Open Heavens 16 June 2018 – An Eagle For Christ?

Topic: An Eagle For Christ? [Open Heavens 16th June 2018, Saturday Daily Devotional]

Memorise: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. – Matthew 7:14

Read: Isaiah 40:28-31 (KJV)

28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.

30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:

31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Bible in One Year: 2 Kings 14-15, Acts 11:19-12:5

MESSAGE:

I have taught my children on several occasions to imbibe the characteristics of eagle. One of these outstanding characteristics is that eagles fly alone. It is not out of pride or the empty feeling of self-sufficiency that they do this; rather, it is because keeping company with other birds during flight is a form of weight and distraction for them. A disciple of Christ must emulate this attribute of the eagle if he or she would safely arrive home in heaven at the end of his or her life.

The problem with many children of God is that they seem to have lost sight of the fact that the path they are following is so narrow that it cannot accommodate a crowd (Matthew 7:14). This is the reason why a disciple of Jesus Christ must possess this characteristic of flying alone. In 2 Corinthians 6:14-15, Paul clearly admonished that evil communication corrupts good manners:

“14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?”

It is disheartening to note that there are many wolves in sheep’s clothing in the Church today, which is why every purposeful believer needs to have the mindset of an eagle.

Another noteworthy characteristic of eagles is that they are selective about what they eat and where they live. Moreover, they never fly against the wind. As a purposeful believer, you also must be selective about what you consume: what you listen to, what you look at and what you expose your mind to. What you regularly feed your spirit, soul and body with will determine what you will draw on in the day of trouble. You just be selective of the company you keep because your companions strongly influence what you are exposed to. Like the eagle that never flies against the wind, the purposeful believer must also be mindful of the move of the Holy Spirit and ensure that he or she is never aligned against His work.

Beloved, I encourage you to choose to be an eagle for Christ from today, and the Lord will renew your strength according to Isaiah 40:31. You cannot fly by your own strength, but the Holy Spirit wil help you if only you give yourself completely to Jesus Christ today.

Prayer Point: Father, make me an eagle for Christ today and cause me to fly for You.

Churches across the Country Will Host Special Father’s Day Events This Weekend

Churches across the Country Will Host Special Father’s Day Events This Weekend

Christian strongman Stephen Miller will be spending Father’s Day at The Life Christian Church in New Jersey trying to break the Guinness World Record for “The Human Platform.”

At the Sunday 11 a.m. service, fifty men will walk over Miller as he lies on a bed of nails.

According to the church’s website, Miller and his father, Steve Miller, will be performing “amazing feats of strength, before delivering an empowering message for men and the women who love them.”

In one of the events, the Millers “will compete against two former NFL linemen – NY Jets’ three-time Pro Bowler, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, and NY Giants’ Super-Bowl XXXVII Champion, Roman Oben. Steve Miller will use one arm to compete in a tug-of-war match against Ferguson and Oben at the same time. The NFL linemen will then join forces with four other men, in an effort to pull apart the folded arms of Stephen Miller,” the church said.

The strongman performance is one of many special events churches across the country are hosting for Father’s Day.

At Cornerstone Church in Ohio, the church is hosting an “Every Man” event with breakfast and a special message from former NFL linebacker Akin Ayodele.

“It really is to bring men together from all walks of life. We don’t see much of that, almost at any time, other than a football game. So we’re just trying to really put our efforts…

Afghanistan Says Leader of Pakistani Taliban Was Killed by US Drone Strike – Urban Christian News

The leader of the Pakistani Taliban was killed by a U.S. drone strike, an Afghan official said Friday.

Mullah Fazlullah Khorasani was Pakistan’s most-wanted militant and blamed for attacks including a 2014 school massacre that killed 132 children and the 2012 shooting of schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai, who was later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

In March, the U.S. offered a $5 million reward for information on Fazlullah.

Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Mohammad Radmanish told NBC News that Fazlullah died in a strike in the Marawaya district of the border province of Kunar.

Earlier, Lt. Col Martin O’Donnell, a spokesman for U.S. Forces in Afghanistan, said in a statement that U.S. forces had carried out an airstrike Thursday in Kunar “which targeted a senior leader of a designated terrorist organization.”

Fazlullah’s death could ease strained ties between Islamabad and Washington even as Afghanistan observes an unprecedented three-day ceasefire with the larger Afghan Taliban.

Pakistan is considered key to persuading Afghan Taliban leaders, who Washington believes shelter on Pakistani soil, to open negotiations to end the 17-year-old war in Afghanistan.

Universal Credit has caused hardship but will be better, Christian Tory MP tells Premier

Unlike criticism in the past from left-wing parties or groups with a vested interest, this damning report was from their own watchdog and said  Universal Credit would “never be able to measure whether it has achieved its stated goal of increasing employment.”

Derek Thomas, a Christian and Conservative MP was asked by Premier about his party’s policy: “I don’t think it is embarrassing. You’re right that it’s taken longer than intended, it has been very complicated…There’s no question that families and individuals have suffered hardship that really should have been avoided.”

He said he is well aware of people who come to his surgery who have had a bad experience in the transition and said: “We do what we can to help people who are caught in that situation.”

Listen to the whole interview with Premier’s Cara Bentley here:

When asked about the practical implication, the Conservative MP for St Ive’s in Cornwall argued that: “we’re hearing that it is a much better system than what we had before.”

He said the previous system was complicated, had been around for a long time and that with UC “people know exactly what they’re getting”.

Thomas pointed out how, previously, people in his constituency found it was not in their own interests to work more than a certain amount hours because their benefits were disrupted: “The minute they go over those…

Prayer group starts for local politicians across the country

Christians in Politics have launched a new prayer network for those who work in local politics such as county or borough councillors.

Responding to call from Christians at this level of government, they say it will be a chance to share experiences and strengthen each other in prayer.

In a statement, Christians in Politics said: “We regularly hear amazing stories of transformation from those who are involved in these vital (but often thankless) roles. We also hear a cry from those working locally to be part of a bigger, supportive family. Serving within local government can be challenging at the best of times. And for Christians there are often additional tensions to contend with, trying to remain firmly rooted in Christ and living out Kingdom values, whilst working within the political system and trying to best represent the communities they serve.”

The group will be run by Helen Harrison who has served as a councillor for Thornbury Town Council since 2007 and as Mayor for Thornbury from 2016 to 2018.

Helen said: “I’m delighted to be able to set up this prayer network for councillors and those involved in local councils. Being a Christian in local politics can be a lonely place, and so it’s great to be able to connect folks from similar situations, as well as to pray together across the nation for and with each other. Obviously, all confidentiality is…

Presbyterians Aim to Revive Mainline Denomination at Annual Meeting

Presbyterians Aim to Revive Mainline Denomination at Annual Meeting

As the Presbyterian Church (USA) prepares for its biennial General Assembly in St. Louis beginning Saturday (June 16), many PCUSA leaders are hoping to address several contentious issues during the weeklong meeting — and to bring reform to the dwindling mainline Protestant denomination.

Items before the assembly include divestment from fossil fuels, a number of resolutions regarding the Middle East, longer parental leave for PCUSA employees and new ways to ordain leaders of immigrant congregations.

Immigration also is “sure to be addressed at the Assembly,” according to a post on the PCUSA website. Recent meetings of both the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and Southern Baptist Convention have addressed the Trump administration’s immigration policies, and Cindy Kohlmann of the Presbytery of Boston, who is in the running for co-moderator of the assembly, tweeted there was talk of proposing a resolution calling on the U.S. Department of Justice to stop separating children from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Nine years in prison for Asia Bibi

British Pakistani Christian Association (BPCA) held a gathering on Wednesday in honour of Asia Bibi and presented a narration of her arrest and the incident leading up to her blasphemy conviction.

Young boys held signs saying, “Asia Bibi Pakistani Christians are with you,” and “We are praying for Asia Bibi.”

Wilson Chowdhry, chairman of BPCA told Premier’s News Hour Bibi has been the victim of intense persecution.

“She spoke about the wonderful sacrifice Christ made of his life for us and asked the simple question, ‘What has Mohammed done for you?’ For that, this torture, this beating, this isolation, attempts to assassinate her…

“We’ve never heard of such animosity that would result in, in essence, the whole country being against her. It has been really awful; she’s been separated from her five children for the whole period of that time.

Chowdry said it’s very unlikely she’ll be set free, but all her supporters are still praying for a miracle.

In an interview from 2015, Bibi’s husband Ashiq talked about her decision to stand firm in her faith.

He said: “Asia believes she will be set free and her face is unquestionable, unshakeable! She is extremely proud of her Christian faith and would never deny the God.

“We have received offers of asylum in several western nations, and I will not regret leaving Pakistan, the land of my ancestors, as we have seen too much…

Surveys Show ‘Sharp Differences’ between Jews in US and Israel

Surveys Show ‘Sharp Differences’ between Jews in US and Israel

In January 2016, Mollie Shichman, a liberal Jew from Fairfax, Va., celebrated the Israeli government’s decision to create the first-ever government-funded pluralistic prayer space at the southern end of the Western Wall.

“To me, being egalitarian is extremely important,” Shichman, a college student, said of the proposed mixed-gender prayer space.

But excitement turned to disappointment when, in June 2017, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu backtracked on the plan due to pressure from ultra-Orthodox lawmakers.

In Israel this week (June 10-13) to attend the American Jewish Committee’s Global Forum, Shichman, who wears a kippah (yarmulke), a head covering traditionally worn by Jewish men, recalled being “accosted” by an Orthodox woman at the Western Wall for what the woman considered Shichman’s “immodest” clothing at the Western Wall plaza, a plaza behind the men’s and women’s prayer sections that isn’t used for prayer.

“I was at the far end of the plaza and took off my skirt” after visiting the Western Wall. “I had my shorts on underneath, but she called me a ‘goy,’” Shichman said of the Hebrew word for non-Jew, which the woman hurled as an insult.

“It was very hurtful to me. I’m just as much of a Jew as she is,” Shichman said.

While most Israeli Jews recognize the Jewishness of their American counterparts, the majority…
