Friends Mourn Darrin Patrick, Megachurch Pastor and Author, Who Died Unexpectedly

(RNS) — Darrin Patrick, a megachurch pastor, author and speaker, has died.

Patrick was a teaching pastor at Seacoast Church, a multi-site megachurch based in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and the founding pastor of the Journey Church in St. Louis, where he lived. 

He died of what appears to be a “self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to a statement from the church. No official cause of death has been released, according to the church.

Patrick’s unexpected death came as a shock to friends and colleagues. Robby Gallaty, pastor of Long Hollow Baptist, in Hendersonville, Tennessee, said that Patrick was scheduled to speak at his church next weekend.

“I just talked to him Tuesday and Wednesday,” said Gallaty. “This is the second close friend I have lost in a year.”

Gallaty first met Patrick in 2015 and had invited him to speak the following year at a men’s ministry event at Long Hollow. Just before the event, he said, Patrick called and said he was leaving the ministry.

At the time, Patrick had been a rising star among Reformed evangelical circles and was serving as vice-president of the Acts 29 church planting network. He was fired from Journey for what church elders called misconduct including “inappropriate meetings, conversations, and phone calls with two women” and an abuse of power.

The shooting of Ahmaud Arbery: Eradicating the virus of racism

Ponchaveli said that he was inspired to paint the mural after seeing the video of Arbery’s death on a news broadcast and learning that today would have been his birthday.

Ahmaud Arbery would have turned twenty-six last Friday. People across the US commemorated his life by running 2.23 miles, referencing the day he died.

A former high school football star, he was jogging near his home on the outskirts of Brunswick, Georgia, on Sunday, February 23. According to authorities, he was shot and killed after being pursued by two white men with guns. 

The men were charged last Thursday with murder and aggravated assault, two days after a shocking video of the shooting of Mr. Arbery became public. This tragedy is raising once again the specter of racism in our culture. 

Coronavirus as a metaphor for racism 

Administration officials announced Saturday that three members of the White House coronavirus task force, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, would self-quarantine after contact with a person who tested positive for COVID-19. Let’s take a moment to consider the pervasiveness of the SARS-CoV-2 virus as a metaphor for racism. 

Both are unseen in a person’s life until they become symptomatic. Both can infect people who do not recognize symptoms of the disease in their lives and thus think they are free of infection. Both often produce symptoms that worsen over time. And both can infect people who become carriers who infect others.

How Will the Lord’s Supper Be Served?

I just participated in my first Lord’s Supper via a streaming service. My pastor asked us to have juice and bread ready in our homes. I served my wife, and then I served myself as our pastor prayed and read Scripture regarding the Supper.

It was different, but it was meaningful.

To be clear, I know different churches handle this ordinance differently. Some call it by another name such as Communion. Some have a common cup. Some have different theological understandings of its purpose and meaning. 

Many churches in my tradition have very small cups of juice on a plate with cup holders. And many have pieces of bread on a plate for each person to handle, pick up, and eat. 

Will these practices change as we return to in-person services? Maybe I should ask it differently. How will these practices change as we return to in-person services? 

I don’t have answers, but I do have questions. I hope to hear from some of you in the comments and others of you on social media. I will post the questions at Church Answers as well. 

  • Will your church return to its previous ways of handling the Lord’s Supper? In other words, the new normal of the post-pandemic era means you will return to serving the Supper with few changes. Do you consider some of the potential responses to be overreactions?

The Queen may remain in self-isolation ‘for months’ and never return to regular frontline royal duties as the government looks to ease the coronavirus lockdown over the coming weeks.

Her Majesty, 98, who has put all her public engagements on hold as she resides with her husband Prince Philip at Windsor Castle, may not be allowed to return to her public duties due to the risk of catching Covid-19 ‘for years’ to come.

The claims come as the Prime Minister Boris Johnson today set out a tentative three-stage ‘exit plan’ and urged the country to return to work in a TV address to the nation from Downing Street.

Royal biographer Andrew Morton, 66, told The Sun that he feared the Queen, whose schedule is not expected to resume until the autumn, may never be able to return to her regular duties and will most likely be seen on TV or video links rather than in public.

He’s been singing since his youth and been a faithful member of KICC ministries since 1998 where he is also an active member of their music ministry. There is no doubt that Jubril-Art is a living testimony of the awesome power of God and an inspirational figure as can be deduced from his story. Ten years ago he sank into a dark depression when he was diagnosed with a kidney condition and given only three years to live. He turned to God.

Jubril-Art recalls in his wording saying – “I had a bout of depression, in full realisation that I was about to lose the most precious thing I had; my life. I needed faith, to believe in Him who is greater than I am. I chose life through the grace of Christ and the gift of the Holy Spirit. Fasting and denying myself the simple pleasure of a mealtime, I surrendered to the Holy Spirit, placed life in the affectionate hands of Christ. He who never fails didn’t fail me. I am now not only conquering, but also thriving.”

REBORN – Gospel music by Derek Homer.

Derek Homer, a Christian singer-songwriter of many styles, is happy to present his latest work – Reborn – to bring honour to our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Reborn, as described by Derek, is an upbeat praise song based on scriptures found at the start of John 3, where Jesus tells Nicodemus what it means to be born again. Derek was raised in a Christian home with a Christian background, continuing to attend church regularly (Pro 22:6). Like Nicodemus, he didn’t quite understand the concept of being Reborn is doing so in a Christian sense seemed redundant. Thankfully, the revelation of being Reborn came later, after many trials that brought Derek deeper into his relationship with God.

Derek explains:

For each of us, our birth represents the very start of everything. Nature and Nurture forges us into who we are: our likes, our dislikes, our dreams, our “personality”… but because we are born into this fallen world, we inherit it’s fallen state. We quickly learn to put ourselves first, seeking our own ambitions, fulfilment or welfare. Though we believe we are good, we often only consider how we might help others only after we feel “we are doing okay” ourselves.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ puts this in reverse. Through His Word, He tells us to love others first (Phil 2:3), and when we do we should go the extra mile (Matt 5:41). This does not come naturally to many of us, because we weren’t born into a state where this is natural. Through Jesus, we are given the ultimate way to wipe the slate completely clean, to be “reborn”.

As Nicodemus quickly realised, Jesus wasn’t talking about a physical rebirth. Christ mentioned being born of the Spirit (John 3:5-6), receiving a connection to new and everlasting family, adopting the traits and behaviours of our God. Our spirits are to become more like His Holy Spirit, treating others with love, patience and kindness (Gal 5:22)

My song, Reborn, is about God rescuing me from a fallen state, and my renewed desire to follow Him. He has rescued me from believing that my actions are enough to please God, when instead He deserves all of my heart. Perhaps most important of all, He has rescued me from the eternal consequence of sin. If that isn’t worth singing about, then what is?! My eyes are heavenward and seek only Him… “No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice…” (Psa 16:9).
