Churches take on challenge to make Manchester Britain’s first ‘cycling city’

The Church of England in Greater Manchester is encouraging its churches to welcome cycling by offering bike racks, cycling cafes and safety courses.

It’s part of supporting the new Beelines project, a plan by cyclist Chris Boardman and Transport for Greater Manchester to transform Greater Manchester into Britain’s first ‘cycling city’, aiming to persuade two-thirds of those who currenlty sue their car as their main mode of transport to walk or cycle.

Chris Boardman said: “Churches are a fantastic hub that can bring people together. By supporting cycling they can help people get around in a more ecologically friendly, healthy and pleasant way.”

It also coincides with the church’s aim for Manchester to become an Eco Diocese.

The diocese has produced an interactive map on its website to help churches find where they will sit on the Beeline ‘network’ of walking and cycling routes.

The Diocese of Manchester commissioned Church Times artist Dave Walker to create a cartoon encouraging churches to welcome people who cycle.

The Bishop of Manchester, Dr David Walker, said “Beelines is all about making it easier to get about the city, on foot and by bike. We’re really excited about it because it will improve people’s health and it will help to people to get about. Our churches are ideally placed in every community to offer a welcome for cycling. It fits well with our desire to…

Israel Detains U.S. Graduate Student for Alleged Boycott Support

Israel Detains U.S. Graduate Student for Alleged Boycott Support

Israel is holding an American graduate student at its international airport, accusing the 22-year-old of supporting a boycott on Israel.

Lara Alqasem landed last week at Ben-Gurion Airport. She had a student visa and was traveling with her Palestinian grandparents.

An Israeli court orders that she remain in custody during an appeal. According to ABCNews, it’s the longest anyone has been held in a boycott-related case.

Alqasem is a former president of the University of Florida chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine. The student group supports the boycott.

The boycott campaign, known as BDS, includes Israeli businesses, universities and institutions. Meanwhile, Israel says the campaign is meant to hurt the country.

“Lara served as president of a chapter of one of the most extreme and hate-filled anti-Israel BDS groups in the U.S.,” said Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan. “Israel will not allow entry to those who work to harm he country, whatever their excuse.”

Last week, Erdan also said that he would not expel her if Alqasem apologizes and renounces her BDS support.

Alqasem, however, said she never actively participated in the boycott, saying she also wouldn’t promote a boycott.

“We’re talking about someone who simply wants to study in Israel, who is not boycotting anything,” said her lawyer, Yotam Ben-Hillel. “She’s not even part of the…

‘I Am Good at It’

(Photo: The Christian Post)Attendees lift their hands in prayer during televangelist Joel Osteen’s “Night of Hope” event at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 6, 2018.

WASHINGTON — Popular and often criticized Pastor Joel Osteen told thousands gathered at the Capital One Arena on Saturday that they need not waste energy worrying about what critics think as they “rise higher” in what God is calling them to be.

Osteen, pastor of the 45,000-member Lakewood Church in Houston whose television sermons are seen by millions worldwide each week, held his 189th “Night of Hope,” a two-and-a-half hour stadium event featuring worship music and messages from Osteen, his wife, Victoria, and other members of the Osteen family.

Osteen, the son of preacher and Lakewood founder John Osteen, told the crowd a little bit about how he used to be a “behind the scenes” person when he helped run the Lakewood television ministry while his father preached.

But after his father got ill and died in January 1999, Osteen took over as Lakewood’s pastor without having a theology degree.

As Osteen was pushed more into the national spotlight with the growth of his television ministry, he started gaining more supporters. However, he also had to “come to terms with” the fact that he was also…

‘Something needs to be done or the church will be destroyed’ says Nigerian Christian

Violence between Christian farming communities and Muslim Fulani herdsmen in the middle belt areas of Nigeria has increased in recent years, although the land-based rivalry is ongoing.

Many Christians fled the more Muslim Northern states because of lack of opportunities and discrimination and settled in areas such as Plateau state and Benue state. However, these areas now face violence and the increasing targetting of church communities.

Sulieman, a Christian from Nigeria, told Premier that Plateau state had experienced some of the worst violence: “This year alone we counted more than 56 villages that have been attacked” he said, “even last week, there has been at least three attacks…these attacks target these communities; burning houses, killing people and basically displacing people from their homes, from their farmlands and from their sources of income”

When asked why this was happening, he explained that it was a battle over land – as Christians move from the north to avoid discrimination they clash with those in the states they move to.

“The attacks from 2009-2014 have mostly been through Boko Haram in the north east, where several Christians were uprooted from their communities and many of those people ran from those communities to places like Jos and Plateau state to find a place of refuge, but now we struggle with communities being attacked by Muslim…

Pope must treat North Korean invite ‘with great caution’

Benedict Rogers from Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) said any forthcoming trip could only be endorsed if the pontiff took regime leader Kim Jong Un to task over human rights concerns.

He said: “On the surface, it’s of course a welcome invitation but I think it should be treated with a huge amount of caution.”

“If the pope does accept the invitation, he should only do so if he goes and speaks about the horrific human rights situation – particularly religious freedom – in the country.”

A letter of invitation has been passed on from leaders in Pyongyang to the President of neighbouring South Korea, officials in Seoul announced on Tuesday. Moon Jan-in is due to meet Pope Francis during a visit to Europe next week.

It comes four months after a much-anticipated visit between Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump in Singapore.

North Korea has consistently been named in Open Doors’ annual World Watch List as the country where persecution against Christians is worst.

Spokeswoman, Tamsin Taylor told Premier: “We know that there are 70,000 Christians imprisoned in North Korean camps.

“It would be really interesting to hear what the pope’s views are on a forthcoming visit.”

Following a similar invitation for the then-Pope John Paul II to visit North Korea, the Vatican said a papal trip would only be possible if Catholic priests were accepted there.

16,000 People Pack the House at Franklin Graham Revival Weekend

16,000 People Pack the House at Franklin Graham Revival Weekend

On Sunday, Franklin Graham took to Facebook to share his experience at the Festival de Esperanza.

Graham, an evangelist and the son of the late Billy Graham, participated in the revival in Monterrey, Mexico where, according to CBN News, 16,000 people came out to hear the word of God and worship together.

To express his excitement and appreciation for the event and its organizers Graham decided to share a series of posts on Facebook, one of which had a photo attached showing that the revival had a packed house.

Graham wrote in the post, “We praise God that hundreds of people responded to the invitation to turn from their sins and trust Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord tonight in Monterrey, Mexico.”

He continued, “I told the full house at Arena Monterrey that there was nothing more valuable than a soul. Your soul lives inside your body and when your body dies, your soul will live forever in one of two places—Heaven or Hell.”

He then offered this to the audience, “Your soul’s destination depends on whether you accept or reject Jesus Christ during this life. It’s the most important decision you will ever make. The Bible tells us, ‘For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?’ (Mark 8:36).”

Graham goes on to say that he is thankful for the many lives that were saved that night by the Glory of God and his Good…

Replica of the moon attracts visitors to cathedral

The model measures 23 feet across and is 500,000 times smaller than the moon itself. It is made up of thousands of Nasa satellite images of the moon’s surface.

It features alongside Tim Peake’s Soyuz TMA-19M space capsule.

The cathedral, which is celebrating its 900th anniversary this year, won a competion to become the sixth location to host the Soyuz space capsule as it makes a tour of eight cities across the UK.

It has been presenting a programme of space-themed activities during the exhibition, including a StarDome presented by Leicester’s National Space Centre and now, the Museum of the Moon by Luke Jerram.

The Very Rev Chris Dalliston, Dean of Peterborough, said: “We are delighted that Museum of the Moon will join Tim Peake’s Spacecraft in the Cathedral during our 900th anniversary year.

“Just as the Cathedral has been lifting our eyes heavenward for centuries, so these contemporary works of art and science help us to do the same, prompting questions about our place in the universe, and the mystery and love of God that lie at the heart of it.”

Indonesia Says Death Toll in Earthquake Has Risen Past 2,000 – Urban Christian News

The death toll from the earthquake and tsunami on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island has climbed past 2,000, the disaster agency said Tuesday, as authorities prepared to end the search for thousands of victims feared buried in mud and rubble in the hardest-hit neighborhoods.

Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the toll from the Sept. 28 twin disasters had climbed to 2,010. He said authorities will hold prayers Thursday to mark the end of the search in the Petobo, Balaroa and Jono Oge areas of Palu city, where the quake caused loose soil to liquefy, swallowing houses and burying the occupants with them.

Efforts to retrieve bodies, many entombed under mud and rubble as deep as 3 meters (10 feet), will not continue because of the difficult terrain and advanced state of decomposition that made the bodies unrecognizable and could cause contamination, Nugroho said.

“On Oct. 11, we will hold joint prayers in Balaroa, Petobo and Jono Oge to end the evacuation of bodies,” he told a daily news briefing on the relief efforts. While the official search will end, Nugroho said authorities will not stop villagers from continuing to dig through the ruins for their loved ones.

The areas, which now look like vast wastelands, will be turned into memorial parks to remember the victims, and survivors will be relocated to safer locations, he said.

Nugroho said the disaster agency has not yet been able to verify unofficial estimates from village chiefs in Balaroa and Petobo that 5,000 people are missing in the two areas.

He said the region had recorded 508 aftershocks since the magnitude 7.5…

Mother’s Union elects first non-UK president in 142 years

History was made when a record number of the Christian group’s leaders from around the globe voted for Sheran Harper from Guyana to represent and lead the 142 year old movement’s four million members in 84 countries.

“I am delighted to accept the role of Worldwide President for the new triennium,” Harper said in a statement.

“I feel very excited and privileged and I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our members who voted to make this dream a reality.”

While Harper was born in the UK, she grew up in the Caribbean and later worked with the Ministry of Health in Guyana where she opened and managed new physiotherapy departments in hospitals throughout the country.

She joined Mother’s Union 17-years-ago and has since been responsible for the roll-out of their parenting programmes in 23 countries.

Further changes have been brought into place including the election of eleven trustees from within eleven zones worldwide – five from the provinces within Britain and Ireland and six from outside.

The current worldwide president, Lynne Tembey, oversaw the constitutional changes with the current board’s help.

She said: “I thank God for his abundant blessings and his unfailing loving guidance.

“I pray that the Lord will continue to guide members and leaders everywhere and especially Sheran and the new worldwide board as they take up leadership of the Worldwide Mothers’ Union for the…
