WASHINGTON — As hundreds of thousands of Christians and religious minorities are living homeless in Iraq due to the rise of the Islamic State, a pastor from New York City says it is a “total embarrassment” that most American Christians are not willing to travel to the Kurdish region of Iraq to care for the persecuted.

The Rev. William Devlin, who pastors the Infinity Bible Church in South Bronx, has traveled to over 11 different countries where the persecution of Christians is rampant and in December he went to Kurdish Iraq for 11 days to provide humanitarian assistance to those displaced from their homes by ISIS.

Devlin, who’s also a registered nurse with a specialty in war trauma, told The Christian Post on Wednesday that he plans to go back to Iraq in July and hopes to recruit and even pay for other pastors to go with him.

“I always say that I am here to let you know that you are not forgotten, that the church in America has not forgotten you. But, I am one person,” Devlin said after Wednesday’s House Foreign Affairs Committee Hearing on ISIS’ destruction of cultural heritage in Iraq.

“I am one pastor out of the South Bronx. But can you imagine, particularly these megachurches that have untold resources, if the pastors get out from behind their safe, bullet-proof pulpit and come with me and get others and then do something practical. Get dirt underneath your fingernails.”

Devlin asserted that Jesus specifically calls on Christians to travel to help their brothers in sisters in times of need.

“My mode of operation is going,” Devlin said. “I think it’s great that we can have congressional hearings, it is great that pastors can stand at pulpits and say look at what is happening. However, Jesus said to go. The first two letters in the word ‘God’ are ‘G-O’ and the first two letters in the word ‘Gospel’ are ‘G-O.’ So what are we waiting for?”

When asking other American and western Christians to join him on his journey to Iraq, Devlin said he was tired of hearing the typical excuse that people can’t afford to go. That is why Devlin says he’s willing to pay for pastors’ airfare to Iraq. However, Devlin says it will be the responsibility of the pastors and their churches to pay for their transportation home.

“My goal now is to create a flood of western people who love Jesus that are willing to go over to Iraq and to learn what is going on and to provide humanitarian assistance,” the 61-year-old added.

“My number one goal is to get over there again in a repeated fashion and bring teams with me because I think it is unconscionable that we have American Christians, European Christians sitting here wringing our hands. We need to go. We need to be, what I call, an incarnational presence with the people that are being persecuted.”

Devlin said his efforts so far have resulted in at least a couple of pastors who have expressed a willingness to travel to Iraq with him. Even though he has offered to pay for other pastors’ airfares, other pastors he has talked to still have “stuttered and stammered” at the opportunity.

“I hammer social media all the time and it is interesting, the people that want to go with me are predominantly women. They want to go. We have got a crisis of cowardly men who are unwilling to go and they say ‘I have responsibility,'” Devlin said. “Well, I have responsibilities too. I have a wife and I have five kids and three grandkids, but I am still going to go. I am hesitant to take women over there because it increases the risk for them.”

“My efforts are bearing fruit and just hope that we can continue to get the call out there because I think it is a total embarrassment, it’s a black eye in the face of Jesus that we are not going over there,” Devlin continued.

Although many people might refute Devlin’s argument by saying that it’s dangerous to send Americans into Iraq, Dr. David Marx, an emergency room physician who traveled to the Kurdish north in March, contends that Kurdish protection provides for a safer environment than what most Americans think of when it comes to safety in Iraq.

“When you say the word ‘Iraq’ people freak out. But, there are areas of Iraq and Kurdistan that are relatively safe and I have always had a place in my heart for Iraq. So, when the opportunity came up for me to go over, it was like ‘man, go,'” Marx told CP. “I felt God’s hand was over us and every day we had divine appointments. That reaffirmed my reason for being there. That’s what I want to convey is that when God opens the door and calls you to go, follow through and you will be taken care over.”

Taliban Claims Responsibility for 14 Deaths, Including 1 American, in Latest Attack in Afghanistan

Afghanistan (Photo: Reuters/Omar Sobhani)

Christian Post Report – An Afghan policeman guards the gate of a guest house after an attack in Kabul, May 14, 2015. At least one gunman attacked the guest house popular with foreigners in Kabul on Wednesday killing at least five people, including an American and two Indians, in a bold assault that showed Afghanistan still faces security challenges.

The Taliban on Thursday claimed responsibility for an attack in Kabul, Afghanistan, Wednesday that left 14 people dead, including one American.

The attack began when up to three members of the Taliban stormed a home in the Afghan capital of Kabul in an attempt to assassinate the ambassador from India.

Afghan National Security Forces who responded to the crisis rescued 54 people among an estimated 100 who were trapped inside a guesthouse.

“The attack was planned carefully to target the party in which important people and Americans were attending,” the militants said, according to Agence France-Presse.

The attack stems from long-standing tension between the Taliban and Indian government. Last year the Indian consulate was attacked by four gunmen. The year before, a bombing at the Indian consulate near the border of Pakistan left six children and three adults dead.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s special envoy for good governance, Ahmad Zia Massoud, visited the site of the massacre in Kabul and tweeted a message from the president, stating that they both “offered condolences on loss of lives due to the Kabul attack. We are one when it comes to fighting terror. President @ashrafghani expressed sadness on the unfortunate demise of Indian citizens in the attack on Kabul.”

U.S. Embassy spokeswoman Monica Cummings also shared condolences for the family of the victims with AFP.

“Our thoughts are with the families of the victims at this time,” she said. “Out of respect for the families of those killed, we have no further information at this time.”

The Taliban issued a dire warning in April threatening bloodshed and multiple attacks as they seek to regain power in Afghanistan. With a large number of U.S. and NATO troops leaving the country, it is now particularly vulnerable and prone to attacks such as the one that took place in Kabul.

“The occupying forces should realize that they are not safe from our attacks under any cover or in any location,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in an emailed statement to the press.

“For the complete liberation of our beloved homeland from the yoke of foreign occupation and for the implementation of Islamic rule throughout the country, the Islamic Emirate is determined to prolong the ongoing jihad against the foreign invaders as well as their internal stooges,” the Taliban said in April.

‘A.D. – The Bible Continues’ Is God’s Plan for Teaching People about Jesus, Says Joel Houston

Christian Post Report – Hillsong Press Conference 2014: Pastor Joel Houston speaks to reporters

Joel Houston, leader of Hillsong NYC and the church’s worship band Hillsong UNITED, says NBC’s “A.D. – The Bible Continues” is “God’s plan for helping people understand who Jesus is” and is expected to appear on a companion series “Beyond A.D.” this Sunday when the seventh episode of the show will be aired.

Roma Downey and Mark Burnett’s follow-up to the “Bible” returns to NBC with more from the Book of Acts in the upcoming new episode, and simultaneously, Houston will appear on the series’ companion talk show, “Beyond A.D.”

In an interview with The Christian Post prior to taping the digital talk show Tuesday, Houston explained that “A.D. – The Bible Continues” fits God’s plan for teaching people about Jesus.

“I think honestly, the culture and the world that we live in is crying out for truth and crying out for something real,” said Houston when asked why a staggering 13.1 million viewers tuned into “A.D. – The Bible Continues” during its Easter Sunday premiere.

Houston added that people are searching for more than the “appearances and distractions” that fill today’s society.

“It’s God’s plan for helping people understand who Jesus is and why to follow Him,” he continued. “There are universal aspects of searching for love, searching for value, searching for security, for freedom – all this stuff in its purest form – that’s what the Gospel [fulfills] and what the church is all about.”

A scene from the new NBC series, “A.D.: The Bible Continues,” which airs on 12 consecutive Sundays beginning Easter weekend 2015.

This Sunday, “A.D. – The Bible Continues” will feature much more about the early church according to the book of Acts, and Hillsong UNITED’s sees the series as a “living message.”

“I just think it’s phenomenal that this story gets to run on such a public platform,” said Houston. “Showing the New Testament – I’ve read those passages of Scripture my whole life, when you play it out on the screen, there are so many parallels to the world we are living in right now.”

Houston, who leads Hillsong NYC with Carl Lentz, then elaborated on the parallels between biblical times and the world today, including the persecution of Christians.

“Every aspect of the story has so much application to today’s culture- the journey that we are taking, what it means to be building a different kingdom, all the tensions that go with that,” he said. “There aren’t answers to questions right away, we are playing it out like the apostles did and disciples did, days, months, and years after Jesus died and rose again. I find it really encouraging. They were persecuted by the Romans, so we’ve got it pretty easy.”

Sunday’s episode of “A.D. – The Bible Continues” will see things get much worse for Peter as Saul’s persecution targets him personally. Some followers stay in Jerusalem, but many flee. Also, Philip the Evangelist has unexpected success in Samaria, and the Roman emperor comes to Jerusalem – an event Pilate plans to exploit. A sneak peek of Episode 7 also reveals the miraculous healing in Samaria.

“A.D. – The Bible Continues” Episode 7 will air on NBC this Sunday, May 17 at 9 p.m. ET. The encore of last week’s Episode 6 will air directly before the new installment. As for “Beyond A.D.,” Houston joined TobyMac for this week’s edition, which will be available for streaming here at 9 a.m. ET on Sunday, May 17.

‘Duck Dynasty’ Star Willie Robertson Endorses Bobby Jindal for President; Says He Is a ‘Godly Man’

Christian Post Report – ‘Duck Dynasty’ star Willie Robertson and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal.

“Duck Dynasty” star and outspoken Christian Willie Robertson said he believes Republican Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal should run for president in 2016.

“He’s a great man. He’s a Godly man,” said Robertson in an interview with Fox Talk Radio’s “Kilmeade and Friends” Monday. “He’s honest, and so I’d like to see if he makes a run at it, and, you know, if so, we’ll definitely be trying to help him out.”

Robertson, who made a name for himself as a Christian reality star on the A&E series “Duck Dynasty” considers Jindal a good friend and recognized him for being the first Indian-American governor in the U.S.

He said the first time he met Jindal, he was amazed, not by his political skills but his preaching at a Louisiana church.

“[Jindal] stood up and preached. He wasn’t really political, he just told about his own relationship with the Lord. It was very impressive to us,” said Robertson. “I know the values he has… and that guy is one of the smartest persons I’ve ever known.”

Robertson attends the Church of Christ while Jindal is a Roman Catholic.

Jindal discussed his conversion to Christianity during the Iowa Faith in Freedom rally last month and called it the “most important moment” in his life.

“The single most important moment in my life is the moment I found Jesus Christ and the moment He found me,” said Jindal during the rally.

Jindal was raised as a Hindu and was received into the Catholic Church during his first year at Brown University.

Robertson appreciates Jindal’s conservative values and so do other Christian leaders such as Franklin Graham who recently applauded the Governor’s stance on gay marriage and religious freedom.

“I appreciate strong leaders like Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal who are defending religious freedoms in our nation,” said Graham in a Facebook post last month. “Unlike some other governors who have waffled on their positions and retreated, he says no matter how tough the opposition he will fight for passage of the Marriage and Conscience Act in this legislative session.”

Jindal told Breitbart News last month that he would make the decision whether or not he will run for president after the upcoming Louisiana legislative session which ends around the second week of June.

‘It Was Either I Kill My Cousin or He Kills Me;’ 13-Year-Old Boy Shares Story of Being Forced to Fight for ISIS

Christian Post Report – A young boy reportedly executes an alleged Israeli spy in an ISIS propaganda video released by the Islamic State on March 10, 2015.

Two 13-year-old boys trained to fight for ISIS have reportedly been captured by al-Qaeda’s branch in Syria, with one of them revealing that he was forced to fight his cousin for his life. ISIS is believed to have taken over 600 children in the Deir el Zor region in Syria, where the boys are from.

“Muslims are killing Muslims. My cousin is on the other side, so it was either I kill my cousin or he kills me,” one of the boys says in a video released by Jabhat al Nusra’s media wing on Wednesday.

The video shows the boys standing before an al-Qaeda flag, being questioned about their experiences fighting for ISIS.

Mujahid al Shami, the director of the opposition media campaign Deir el Zor Is Being Slaughtered Silently, said: “In Deir el Zor alone, there are more than 600 children who have been recruited into the Islamic State, and nearly 40 have been killed.”

International Business Times said that the majority of ISIS’ child soldiers have come from Deir el Zor and Raqqa, where the terror group has made its headquarters.

Iraqi parliament member Sheikh Shamo was quoted in a separate report on Wednesday as saying that ISIS is also forcing captured Yazidi children to become jihadist soldiers, and is brainwashing mentally handicapped boys into becoming suicide bombers.

“ISIS has established military training camps for the Yezidi children held by the group in the Syrian city of Raqqa and Tal Afar in Mosul,” Shamo said, according to The Daily Mail.

“Over the past months, many Yezidi women, children and elders managed to escape in various ways and have arrived in the Kurdistan region, but we still believe more than 3,000 Yezidis remain in the hands of ISIS,” he added.

ISIS’ jihadist training camps for children across Syria have been documented in a number of reports, with videos back in February showing children seemingly as young as five performing drills and obeying the militants’ commands. Other videos have shown children being taught to use guns, as well as observing and sometimes participating in brutalities such as beheadings and crucifixions carried out by ISIS members.

While a number of terror groups in the region have pledged their allegiance to ISIS, al-Qaeda remains on the sidelines, and has refused to follow ISIS’ leadership.

Niger has evacuated Nigerians living around Lake Chad, military and aid officials told Reuters on Tuesday, as the armies of four west African nations battle to quash the Islamist militants. A six-year insurgency by Boko Haram in Nigeria has seen thousands killed and displaced about Christian Post Report – 1.5 million people in the country. Nigerians who fled to the Nigerian border said they had been called out of their homes, lined up and brutally hurried out with no supplies. Some were picked up in trucks at the border town of Mainé-Soroa and taken to two camps in Geidam in Nigeria’s Yobe state, set up in a primary school and a small stadium. Others walked the whole way or got rides for part of the way.

Dozens of rape survivors recently rescued from Boko Haram’s stronghold in the Sambisa Forest in Borno State, Nigeria, are said to be facing stigma and harassment as they reintegrate into their communities and human rights activists are calling on the Nigerian government to help them.

Last month, 234 women and children were rescued from Islamic Militants in northeast Nigeria and sent to the Malkohi camp outside of Yola and at least 2Christian Post Report – 14 of them are now visibly pregnant. “The Nigerian government and the state government has to come up with a comprehensive approach for how to reintegrate these girls and these women back into society,” pastor Laolu Akande, executive director of the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans, recently told The Christian Post in a phone interview.

He also called on Nigerians to welcome the women and children back into their communities instead of taunting and shunning them.

“There has to be services (psychological, trauma, recovery, medical) to bring them back to the community in a very decent way,” he continued. “We also have a message to the communities to welcome these women back [and] to accept them.”

According to Akande, children of rape surviviors are often born into complex circumstances making them ideal targets for terrorist recruitment.

“It’s a very precarious situation to have somebody raped. Many people can’t decide how they’re going to raise that kind of a child,” he said. “You look at the child and then you remember the evil that was done to you, so [Boko Haram] were hoping that these children, who would be raised of these very nefarious pregnancies, not that anything is wrong with the children, but their plan and their strategy is to raise children that will continue their [evil].”

    The Real War

    Christian Post Report – 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

    • Dr. Charles F. Stanley
      (Photo: In Touch Ministries)
      Dr. Charles F. Stanley (File).

The enemy’s primary strategy against the believer is deception. We learn from 2 Corinthians 11:14 that Satan often “disguises himself as an angel of light.” In fact, Jesus called him “the father of lies” (John 8:44). Thus, our best weapon is the truth, which sets us free from deception’s bondage (v. 32).

It is hard to avoid deception when you are not aware of the adversary’s schemes (2 Corinthians 2:11). One of his oldest deceptions, which goes back to Adam and Eve, is the temptation to doubt what the Lord has said. To do so means to doubt God’s heart and character, which is similar to a soldier on the front line setting down his weapon as the enemy approaches—mistrusting God sets you up to be knocked down repeatedly by the evil one. If you listen to this voice of doubt, you give Satan a foothold. That will weaken you so that he can gear up to bring about further destruction.

Another scheme of the devil is to distract the believer. A distraction is anything that drags you away from what is most important at the moment and makes you so busy that you lose focus. Satan doesn’t use just blatantly sinful or superficial things to divert us from abiding in Christ—he will even use good things to subtly build up a wall of “noise” around you so that you gradually stop listening to God’s voice.

Ask the Lord to reveal any area in your life where you may be susceptible to deception. He will give you power to claim the truth and walk in freedom.

    Religious Indifference On the Rise

    Religious Indifference On the Rise

Christian Post Report – An extensive study by the Pew Research Center has revealed that Christians are declining sharply in America in terms of population share, while the religiously unaffiliated are rising, and now make up a larger share than American Catholics. The rise of religious intermarriages was one trend linked to the growth of the unaffiliated.

The report, which was released on Tuesday, stated: “The drop in the Christian share of the population has been driven mainly by declines among mainline Protestants and Catholics. Each of those large religious traditions has shrunk by approximately 3 percentage points since 2007. The evangelical Protestant share of the U.S. population also has dipped, but at a slower rate, falling by about 1 percentage point since 2007.”

Can Obama Work With the Faith Community to Fight Poverty?

Can Obama Work With the Faith Community to Fight Poverty?

Christian Post Report – WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama spoke Tuesday about the importance of faith and family during a panel discussion for the Catholic-Evangelical Summit on Overcoming Poverty at Georgetown University.

“Faith-based groups across the country and around the world understand the centrality and the importance of [poverty] in a intimate way — in part because these faith-based organizations are interacting with folks who are struggling and know how good these people are, and know their stories, and it’s not just theological, but it’s very concrete. They’re embedded in communities and they’re making a difference in all kinds of ways,” Obama said.

The panel was moderated by The Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne and also included Arthur Brooks, president of the American Enterprise Institute, and Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam.

“When I think about my own Christian faith and my obligations,” Obama continued, “it is important for me to do what I can myself — individually mentoring young people, or making charitable donations, or in some ways impacting whatever circles and influence I have. But I also think it’s important to have a voice in the larger debate. And I think it would be powerful for our faith-based organizations to speak out on this in a more forceful fashion.”

Pope Francis Condemns ISIS, Boko Haram; Says Groups Persecuting Christians Don’t Know God

    Pope Francis (Photo: Reuters/Tony Gentile)

Christian Post Report – Pope Francis blesses the missal as he leads a mass on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian mass killings, in St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican April 12, 2015. Pope Francis on Sunday commemorated the 100th anniversary of the massacre of as many as 1.5 million Armenians as “the first genocide of the 20th century,” words that could draw an angry reaction from Turkey.

Pope Francis condemned the ongoing persecution of Christians by radical Islamic groups such as ISIS and Boko Haram Monday during Mass at the Vatican and said even though these groups believe they are serving God with their actions, they do not truly know Him.

The Mass included a reading from John 16:2-3 where Jesus says “the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God. They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me.”

Francis followed the reading with his homily where he said there are some who “kill Christians in the name of God because they think they are infidels.” The Pontiff encouraged listeners to take heart by telling them how Jesus prophesied that His followers would be persecuted as He was and would suffer through tribulations.

“But do not be scandalized,” said Francis. “The Holy Spirit will guide us and help us understand.”

ISIS militants preparing to execute a group of Ethiopian Christians in Libya in a video released on April 19, 2015.

He also discussed the recent slaying of 21 Coptic Christians at the hands of ISIS militants in Libya.

“I called to mind his faithful, who were slaughtered on the beach because they are Christians. Because of the strength given them by the Holy Spirit, they were not scandalized,” he said. “They died with the name of Jesus on their lips. This is the power of the Spirit. Witness. Martyrdom is the supreme witness.”

ISIS militants beheaded the 21 Coptic Christians and released a video recording of their murders in February.

Pope Francis is no stranger to hostility from ISIS either. Earlier this year, the radical Islamic group threatened his life according to Vatican police. They said they were not aware however of any specific plans to carry out an attack.

In recent months, ISIS has made headlines for crucifying men such as robbers and adulterers. They also killed gay men by throwing them off the roofs of buildings. Members of the group have even gone as far as pretending to be homosexuals in order to expose other gays and kill them.

Other reports point to ISIS chopping off children’s hands and burying them alive.

Boko Haram, a group that has rebranded itself as an African counterpart of the Islamic State, kicked off 2015 by killing close to 2000 people in an attack on the town of Baga and surrounding villages in Borno State, Nigeria. Christian leaders in the community confirmed that several churches were burned down in the attack.

The group has also abducted over 700 women within the last nine months. A reported 677 have been rescued by the Nigerian military from the militants in recent weeks.

Late last month, 238 women and children were rescued in northeast Nigeria and at least 214 of them were visibly pregnant as a result of being repeatedly raped by Boko Haram.
