America’s largest megachurch, led by a celebrity pastor who’s the target of frequent criticism, says it has fully repaid $4.4 million in pandemic-related loans. Joel Osteen‘s Houston-area Lakewood Church became a “viral villain” last year for accepting federal funds through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). A spokesperson is now providing bank statements to prove the church has repaid the money, even though that wasn’t required.
Churches, despite being tax-exempt, were eligible for these loans, intended to help institutions and businesses weather COVID-19 shutdowns. Recipients didn’t need to repay the money if it went toward expenses such as salaries and mortgages.
Lakewood Church, which has an average weekly attendance of 43,000 and receives yearly donations of more than $40 million, says it didn’t apply for aid initially, “believing the shutdown would only last a few weeks.” But the seven-month halt of in-person worship during 2020 led to “economic uncertainty” and impacted the church’s “ability to collect substantial donations,” it states. On 24th September, the Lahore High Court (LHC) rejected a petition filed by a Christian man, Gulzar Masih, for the recovery of his underage daughter Chashman Kanwal who was allegedly forcibly converted to Islam and married to a Muslim man, Muhammad Usman.
Masih, a rickshaw driver from Samanabad, Faisalabad, stated in court that his daughter had been kidnapped by Usman and his accomplices. She is a minor and on September 13, she turned 14 years old. Therefore, according to the law, her marriage cannot be solemnised.
However, Mr Justice Tariq Nadeem ignored Masih’s argument and rejected his petition ruling that Muslim jurists give more importance to the mental capacity of the child instead of their age.
Justice Tariq Nadeem further said that Ayesha Bibi (Chashman’s Islamic name) is 17-years/old and she had given her statement in front of the magistrate that she is accepting Islam of her own free will and she has not been kidnapped. Giving Islamic reference, he also stated that Hadrat Ali (R.A) accepted Islam at the age of 10, so why then couldn’t a girl aged 17 accept Islam.
In this judgment, the court used a measuring scale of the mental age, not the age described in the Nadra’s birth certificate for the conversion of Islam.
Chashman was kidnapped on 27th July 2021, according to Masih’s statement on the same day. He dropped her at school on his own rickshaw, but she never came back. He said he searched for his daughter everywhere but couldn’t find her.
When we couldn’t find her, registered a first information report (FIR) at the police station in Samanabad, Faisalabad under section 365 B. The police were able to trace the girl, but they never gave us custody, saying she is Muslim as she had embraced Islam and also willingly married Usman.
Justice Nadeem remarked the Supreme Court had earlier ruled that Article 20 of the Constitution gives rights to citizens to propagate their faith but that does not mean a person can be forcibly converted to another religion by coercion or inducement.
The judge was of the opinion that neither the Holy Quran nor the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH)saying determined the minimum age for conversion to Islam.
Masih told, my family is very sad and disappointed by the court’s decision. His daughter is only 14 and this is according to Nadra’s (National Database & Registration Authority) birth certificate, and according to the law she cannot be married before the age of 16 but the judge is not willing to accept the fact.
He said: “I am not going to stop here but we will appeal against this decision.”
Nasir Saeed, Director of CLAAS-UK, has expressed his grief over the recent judgment and said it is very unfortunate that secular courts are making their decision under the Islamic law, while shariah law is not fully implemented in the country.
He added: “The issue of abduction, forced conversion to Islam, rape, and forced marriage remain an imminent threat for religious minority women and children, especially to the Christian and Hindu women and girls, and we are committed to supporting such cases and raising awareness about their persecution because of their religion.
“It is a very serious matter and is an open violation of the human rights treaties ratified by Pakistan. Pakistan is under pressure from the Islamic groups but the world is very concerned and taking this matter very seriously.
“Separating underage children from their parents in the name of Islam cannot be accepted at any cost.”
Mr Saeed said that in more than half the countries around the world, the legal age of maturity is 18 while in Pakistan it is 16 in Punjab, and 18 in Sindh, and the court and other law enforcement agencies should respect and implement it.
He added that this is a serious issue for the religious minorities as their minor daughters continue to be taken away from them in the name of religion. Such judgments are not doing any service neither to the country nor to Islam and this practice has to be stopped, Mr Saeed said.
He continued: “We have recently launched a new campaign to double our efforts to raise awareness and to stop this inhuman practice which cannot be acceptable in the 21st century anywhere in the world.
“Instead of turning a blind eye, Pakistan must pay attention to this festering issue and bring all the perpetrators to justice.”

United Methodist Pastor Danny Lybarger leads a church that literally meets at a bar, specifically at Good News Brewing. But this isn’t your typical brewery. The concept behind Good News Brewing originated after a group of friends went through Hugh Halter’s book Flesh: Bringing the Incarnation Down to Earth in their Bible study where they learned the power of sharing the good news.
Halter, who has been a pastor, church planter, missions trainer, and author, says his mission is to “encourage the church to be less churchy and instead work on creating social, personal, & spiritual ventures that serve our cities in ways that make God smile.”
It appears the owners of Good News Brewing weren’t the only ones following Halter’s missional words. Halter wrote in the book: “If you want a safe faith, you will never really know God because he doesn’t hang out in the shallow end much.” Pastor Lybarger took those words to heart. The new church plant now calls the brewery home.

Church Leadres report – In a recent episode of his Ask Pastor John podcast, pastor and theologian John Piper weighed in on whether it is permissible for married couples to engage in sexual role-playing.
The discussion came in response to three anonymous listener questions, which included some sensitive details. One listener explained her moral dilemma, saying, “My husband likes to use role-playing in the bedroom, and various levels of bondage and dominance…To the far extreme, he likes to fantasize that he is raping me.”

Completely unbelievable, ChristianNewNow report – A headline that Christ-followers probably hope was stolen from the popular Christian satire site The Babylon Bee is, in fact, very real. Living Faith Church, located in Little Italy in downtown San Diego, California, describes itself as a Christian Charismatic church and is pastored by two entrepreneurs, one of whom is a porn star.
Pastors Stephen and Angela Dela Cruz met while attending Bethany College of the Assemblies of God, a Bible college where Stephen earned his bachelors degree in theology and theological studies. Angela is an ordained minister who is also open about actively working in the adult entertainment industry.
The self-titled entrepreneurs celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary this past June and have spoken openly about how their marriage works on their YouTube channel, which is home to church videos and snippets of Angela promoting her industry’s work.
Stephen describes himself as a CEO, investor, hypnotist, sales trainer, business strategist, motivational speaker & trainer, and a planter of a progressive Christian church. He speaks in a supportive manner about Angela’s profession.

hat leads “people to discover their purpose, live in power, and live out their God-given potential!” The slogan reads: “This is a church for sinners by sinners,” then unpacks what that means by saying, “The leaders of this church are the biggest sinners, and this is the most non-judgmental church around!” The site offers little detail about services, location, or ministries, but features invitations for visitors to text or call to connect and offers automated weekly giving options.
Living Faith Church explains in its comprehensive statement of belief that “the Bible is truth without any mixture of error and is completely relevant to our daily lives.” It cites the gospel and references the Bible extensively, similar to other churches’ websites. In videos, Stephen offers a gospel presentation, asking people to pray a “prayer of salvation” after his sermons, and a band plays worship songs most church members are familiar with.
In an Instagram post, Stephen didn’t shy away from his wife’s participation in an industry that goes directly against God’s Word; is known for abusing women, men, children; and promotes sex trafficking. He wrote:
We have had many people question how we can do a church plant and my wife be a porn star lol so we are doing a special in person meeting in downtown San Diego for people to ask questions and hear our heart. We understand this isn’t a traditional church, but we feel called to this purpose and want to share. If you would like to be invited to this meeting, send me a dm and I’ll get you on the list. It might seem unfathomable to put the terms church planter and adult entertainer in same sentence describing the same person, but in Angela’s case, it is the reality.
In a very personal Instagram post, Angela called out people for judging her for her profession. The ordained minister explained to her followers that she once struggled with what she does, but with God’s help she has learned to love who she is. “Love me, hate me, I have learned to not care. People will always judge, but the most important thing I have learned is do I love me? The answer is yes. The many years of battling with insecurities, afraid of what others thought, lead me to a downward spiral that made me not love myself, felt unworthy, unvalued, and made me put a wall up towards people. I grew angry filled with pain, unforgiveness, depression, anxiety and hate. [sic]”
While not denying that her profession in pornography is what causes people to judge her, Angela said people never got to know her due to her occupation and instead treated her like a disease. She said people spread rumors about her, blocked her on social media, and didn’t want to be associated with her, which Angela said made her heart bitter. Read more …
