of North American Congregations 2019

  • Fast-growing (growing greater than 5% annually): 3%
  • Growing (growing nominally to 5% annually): 24%
  • Steadily declining (declining 0% to 3% annually): 32%
  • Rapidly declining (declining 2% to 5% annually): 22%
  • Declining toward death (over 5% decline annually): 19%

My numbers admittedly are estimates, but they do have some quantitative basis, such as denominational statistics, research by LifeWay Research, and the data available in the increasing number of consultation and coaching requests we receive.

Obviously, the staggering reality of these numbers is the pronounced change in the two extreme categories. We are seeing a marked decline in fast-growing churches and a marked increase in churches declining…

Thirty years after Tiananmen: Persecution ‘the world has never seen the likes of’

Tiananmen Square consists of 109 acres in the heart of Beijing, China. Ironically, the name means “Gate of Heavenly Peace.” First constructed in 1420 during the Ming dynasty, it was the entrance to the Imperial City and the Forbidden City (the homes of emperors and their households for almost five hundred years).

When I visited several years ago, I was amazed by the massive size of the square. And by the fact that it displays no indication whatsoever that one of the most dramatic events of my lifetime took place there.

“Tank man” makes history

In 1989, weeks of pro-democracy protests led to demonstrations by more than a million people in Tiananmen Square. Thirty years ago today, the Chinese government ordered its military to reclaim the area.

Troops reached the square around 1 a.m. the following morning, June 4, leading to hundreds of deaths and thousands of arrests. An official death toll has never been released. Several dozen people were later executed for their parts in the demonstrations.

Mention of the massacre is banned in China still today.

Perhaps the most iconic moment came when an unidentified protester stood in front of a line of tanks, blocking their progress. The so-called “tank man” stood there for several minutes before he was pulled aside by onlookers.

The church’s “spectacular growth”

The same day the Chinese government massacred hundreds of pro-democracy demonstrators, Communist Party leaders watched as pro-democracy candidates in Poland supplanted Communist rule. Pope John Paul II’s support was indispensable to their success.

Writing for the Wall Street Journal, Nina Shea and Bob Fu describe what happened to Christians in China after the Tiananmen massacre. Shea directs the Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom. Dr. Fu was a student leader during the Tiananmen Square demonstrations and founded ChinaAid “to bring international attention to China’s gross human…
