Billy Graham 22 August 2018 – God Provides

Topic: God Provides [Billy Graham Daily Devotional 22 August 2018]

For we know that when this tent we live in now is taken down-when we die and leave these bodies-we will have wonderful new bodies in heaven, homes that will be ours forevermore, made for us by God himself, and not by human hands. — 2 Corinthians 5:1 (TLB)

Death, to the Christian, is the exchanging of a tent for a building. Here we are as pilgrims or gypsies, living in a frail, flimsy home; subject to disease, pain, and peril. But at death we exchange this crumbling, disintegrating tent for a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. The wandering wayfarer comes into his own at death and is given the title to a mansion which will never deteriorate nor crumble. Do you think that God, who has provided so amply for living, has made no provision for dying? The Bible says we are strangers in a foreign land. This world is not our home; our citizenship is in heaven. When a Christian dies, he goes into the presence of Christ. He goes to Heaven to spend eternity with God.

Prayer for the day: Dear Lord, today keep me mindful that as Your child my real home is not on this earth, but that one day I will exchange this tent for a house made by You in heaven.

Powerful 7.3-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Caribbean Causing Damage From Trinidad to Venezuela – but Tsunami Alert Is Lifted – Urban Christian News

A powerful earthquake has rocked the Carribean and South America, as the first images of the devastation begin to emerge.

A tremor has shaken eastern Venezuela through to Colombia and Trinidad, causing buildings to be evacuated in Caracas and Bogata.

Cars have been flattened by collapsing walls, supermarket shelves have been completely wiped out and gaping holes in the ground have begun to emerge in Trinidad.

The quake has been placed at a 7.3 magnitude with its epicentre being 13 miles southwest of Irapa, the U.S. Geological Survey says.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said a tsunami was possible within nearly 200 miles of the earthquake epicentre, which could hit Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, although the warnings were lifted at 6.12pm local time.

Shocks from the earthquake were felt as far away as Colombia’s capital Bogotá while videos of Trinidad showed terrified customers leaving stores as products fell from shelves.

Billboards Removed After Image of Pastor Holding a Bible Was Called ‘Offensive’

Billboards Removed After Image of Pastor Holding a Bible Was Called ‘Offensive’

If ever you needed proof that Christianity is under attack, this Bible billboard controversy is it. Pastor Greg Laurie of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Southern California was forced to remove his billboard ads at local malls, all because he was shown holding a Bible!

Each year, for nearly 30 years, SoCal Harvest hosts a crusade. And Pastor Greg Laurie wanted to get the word out about the church’s free, 3-night event. So, he contacted a local billboard company to buy some advertising space in malls around the area.

The ads were up for about two weeks when the billboard company asked Pastor Greg to revise them.

“There was nothing overtly religious about it [the billboard image],” said John Collins, Harvest executive director.

In fact, with no markings on the Bible Greg held in the ad, it could really be any book. Yet, the billboard company reportedly received multiple complaints and one “serious threat” from folks finding the Bible “offensive.”

The Harvest team wanted to be good sports, so they changed the ad. They removed the Bible completely and simplified the billboard, so it just listed the dates and musical acts appearing. But apparently, the complaints continued. The company wound up removing the billboards completely and refunding Harvest their money.

5 Actions the Catholic Church Should Take to Stop Abuse

The horror of Pennsylvania’s Catholic sexual abuse scandal is still very present on the minds of the American people, and the world, for that matter. Many are wondering what the Catholic Church intends to do to prevent further abuses from happening. Some wonder what else can be done to help get justice for those who have been hurt.

Pope Francis issued a statement in the wake of the abuses:

“It is essential that we, as a Church, be able to acknowledge and condemn, with sorrow and shame, the atrocities perpetrated by consecrated persons, clerics, and all those entrusted with the mission of watching over and caring for those most vulnerable. Let us beg forgiveness for our own sins and the sins of others. An awareness of sin helps us to acknowledge the errors, the crimes and the wounds caused in the past and allows us, in the present, to be more open and committed along a journey of renewed conversion.”

Muslims Celebrate Eid al-Adha, Marking the End of Annual Hajj – Urban Christian News

Muslims around the world are greeting one another with the Arabic phrase “Eid Mubarak” to wish each other a blessed holiday.

Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of the Sacrifice, marks the end of the annual hajj to Saudi Arabia, considered obligatory for all able-bodied Muslims at least once in their lives. On Tuesday (Aug. 21), more than 2 million Muslims were to perform the final major ritual of the pilgrimage, the stoning of the devil, at the site where they believe Satan failed in his attempts to tempt the prophet Ibrahim to disobey God.

Muslims believe Ibrahim — Abraham in the Bible — had a vision calling him to sacrifice his son Ismail — Isaac in the famous biblical story —  which he interpreted to be a divine order.

“As he was about to slaughter his son, God revealed to him that he had fulfilled the purpose, and told him to slaughter a ram instead,” Imam Hammad Ahmad, who leads a mosque in Washington, D.C., told Religion News Service in 2016. “It’s symbolic of how we should kill our base desires — killing the animal within, to follow God’s will rather than our natural impulses.”

To commemorate the sacrifice and the unwavering faith of Ibrahim, his son and his wife, Muslims slaughter livestock and distribute the meat among their family, friends and those in need. In the West, many Muslims send money abroad or to local farms and butchers for the sacrifice.

On the morning of Eid, many Muslims dress up in their newest clothes, say their morning prayers and head to the mosque, then spend the day visiting family and friends. The celebrations typically involve…

U.S. Deports Last Known Nazi Guard in the States to Germany

U.S. Deports Last Known Nazi Guard in the States to Germany

According to The Washington Post, the White House made an announcement on Tuesday saying that it was deporting 95-year-old Jakiw Palij, who is a former Nazi camp guard.

Around six million Jews and other Nazi adversaries were killed as a result of the Holocaust and this year marked the 73rdanniversary since the camps were liberated. Thousands of Nazis and Nazi sympathizers have gone without consequences, but recently the number of people going to trial for these war crimes has risen.

Before Nazi Germany was liberated by the Allies, tens of thousands of Nazi criminals disappeared and went into hiding. Some perpetrators left the country, some left the continent, and others elected to hide in German cities.

On Tuesday, Palij, who was Polish born, was sent to Germany, and according to the Washington Post, the White House stated that Palij was the last known alleged former Nazi guard living in the United States.

According to the U.S. Embassy in Berlin, Palij, who was living in Queens, New York, was arrested for his crimes on Monday and sent to Germany early Tuesday morning. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper in Germany reported that Palij was moved to a nursing home upon arrival.

In a statement Tuesday, U.S. officials stipulated that Palij’s deportation was the result of negotiations by “President Trump and his team” and “collaborative efforts with…

(Photo: Facebook/Bishop Viviane Thomas-Breitfeld)The Reverend Viviane Thomas-Breitfeld, the first African-American female installed as bishop in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the largest Lutheran denomination in the United States, has installed its first female African-American bishop.

The Rev. Viviane E. Thomas-Breitfeld was officially made bishop of the ELCA’s South-Central Synod of Wisconsin at a service held Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Janesville.

According to an announcement about the installation service, social justice was a major theme of the proceedings, emphasizing Micah 6:8, “To do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”

In keeping with the social justice theme, Thomas-Breitfeld said in a statement last month that as bishop she wants to pursue a greater welcome toward many different groups.

“I hope I can help the synod become more open to change, so we can become more relevant to all, especially people of color, LGBTQI, and young adults, many of whom are choosing to not attend church,” stated Thomas-Breitfeld.

Ordained in 1980, Thomas-Breitfeld has held multiple pastoral positions and also served as co-chair of the Task Force on Women and Justice, ELCA; the…

7 Things You Should Know About ‘Beautifully Broken’

7 Things You Should Know About ‘Beautifully Broken’

William is a member of the Tutsi – a minority people group in Rwanda — and he’s on the run. The year is 1994, and militia from the Hutu major government are roaming the countryside, killing as many Tutsi as they can find.

If he is caught, he will be slaughtered.

Then he is given a lifeline. The United States will accept him as a refugee, although his wife and daughter will be forced to stay behind at a camp until he gets settled. It’s not a perfect solution, but it’s their best hope. Will they survive long enough to be reunited?

The faith-based film Beautifully Broken (PG-13) opens this weekend, telling the story of how the lives of three families intersected in a marvelous example of God’s sovereignty.

Once he’s in America, William meets a Christian businessman named Randy who also has a daughter and whose family life is crumbling. Though worlds apart in their upbringing, the two men encourage one another and even open an outreach center for other refugees.

Here are seven things you should know about the film:

1. It’s based on a true story. The movie’s backdrop is the Rwandan Genocide, which resulted in the killing of more than 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus in 100 days. But the specifics of the film – a man named William flying to Nashville, Tenn., and meeting Randy – are also true. All the main characters are based on real people in real…

Look to Jesus for how to deal with anger

Judith Bradley, who is a Christian, said it’s okay to feel anger but it’s what someone does with the emotion that matters.

“Jesus got angry and he got angry with injustice and that’s a very normal feeling about things that are bad,” she said.

“Jesus dealt with it by acknowledging that and addressing people that were causing the anger in a way that was clear and understandable.”

Her comments came after charity Police Now launched a campaign on Tuesday which encourages people to think again about seemingly socially acceptable acts of anger as society faces a recent increase in violent crime.

Scientific evidence shows that it takes just 90 seconds for the neurotransmitters that cause anger to flush out of our systems.

The Take:90 campaign included 90 second content including films, meditation and new ‘angrymojis’ for social media.

Bradley told Premier: “Anger is a very strong feeling of being uncomfortable or displeasured. The sort of things that upset us are when we feel a lack of respect or not getting what we want or, quite often, fear.

“It can cause high blood pressure and heart disease and all other sorts of stressful conditions. It is important to deal with it. If it’s bottled up, the silent anger is just as dangerous as the outbursts of anger that we can experience.”

5 Reasons Why Christians Should Care About Human Dignity

5 Reasons Why Christians Should Care About Human Dignity

Instinctively we all feel that human life matters. We cringe when we hear of a new act of violence. We are horrified when we read of crippling poverty. We want to help the least fortunate. But why? What is it about humanity that matters?

I believe the Christian story gives us the richest, fullest expression of what it means to be human. This is especially important in an age when people are asking what this means and, in an age, when human dignity is assaulted through war, famine, violence, abortion, racism and other sins. Christians should care about human dignity. Here are five reasons why:

  1. The Bible gives a rich description of what it means to be human. The opening pages of Scripture make the radical declaration that, of all of God’s beautiful creation, we are his most prized creation. Moses takes great care to describe the way God crafted humans from the dust of the ground and breathed into humans the breath of life. And David, in Psalm 139, describes the intricate way in which God’s crafts every human life in the womb.

  2. God has created each human in his image for his glory. Genesis tells us that humans reflect God. We were created after his image. This means humans have intrinsic value and worth. Humans were made by God with purpose, to both imitate him by ruling over creation and filling the earth with his glory.

  3. God loved humans so much he sent Jesus to…
