The Faith of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas

The Faith of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas

When I first received the invitation to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the law building at Mercer University, I did not anticipate that I would end up writing a story on Clarence Thomas. In fact, I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but after hearing Supreme Court Justice Thomas speak, I felt compelled to share his story.

Mercer University is a liberal arts college located in Macon, Ga.  Recently, they built a law building and invited Thomas to speak at its opening.

Thomas, who was born in rural Georgia, appeared to feel right at home at Mercer University. The crowd he was speaking to was mixed with familiar faces and fellow lawyers.

In his speech, Thomas made it clear that not only does he love the law, but he also values his faith and people. Thomas specifically emphasized that his success was made possible only through the support of others; mainly his mother. According to Thomas, his mother still works every day even though she is in her 90s.

Thomas – who has recently spoken out against abortion – clearly explained that he was concerned about the lack of unity and civility in our current culture. Thomas even exhorted the audience to engage with people that you may not agree with and to engage intelligently.

Although Judge Thomas’ speech was electrifying and to the point, it is what happens afterward that struck me. After the speech, I stayed in…

Christians Are Conflicted on Whether They Need Other Believers to Develop Their Faith, Survey Finds

Christians Are Conflicted on Whether They Need Other Believers to Develop Their Faith, Survey Finds

A LifeWay Research survey revealed conflicting views on whether Christians believe they need community for their faith.

According to the study from the Center for Church Revitalization at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 65 percent of respondents who attend Protestant or non-denominational churches at least once a month said they can have a relationship with God without other believers, CBN News reports. However, the survey also found that 75 percent said they need other believers for their faith.

“I believe this is primarily a discipleship issue,” said the Center’s Kenneth Priest, adding that there is a “spiritual apathy” in the church because of a “lack of pastors and spiritual leaders equipped to effectively preach and teach a text-driven life application of God’s Word.”

“The needing, yet not needing’ responses demonstrate an internal turmoil of individuals desiring community, but not seeing the church as the place to have those needs met,” Priest added.

Scott McConnell, of LifeWay Research, believes that Christians do need each other.

“Americans don’t like to admit they can’t do things themselves,” he said. “That is true of Christians as well. The biblical metaphor of the body illustrates that believers should both value and depend on each other.

“Solo Christianity is an inward desire to seek after…

Pennsylvania Court Rules that Seal with Cross Can Stay

Pennsylvania Court Rules that Seal with Cross Can Stay

Attorneys representing a Pennsylvania County have argued that the local authority should be allowed to keep displaying a cross symbol as part of its official seal, due to it being a representation of history rather than religion.

According to the Associated Press, last year, lawyers urged the panel of the 3rd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals to reverse a previous decision made by a lower federal judge who ruled that the county remove the fixture. Yesterday, the federal appellate court agreed with county lawyers, rejecting a claim from an atheist lobby group which asserted that the cross symbol should be censored from the official seal.

The original complaint was filed by the notorious Freedom From Religion Foundation, which argued that the displaying of a cross signified an endorsement of Christianity and thus violated the constitutional guidelines regarding the separation of church and state.

In September 2017, Judge Edward Smith agreed, noting that he was bound by legal precedent, to side with the Wisconsin-based atheist group, even though he did not believe the symbol violated the Constitution.

According to Becket Law, the religious liberty law firm representing the county, the seal has “been in use for over 70 years without any complaints.” Becket Law also explained the significant history behind the cross symbol, noting that it represents “the county’s early German…

Helter skelter in Norwich Cathedral accused of ‘making mockery of God’

Rochester Cathedral in Kent opened its nine-hole crazy golf course to the public last month and Peterborough Cathedral is having a gin and prosecco festival – all as part of a bid to continue the success of Cathedral attendance in England, with their numbers growing in comparison to parish churches.

However, Norwich Cathedral has received accusations of being ‘preoccupied with the demands of society’ by building a 55ft helter skelter next to their impressive stained glass window.

Rt Dr Gavin Ashenden, former Chaplain to the Queen, told The Telegraph: “There’s a sliding scale between mockery and blasphemy. It’s a mockery because it’s treating God like a tourist attraction, instead of as the creator of the universe who is going to hold us accountable for our ethical failures.

“It becomes blasphemy at the point where the cathedrals represent a long line of belief – much of which is martyred belief – people have paid with their lives to believe in Christ and a cathedral is the corporeal embodiment of Christ.”

Canon librarian at Norwich Cathedral, Doctor Peter Doll told Premier before it was open: “Over the centuries they (cathedrals) have always rebuilt and adapted and use different means to reach out to new audiences so that they remain relevant to the life of the world around them.

“We’re not doing it just as a gimmick to get people into the cathedral. We want to…

Department of Education Will Investigate State Rule Requiring Biological Girls to Compete against Transgender Girls in Athletics

Department of Education Will Investigate State Rule Requiring Biological Girls to Compete against Transgender Girls in Athletics

The federal government has announced it will be investigating claims by three teenage athletes that their state’s policy on transgender competitors is unfair.

The US Department of Education Office for Civil Rights has announced that it will be opening up an investigation after a Title IX complaint was filed which asserted that the state’s governing body is violating federal law by allowing biological boys to compete, and win, in girls-only events.

Immediately after the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference introduced a policy allowing biological males to compete in female-only events, several athletes complained that the rules were plainly unfair.

However, despite the majority of people understanding that the new policy put female athletes at a distinct disadvantage, Selina Soule, the chief instigator of the complaint, said that too many were afraid to speak out, fearing fierce backlash.

“Everyone is afraid of retaliation from the media, from kids around their school, from other athletes, coaches, school administrators,” Soule, a junior athlete at Glastonbury High School, told The Daily Signal.

Now, having been granted a federal investigation, the three girls who called out the discriminatory policy have a real chance of getting it reversed.

“Female athletes deserve to compete on a…

Rev calls to remove compulsory worship from UK schools

Rev Steven Terry, Chair of the Accord Coalition for Inclusive Education – an organisation that campaigns against religious discrimination in schools says that worship assemblies exclude others.

Speaking to Premier, Rev Steve said the law needs to be reconsidered: “quite simply, it’s out of date with the situation that we have in modern society. The original legislation, of course, dates right back to the Butler act of 1944, which means its 75 years old.

He argues: “the world has changed greatly in the last 75 years. And anything that happens in school needs to take account of the society that we’re currently operating in.”

Most Britons agree, according to a new survey that suggests the majority of people consider compulsory school worship as “inappropriate”.

A YouGov poll by Humanists UK found 50 per cent of people opposed the current legal obligation of a daily act of Christian worship.

The study also found that 72 percent of those surveyed want things like the environment and pupils’ achievements to be talked about in assemblies instead.

Rev Steven says that the current law is unfair and not reflective of the diverse worldviews of modern Britain: “We live in an extremely diverse society, where all sorts of different views, both religious and non-religious, have been very much talked about and lived. And we feel that it is unfair, that any one particular religious…

ELCA Declares Self a ‘Sanctuary Church Body,’ Marches to ICE Building in Milwaukee

ELCA Declares Self a ‘Sanctuary Church Body,’ Marches to ICE Building in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (RNS) — More than 500 years ago, a monk named Martin Luther nailed 95 theses outlining his grievances with the Roman Catholic Church to the door of a church in Wittenberg, Germany.

On Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 7), members of the mainline Protestant denomination bearing Luther’s name taped 9.5 theses — expressing their concern for immigrants and refugees — to the door of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in Milwaukee.

The action was part of a prayer vigil for migrant children and their families during the ELCA Churchwide Assembly this week at Milwaukee’s Wisconsin Center.

It took place on the same day the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America declared itself a “sanctuary church body,” signaling its support for immigrants.

Both came in response to President Trump’s policies at the United States border with Mexico and his pledge to deport millions.

“It just keeps getting worse and worse in terms of unaccompanied children, separated families, detention centers that are just horrific, and so what we wanted to say as a church body, as the Lutheran church, we wanted to now act with our feet and take action,” said Evelyn Soto Straw, director of unit operations and programs for the ELCA’s Domestic Mission.

More than 570 voting members of the churchwide assembly signed up to participate in the prayer vigil…
