Earlier this week, historic St. John’s Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C., was vandalized when protestors spray-painted “BHAZ” on the church’s 204-year-old columns, according to the Episcopal News Service.

“BHAZ” stands for “Black House Autonomous Zone,” modeled after the Seattle-based movement called “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” (CHAZ).

“There will never be an ‘Autonomous Zone’ in Washington, D.C., as long as I’m your President. If they try they will be met with serious force!” Trump tweeted.

The church has become a center point of controversy between the President and protestors. Only a few weeks prior, the church’s nursery basement was burned by rioters. Cabinet officials and the President, holding a Bible, walked from the White House to the church the next day to show strength, though some saw the move inappropriate.

On Monday, rioters also attempted to pull down a statue of Andrew Jackson in Lafayette Park, according to the Washington Post. Hundreds of protestors linked arms around the statue, chanting “Hey, hey, ho, ho, Andrew Jackson’s got to go.” Over 150 police officers and a low-flying helicopter stopped the crowd from toppling the statue.

Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) delivered an emotional response on the floor of the United States Senate last week in response to what many believe were dismissive and hurtful remarks by Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL.) Durbin’s comments came during a discussion about a bill Senator Scott proposed which is aimed at curbing violence against minorities by law enforcement.

According to Faithwire, Senator Durbin believed the bill did not go far enough. He said the bill proposed by Senator Scott was a “token, half-hearted approach.” The term token carries weighty baggage in discussions about race, as it is often used to describe minority hires that companies make in order to give the impression that they are committed to diversity. The comments were also considered especially insensitive since they were used by a white Senator to describe a bill proposed by one of only three Black Senators.

Senator Scott stood and first acknowledged that the day was painful for residents of South Carolina because it was the fifth anniversary of the massacre at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. The Democratic auditor of the third-largest county in Ohio could be booted from his own party after posting a tweet alleging that Planned Parenthood targets black communities.

Hamilton County Auditor Dusty Rhodes – whose opinions over the years often have diverged from the Democratic platform – referenced a Planned Parenthood in Cincinnati when he wrote on Twitter last Friday, “Just wondering when they are going to paint ‘Black Lives Matter’ on Auburn Avenue, you know, in front of that building where they terminate black lives and white ones, too, almost every day of the week.”

The tweet apparently crossed a line for local Democrats, who are threatening to remove him from the party, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. Cincinnati sits in Hamilton County.

Hamilton County Democratic Chairwoman Gwen McFarlin released a statement calling the tweet “sexist and racist.” She also pledged to issue a resolution for the party to support a different Democrat for auditor when he is up for re-election in 2022. President Donald Trump is expected to announce soon whether the White House supports Israel’s plan to annex parts of the West Bank.

According to CBN News, Trump’s Middle East team will meet this week. The team includes Jared Kushner, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien and U.S. ambassador to Israel David Friedman.

Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu is planning on extending Israel’s borders to include about 30 percent of the West Bank and Jordan Valley. While many see the annexation of the West Bank as a violation of international law, Netanyahu is hoping Trump will support the plan.

Trump’s Israeli-Palestinian peace plan, released in January, approved of the annexation, but some say the White House may be reconsidering after Palestine rejected the deal.

According to media reports, the Trump administration may be discussing a plan that takes a “gradual” approach to annexation of the West Bank.

Netanyahu also rejected parts of the peace plan, including a directive to create a Palestinian state. He says annexation of some territory could start as soon as July 1.

A plurality of Americans say abortion is morally wrong, according to Gallup’s annual Values and Beliefs survey, which also shows a record percentage of Americans saying divorce is morally acceptable.

The poll, conducted May 1-13 and released Tuesday, shows that 47 percent of Americans say abortion is morally wrong and 44 percent say it’s morally acceptable. Although neither percentage is a record, it continues a two-decade trend: The percentage of those who say it’s morally wrong has been higher than the “morally acceptable” position every year since the question was first asked in 2001.

Last year, 50 percent said abortion was morally wrong and 42 percent morally acceptable. When the question was first asked in 2001, 45 percent said it was morally wrong and 42 percent morally permissible.

The poll also shows that on four family-related issues – divorce, sex between unmarried individuals, having a baby outside of marriage, and polygamy – a record-high percentage of Americans say each one is morally permissible.
