A Groundbreaking New Bible Translation – Literal Standard Version (LSV)

The recently published Literal Standard Version (LSV) Bible from Covenant Press has charted a fundamentally different course than the 20th and 21st century Critical Text translations. The new Literal Standard Version is based on the Textus Receptus, in line with the earlier Geneva Bible and King James. It’s a major revision of the literal translation by Robert Young, known popularly as Young’s Literal Translation, with a relationship to Young’s that is similar to that between the English Standard Version and the Revised Standard Version or the NKJV and MEV to the King James.

Readers will experience a translation that is even further along the formal equivalence spectrum than Young’s—in fact, the most literal English translation ever made—yet is much easier to read, given that the LSV translation is written in modern English. For students of the Bible searching for a faithful translation like the King James that is literal, à la Young’s or the NASB, but is written in the common tongue, they may have finally found what they’ve been looking for.

The LSV combines the strengths of many of the most excellent translations, including the literal nature of Young’s, the usage of the Name of God as found in translations such as the HCSB and World English Bible, and the capitalization of nouns and pronouns that clearly refer to God, Christ, or the Holy Spirit, as is the case in the NKJV. The LSV also follows the same path laid out by Young’s in translating verbs in the most accurate way possible, recognizing the aspectual or perfect/imperfect nature of biblical Hebrew, as defended by scholars like Wilhelm Gesenius, Heinrich Ewald, and Samuel Lee.

You can remember the verses of the Bible by having them around in your house with this beautiful Wall Arts and Decors from Christian Walls

While not necessarily as smooth as dynamic equivalence translations used in daily devotionals that incorporate paraphrase, readers of the LSV will get the closest glimpse possible into the meaning of the Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek text of the Bible, without resorting to an interlinear resource or the original languages themselves. The text is elegant and powerful, allowing the reader to experience Scripture in a much deeper and more accurate way. In addition, by utilizing justified text-blocks similar to the original autographs, as well as caesura marks in poetry, the LSV is the easiest English translation to publish, share, and distribute ever made—the first Bible translation formatted especially for the digital era.

TGTE Parliament Urges Catholic Church to Canonize the Heroic Bishop Rayappu Joseph as a Saint-Calls Him Voice of Justice

Bishop Rayappu lived a courageous & noble life dedicated to the pursuit of truth and justice no matter the risk- He publicly & unabashedly spoke truth to power

Bishop Rayappu was a powerful witness to a genocide that Sri Lankan state sought to conceal by ejecting all foreign presences and thus was staged without international witnesses on the ground.”

— Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE)

The Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) parliament during its monthly session paid homage to the late Bishop Rayappu Joseph who passed away in Jaffna on April 1, 2021, 15 days shy of his 81st birthday and Urged the Catholic Church to Canonize the Heroic Bishop as a Saint.

Born on April 16th in 1940 on the island of Neduntheevu, Bishop Rayappu lived a courageous and noble life dedicated to the pursuit of truth and justice no matter the risk, earning himself the moniker among Eelam Tamils “the Voice of Justice.” Ordained Bishop of Mannar in October 1992, Bishop Rayappu’s commitment to law, human rights, and dignity stems all the way back to his schooling. After attending St. Patrick’s College in Jaffna, he earned a doctorate’s degree in Canon Law from the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome, Italy.

TGTE’s prime minister, Mr. Visuvanathan Rudrakumaran, noted in his tributary speech during the organization’s meeting on Saturday, “Bishop Rayappu played an important role in establishing that Sri Lanka’s actions against Tamils in 2009 constitute mass atrocity crimes;Nobody has been able to challenge his finding based on statistical calculations that 146,679 people were killed. He was a powerful witness to a genocide that the state sought to conceal by ejecting all foreign presences and thus was staged without international witnesses on the ground.”

“In 2011, the Bishop, along with other high-ranking Catholic clergymen, submitted their long criticism of the state and its military actions against Tamils in the north during the conflict to the LLRC. Given the commission was created by the very leaders he and his peers denounced, this was an act of great courage,” Mr. Rudrakumaran added.

“Throughout his life, because he publicly and unabashedly spoke truth to power, Bishop Rayappu was the embodiment of the Tamils’ cry for justice for the Mullivaikal Genocide,” Mr. Rudrakumaran said.

Mr. Rudrakumaran then recalled to TGTE’s parliamentarians from around the world, “Bishop Rayappu also embodied the Tamil call for freedom and self-determination and played an important role in Tamil liberation politics. The Bishop called for the unity of the Tamil leaders, and by extension unity of the Tamil people. He also promoted the unity of Tamil Hindus and Christians in the basis of Tamil Nationalism.”

During his closing remarks, Mr. Rudrakumaran stated, “Although we have lost the Bishop’s voice, his vision and mission lives on in us. Today, Eelam Tamils worldwide are more united in our call for justice via ICC referral than ever before, for example, and so, continuing to dedicateourselves to ensuring that accountability for the crimes for which the Bishop risked his life to expose andcondemn is finally achieved is the greatest sign of respect we could and should pay to Bishop Rayappu’s legacy. From one voice of justice, comes many.”

Mr. Rudrakumaran was joined by other parliamentary members of TGTE in honoring Bishop Rayappu.

Ms. Rajanidevi Sellathurai, the deputy speaker of the TGTE said in her condolence message, “The passing of Rev. Rayappu is not only a loss for Eelam Tamils but also for the Tamils across the world.” She also emphasized the fact that no one was able to challenge his finding that 146,679 Tamils were killed during the final stages of the war.

Mr. Vijitharan Varatharajah, a TGTE parliamentarian, recalled in his remembrance speech that before 2009,Rev. Bishop Rayappu acted as shadow of the Tamil National Leader Mr. Velupillai Pirabaharan and the significant role the Bishop played in conveying thelegitimacy of the Tamil Struggle to the international community as a witness to the Tamil Genocide.

“Rev. Rayappu slammed the conscience of the world by giving the accurate number of the Tamil casualties,” Mr. Vijitharan said.

Mr. Vijitharan then recognized that even until the day of Bishop Rayappu’s death, the Bishop guided the Tamil People and strengthened Tamil Nationalism. He concluded by saying,” I bow my head to that sacred individual.”

Mr. Thavendra Rajah, a TGTE parliamentarian, also spoke, recalling that during the war, when the Sri Lankan state, in a calculated manner, reduced food and medicine to cause the physical destruction of the Tamils by saying there were only few thousands of people when in fact there were tens of thousands, Rev Rayappu bravely called out to the government’s lies, citing the state’s own reports that discredited its public narrative and exposed thereports to the world.

Mr. Roy Wicknarajah, a TGTE parliamentarian, in his remark stated that when the Sri Lankan armed forces were moving towards Madu Church Rev. Rayappu moved the “Our Lady of Madu” statue to an area that was safe. He stated that the area choses Rev. Rayappu was Thevanpitty in the de facto state of Tamil Eelam.

Mr. Karthikesu Kalaiyalagan, a TGTE parliamentarian emphasized the high esteem global Eelam Tamils held inBishop Rayappu by noting, “People in the homeland are requesting the Pope to give sainthood to Rev. Rayappu,” and called on TGTE to also make that request to the Pope.

Mr. Linga Jothy, a TGTE parliamentarian, endorsed that request. He also noted the important role Rev. Rayappu played as a testimony to Tamils’ spirituality.

Mr. Rudrakumaran concluded the TGTE parliamentary homage to Bishop Rayappu’s life by affirming that TGTE will join the call of Eelam Tamils in the homeland in requesting that the Catholic Church bestow sainthood on the Bishop, who, as required of a Saint, lived a life of “heroic virtue.”

PuLSE Institute Names COGIC Presiding Bishop Emeritus, Humanitarian Charles E. Blake Sr. to National Advisory Panel

Bishop Blake accepted the invitation of The PuLSE Institute to join the National Advisory Panel, which serves as the brain trust of the Institute.

Potential for good is radically enhanced when we join together. Those who are blessed should bless others. I am proud to serve on The PuLSE Institute National Advisory Panel. Doing good!” — Bishop Charles E. Blake Sr.

Bishop Charles E. Blake Sr., Presiding Bishop Emeritus of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC), the largest Black Christian denomination in the country with a membership of 6.5 million, and an international statesman and humanitarian, has been named to the National Advisory Panel of The PuLSE Institute (Institute for Public Leadership and Social Equity), a national anti-poverty think tank headquartered in Detroit, the nation’s biggest Black city.

At the National Advisory Panel of The PuLSE Institute, Bishop Blake will join Dr. Arun Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and a member of the board of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in South Africa, Sister Simone Campbell, a leading Catholic social justice advocate who gave the invocation at the 2020 Democratic National Convention, Dr. Bernard LaFayette, a top aide to Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. and the National Coordinator of the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign, former White House spokesman Robert Weiner, former presidential diarist Janis Kearney and other luminaries and figures to advise the Institute on issues of poverty and income inequality.

Bishop Blake accepted the invitation of The PuLSE Institute to join the National Advisory Panel, which serves as the brain trust of the Institute. Collectively, its members bring more than a century of impactful and transformative anti-poverty work to the Institute.

The addition of Bishop Blake, who is the senior pastor of the 25,000-member West Angeles Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles, California, which is the largest COGIC church, and one of the biggest churches of any denomination in the Western United States, brings a theological giant, and a dynamic and transcending force to the work of the independent think tank devoted to fighting poverty in Detroit and around the nation.

Over the decades the West Angeles COGIC under the leadership of Bishop Blake, has remained the home for spiritual renewal and guidance with members from loyal community parishioners to some of the nation’s Black cultural icons such as Denzel Washington, Stevie Wonder, Samuel Jackson, Angela Bassett, Magic Johnson and others. His church is a citadel of community empowerment on Los Angeles’ Crenshaw Boulevard.

“Potential for good is radically enhanced when we join together,” Bishop Blake said in a statement. “Ability constitutes responsibility. Those who are blessed should bless others. I am proud to serve on The PuLSE Institute National Advisory Panel. Doing good!”

Bishop Blake has distinguished himself as a major player on the local, national, and international stage. He has served on countless boards, coalitions, committees, councils, and executive teams. His influence is felt not only in inner-city Los Angeles, but also on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C. and in many other places around the world. He is a source of wisdom and council to religious and political leaders, including three former American presidents. President Barack Obama named him as a member of the President’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. A towering voice for justice and equality, he was also chosen as one of four individuals to address the Democratic National Convention’s first Ecumenical Service.

Bishop Blake is greatly respected for his practical leadership and compassionate service to others around the world. For example, in response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa, Bishop Blake founded and served as president of the Pan African Children’s Fund (PACF). Save Africa’s Children, a program of PACF, supported more than 200,000 children in 400 orphan care programs throughout more than 23 nations on the continent of Africa who were orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. In 2003, Bishop Blake was awarded the Harvard Foundation Humanitarian Medal for his work with Save Africa’s Children.

“The PuLSE Institute is honored to welcome Bishop Charles Blake to the National Advisory Panel. Bishop Blake has demonstrated sincere and persistent commitment to fighting poverty around the globe while leading one of the largest African American congregations in the nation,” said Attorney Tina M. Patterson, the president and director of research at The PuLSE Institute. “He personifies the spirit and leadership of the revered Black Church, long-renowned for its ardent advocacy for equality, human rights, and economic justice. Bishop Blake has wielded his massive influence with dignity, integrity and moral conviction in defense of those surviving on the margins of society, immeasurable qualities that are still necessary as we continue to face the challenges of inequality.”

The founding of The PuLSE Institute in 2018, was inspired by the writings of the esteemed journalist, author and culture critic Bankole Thompson, whose illuminating and influential work on economic and racial justice issues has elevated the discourse around poverty and inequality in Detroit and Michigan. Thompson, who is a twice-a-week opinion columnist at The Detroit News and a daily radio host, serves as the editor-in-chief and dean of The PuLSE Institute.

In 2014, COGIC honored Thompson with the “Centennial Journalist Award” during the denomination’s Michigan/Ontario, Canada centennial anniversary by the late Bishop PA Brooks, the former dean of the faith community in Detroit, who served as the First Assistant Presiding Bishop of COGIC under Bishop Blake. Thompson was recognized during the centennial celebration keynoted by Bishop Blake for being a powerful voice in the media championing issues that sit at the intersection of faith and public policy in the Black community.

“At The PuLSE Institute, we are honored to have his eminence Bishop Blake join our National Advisory Panel. His work at West Angeles, on the national scene and on the global stage, represents the best of humanity. Bishop Blake has a big heart and is deeply concerned about those who have been ravaged by inequality. His ministry over the decades has been about caring for the many people who remain invisible in our society and have lost hope.”

Bishop Blake, an institution builder and a standard bearer of Black Church leadership in the 21st century, became the Presiding Bishop of COGIC after the death of Bishop Gilbert Earl Patterson in 2007, and was re-elected three times to the Office of Presiding Bishop in 2008, 2012, and 2016.

The Easiest Way to Follow Orthodox Holy Week in both Languages

Happy Easter to all Christians worldwide, but mark your calendar if you are Orthodox, as your Easter this year, falls on Sunday May 2nd, and while most Orthodox have become familiar with a usual one-week delay between Catholic and Protestant Easter, this year happens to be different.

The larger question because of Covid-19, is whether to follow Holy Week services in Church or Online. Most will be online, and the best way to follow the services in Greek and English is with the Holy Week Easter book by Father George Papadeas, available now at patmospress.

Many parishioners and clergy alike, are faced with a difficult task regarding scheduling this important event, whether to hold Holy Week services online or in church, in order to help stemming the tide of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since 1963, PatmosPress, has published of the “Holy Week Easter” books in Greek & English, and has become the Gold Standard for all Greek-Americans. The Clergy have defined and praised this complete translation as “having saved Holy Week for Greek-Americans”

Fr. George Papadeas is indelibly associated with Holy Week for Greek Orthodox in America. His compilation and translation of the Holy Week services into one compact volume revolutionized the way people understood the services and made it possible for everyone to follow along in both Greek and English on opposing pages. Each of these books have been blessed by Greek Orthodox Clergy and hold a special meaning.

Holy Week is the precursor to the momentous event known as Easter, also called Pascha and Resurrection Sunday, as the oldest and most important festival in the Eastern Christian tradition .

Videos of each day’s services are available Online from the “Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America” on YouTube at:

We depend upon our leaders to guide us, and abide by the wise decision to “socially distance” and “self-quarantine” ourselves. This commitment to Greek Orthodox faithful in trying to meet their specific needs during this trying time has Patmos Press working 24/7 to supply the necessary books.

Post Pandemic…Get Ready for the Church Attendance BOOM, New Study Says

As America marks one year of pandemic-related shutdowns this week, new research offers encouragement for pastors wondering whether in-person church attendance will eventually bounce back. Churches, along with almost every other sector of society, had to drastically alter their operations because of COVID-19. But as vaccination percentages increase and the virus threat decreases, worship services are likely to fill back to pre-pandemic numbers.

That’s a key takeaway from a recent Lifeway Research study of 1,000 Protestant churchgoers. When gathering in large groups is deemed safe again, 91% of respondents say they plan to worship in person as frequently as they did before March of 2020. Of those, 23% indicate they expect to attend services more than they did prior to the pandemic. By contrast, only six percent of churchgoers say they’ll attend less than before, and only one percent say they won’t return to in-person worship at all. Read more …

The Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center (BHERC) along with the capable hands of its NextGen members, with pride and great excitement, announces a Call For Entries for the inaugural BHERC “Lift Every Voice” (LEV) program. Considering the impact of the current climate of the world, and how it has proven to be debilitating, frustrating, resulting in tragedy for so many, this show provides a platform highlighting an area of artistry that is often overlooked.” stated Robert McCune, LEV Program Director. This program also allows BHERC LEV to call out across the globe in search of talented spoken word artists who are ready to let their words be heard. BHERC wants them to be seen and heard and all forms of prose are accepted. No one can tell these stories with more poetic agility, visual acuity, and agitated vocal percussion than spoken word artists, poets, and creative writers. They are the voice of the people. The voice of humanity!” elated Sandra J. Evers-Manly, President and Founder of BHERC. Each week Judges will mentor the contestants and go through their creative process, share a bit about the finalists and how they are handling the competition. Contestants will be expected to give testimonials, embrace competition contrary to their fellow writers, and try to gain as much exposure as possible.
