Christians mission trips to have safeguarding challenges looked into to ensure best practise

Since it was revealed that staff at Oxfam had hired prostitutes while in Haiti, other missions, charities and NGOs are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of having good safeguarding procedures.

However, Christian safeguarding charity Thirty:One Eight says more research is needed to enable a full understanding of the challenges faced by those in this field, to then ensure that best practise is carried out across the board.

In a questionnaire, Thirty:One Eight will be looking into what challenges those who go on mission trips face when trying to protect children and vulnerable adults and asks questions such as whether those going abroad are required to have a DBS check or not.

Thirty:One Eight, who assisted the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse in the Church of England and help churches with their safeguarding practise, will work with the University of Chester’s psychology department to launch an academic study into the challenges and training needs for organisations sending people abroad for mission.

Justin Humphreys, CEO of Thirty:One Eight, said: “We have a strong track record of conducting and commissioning research in the UK and overseas. In order to help with the development of best practice in safeguarding within the faith sector

“We are particularly excited about this study, which comes at a crucial time amidst growing scrutiny of…

Australia releases new religious freedom bill following Christian rugby star sacking

The former Wallabies star had his multi-million dollar contract terminated earlier this year, after posting “hell awaits” for “drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists, idolaters” on his Instagram account.

Ruby Australia dismissed Folau for being in breach of their Professional Players’ Code of Conduct.

According to the news organisation Reuters, the proposed legislation would allow Australians to express their faith outside of the workplace, as long as there is no financial damage towards their employer.

Following the release of a draft of the bill last Thursday, Australia’s Attorney General Christian Porter said: “Australia has a strong anti-discrimination framework with specific protections for people against discrimination on the basis of their age, sex, race and disability.”

He continued: “This draft bill released today extends those protections to provide protection for people against discrimination on the basis of their religion or religious belief, or lack thereof.”

The bill would see businesses with a turnover of more than $50m be unable to enforce limitations on a person’s religious expression in private, unless that company can prove it would cause “unjustifiable financial hardship to the business”.

A business would need to prove that a limitation on their freedom of speech was necessary to avoid this unjustifiable financial…

After Christians in Algeria Prevented Church Closure, Authorities Seal it Shut

After Christians in Algeria Prevented Church Closure, Authorities Seal it Shut

TIZI-OUZOU, Algeria, September 3, 2019 (Morning Star News) – After Christians fended off an attempt to close a church building in Algeria on Aug. 26, gendarmes arrived early Monday morning (Sept. 2) and sealed it shut, sources said.

Church leaders and their attorney had asserted that the order from the head of Bejaia Province to close the church in Ighzer Amokrane was illegal because it was not ordered by the proper governing body or a court, sources said.

Meeting with representatives of the legally recognized umbrella group of Protestant churches, the Protestant Church of Algeria (l’Église Protestante d’Algérie, or EPA) on Aug. 28, provincial authorities said they would consider the Christians’ arguments, advocacy group Middle East Concern (MEC) reported.

“No more was heard until the church was sealed on Sept. 2,” according to a MEC press statement.

Akbou gendarmerie forced the owner of the property to accompany them to the Prince of Peace church site in Ighzer Amokrane, 192 kilometers (119 miles) east of Algiers, at 6:45 a.m. in order to seal the building, church leader Idjouadiene Madjid told Morning Star News.

The gendarmerie chose that hour knowing that no one would prevent them from closing the building, Madjid said, adding that only afterward did church leaders and others discover the church door was sealed.

Both the Ighzer…

Catholic School Removes ‘Harry Potter’ Books: ‘Actual Curses and Spells’ Are in Them

Catholic School Removes ‘Harry Potter’ Books: ‘Actual Curses and Spells’ Are in Them

A Catholic school in Nashville, Tenn., has removed all seven books of the Harry Potter series from the library out of concern over their content.

The books were available in the old library of St. Edward Catholic School in Nashville, but were removed when the school’s new library opened, according to the Tennessean newspaper.

J. K. Rowling authored the books, which were turned into popular movies.

“These books present magic as both good and evil, which is not true, but in fact a clever deception. The curses and spells used in the books are actual curses and spells; which when read by a human being risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text,” the Rev. Dan Reehil, a pastor at the school, wrote in an email.

Reehil said in the email he contacted several exorcists, who recommended the books’ removal, according to the Tennessean.

Rebecca Hammel, the superintendent of schools for the Catholic Diocese of Nashville, told the newspaper that Reehil removed the books after being contacted by a parent.

“I know that in the process they were going through and kind of weeding out some of the content in hopes of sprucing it up and improving the circulation [for the new library],” Hammel said.

Parents, Hammel emphasized, are the primary teachers of children. St. Edward is a pre-K through eighth-grade…

Hurricane Dorian and the Hunkerdown Hideaway: Offering an ‘oblation’ to God

Waves caused by Hurricane Dorian crash over the jetty of the Jupiter inlet on Sept. 3, 2019.

Hurricane Dorian turned north overnight and is about one hundred miles off of Florida’s east coast this morning. At least seven people were killed in the Bahamas; dozens are still being rescued from floodwaters.

The Category 2 storm, with winds of 110 mph, is lashing central Florida’s east coast today. Flash floods and a life-threatening storm surge are expected. More than two million people in Florida, Georgia, and North and South Carolina have been warned to evacuate.

Not everyone is leaving, however. Employees of the Hunkerdown Hideaway in downtown Cocoa Beach, Florida, vow to remain open “till the police shut us down.” Some say that the expense of evacuating and the income they would miss make leaving almost impossible for them.

Their dilemma could be solved if they knew where (or if) the hurricane would strike land. It’s an astounding fact in our day of remarkable technological sophistication that such vital and practical information is unavailable to those who need it most.

How many people work for the National Weather Service?

Our problem is not that our best people aren’t doing their best. The National Weather Service employs 2,600 operational meteorologists and hydrologists; the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s 2019 budget exceeds $5 billion.

And yet, using the most advanced technology in history, our best meteorological scientists are still unable to predict the precise path of a hurricane. The consequences of this fact are staggering.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates government costs for hurricanes at $28 billion a year. Coastal shoreline counties generate 40 percent of America’s jobs and are responsible for 46 percent of our gross domestic product.

Clearly, our best experts are doing all they can. But their…

Vicar condemns funeral costs, says no one should be in debt ‘burying a loved one’

It suggests that the average cost of a funeral in Scotland is £3,537.

Research by Royal London revealed that the average cost of a burial is £3,993 and £3,081 for a cremation.

Charges vary in different parts of Scotland.

Rev Bryan Kerr, the Church of Scotland’s representative on the Scottish Working Group on Funeral Poverty, said: “We are concerned with the findings of this report which states that funeral poverty in the UK has increased by 12 percent with the average cost of a funeral in Scotland standing at £3,537.

“This is having a disproportionate impact on low income families – no one should be plunged into debt in order to bury or cremate a loved one. It can create huge stress and adversely affect one’s ability to grieve and move forward.

“The Church welcomes the imminent introduction of the Scottish Funeral Expense Assistance which will provide help towards burial and cremation costs for individuals on lower incomes.”

The report states that approximately 40 percent more people will be eligible for this payment than were for the Department of Work and Pensions funeral payment.

Rev Kerr said: “Whilst this is good news, people on low incomes will still have a significant shortfall to address. We continue to call on the Scottish Government to ensure that all families have the ability to say goodbye to their loved one without being burdened with debt.

The…

Alabama Judge Throws Out ‘Baby Roe’ Case Filed by Father of Aborted Baby

Alabama Judge Throws Out ‘Baby Roe’ Case Filed by Father of Aborted Baby

A circuit judge has thrown out the case of an Alabama man who filed a wrongful death suit on behalf of his aborted baby.

Ryan Magers sued an Alabama clinic where his then 16-year-old girlfriend obtained the abortion pill, arguing that the recent change in state legislation means that the fetus should have been granted greater protections.

“I’m here for the men who actually want to have their baby,” Magers told WAAY 31 earlier this year. “It was just like my whole world fell apart,” he added.

But in his recent ruling, Madison County Circuit Judge Chris Comer completely disagreed, noting that the clinic issued the abortion medication prior to the “personhood” statute being brought in towards the end of last year.

In November 2018, the new bill “Amendment 2” came into force, prohibiting all abortions in the state, with exceptions made in cases that present a serious health risk to the woman.

The baby in the Magers case, however, was aborted back in 2017. As such, the judge highlighted that legislative changes cannot be enforced retrospectively.

“…the Court finds that Plaintiff’s asserted claims for punitive money damages are not cognizable under Alabama law, including the Alabama Wrongful Death Act,” Comer wrote in his ruling, according to AL.com.

The case gained national attention earlier this year after Madison County Probate Judge Frank…

Prayers requested for Iranian Christian imprisoned for not renouncing her faith

Fatemeh Bakhteri was initially handed a one-year sentence in September 2018 for “propaganda against the regime” together with a two year ban on social activities involving more than two people.

At the same ruling fellow Christian, Saheb Fadaie was sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment and two years’ exile in Hamedan – in the north west of Iran for “action against national security through collusion and gathering.”

At an appeal hearing on 15th January the pair were pressured by presiding judges Hassan Babaei and Mashallah Ahmadzadeh to renounce their faith.

After the pair refused to do so an appeal court ruled to uphold the sentences in a decision announced in May.

According to religious freedom charity Middle Eastern Concern (MEC), Fatemeh presented herself to officials at Evin Prison in Tehran to begin her sentence on 31st August.

MEC are encouraging Christians to join them in praying for Fatemeh.

Friends of Fatemeh report that she was not afraid as she went to prison on Saturday, but request prayer for her that the Lord would strengthen and encourage herself and her family, fellow Christian Saheb and all other Christian prisoners serving sentences in Evin Prison. Fatemeh also asked that Christians pray for the Iranian authorities to cease religious persecution and respect the law of freedom of religion.

Former conversion therapy minister comes out as gay and apologises to LGBTQ community

McKrae Game lead Hope for Wholeness – a Christian organisation that counsels homosexuals seeking to change their sexual orientation – for 20 years before being fired from the organisation in 2017.

In June this year Game came out as gay and publicly severed ties with the ministry.

In an interview with the South Carolina newspaper Post and Courier last week, Game condemned the practice saying: “I believe ex-gay ministry is a lie. Conversion therapy is not just a lie, it’s very harmful,”
“It’s false advertising,” he added.

According to a 2018 study by UCLA’s Williams Institute, nearly 700,000 LGBTQ+ people have undergone conversion therapy treatments or counselling across the U.S.

Game took to social media last week to express his regret for his previous work and ask for forgiveness from the gay community.

His Facebook post said: “20yrs in exgay ministry, I WAS WRONG! Please forgive me!

He went on to say that telling people “they were going to Hell if they didn’t stop [practising homosexuality]” was amongst his “worst wrongful acts.”

Premier has contacted Hope for Wholeness for comment.
