Christian charity plans prayer protest in response to climate change report

The two week protest planned for 7th October, will involve a ‘faith bridge’ – where 24/7 prayer would be taking place together with non-violent direct action in central London.

Information released on Thursday by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – the world body for assessing the state of climate change, highlighted the potential dangers of the climate crisis to human life, if more was not done to stem its effects.

The study claims that 70-percent of the world’s ice-free land is affected by human activity.

While our food system alone creates a third of greenhouse gas emissions, the IPCC has warned that we need to improve the way forests are managed and food is grown to reduce pressure on land and resources.

CCA, the Christian wing of Extinction Rebellion is calling for immediate action to protect future generations.

CCA member Holly-Anna Petersen said: “Every report which comes out from the IPCC paints an increasingly bleak picture of the state of the world around us.

“Young people are pleading for us to act, because it is their futures which are at stake.

“A justice issue is already happening across our very dinner tables. Every minute that we do not take action, is a minute that we put our own desires above the needs of children.”

The United Nations’ latest study follows a warning last year, that “unprecedented” action must be taken to cut carbon emissions to zero by 2050.

Supreme Court to Decide if Christian Funeral Home Must Recognize Employee’s Transgender Identity

Supreme Court to Decide if Christian Funeral Home Must Recognize Employee’s Transgender Identity

The United States Supreme Court has agreed to look at a case which involves a Christian funeral home and its refusal to recognize an employee’s gender transition.

Given the weight of the issues considered in the case, many believe it could be a precedent-setting moment with regards to the future rights of faith-based businesses and their interactions with progressive gender norms.

A lower court had previously ordered the Michigan-based funeral service to allow its employee to dress and present themselves as a woman while at work. The business, which states its mission is to “honor God in all that we do,” argued that, due to the sensitive nature of its work, employees must maintain a high level of professionalism – as such, the business enforced a sex-specific dress code.

The issue likely to be at the center of the Supreme Court’s deliberations will be whether or not a 1964 federal Civil Rights law, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race and religion, can apply to gender identity as well.

“While the issue that the Supreme Court took up is a narrow one, whether civil rights protections against ‘sex’ discrimination passed in 1964 should include ‘gender identity’ and transgender rights, it will have vast implications for religious groups,” said Craig Parshall, General Counsel for the National Religious…

Choristers and canons get first rides on cathedral helter skelter

Reverend Canon Andy Bryant, of Norwich Cathedral, said the idea came to him when he was visiting the Sistine Chapel in Rome.

“I had the slightly risky thought of ‘I know this is amazing, but actually the ceiling at Norwich Cathedral is every bit as wonderful’,” he said.

“We have one of the greatest collections of medieval roof bosses anywhere in northern Europe.

“The trouble is they are so high up that most people never get a chance to really appreciate them.

“And so was born the idea, could we get people up higher to these roof bosses and so appreciate that they are exquisite art as they are the most beautiful pieces of stone carving but also the story that’s captured within them which is the story of the Bible.”

The funfair ride has a viewing platform at 40ft, allowing riders nearer to the cathedral’s 69ft-high roof.

Roof bosses are seen at points where the ribs of the cathedral roof join.

They date back to the mid 15th century when a new roof was built following a fire.

Rev Bryant said there was a “serious intent” behind the project, called Seeing It Differently, and he hoped it would attract more visitors.

“We all are always looking to broaden the appeal of our cathedrals because some people can feel that cathedrals are slightly exclusive, they’re for a particular type of person,” said Rev Bryant.

“We want…

When churches are looking to revitalize, a name change is often on the table. Today, we discuss whether or not you should change the name of a church as part of a revitalization.

Episode Highlights:

  • Most churches have no reputation in their community—which is not good.
  • If your church is scandal-ridden and all your Google results are about the scandals, then it might be best to change the name of the church.
  • When churches named after their community change their name, it can be seen by those in the area as abandoning the community.
  • Changing the name of a church is NOT a silver bullet for growth but too many churches act like it’s supposed to be.

The five perspectives we discuss are:

  1. Yes. The current name of the church has a terrible reputation.
  2. No. You should reclaim the name and redeem its purpose and presence in the community.
  3. Yes. The name is confusing.
  4. No. A name change acts like a silver bullet and minimizes the important factors.
  5. Yes. The name reflects an incorrect address.

37 Best Gifts for Pastors

Are you searching for a gift for your pastor? Pastor Appreciation Month may have passed but with Christmas coming up soon, here are 37 suggestions that would make great gifts for pastors.

1. A notebook

(Photo: Dayspring.com)

Notebooks are great for jotting down ideas for sermons, journaling or reflecting on Scripture. You can choose a leather journal with a cross (pictured above), a journaling Bible that allows notes to be written next to the scriptures, a simple journal with numbered pages and a table of contents, a refillable one that’s embossed with a Bible verse, or a personalized notebook.

2. Books

Pastors read — a lot. You can simply ask your pastor what books are on his or her wish list or offer a gift card to a bookstore.

Here are some new and upcoming releases: The Luckiest Man: How a Seventeen-Year Battle with ALS Led Me to Intimacy with God by John R. Paine, Radical Wisdom: A Daily Journey for Leaders by Regi Campbell, Always in God’s Hands: Day by Day in the Company of Jonathan Edwards by Owen Strachan, and Everything to Lose: Doing the Right Thing When the Stakes Are High by Steve Carter.

3. Subscription to audio book service

When pastors are driving, traveling, or exercising, listening to audiobooks could be a better option for them. You can purchase a subscription to an audiobook service, including audible.com or christianaudio.com.

4. Music streaming service

A subscription to a music streaming service would also make a great gift for pastors who like to be inspired by, relax with or even dance to music. Services include Apple Music, Spotify,…

Are ‘thoughts and prayers’ a ‘cruel joke’?

Dana Milbank is a columnist for the Washington Post and a bestselling author. He has also been characterized as “extravagantly contrarian” and “one of the most extreme ideologues in the business.”

Consider, for example, the title of his column following last weekend’s shootings: “Republicans’ thoughts and prayers have become a cruel joke.” Milbank cites dozens of such statements responding to the tragedies. He notes that “thoughts and prayers are always welcome,” but then claims that this “reflexive response to the endless massacres has become a cruel joke, as effective as a Hallmark sympathy card.”

Milbank believes that offering prayer is “what people say when they plan to do nothing.” To those who criticize his criticism, he responds: “We criticize prayer in lieu of action.”

I agree with Milbank that if we promise to pray but do nothing else, we have not done enough. As James notes, “Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (James 2:17).

However, like so many in our secular culture, Milbank seems to think that we must choose between “prayer” and “action,” that if we pray for victims, we are not acting on their behalf. And he believes that until Republicans act as he thinks they should, “We don’t have a prayer.”

“Our community came together through prayer”

Last Sunday morning, as the horrific news was still breaking from El Paso and Dayton, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott was on CBS’s Face the Nation. He was asked about the massacre four years ago when a white racist murdered nine African Americans at the Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston.

Sen. Scott began his response to the weekend shootings: “What a challenging time. Our prayers and thoughts are certainly with both communities.” After describing the tragedy that happened in his state, he then declared: “The good news for our community was that our community came together through prayer.”

Here’s why I’m quoting from his interview today: the senator…

Church accused of making an ‘unholy racket’

Music from the Christ Apostolic Church in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent’s monthly late night worship meetings start at 11pm and reportedly go on until the early hours of the morning.

On Friday 2nd August worship continued until around 4am the following morning. Frustrated locals went to the church in the middle of the night in their pyjamas to confront the parishioners about the ‘unacceptable’ noise levels but said their pleas fell on deaf ears.

One resident said: “It woke up half of Hamil Road and could be heard at Stanfield. A lot of people couldn’t get back to sleep, especially the elderly.

“A couple of people, including myself, went over to ask if they could please lower the music and close the door and the reply was ‘no, we have a licence so we will carry on.

“The last person to leave the building was at 6.25am on Saturday. I have no problem with religion but there is a time and place to worship. I’m sure God would not want us to go without sleep.”

Councillor Lesley Adams said: “I have listened to concerns and agreed this was unacceptable in a residential area.”

Pastor Amos Nuga said he was aware of complaints and would cooperate with the council.
