106 People Indicted by Anti-Terror Court for Burning Alive Christian Couple in Pakistan

Christian Post Report – Christian couple Sheathed, 35, (R) and Shamah Masih (L), 31, were killed for allegedly desecrating the Quran in Pakistan, November 2014.

An Anti-Terrorism Court in Pakistan convicted on Thursday 106 suspects believed to have taken part in the lynching of a Christian couple in November 2014. Shama and Shahzad Masih were beaten and burned to death by a Muslim mob, who accused the Christians of burning a copy of the Quran.

Pakistan’s Daily Times reported that the 106 suspects were indicted following a police report submitted against them in Lahore.

“The challan (charge-sheet) states that Maulvi Muhammad Hussain, Maulvi Arshad Baloch and Maulvi Noorul Hassan were involved in persistent provocative speeches against the couple which led to the assembly of 400 people as a mob who then burned Shama and Shahzad alive,” the article stated.

“After the challan was presented at the hearing, the court also held Yousaf Gujjar, the owner of the brick kiln where the couple was beaten to death, responsible.”

The couple were beaten to death and burned in the brick kiln where they worked in the town of Kot Radha Kishan. The Pakistani government often punishes Christians and other religious minorities in blasphemy cases, but has looked to crack down on mobs taking justice in their own hands.

The accusations against the couple stemmed from burned pages of the Quran found in their trash. The Christians were locked up in an adjacent room to the brick kiln by Gujjar, who had reportedly been angry with them for failing to pay him the money they owed, and sought to accuse them of blasphemy.

Local clerics have also been accused of making incendiary announcements and urging Muslims to gather, which sparked hundreds of people to head for the couple’s home. Witnesses said that some in the crowd broke down the door and dragged the couple out, after which they tortured and burned the Christians at the kiln.

International Christian Concern Regional Manager Todd Daniels said at the time: “The brutal killing of Shahzad and Shama once again highlights the extreme danger of religious fanaticism that Christians in Pakistan face on a regular basis. The accusation of blasphemy can be used for any dispute and can often prove deadly as it did today, inciting a mob to brutally murder this young couple.”

Earlier this year a legal battle began for the custody of the couple’s three young children, who were taken in by their maternal grandfather after their parents were killed.

Governor of Bethlehem Cancels Christian Event Scheduled for West Bank Site Due to ‘Significant Political and Religious Pressure’

Christian Post Report – Co-chair of the Empowered21 global Spirit-empowered movement William Wilson, who is also president of Oral Roberts University asks spirited-filled Christians to pray Thursday night at the Jerusalem Pais Arena after revealing that Palestinian authorities had canceled one of the group’s planned events in Bethlehem in the West Bank.

JERUSALEM — An outdoor Christian worship event set to be hosted by the Empowered21 Global Congress in Manger Square, Bethlehem on Friday was abruptly cancelled by the Palestinian Authority governor of Bethlehem, Abdel Fattah Hamayel, due to “significant political and religious pressure.”

The event, which was supposed to be a time of praise, prayer and preaching focused on the coming of Jesus in Bethlehem, which now forms a part of the West Bank, was initially greenlit by the office of Bethlehem Mayor Vera George Mousa Baboun, according to co-chair of the Empowered21 global Spirit-empowered movement, William Wilson, who is also president of Oral Roberts University.

“We received an official letter from the mayor of Bethlehem’s office confirming our event in Manger Square for tomorrow night guaranteeing both space and security. We planned our schedule for this week to honor Shabbat in Israel while at the same time seeking to share God’s love with the Palestinian people into tomorrow night’s event,” explained Wilson in his run-up before breaking the news to thousands of attendees at the Empowered21 Congress at the Jerusalem Pais Arena on Thursday night.

“Due to significant political and religious pressure, the governor of the Bethlehem area decided today to cancel tomorrow night’s event just as our staging was going up in Manger Square,” he continued.

“I spent the afternoon in Manger Square trying to find a way to further support our Christian brothers in there, including considering the possibility of other alternative venues. Saturday morning we will have an outreach in the Bethlehem area to minister to hurting families. None of the venues available to us tonight were sufficient for our needs. This cancellation surprised us. It’s beyond our control but it’s not beyond God’s control and we trust him fully in all of this,” Wilson added before asking the conference participants to pray.

He further revealed that just last week, the group which is pushing for every person on Earth to have an authentic encounter with Jesus Christ through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit by Pentecost 2033, faced similar opposition from the government of Jordan.

“Last week we had a similar circumstance in Jordan. Where the Jordanian government refused to give us a permit to hold our Middle East, North African celebration of the Holy Spirit in a public venue. We moved the event to a church facility and after all was said and done we had over 1,000 people from 15 nations involved and God’s spirit visited us mightily,” he said. “I believe God is gonna use this moment to just fill us and fill us again here in Jerusalem.”

During a press conference before the opening session of the Empowered21 Congress, movement co-chair George O. Wood, who is also general superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church (USA) and chairman of the World AG Fellowship, declared: “We’re a non-political movement and we love all people. And that’s why we are here to express the love of Jesus to everyone.”

In discussing the group’s general position on Israel, he said: “We choose not to take a political position, rather our focus is on Jesus and his love for all people (no matter their) gender or the color of their skin or language.”

In discussing the group’s theological view on Israel, Wilson said: “There is diversity of thought in the movement. But I think you would find unity across the movement.”

Wood further explained the relationship the Empowered21 group has with not just Israel but other groups in the area without being explicit.

“There is a connection with the Jewish people because it is from the Jewish people that the Gospel of Christ emerged. The New Testament emerged out of a Judaic context so there is also a heart connection. But there is also a heart connection to people who are living in this land, and all lands, who are made in the image of God and created after His likeness and for whom Jesus Christ came to live his life and die on the cross for the sins of all people and rose again on the third day,” he said.

“That’s the message that we deeply believe and hold to. Therefore we know that the Lord loves everyone, regardless of their background or ethnicity,” he added.

Bethlehem, according to Sacred Destinations, is recognized as the childhood home of the biblical King David. It is also popularly known as the birthplace of Jesus Christ and has been a major site of Christian pilgrimage since the construction of the Church of the Nativity in the fourth century A.D. Since 1995, Bethlehem has been under the control of the Palestinian National Authority.

‘A.D. The Bible Continues’ Is Making a Difference in Hollywood, Says ‘American Idol’ Contestant Colton Dixon

    Colton Dixon

Former “American Idol” contestant Colton Dixon says “A.D. The Bible Continues” is changing how Hollywood sees Christianity. The singer is expected to appear on the companion series “Beyond A.D.” on Sunday as the eighth episode of the series airs on NBC.

Dixon, who rose to fame and stayed true to his Christian values on the 11th season of “American Idol,” offered insight on the television industry’s attitude toward faith before heaping praise on “A.D. The Bible Continues” creators Roma Downey and Mark Burnett.

I just know, [I got] even just a little taste of how Hollywood works, of what its motivation is, and I’m just so, so proud of Mark and Roma for kind of going against that,” said the “Love Has Come for Me” singer.

Dixon continued: “Jesus is so hush-hush amongst Hollywood. Not that I was disrespected in any way for taking a stand, but it’s not the cool thing to do, and not the money maker. But [Mark and Roma] are changing that. Even just “The Bible” series and now “A.D.” — it’s just so cool to see someone finally standing up to Hollywood, its making a big difference. I’m happy to be a part of that as well.”

“A.D. The Bible Continues” premiered last month with 13.1 million viewers tuning in, and the series continues to garner ratings as the first 10 chapters of the book of Acts unfolds on the small screen. Further, the television series picks up right where Downey and Burnett’s “The Bible” series left off — exploring the aftermath of Christ’s death and its impact on his disciples as well as his mother, Mary, and key political and religious leaders of the time.

Admitting he was “such a fan” of “The Bible” series, Dixon offered his take on why so many people are now watching “A.D.The Bible Continues.”

“I think their curiosity has piqued,” Dixon told CP. “You got Mark Burnett who has some of the best shows on television right now doing this thing about the Bible. This isn’t some D-list television series, this is the real deal.”

By delving into the New Testament on a network television series, Dixon says more people than ever are learning about the Bible.

“‘The Bible series did so well and someone is finally continuing the story visually, so I think amongst the church, everyone is really excited to see how some of the stories are portrayed,” he added. “Even non-believers are saying, ‘Hey, I wonder what the Bible is all about.’ Maybe they would never pick up a Bible on their own, but they are getting to see it visually, [so] it’s really, really cool.”

“A.D. The Bible Continues” airs at 9 p.m. ET Sundays on NBC. Also, “Beyond A.D.” will be available for streaming at 9 a.m. ET on Sunday featuring Dixon, Michelle Williams, and Erwin McManus.

‘I Was Terrified’ — Partially Blind Muslim Schoolgirl Who Found Jesus Recalls Risking Her Life to Read the Bible

Rifqa (Photo: The Christian Post/Scott Liu)

Christian Post Report – Rifqa Bary speaks to The Christian Post in New York on Wednesday, May 20, 2015, a day after the release of her new memoir “Hiding in the Light: Why I risked Everything to Leave Islam and Follow Jesus.”

NEW YORK — At age 12, the concerns of most American children usually revolve around schoolyard politics and the awkwardness of becoming a teenager, but for Rifqa Bary, a young girl in Ohio, a life-changing decision to secretly convert to Christianity completely consumed her world and left her living in constant fear.

“I was terrified of my parents finding out, and for four years I hid my faith and my friends were afraid for me,” Bary, now 22, told The Christian Post on Wednesday, a day after the release of her new memoir, Hiding in the Light: Why I risked Everything to Leave Islam and Follow Jesus.

When Bary was 8, her family relocated from Sri Lanka, an Island near southeast India to the U.S., and first settled in Ohio. It was two devastating ordeals suffered by Bary that caused her family to flee her homeland and that would, in essence, lead to her leaving Islam for good.

“… I grew up on a tiny island under India named Sri Lanka and grew up in an extremely devout and strict home,” she said. “There were really two events that happened that caused the move to occur. One was I was blinded in my right eye by my brother, accidentally, and then the other was I was sexually violated by an extended family member.”

Instead of garnering sympathy and support from her family, Bary’s eye accident and sexual abuse brought shame and judgment upon her family which she said is not unusual under Islam.

“In our culture in America, when someone is abused it is the one that is abusing that is punished and there are consequences. Yet, in my Islamic culture, the victim is the one where the shame is put on them,” Bary explained. “I use this quote, I was half seen as a ‘blind picture of imperfection.’ So in my family, they were really serious about maintaining our family image, and so we moved completely to run from the shame that could potentially harm our family.”

The Ohio schoolgirl was first introduced to Christianity when a friend in middle school invited her to church.

“… She had no idea that months prior I had gotten on my knees after being physically beaten and I was at the stage where I was considering suicide at 12,” she recalled.

“I remember thinking ‘if this is what life has to offer, I don’t want it.’ I was just totally broken and I had prayed ‘God, if you are real, show me who you are and I’ll follow you; if you’re Allah, Buddha or Jesus I just want to know truth.’ And so I pray this prayer and months later I meet her and she invites me to go to church.”

Despite living in the confines of a very strict Muslim home, Bary managed to sneak in a Bible and secretly read it whenever possible.

“… When my parents would go to sleep I would stay up in the bathroom and read, and so there was a serious feeling of threat that I felt,” she shared.

For Bary, the overwhelming fear and risk of potentially dying as part of an honor killing if she were to be caught was worth it because the story of Jesus was so appealing.

“It was love,” said Bary. “That is the distinction that I can see even today, years later. In Islam, from what I experienced, there was fear and a lot of anger. You obey Allah because you are afraid of being punished. And as a Christian we obey because we love God.”

In 2009, Bary’s story made international headlines and sparked controversy when it was revealed that at age 16, she had fled her family’s New Albany home after her parents discovered her conversion to Christianity, and feared that her father would kill her.

She turned herself into police after being tracked down at the home of Florida-based pastor Rev. Blake Lorenz of the Global Revolution Church. The two had met via a Facebook prayer group and Lorenz allowed her to seek refuge at his home.

After spending a few days at a juvenile detention facility and following multiple court hearings, Bary was placed in foster homes in Ohio until she turned 18. It was there that she was diagnosed with a rare uterine cancer, which nearly cost her her life.

“Growing up I was voiceless and I feel like this book is my voice,” she said.

Bary hasn’t had any contact with her family and although she still lives in fear, she has no regrets about leaving Islam.

“I would do it all again because it has made me who I am and I have a greater sense of compassion,” she said. “… I love my family and I desperately want them to see and experience the freedom and mercy I have found in Jesus, and I forgive them.”

Leah Remini Says She’s Still Healing After Leaving Church of Scientology Two Years Ago

Actress Leah Remini speaks at a panel discussion during the Television Critics Association Summer press tour in Beverly Hills, California, in this file picture taken July 27, 2012. Remini’s departure from the Church of Scientology this week raised new questions about the relationship top leaders assume with their high-profile Hollywood members and their ability to retain them. Scientology, which was founded in 1954 by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, has attracted several Hollywood stars including Tom Cruise and John Travolta.

Christian Post Report – Actress Leah Remini has opened up about her time inside the Church of Scientology as well as her decision to leave the organization along with the rest of her family. Remini recently said that it has taken her two years to heal after leaving and that it’s something she still struggles with.

“Our decision to leave the organization — it’s not just something you get over. It’s people and a lifestyle you’ve known all your life. It formed who I am, good and bad. It formed the way I think, good and bad. And so there’s a lot of pain connected to it, there’s a lot of healing,” Remini said during an appearance on Oprah’s “Where Are They Now?” series.

The actress and her sister were raised in the organization, as their mother was a faithful member who spent a great deal of time working within the structure. Remini explained that she saw very little of her mother because the church required so much. And it was that pattern she saw repeating itself in her own relationship with her daughter that led her to decide to leave.

“I was at one of those hotels in Florida, and I saw my daughter swimming for the first time while I was reading this thing [for the church]. And a tear came down my face and I was like, ‘What am I doing?’ It was a culmination of things, but that was a big one in my mind,” said Remini.

“We had a chance to make a change from within, but they didn’t want to,” she commented about her efforts to work with friends inside Scientology to make it easier to spend time with family. “That showed me they didn’t actually care, which went against everything I thought we stood for,” she told BuzzFeed in 2014. “They only cared that their lives would be disrupted if they stood with me. They didn’t care about doing the right thing. That showed me everything the church taught me was a lie.”

Remini admitted that she was surprised her mother chose to leave with her and said that it “totally took away any resentment I may have been harboring. When it mattered the most, my mother was there for me.”

Since then, Remini has been an outspoken critic of the Church of Scientology, encouraging others who might be questioning the organization to feel free to do so and to explore other options. She’s also dealt with backlash from current members, including fellow actress Kirstie Alley, who has slammed Remini for turning her back on the church. The church itself has also spoken out about Remini’s decision and criticized her for making allegations against it.

“Given Leah Remini’s insatiable desire for attention, it comes as no surprise that for two years she has been incapable of moving on with her life and remains obsessed with shamelessly exploiting her former religion in a pathetic attempt to get publicity,” a spokesperson for the Church of Scientology told the Daily Mail.

Remini’s reality series, “Leah Remini: It’s All Relative” was recently renewed for a second season by TLC.

Young Leaving Churches That ‘Abandoned Belief in Authority of Scripture,’ Says Head of World’s Largest Pentecostal Denomination

George O. Wood, William Wilson, Oral Roberts University, Empowered21, Jerusalem (Photo: The Christian Post/Leonardo Blair)

Christian Post Report – Dr. George O. Wood, chief executive officer of the Assemblies of God Church and global co-chair of the Empowered21 Spirit-empowered movement (l) and co-chair William Wilson, president of Oral Roberts University (r) lead a prayer session on the Empowered21 Global Congress in Jerusalem, Israel on Wednesday night.

JERUSALEM — George O. Wood, chairman of the Assemblies of God Church, considered the world’s largest Pentecostal denomination with more than 67 million adherents, said Wednesday that young people are leaving traditional churches that have “abandoned a belief in the authority of Scripture.”

Wood, who also serves as global co-chair of the Empowered21 global Spirit-empowered movement along with William Wilson, president of Oral Roberts University, made his comments during a press conference at the Empowered21 Global Congress that officially opened in spiritual fanfare in Jerusalem, Israel, on Wednesday.

Responding to a question asking how the Empowered21 movement is doing among young people, considering reports that many are moving away from the church in general, Wood explained that it’s not the case for Empowered21.

“All I can do is tell you our statistics in the USA,” began Wood.

“We (Empowered21) have 3.1 million young people in the USA and 34 percent of them are under the age of 25. … The young people that are moving away from traditional religious structures in the U.S. typically belong to churches which have abandoned a belief in the authority of Scripture and the uniqueness and centrality, and exclusiveness of Jesus Christ,” said.

“They have no belief to hang on to since that has all been gutted by those who have chosen, under the guise of religion, to reject the very claims of the founder of the religion,” he said.

Wilson further added that the movement has a strategic plan which focuses on young people. A discussion on the next generation is also expected to take place during a general session on Thursday.

“We have incredible youth movements all across the world, and one of the aspects of Empowered21 … is dealing with the next generation and passing the torch of faith to the next generation,” said Wilson.

He explained that the Empowered21 movement has a strong youth arm because it preaches an authentic and personal relationship with God.

“This movement is very attractive to young people around the world because it believes we can experience God. We don’t just talk about Him, we don’t just think about Him, we actually can experience Him,” said Wilson.

“There is a whole generation of young men and women who are looking for purpose and really want their life to count and the radical message of Jesus Christ gives them that opportunity. In an expression, they can experience God in reality, so we’re seeing explosive growth in many parts of the movement among young people. It’s exciting,” said Wilson.

In remarks during his address to a crowd of almost 4,000 Spirit-filled attendees from more than 70 nations later on Wednesday night, Wood urged the Pentecostal adherents to listen to the Spirit.

“As Spirit-filled people, we must be flexible as to how the Spirit leads us and not try to put our life, our ministry, your life, your ministry, in anyone else’s mold. God’s plan for you is different from anyone else,” he said.

“Listening to the Spirit will take you to people and places you never thought you would go. We are here in the conference to hear the Spirit,” he said before launching into prayer.

Some 130 speakers, as well as musicians from around the world are slated to participate or give addresses on various topics during the five-day event including, Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference.

Wilson further noted that everyone joined the conference on a volunteer basis.

“At this particular Congress all 130 or so speakers have come at their own expense and none of them will receive an honorarium — as well as the worship leaders — so it’s quite a unique event, everybody is volunteering to serve here in Jerusalem,” said Wilson.

Sharing thoughts at the end of the first day of activities Wilson said: “This was an amazing night as we saw the world enter into the Jerusalem Pais Arena! You can sense that the attendees are passionate about seeking a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in their lives. I believe we will see great works of God this week.”

On Friday, May 22, the event will feature an outdoor worship service in Manger Square, Bethlehem. On Saturday, May 23, a special service will be held at the Jordan River at the spot where it’s believed that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. This part of the river narrowly divides the nations of Israel and Jordan. Christians are expected to gather on both sides of the river to pray and worship God together.

The Empowered21 Congress will culminated with a Pentecost celebration at the Jerusalem Pais Arena. The Jerusalem 2015 Global Congress is a call to all believers from around the world to celebrate Pentecost in the land of Pentecost. This is the second Empowered21 Global Congress. The meeting is held every five years.

Osama bin Laden Repeatedly Warned Against Formation of ISIS, Huge ‘Treasure-Trove’ of Documents Reveals

osama bin laden (Photo: Reuters / Naseer Ahmed)

Christian Post Report – A supporter of the Pakistani religious party Jamiat-e-ulema-e-Islam holds an image of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden during an anti-U.S. rally on the outskirts of Quetta May 6, 2011.

Osama bin Laden, the founder of al-Qaeda and mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, repeatedly warned his supporters against the formation of terror group ISIS, newly released documents by the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence revealed.

In one letter addressed to Atiyah abd al-Rahman, a now-deceased al-Qaeda figure, bin Laden said that efforts need to remain focused on attacking America, rather than establishing the Islamic State.

“You should ask them to avoid insisting on the formation of an Islamic State at the time being, but to work on breaking the power of our main enemy by attacking the American embassies in the African countries, such as Sierra Leone, Togo, and mainly to attack the American oil companies,” bin Laden instructed, according to an English translation of the letter.

The al-Qaeda founder, who was shot and killed by U.S. Navy SEALS in Pakistan on May 2, 2011, explains that any kind of “Islamic State” establishment needs to wait until the U.S. is completely driven out of the Middle East.

“We should stress on the importance of timing in establishing the Islamic State. We should be aware that planning for the establishment of the state begins with exhausting the main influential power [the United States] that enforced the siege on the Hamas government, and that overthrew the Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan and Iraq despite the fact this power was depleted,” bin Laden’s letter continued.

“We should keep in mind that this main power still has the capacity to lay siege on any Islamic State, and that such a siege might force the people to overthrow their duly elected governments. We have to continue with exhausting and depleting them till they become so weak that they can’t overthrow any State that we establish. That will be the time to commence with forming the Islamic state.”

Voice of America and other sources pointed out that ISIS seems to have formed in spite of this advise, and has self-proclaimed itself as the “Islamic State” on the territory of Iraq and Syria. While the terror group has captured significant territory in the region, it’s fighting a ground war against Iraqi, Syrian, and other government forces and local militias, as well as against airstrikes carried out by the U.S. and a broad coalition of international allies.

Al-Qaeda’s current leadership remains opposed to ISIS, though a number of other jihadist groups have pledged allegiance to the latter, including Boko Haram in Nigeria.

CNN noted that a total of 103 documents have been released, which makes it the largest repository of correspondence between bin Laden and al-Qaeda members ever made available to the public.

They make up only a part of the several hundred documents recovered from computers and digital media that SEALs retrieved from bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan. The discovery showed that bin Laden had a habit of extensively revising his letters, with some of the memos he wrote revised as many as 50 times.

Among the documents is a digital collection of 266 English-language books, also dubbed “Osama’s bookshelf.”

Among the books are Obama’s Wars by Bob Woodward, which details how the U.S.
administration surged troops in Afghanistan in 2009 and 2010, to books by American author Noam Chomsky, and research material on how Western academic institutions and think tanks are assessing al-Qaeda.

Are ISIS Agents Learning to Mingle?

Are ISIS Agents Learning to Mingle?

Christian Post Report –  A detailed Islamic State “secret agent” training manual has been distributed on the Internet and is designed to provide prospective ISIS supporters in Western nations with ways to disguise themselves and their motives when trying to plan and carrying out “lone wolf” attacks and espionage missions.

The 71-page e-book, which was originally published in March and has recently resurfaced on the Internet, includes wide-ranging suggestions for the group’s radicalized sympathizers in the West who are looking to make significant contributions to the terror group’s jihad, Radio Free Europe reported.

The ebook, which contains 11 chapters, advises extremists in the west not to show any signs that they’re devout Muslims so that they do not raise suspicion from national and local law enforcement agencies.

‘A.D. The Bible Continues’ Actress Chipo Chung Says ‘My Eyes Were Opened’ to Mary Magdalene’s Reality (Interview)

Christian Post Report – Chipo Chung as Mary Magdalene and Fraser Ayres as Simon the Zealot in NBC’s “A.D. The Bible Continues.”

Chipo Chung, who stars as Mary Magdalene in the 12-part series “A.D. The Bible Continues,” recently revealed her own misconceptions about her character while discussing the Bible and women’s roles in the early church with The Christian Post.

Roma Downey and Mark Burnett’s latest television series, which premiered last month before 13.1 million viewers, follows the harrowing yet uplifting story of the birth of the church.

Chung, who joins a cast that Downey said is “as diverse and beautiful as the church is around the world,” delivers a stunning performance as Mary Magdalene as “A.D.” explores the aftermath of Christ’s death and its impact on His disciples. The actress, who is half Zimbabwean, half-Chinese, stars opposite of Argentinean actor Juan Pablo di Pace who plays Jesus, while additional roles of iconic Bible characters such as John, James, and Simon the Zealot went to actors from all over the world.

In taking on the role of Mary Magdalene, Chung was forced to confront her character’s reputation in Western Christianity as being a repentant prostitute. After delving into the Bible and reversing her own errant preconceptions, Chung told CP that Mary Magdalene was instead “a teacher and quite an advanced disciple.”

The following is an edited transcript of The Christian Post’s interview with Chung.

CP: How did you prepare for the role of Mary Magdalene?

Chung: I did biblical research, obviously, and I did read some other early Christian works. I read the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, which is fascinating. It gives you an interesting picture of her as a teacher, and obviously, my eyes were being opened the entire time to my misconception [and] preconception that she was a prostitute.

She’s an enigma because she doesn’t appear that much in the Bible, actually. She’s written about around 10 times, and none of them have to do with her being a prostitute. So it’s really eye-opening to figure out why that happened. It seems that in the fourth century, Pope Gregory the Great conflated her with a number of sinful women who interacted with Jesus and said that, because she had been healed of seven demons, which Luke says, that these seven demons must have been the seven deadly sins. And therefore came this image of her that was played up in art.

In 1961, the Vatican actually issued a statement saying we got it wrong; she was not a sinful women or this penitent sinner that she been played out as. And if you read the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, she’s obviously a teacher and quite an advanced disciple, and that’s what I think she was.

CP: That’s interesting, because even for women today, once your reputation has been tarnished, it’s hard to live it down.

Chung: Absolutely. And she was a woman who worked with a lot of men. And I think there are two references for women who work with a lot of men: either they slept their way to the top and they have to be some sort of sex object, or she must be his girlfriend, wife, or consort.

No one could actually believe she was just a teacher. Those were the two options. And I realized that about the DaVinci Code version and I thought, ‘No, this is actually the same thing with a different brush,’ which is: we can’t believe that this women could possibly be as advanced as that, there had to be a man connected for her to be so important. And she is important, because for Jesus, the most important and terrifying passage from him was from crucifixion to resurrection, and she’s the one person who was there throughout.

CP: Speaking about the resurrection scene, could you describe what it was like working on the set during that pivotal moment?

Chung: It was amazing; I think it was one of the happiest days of my life, actually.

Morocco is just beautiful, and the place they had chosen had a view of hills that was just stunning. The tomb was very archetypal — that big round stone covering it, and just seeing that, with so many different versions of it in art, [was incredible.]

And then the scene has meaning on a spiritual level. On a personal level, grief and considering death, which is what I think a lot the crucifixion was about — us meditating on our death and what will happen to us, suffering of our body and what’s happens next. We’ve all grieved in that way before, for loved ones that we hope are OK. Honestly, the moment when I first saw Juan de Pablo I was really surprised with myself for how emotional I was because that is a dream fantasy for all of us — to see that our loved one is whole and happy and complete on the other side. And you know it for sure. So it was an amazing experience.

CP: How do you think “A.D. The Bible Continues” redefines women in the Bible?

Chung: Very cleverly, I think. Mainly because women had a really tough time. The world they created with the Romans was very violent, it was not a world to be fragile or vulnerable. So for Mary, that balance of leadership is difficult because she can’t be on the frontlines the way men are because women didn’t do that.

She had to work quietly in the background and I think that’s actually how a lot of women work still today, without getting much credit. There are references that you catch and glimpses of how powerful women are. In Luke, I think, where it says Mary Magdalene and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, and a number of other women were supporting the disciples “from their own means.” It doesn’t say much else than that, but that’s just a clue.

What we have with “A.D.” is the opportunity to use our imaginations in a reverent way to try and expand on that. I know some people find that difficult — that it’s the Bible and some parts aren’t in the Bible, some is creative license. But I would say to that: Jesus spoke in parables and was a storyteller and understood that we understand a higher truth through creativity, through narrative. That’s what I think “A.D.” is trying to do with women’s roles.

To really see, like Claudia is a saint in the Greek Orthodox Church, to get a sense of how difficult it was for her to be married to Pilate when she actually had a conscience. What is the human perspective on that? Because you only get a few notes in the New Testament. Otherwise, it really is all about men. Those clues are a window to a huge world because women’s stories haven’t been written down. But I think there are so many stories of how women supported the early church.

CP: In what ways has “A.D. The Bible Continues” changed or set the bar for Christian entertainment?

Chung: “A.D.” is different because it is speaking to the media of the day. In order to keep an audience and to get young people engaged with the Bible, they have to be as engaged as they are with “The Walking Dead” comics. That’s popular culture, if you’re to keep young people interested, then you’ve got to speak in their language.

I also think with “A.D.” I like that it’s made by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey who put the money where mouth in terms of beliefs and intentions. Also, having people who aren’t believers and who may be of different faiths watch the show and get interested and perhaps have a little illumination about the Bible or understanding of what their friends believe, or just enjoy the show, that’s a great step because we’re a part of a larger society.

CP: You describe yourself as an actress and then an activist, can you talk a little about the organizations you work with?

Chung: I don’t think I’ll ever stop working with S.A.F.E. but I have started working with a group of women called Rising Women, Rising World that inspires me because they are women leaders who work in a feminine way with feminine principal. That is being collaborative, being cooperative, being creative, having vision and having imagination; trying to apply softer characteristics to: how can we change the world?

A lot of them have worked in peacebuilding. I’ve really tapped into them because of this idea that I truly believe that creativity and art and culture have so much to do with our human development. That to have a more peaceful world, we have to have a more creative way of thinking and living.

“A.D. The Bible Continues” airs at 9 p.m. ET Sundays on NBC.
