Trump Plans to Release Middle East Peace Plan within Next Four Months


President Donald Trump says he will deliver a “fair” Middle East peace plan within the next two to four months.


According to The Independent, Trump told the United Nations General Assembly in New York that “a lot of progress has been made” in hopes for peace in the Middle East.


Israel and Palestine last negotiated peace in 2014.


“I really believe something will happen,” he said. “It is a dream of mine to be able to get that done prior to the end of my first term.”


Trump also said he supported a two-state solution, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he preferred that the Palestinians govern themselves but do not “threaten” Israel.


“I’ll look at it,” he said of Trump’s coming peace plan. “In fact, I was — you know, I always said that I’m willing to look at peace proposals put forward by the United States.”


Palestinian officials have not commented on Trump’s announcement of a new plan.


Conflict between the two countries has increased since protests started over the summer at the Gaza border. Israelis have killed some 190 Palestinians since the protests began in March. One Israeli has been killed.


Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, is spearheading the peace plan.

What Does the Bible Say About Drinking?

(Photo: Reuters/Tony Gentile)A recent study has revealed that red wine is the most potent alcoholic drink in terms of decreasing the risk of diabetes.

Alcoholic drinks have been around humanity for millennia, with a constant debate existing over whether it is acceptable to imbibe any fermented substances.

Within Christianity, there is no consensus on whether it is OK to drink alcohol. While some enjoy the practice, others make a habit of abstaining.

When it comes to the sacrament of communion, some churches have opted to replace actual wine with grape juice, in large part to appeal to those who may be harmed by consuming even the slightest amount of alcohol.

But what does the Bible have to say about drinking alcohol? Both the Old and New Testament speak of the practice, giving it mixed reviews.

Here are some of the verses about alcohol in the Old Testament:

“You and your sons are not to drink wine or other fermented drink whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.”-Leviticus 10:9 

“Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.” -Proverbs 20:1 

“Woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wine.” -Isaiah 5:11

Rebels in Burma Detain More than 90 Christian Leaders, Shut Down More Churches


YANGON, Burma, October 1, 2018 (Morning Star News) – After shutting down at least 10 churches in early September, ethnic Wa rebels in eastern Burma (Myanmar) have closed dozens of other churches and detained 92 Christian leaders and 42 students in a bid to curtail Christian activities, sources said.

 

The United Wa State Army (UWSA) in late September detained the Christian leaders and students in territory it controls in Shan state, leaders of the Lahu Baptist Convention said in a statement released on Tuesday (Sept. 25). Some students were also forced to serve as UWSA soldiers, according to the statement. 

 

The 52 churches in Mong Pauk Township have been shut down, and the UWSA destroyed three church buildings and removed all Christian symbols such as crosses, according to the ethnic Lahu Christian leaders. A few religious schools also have been shut down. 

 

Earlier in September, the UWSA troops shut down at least 10 churches, including six belonging to the Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC).

 

“The Wa officials instructed Christians in Mong Pauk not even to worship at home these days,” a local Christian leader based in Keng Tung told Morning Star News on condition of anonymity. “So, some Christian members dare not to live in Mong Pauk any longer. They came to stay in Keng Tung town as they are fearful.”

Who will win the theology crown?

Theology Slam will see 18-30 year-olds compete to prove they can think theologically about the contemporary world, by writing about theology and a modern topic.

It’s being organised by The London Institute for Contemporary Christianity (LICC), SCM Press, the Church Times and the Community of St Anselm and has been endorsed by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

 

Nell Goddard from the LICC told Premier why the competition is so important.

“We believe that theology has something to say to culture and to our everyday life and what we really want to do is find communicators who are interesting and engaging voices and bring theological and Christian values and expressions to bare on contemporary issues.”

People competing will write 500 words on one of twelve contemporary issues including Theology and #MeToo/Time’s Up, theology and the gig-economy and theology and Netflix.

They will also have to upload a short video introduction no longer than 90 seconds explaining why they’re interested in the topic chosen.

Three finalists will be chosen and invited to participate in the second round, which includes a half-day session with a public-speaking trainer.

Goddard said it would be “difficult” to judge and select the overall winner after each finalist delivers a 7-10 minute presentation because of the “really high calibre of candidates they’re going to get”.

Lifelong Atheist, Former Australian Governor-General Bill Hayden Baptized at 85


Famed Australian Atheist Bill Hayden recently dedicated his life to Jesus and was baptized in the Catholic Church. 


Hayden, 85, is Australia’s former Governor-General and was a renowned atheist for all of his life. Typically, as Governor-General, one would also be appointed the Chief Scout of Australia. Hayden declined this office in 1989, declaring that he was an atheist and the Scout Promise, which says, “do my best to do my duty to my God,” was in direct conflict with his beliefs. 


Now at 85 years old, this has all changed for the former politician.


In 2014, Hayden was sent to the hospital after having a stroke, and according to The Christian Post, it was this event that ultimately convinced him that God did exist. Hayden said the stroke made it evident that there is “more to life than just me.” He continued, “I had to make a dedication of myself for the good of others, before God. I felt that strongly.”


So, after years of denying God’s existence, Hayden renounced his atheism and joined the Catholic Church. Hayden said witnessing several selfless acts of compassion by Christians over his lifetime coupled with his stroke inspired his decision to come to Christ.

Boko Haram warn kidnapped Nigerian Christian schoolgirl is ‘next in line to be killed’

Leah was kidnapped in February by Boko Haram in Dapchi, Yobe state, along with 109 of her classmates.

While five died during the ordeal and the rest were freed, it’s been reported she hasn’t been released because she refuses to convert to Islam in exchange for her freedom.

 

At a press conference held on 29th September, Leah’s mother Rebecca said: “A threat has been sent out that, with effect from October 2018, Leah Sharibu would be next in line to be killed.

“I am pleading with the Federal Government to do whatever they feel should be done to release Leah before the expiration of the ultimatum.”

Leah’s captors are thought by officials to have been behind the recent killing of an abducted aid worker, held since March alongside two of her colleagues.

Saifura Khorsa, 25, worked with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and was kidnapped from the Rann camp for internally displaced persons.

California Democratic Governor Vetoes Bill Requiring Abortions on College Campuses


California’s Democratic governor vetoed a bill Sunday that would have required public universities to carry the abortion pill for students.


Gov. Jerry Brown, who is pro-choice, said in a statement vetoing SB 320 that the bill wasn’t necessary.  


“According to a study sponsored by supporters of this legislation, the average distance to abortion providers in campus communities varies from five to seven miles, not an unreasonable distance,” his statement read. “Because the services required by this bill are widely available off-campus, this bill is not necessary.” 


The text of the bill said the state “has an interest in ensuring that every pregnant person in California” who wants “to have an abortion can obtain access to that care as easily and as early in pregnancy as possible.” 


“When pregnant young people decide that abortion is the best option for them, having early, accessible care can help them stay on track to achieve their educational and other aspirational life plans,” the bill said. 


The abortion pill, RU-486, can be used at up to 10 weeks after pregnancy – a time when the baby has “a beating heart, arms, and legs,” said Lila Rose, president of Live Action. 


The bill sponsor, Democrat Sen. Connie Leyva, said she would reintroduce the bill in the future.

Matthew 24:12 “And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.”

The only reason that an abundance of iniquity would make anyone’s love for the Lord wax cold, is if he were not separated from that iniquity. As with Lot, a righteous man can vex his soul from day to day by hearing and seeing the unlawful deeds of the ungodly (2 Pet. 2:8).

We have to deal with the world’s system and those in it, but we need to be careful and maintain proper balance. We should shun relationships with those who influence us negatively more than we influence them positively.

Marriage is one area where this principle is especially true. There is no closer union in life than the marriage relationship. A believer who marries an unbeliever is directly violating this scripture and is toying with disaster. The Lord should be the most important person in our life. How could we possibly become “one” with a person who doesn’t love our Lord?

It is folly to think that after marriage an unbelieving spouse will accept the Lord. Although that does happen, it cannot be guaranteed. In fact, statistics are overwhelmingly against this happening. Regardless of that possibility, a believer who marries an unbeliever is directly violating God’s instructions here. It is not a good start to any marriage to spurn God’s Word.

Being unequally yoked with unbelievers just doesn’t work. Believers and unbelievers are as different as righteousness and unrighteousness, light and dark, Christ and the devil. One has faith and the other has none. One is the temple of God and the other an idol. Any Christian who doesn’t see this conflict is deceived.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. – 1 John 1:9

It’s wonderful to know you’ve been set free from the law of sin and death. It’s glorious to know you never again have to submit to the slavery of sin. But what do you do when, in spite of those wonderful, glorious truths, you still miss the mark? What do you do when you stumble and fall into sin?

Run to your Father and repent!

That sounds simple. But oddly enough we often do just the opposite. Instead of running to God, we let fear and guilt drive us further and further from Him. We start thinking things like, Well, I’ve missed it now. I might as well forget the rest of it and live like the devil.

Don’t make that mistake. Don’t let Satan talk you into sinning in one area of your life just because you missed it in another. When you get off track with God, just confess it and get right back on.

“But, Brother Copeland, I feel so guilty when I tell God what I’ve done that it’s hard for me to make myself do it.”

I know. I used to feel that way too. Then, one day, God said to me, Kenneth, when you confessed that sin wasn’t when I found out about it. I knew about it all the time! When you confessed it is when you got rid of it, when you were cleansed of its effects in your life.

When you make a mistake, when you miss the mark, remember, you have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous (1 John 2:1). Run to Him! He knows what you are going through. You don’t need to be afraid. He didn’t tear you apart for the sins you committed before you made Him Lord of your life, did He? Then how much more merciful and loving do you think He’ll be now that you’re His own? Now that you’re reaching out for Him and have a heart for Him?

Don’t run from God. Run to Him. Receive His forgiveness. Receive His cleansing. No matter how badly you’ve sinned, He’s eager to forgive and to cleanse you of all unrighteousness.

Read: Zechariah 3:1–7, Bible in a Year: Isaiah 14–16; Ephesians 5:1–16

I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you. Zechariah 3:4

Scooping up the smallest children, a frantic maid raced out of the flaming house. As she ran, she called loudly to five-year-old Jacky.

But Jacky didn’t follow. Outside, a bystander reacted quickly, standing on the shoulders of a friend. Reaching into the upstairs window, he pulled Jacky to safety—just before the roof caved in. Little Jacky, said his mother Susanna, was “a brand [stick] plucked from the burning.” You might know that “brand” as the great traveling minister John Wesley (1703–1791).

Susanna Wesley was quoting Zechariah, a prophet who provides valuable insight into God’s character. Relating a vision he had, the prophet takes us into a courtroom scene where Satan is standing next to Joshua the high priest (3:1). Satan accuses Joshua, but the Lord rebukes the devil and says, “Is this not a brand [burning stick] plucked from the fire?” (v. 2 nkjv). The Lord tells Joshua, “I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you” (v. 4).

Then the Lord gave Joshua this challenge—and an opportunity: “If you will walk in obedience to me and keep my requirements, then you will govern my house” (v. 7).

What a picture of the gift we receive from God through our faith in Jesus! He snatches us from the fire, cleans us up, and works in us as we follow His Spirit’s leading. You might call us God’s brands plucked from the fire.

Prayer: Father, we give You our thanks for rescuing us and making us right with You. We humbly ask for Your Spirit’s guidance as we serve You today.

God rescues us because He loves us; then He equips us to share His love with others.
