Beth Moore Tells The Atlantic the Struggle Women Evangelists Face


Author and Evangelical Beth Moore, 61, composed a series of tweets in 2016 criticizing the words and actions of now President Donald Trump and the ‘evangelical political machine’ at a great personal cost. 


This month, The Atlantic sat down with Moore to talk about the controversy surrounding the tweets she posted during the 2016 presidential election and the fall out that came with them. 


In the article, which will be published in the October 2018 edition of the Atlantic, the author speaks about how in October of 2016, Moore came to hear the infamous Access Hollywood tape where Trump is recorded talking about women in vulgar and graphic terms. After hearing the tape, while on a plane home from a ministry event, Moore filtered through stacks of newspaper clippings and transcripts to try to distinguish and understand the character of the then-presidential candidate along with the people who defended his words.


Moore told the Atlantic that she could not dismiss this as “locker-room talk,” like so many of her male counterparts had, noting that she was “so appalled.”


After looking into Trump’s comments and the defenses of so many evangelists, Moore decided to take to Twitter. The Atlantic writes that “she decided to compose the tweets that changed her life.”

Spoof comments appeared in the wake of a broadcast including Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov – who British authorities believed targeted former Russia spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in March this year.

The pair told Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of RT (formerly Russia Today), that they were visiting the Wiltshire city as tourists eager to see the “famous Salisbury Cathedral”.

 

Among the apparently false reviews later spotted on TripAdvisor, one read: “I wanted to visit the WorldWide famous town of Salisbury since I was a boy. Could say it was eventful.”

Asked about their intention for visiting Salisbury, Mr Petrov and Mr Boshirov said: “Our friends had been suggesting for a long time we visit this wonderful town.

“There’s the famous Salisbury cathedral, famous not only in Europe but in the whole world, it’s famous for its 123 metre spire.

“It’s famous for its clock, one of the first [of its kind] ever created in the whole world which is still working.”

One comment to appear on TripAdvisor following the interview said: “Came all the way from Russia to see the spire, which is 123 metres tall you know.

“Wonderful place to visit and very glad we came. We came two times. All just a short 3,000km hop from Moscow, well worth it!”

Open Heavens 18 September 2018 Tuesday MESSAGE:

Today’s memory verse is a prophetic message from God the Father to God the Son, speaking of how Jesus would possess the key of the house of David so that he could easily open and shut without any resistance. No wonder doors obeyed Him while He was here on earth. For example, He shut the door of the issue of blood in the life of the woman who had suffered for 12 years (Mark 5:25-34). He also opened the door of sight to a blind man at the gate of Jericho (Luke 18:35-43).

In today’s Bible reading, after Peter made a profound confession of faith received by revelation from the Father, our Lord Jesus Christ promised to give him the master key of the kingdom. The Lord could make this promise because He is the possessor of this key (Revelation 3:7). However, this promise is not only to Peter, but also to everyone who believes and confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord (John 17:20, Mark 13:37). It is amazing therefore to see children of God running helter-skelter in search of the master key, whereas they have access to this key already. Speaking about this key, the Lord said in Matthew 16:19:

“And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

The meaning of this scripture is that God the Father gave Jesus Christ the son the master key to open and shut and Jesus in turn handed this key over to those who believed in Him. So, we now are the custodians of the master key. How effectively we use this key is another question altogether. I pray in the mighty Name of Jesus that we will not be wasters of this great grace that can shut the doors of calamity and open the gates of blessings, not only for ourselves but also for those who God has put within the sphere of our influence. Years ago, a young man came to us for prayers because of premature death that had been ravaging his family over the years. We prayed a simple prayer to the Almighty Father, who through His Son handed the master key over to us and opened the door of abundant life in Christ to this young man, and this putted an end to the calamity of premature death in his family. In like manner, I shut the door of all forms of calamity against you and I open the door of celebration that has been shut against you from today in Jesus’ Name.

The Church of England should stop using male language in reference to God in order to attract non-Christians and better communicate the Bible message to a younger generation, several bishops told The Telegraph newspaper. 


“I don’t want young girls or young boys to hear us constantly refer to God as he,” said the Rt Revd Rachel Treweek, the Church of England’s first female diocesan bishop. She is the bishop of Gloucester.


“For me particularly in a bigger context, in all things, whether it’s that you go to a website and you see pictures of all white people, or whether you go to a website and see the use of ‘he’ when we could use ‘God,’ all of those things are giving subconscious messages to people, so I am very hot about saying can we always look at what we are communicating,” Treweek said.


A YouGov poll of self-identified Christians in Britain found that 41 percent believed God does not have a gender, 36 percent said God is male and 19 percent didn’t know.


The Rt Revd Dr Jo Bailey Wells, bishop of Dorking, told the newspaper she tries to avoid male language in reference to God.


“When I lead prayers or preach, I try to get around the problem by using both male and female imagery, and also by avoiding the need to say ‘his’ or ‘him’ too often,” she said.

A Philippine mayor said Monday that it’s unlikely any of the dozens of people thought buried in a huge landslide set off by Typhoon Mangkhut will be found alive, though rescuers were still digging through the massive mound of mud and debris covering a chapel where they had sheltered.

Mayor Victorio Palangdan of Itogon town in Benguet province, among the worst-hit by the typhoon that struck Saturday, said at a news conference that of the 40 to 50 people thought buried, there’s a “99 percent (chance) that they really are all dead.”

Mangkhut has killed 65 people since it tore through the Philippines. The storm killed another four people in China, where Mangkhut weakened to a tropical storm as it churned inland Monday.

Palangdan said rescuers have dug out 11 bodies from a the slide, which is covering a former miners’ bunkhouse that had been turned into a chapel. Dozens of residents sought shelter there during the storm despite warnings it was dangerous.

“They laughed at our policemen. They insisted,” he said. “They were resisting when our police tried to pull them away. What can we do?”

Hundreds of rescuers, including police and soldiers, scrambled to search for the missing as grief-stricken relatives waited nearby, many of them quietly praying.

Typhoon Mangkhut barreled into southern China on Sunday after lashing the northern Philippines with strong winds and heavy rain that left at least 64 people dead and dozens more feared buried in a landslide. (Sept. 16)

“We will not stop until we recover all the bodies,” Palangdan said.

Lord Bourne said in The Times on Monday that he hopes it will hopefully stamp out Islamophobia among mums and dads.

 

“Occasionally you find that parents are saying, ‘We’re not sure we want our kids to go to the local mosque’,” he said.

“They are then persuaded by the school that it’s a good idea and the kids come back and tell them about it and the parents then say, ‘Oh, that’s interesting, perhaps we’ll visit ourselves’.”

 

Islamic affairs expert, Dr Antony McRoy told Premier’s News Hour he’s unconvinced.

“It’s rather bemusing to think that taking pupils to any religious institution will affect the feelings of their parents.

“Instead, we need to ask what has caused Islamophobia amongst the parents.”

Another suggestion from Lord Bourne is a twinning system which helps churches and mosques work together.

U.S. Slashes $10 Million from Israeli-Palestinian Peace Program


The U.S. slashed $10 million of foreign aid dollars that were earmarked for peace programs between Israel and Palestine. 


Previously, the U.S. shut down a $25 million package that was intended to fund hospitals in Palestine. Funding was also blocked for the UNRWA, a United Nations refugee agency that helps Palestinians. Some $200 million was cut for humanitarian and development help in West Bank and Gaza. 


That money has been reallocated to programs between Jewish and Arab Israelis and “high priority projects elsewhere,” a U.S. embassy official told the media. 


The funds had been earmarked for disbursement in the fiscal year 2017, which ends on Sept. 30.


The Conflict Management and Mitigation Program receives about $26 million annually. The other $16 million is spent in other parts of the world, according to the New York Times. 


The cuts came after Trump’s administration reviewed the spending in Palestine. Trump had threatened to pull the funding if the country did not begin peace negotiations with Israel.


In recent weeks, that funding was cut.


“Senator Leahy regards the decision to cut off funding for the West Bank and Gaza as a sign that this White House has failed at diplomacy,” Tim Rieser, foreign policy aide to Leahy, said.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Monday that he will push for “irreversible, permanent peace,” and for better dialogue between Pyongyang and Washington, during “heart-to-heart” talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this week. His chief of staff, however, played down the chance that Moon’s summit with Kim will produce major progress in nuclear diplomacy.

Moon flies to Pyongyang on Tuesday for his third summit of the year with Kim. This one comes as global diplomatic efforts to rid North Korea of its nuclear program have stalled and questions have been raised about how serious Kim is about following through with his vague commitments to denuclearize.

“I aim to have lots of heart-to-heart talks with Chairman Kim Jong Un,” Moon said during a meeting with top advisers, according to his office. “What I want to achieve is peace. I mean irreversible, permanent peace that is not shaken by international politics.”

To achieve such a peace, Moon said he’ll focus during the summit on easing a decades-long military standoff between the Koreas and promoting a North Korea-U.S. dialogue on denuclearization issues.

Moon said he wants “to find a middle ground between a U.S. request for (North Korea’s) denuclearization and the North’s request for corresponding measures such as ending hostile relations and security assurances.”

During a June summit between Kim and President Donald Trump, the North Korean leader expressed his commitment to denuclearization while Trump promised to provide him with security guarantees and announced the suspension of major military…

The non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) is used by the NHS to test for genetic conditions, but it also reveals a baby’s sex at an early stage of pregnancy.

The Labour Party’s shadow minister for women and equalities, Naz Shah, has expressed concern about the tests. She said there’s a preference for boy babies in some minority communities. The result is some women are put under pressure to have an abortion if the NIPT results say it’s a girl.

 

Alithea Williams from the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children says using abortion as a way to select the sex of babies is more common in parts of Asia.

A BBC investigation highlighted that the practice has spread to the UK. According to SPUC, the pressure on women can take different forms.

“It might just be subtle disapproving such as why haven’t you had a boy? But it might be actual violence and abuse”, SPUC said.

SPUC have given only a lukewarm welcome to Naz Shah’s expression of concern. The organisation says most Labour MPs have a track record of opposing any tightening of the abortion law.

SPUC want concern about NIPT to be used as a wake-up call for the broader issues linked to abortion in the UK.

Williams believes abortion has now become available on demand, rather than within the limits set by the law.

California History Textbooks Now Include LGBT Heroes


California’s public schools this fall will, for the first time, have access to state-approved history textbooks that include the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans as mandated by a new state law. 


The law was passed in 2011 and went into effect in 2012, but it wasn’t until last year that California’s Department of Education approved history textbooks including the mandated information. 


Schools aren’t obligated to purchase the textbooks but are required to teach the history of LGBT Americans to elementary, junior high and high school grades.  


“Now we can mention [astronaut] Sally Ride was a known lesbian with a partner of 27 years,” Dominic Le Fort, executive director of Queer Education, told journalists at the Education Writers Association’s 2018 National Seminar in Los Angeles. The comments were reported by LASchoolReport.com. “The purpose of this is not just to put this information in front of queer children. It’s to be of benefit campuswide.”


Other prominent people who might be included in history lessons: poet Walt Whitman and social worker Jane Addams, according to EdSource.org. Another figure, Gold Rush-era stagecoach driver Charley Parkhurst, reportedly was born a man but lived as a woman.
