Former Texas Pastor Who Fatally Shot Himself After Killing His Wife and Young Son Drove to Texas State University and Tried to Strangle His Daughter

Richard Logan, a former pastor and CEO of faith-based anti-poverty nonprofit Attack Poverty who fatally shot himself after killing his wife and young son in the family home, also tried to strangle his daughter who survived, police revealed Thursday.

While authorities in Sugarland, Texas, are still investigating the motive for Richard Logan’s actions, the Fort Bend County Medical Examiner said Logan shot his wife, Diana, 48, multiple times and then shot their 11-year-old son, Aaron, once, KHOU reported.

He then drove to San Marcos where his daughter, Ambrielle, is in her final year at Texas State University and tried to strangle her before taking his own life, police said.

“Police believe Richard Logan shot and killed his wife and son in their home before driving to San Marcos in Guadalupe County, physically assaulting his adult daughter and committing suicide. The handgun recovered at the scene of the suicide is believed to be the same weapon that was used to kill Logan’s wife and son. Forensic testing results are pending,” Sugar Land Police said in a statement, noting that Logan’s daughter did not report the physical assault.

Authorities further told ABC News affiliate KTRK that Logan’s wife and son were killed sometime over the weekend of Feb. 8-9. The family’s pastor at River Pointe Church said he last saw them together on Saturday about 5 p.m. They believe Logan tried strangling Ambrielle on Monday evening and then sometime between that night and Tuesday around 8 a.m. he fatally shot himself.

According to news station KPRC, police officers went to the home of the 53-year-old CEO to perform a welfare check after law enforcement in Guadalupe County informed them that Logan’s body was found with what appeared to be a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound on the property of a company called TAS Environmental.

Police Chief Eric Robins said no one answered the door and when they eventually gained access to the home they found the bodies of Logan’s wife as well as their 11-year-old son.

Chuck Bentley on The Bible, Money, and What Love Means

Dear Chuck,

I’m growing weary of our society’s overuse (and misuse) of the word love. I hear and see it in advertising, on social media and in conversations. If the first and greatest commandment is to love the Lord our God, it appears we’ve confused our priorities. It appears we love money more than Him or His word.

Love is in the Air

Dear Love is in the Air,

Thank you for a great question. I chose to answer your question so I could talk about love and money on Valentine’s Day.

By the way, Americans will spend an estimated $50 billion dollars today on gifts and activities to show their love to a special loved one. My wife prefers that I save the money on chocolate or flowers on this day and show love throughout the year.

Love and Money

You have identified a significant problem. When love becomes misunderstood or misdirected, we all suffer.

Staggering debt levels, lack of savings, and rising stress suggest we have a spending problem and a heart problem. Even recently, experts have declared that when consumption turns into consumerism, it becomes a social disease.

The enemy has convinced people that things will bring happiness. Yet, throughout Scripture, God warns us not to be led astray. He tells us:

Just this week, the Wall Street Journal released information that hints at American’s disobedience and confused priorities. Credit card debt rose to record highs during the last quarter of 2019. Spurred by a seemingly strong economy and job market, spending increased dramatically. Unfortunately, the number of delinquent payments rose too. Consider this statistic sited in the article:

“Total credit card balances increased by $46 billion to $930 billion, well above the previous peak seen before the 2008 financial crisis, according to data released by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Tuesday.”

Debt brings stress and bondage. People are unable to live as God designed when they are strapped with debt. In today’s world that includes credit card debt, student loan debt, car loans, mortgages, personal and payday loans. It prevents many from saving money to be used as God directs. Bankrate’s recent poll shows only 41% of Americans could cover a $1,000 emergency with savings.

The Apostle Paul wrote: “You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.” (2 Corinthians 9:11 ESV)

There’s only one reason God supplies a surplus of wealth to a Christian: so that he or she will have enough to provide for the needs of others. True wealth comes with the responsibility of giving. God promises blessings to all who freely give and His curse on those who hoard, steal, covet, or idolize.

SBC Pastors Threaten to Boycott Conference over Planned Spoken Word Performance by Female Pastor

SBC Pastors Threaten to Boycott Conference over Planned Spoken Word Performance by Female Pastor

Some Southern Baptist church leaders and pastors are threatening to boycott the Southern Baptist Convention’s Pastors’ Conference because of a planned performance from a female spoken word artist.

According to The Christian Post, some of the church pastors say Hosanna Wong should not be in the lineup of featured guests at the conference because she is a female teaching pastor.

“The last thing I want to do is sow discord in the body of Christ. And I do not believe I’m doing so. I must, however, question @PastorDavidUth on @SBCPastorsConf including @waynecordeiro & Hosanna Wong. This does not represent the majority of the SBC. We will fight for right,” Sam Bunnell, pastor of worship and discipleship at South Reno Baptist in Nevada, said on Twitter.

Dwight McKissic, senior pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas, however, noted in a statement that Wong is not a lead pastor.

“If Phoebe could be entrusted to deliver the Roman epistle to the church at Rome, & the church be told to ‘receive her in the Lord…and assist her,’…

Vacationing in a glass igloo: Spectacular vacations and an even more amazing final destination

If you’re like most of us, one of the ways you get through the cold winter is by making plans for summer vacation. If you’re in the market for somewhere you’ve probably never been, this New York Times article is for you.

It tells us about the Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp
& Resort in Chiang Rai, Thailand, where you can stay the night in a
transparent bubble while elephants roam nearby.

Closer to home (for Americans), the Farm Sanctuary in
Watkins Glen, NY, offers you a tiny house and the chance to mingle with some of
the eight hundred farm animals rescued from abuse and mistreatment.

Or you might choose a treehouse in the South African bush,
where you will sleep in the canopy of the Amazon, high above the Rio Negro
river.

If you want even higher accommodations, consider Skylodge
Adventure Suites in Peru, where you will arrive either by hiking over 1,300
feet up or by zipping in on a zip line. Your room is a transparent capsule
hanging on the side of a mountain.

Underwater options exist as well, like The Manta Resort off the coast of Pemba near Zanzibar, where your butler will boat out to meet you on your private underwater island.

If you’re scuba certified, you can dive down for a stay at Jules’ Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, Florida.

An even more amazing final destination

Wherever you go this summer, know that the most spectacular
vistas on earth cannot begin to compare to what is awaiting you one day in your
eternal home.

Scripture describes heaven as a place beyond description:
“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart imagined, what God has
prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).

Knowing that your home with God is more astounding than your
finite mind can imagine may not help with the cold of February. But it does
encourage us to live for the place where we will live forever.

Whatever it costs us to be faithful to Jesus today will be
more than repaid by Jesus one…

Catholic Priest in Rhode Island Says Abortion is Worse Than Pedophilia Because It ‘Doesn’t Kill Anyone’

A Catholic bishop has responded to controversy surrounding a Rhode Island priest in his diocese who implied in a news interview that abortion is worse than pedophilia.

The Rev. Richard Bucci of Sacred Heart Church in West Warwick spoke with NBC affiliate WJAR after declaring in a letter published in a newspaper that lawmakers who support abortion would be denied communion, and he called them out by name.

The declaration also came in the form of a flier handed out to parishioners which stated that the lawmakers could not receive communion in “accord with the teaching of the Catholic Church for 2000 years.”

“In addition, they will not be allowed to act as witnesses to marriage, godparents, or lectors at weddings, funerals or any other church function,” added the flier, according to the Providence Journal.

In an interview with NBC affiliate WJAR about his actions, Bucci seemed to be responding to those who compare abortion and pedophilia when he said: “We are not talking about any other moral issue, where some may make it a comparison between pedophilia and abortion. Pedophilia doesn’t kill anyone and this does.”

Bucci also argued that the acceptance of abortion encourages other violence, adding that “once you say an innocent life isn’t worthy of living … then other life becomes meaningless.”

Bishop Thomas Tobin, head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, issued a statement on Thursday in response to the Bucci’s comments in the news interview.

Tobin began by stressing that “it is never acceptable to underestimate the harm caused by sexual abuse of minors.”

“Sexual abuse, wherever and whenever it occurs, causes long-lasting, sometimes permanent and devastating harm to the victims/survivors, their families and the entire community,” the bishop said.

Tobin went on to say that “abortion is also a sinful, immoral act” that “destroys innocent unborn life” and “exploits vulnerable women.”

Dr. James Dobson Rebukes Colorado Legislature for Banning Bill Protecting Babies who Survive Abortion

The Colorado House State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee rejected a proposed bill that would protect the lives of babies born alive after abortion.

Dr. James Dobson condemned the vote, rebuking legislators for refusing to protect the lives of “tiny survivors of ‘choice.’”

Read his full statement below:

This week, representatives in my home state of Colorado made a decision that a child’s life is expendable. Specifically, legislative committee members voted down a bill that would have required doctors to provide medical care for a baby born alive following an attempted abortion.

Make no mistake, this is not about “abortion access” or the “right to choose.” This is not about “bundles of cells” or “clumps of tissue.” This is not about “my body, my choice,” or any other despicable euphemism or excuse employed to minimize the horror of killing an unborn child in the womb.

This is about the tiny survivors of “choice.” This is about precious boys and girls, made in the image of God, who survive an attempt to end their lives. This is about whether medical professionals – who take an oath to bring healing and not harm—should be required to “exercise the same degree of professional skill, care and diligence to preserve the life and health” of a child born alive after an attempted abortion that they would for any other child. This is about leaving a helpless and wounded baby to die alone on a porcelain table.

Swarms of Locusts ‘as Big as Major Cities’ Raid Africa, Threatening Millions of Already-Vulnerable Lives

One of the world’s oldest and most destructive insects is wreaking havoc in Africa.

Hundreds of millions of locusts are eating their way through the continent, putting crops, food security and millions of lives at risk.

It’s almost like a page out of the Bible’s Old Testament book of Exodus. Authorities are calling it the worst outbreak in decades as billions of desert locusts swarm across a large part of East Africa.

“Today locust swarms are as big as major cities and this is getting worse by the day,” warned Antonio Guterres, secretary-general of the United Nations. “I ask the international community to respond with speed and generosity to ensure an effective response and control the infestation while we still have the chance.”

Experts say the average swarm can contain up to 150 million locusts, travel 100 miles in a single day and grow as large as 250 football fields.

“That swarm in one day can eat the same amount of food as the entire population of Kenya,” said Keith Cressman, an expert with UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). “That swarm in one day can eat the same amount of food as everybody here in the tri-state area—New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York.”

Randy Schroeder on Seven Cs to Keep a Marriage Healthy on Valentine’s Day and Every Day

The views expressed in this commentary do not necessarily reflect those of BCNN1. Opinions expressed are solely those of the author(s).

Two “Cs” that most people connect with Valentine’s Day are Candy and Cards. With love in the air, approximately $2 billion will be spent on candy and nearly $1 billion on cards in the hope of making your spouse or a significant other feel special.  However, after one week, the gifts of candy and cards are simply one day of romance and actual ongoing marital life becomes a reality.

Although candy and cards have their place, the Seven “Cs” are what keep a marital relationship healthy on a consistent basis.  The Seven “Cs” create satisfaction and bring about regular contentment and happiness. Think of the “Cs” in this article as daily vitamins for the successful well-being of your relationship both on Valentine’s Day and everyday.

1.  COMMUNICATION

Have a daily dialogue with good give-and-take communication. Ask two consecutive questions of each other to promote an exchange of information. Share the activities of your day and personal feelings about what went well. Give your spouse excellent focused attention which means wonderful eye contact and reflective listening, echoing what they share with you. Talking is sharing, but listening well is truly caring and that defines the heart of communication.

2.  COMPLIMENTS

In relationships, there is the sowing and reaping principle of “what we give, we usually receive.”  When a spouse sows compliments, they will usually reap compliments in return. Praise or a compliment also creates positive energy and a stronger connection between a husband and wife. The best way to compliment or praise is to give an “Appreciation Vitamin” with the words, “I appreciate . . . “ Please remember to always appreciate both internal qualities as well as external activities.  Never let a day go by without giving an “Appreciation Vitamin” to your partner.

3.  CARESSING

Consistent, meaningful touch is an essential component for a strong connection. Healthy couples practice small acts of touching on a daily basis. Scratch her back, lovingly squeeze his hand, give her quick kisses, rub his shoulders, stroke her hair, and frequently hold hands. A lack of initiating touch by both partners often leads to sexual intimacy struggles. On the positive side, view physical touch as the cement for your relationship.

4.  CLOSENESS

Create a close emotional bond by being a giver not a taker. God said the “two shall be one,” hence intently focus on strengthening your “Oneness” or closeness every single day. Two healthy partners do not ask “What am I getting out of this relationship?” but instead are asking, “What am I putting into this relationship?” in order to reinforce our closeness. Laughter is probably one of the top three ways to create closeness. Laughter is a powerful human emotion that diminishes stress and paves the wave for a more enjoyable relationship. So smile regularly and laugh with each other to enhance your cohesion.

Moody Bible Institute to Sell 10 Acres of Its Main Campus to High-rise Devloper in Chicago

Moody Bible Institute has entered into a preliminary agreement to sell off 10 acres north of the evangelical institution’s main campus in the Near North Side of Chicago to a prominent high-rise developer, according to The Chicago Tribune.

Citing real estate sources, the newspaper reports that the institution has entered an agreement with JDL Development in a deal that is expected to bring thousands of new apartments to the area. However, the deal hasn’t been finalized.

JDL Development was founded in 2003 and has gained a reputation as one of Chicago’s premier companies focused on developing high-rise luxury apartments, condominiums as well as single-family homes.

The price of the reported agreement or what Moody Bible Institute was asking for has not been disclosed. However, The Chicago Tribune reports that offers were expected to top $200 million since the available property is located so close to downtown Chicago.

Moody Bible Institute is a fully accredited Bible college with other campuses in Illinois, Washington state and Michigan. It was founded in 1886 by Dwight Moody. Since its founding, the institution’s main campus has been located in Chicago’s Near North Side neighborhood.

The sale of the 10 acres follows the 2017 closure of Moody Bible Institute’s Spokane, Washington, campus, a move made to preserve the institution’s financial standing at a time when many private higher education institutions are facing declining enrollment and financial difficulties.

At the time, Moody also cut faculty and staff at its Chicago campus and closed an extension campus in California. Moody also adjusted undergraduate and seminary programs for cost reduction. Moody still operates its missionary aviation school in Spokane.

How to Pray for the President, Other Civil Leaders

How to Pray for the President, Other Civil Leaders

Have you ever prayed for the president of the United States? That’s any president, not necessarily the current resident of the White House or any specific commander in chief.

And – a little closer to home – have you ever prayed for your state’s governor or your city’s mayor, police chief or the superintendent of your local schools?

These are just a few of the many civil officials who hold elected or appointed public office in our communities, states, regions and nation. Their significant responsibilities, influence, authority and resources touch your life and the lives of family members (and pets) living with you, your home and other property, maybe your workplace or business, church, and friends and neighbors.

And even though you have the power to vote and the means of voicing your concerns directly to public officials, the influence you have as an individual over civil authorities can seem limited. But there is one way anyone can powerfully influence people and circumstances.

According to the New Testament book of James, “… The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect” (James 5:16, Christian Standard Bible).

The Appeal to Pray for the President and Other Government Leaders

Not only is the Bible encouraging about the powerful impact prayer can have over our circumstances, scripture also specifically promotes prayer as an essential activity for supporting our civil…
