Over 1000 bishops and spouses signed up for Lambeth Conference 2020

The Archbishop of Canterbury, who hosts the event around every 10 years, has invited participants across 40 Anglican Communion provinces and five Extra Provincial areas.

The aim of the 11 day event is to meet other Anglican leaders from around the world and discuss important matters for the wider communion and shape the Church’s priorities for the next decade.

However, in recent years a rival conference has started called GAFCON for members of the Anglican communion who feel the Conference is departing from the Bible in some areas.

The Archbishop of Cape Town, Dr Thabo Makgoba, who is also on the planning team, urged clergy this week not to boycott the Lambeth conference but to “come round the table”.

The team organising the Lambeth Conference announced this week that registrations included 566 bishops and 435 spouses.

Phil George, the CEO of the Lambeth Conference Company said: “At its heart, the hope for the Lambeth Conference 2020 is to have the full voice, diversity and experience of our global family represented.

“We are delighted that so many of our international guests have already confirmed their attendance at this historic event and we look forward to welcoming more registrations in the weeks and months ahead.”

It will be held in Canterbury, with much at the University of Kent, from the 23rd July to 2nd August 2020.

Three Sources of Joy in Preaching Weekly — Trevin Wax

A few months ago—for reasons pertaining to my family, my work, and my writing—I sensed it was time to bring this season of weekly preaching to a close, and so I stepped aside. On my last Sunday as teaching pastor, the church gave me a leather-bound book filled with handwritten letters of appreciation from members of the congregation. The most meaningful letters mentioned specific sermons that intersected with crucial life moments. Again and again, I was amazed at the power of God’s Word to give us the medicine we need at the moment we need it! As I reflect on the great honor I had to serve as the primary preacher in our church, I keep coming back to three main sources of joy.

The 7 Most Dangerous Words in Evangelism — Facts & Trends

I’m eternally grateful for every person who shared the gospel with me growing up and believe the people who used this seven-word call-to-action with me did so with good intentions. But while the phrase, “Now, all you have to do is…” aims to highlight the vital truth that redemption is complete in Christ, I believe it actually serves as an unhelpful—and, at times, even dangerous—Christian catchphrase.

When a Secular Job Looks Inviting to a Pastor — Chuck Lawless

It happens. Church leaders get exasperated with church people, and they begin to long to do something else – something outside the church world, in fact, where they’re no longer under somebody else’s magnifying…

School Removes 92-Year-Old Ten Commandments Plaque after Atheists Complain

School Removes 92-Year-Old Ten Commandments Plaque after Atheists Complain

An Ohio middle school has removed a 1920s-era Ten Commandments plaque following complaints from an atheist organization.

The plaque at Welty Middle School in New Philadelphia, Ohio, was a gift from the Class of 1926 to the school district in 1972 and had been on display for 92 years until the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation got involved. The organization, in an April letter to the district, called the plaque a “fragrant violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.”

“The district’s promotion of the Judeo-Christian bible and religion over nonreligion impermissibly turns any non-Christian or non-believing student into an outsider,” the letter said. “Schoolchildren already feel significant pressure to conform to their peers. They must not be subjected to similar pressure from their schools, especially on religious questions.”

Brian J. DeSantis, an attorney representing the school district, said in a June 19 email the plaque had been removed. But that doesn’t mean the district agrees with the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

“With over 90 years on display, the plaque is recognized as part of the tradition and history of New Philadelphia City Schools,” New Philadelphia Schools Superintendent David…

How to make Spiced Eggs

One of my very earliest and favorite recipes since starting this blog…! This egg dish is popularly called …. Eggs!!!

Well sorry, no “devil” eggs in here, we are Christians! (hehehe..) What we have instead are delicious, delicately Spiced Eggs. These eggs are so delicious and easy to make but are usually in the obscured memories of the typical Nigerian chef. I have found that they are one of the simplest and hassle free canapés to make and they score very high with guests every-time! Try  Recipe here.

The border crisis and a viral photo: Biblical responses to the needs of children

Rosa Ramirez, mother of Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez

It is a photo that breaks your heart.

Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez died with his twenty-three-month-old daughter, Valeria, as they tried to cross from Mexico to the US. The New York Times describes them: “The father and daughter lie face down in the muddy water along the banks of the Rio Grande, her tiny head tucked inside his T-shirt, an arm draped over his neck.”

Their family had reportedly fled from oppressive poverty in El Salvador and had been waiting for two months in a migrant camp in Matamoros for an appointment to receive political asylum in the US. According to Óscar’s wife, Tania, the family decided to cross the Rio Grande out of desperation.

According to the journalist who later took their picture, Óscar crossed the Rio Grande with his daughter, then turned to get his wife. Valeria saw him swimming away and jumped after him. He clung to her, but a strong current drowned them.

Explaining the border crisis

The border crisis continues to dominate the news today.

The House passed a $4.5 billion emergency border aid package this week, mostly along party lines. However, Republicans argued that it contains inadequate funding and too many restrictions on the power of immigration agencies. The Senate then adopted a $4.5 billion bipartisan aid package yesterday after voting down the House version.

Given the political divisiveness and vitriol associated with the border crisis, I looked for a respected authority whose reporting on this issue can be trusted as objective and biblical. And so, I turned to the Evangelical Immigration Table (EIT), headed by the president of the National Association of Evangelicals and the president of World Vision US, among others. It is supported by prominent pastors including Matt Chandler, Tony Evans, Jack Graham, Max Lucado, and Southern Baptist Convention…

‘What is happening to ensure we do not get to this stage?’

Police said the victim, believed to have been 18, was found with a stab injury in Uxbridge Road, Shepherd’s Bush, on Wednesday night.

Scotland Yard said a murder investigation has been launched and officers are looking into the circumstances of the incident, where exactly it took place and who was involved.

Local resident Derek Parks, 64, said the teenager went to a shop and was looking for cover after an incident in the street.

He said: “The fighting happened outside the shop doorway and the gentleman came in from outside. He came into the shop for cover.

“The other guy came into the shop with the knife and stabbed him.

“The guy who got stabbed went towards the basement of the shop and was hiding.”

The knifeman ran and there was “a trail of blood” at the scene, according to Mr Parks, who has lived in the area for 40 years.

He said: “There is going to be a lot more stabbing on the streets if the Government does not take serious action. It is also down to the parents to keep a check on the children.

“Life is a precious thing which we should all treasure. All life matters.”

Shopkeeper Sully Singh said there was a police cordon in place by the time he got to the store at around 9.45pm on Wednesday after a call from his night staff.

He said: “I got a telephone call from the guys and when I came here everyone was shocked. They…

A church’s attitude toward membership can hurt revitalization. Today, we expand on seven reasons why.

Episode Highlights:

  • “I give therefore I get” is the essence of the entitlement mentality in the church.
  • High expectation churches are highly functioning churches.
  • When you’re focused on doing things that actually matter, you don’t have time for things that don’t matter.
  • If you have an unhealthy view of church membership—one that’s inwardly focused—your church will likely neglect its community.

The seven reasons we discuss are:

  1. It creates an entitlement mentality.
  2. It lowers expectations.
  3. It is a distraction from the mission.
  4. It causes neglect of the community.
  5. It creates frustration and discouragement among the pastor and other leaders.
  6. It neglects evangelism.
  7. It hurts unity.
