Is ISIS a Copycat? ‘Rivalry’ With Boko Haram Inspired Brutal Abductions of Christians, Yazidis in Iraq, Says Rights Lawyer

Nigerian human rights lawyer Emmanuel Ogebe (right) explains the implications that the merger between ISIS and Boko Haram will have in West Africa during a discussion at the Hudson Institute in Washington D.C. on March 23, 2015.

Christian Post Report – WASHINGTON – Nigerian human rights lawyer Emmanuel Ogebe insinuated that ISIS’ systemic abductions of religious minorities in Iraq last summer were inspired by Boko Haram’s kidnapping of over 276 Chibok schoolgirls last April.

Ogebe, who became the youngest law graduate in Nigeria and was exiled to the United States as a political detainee, explained at an event hosted by the Hudson Institute on Monday, that after Boko Haram abducted the schoolgirls in the town of Chibok in April 2014, the terrorist organization Al Qaeda issued a statement condemning the group’s kidnappings. He further explained that although Al Qaeda decried Boko Haram’s abduction of the girls, the Al Qaeda offshoot, ISIS, responded in the opposite manner.

“What was ISIS response?” Ogebe asked. “ISIS’ response to the Chibok schoolgirls was to begin abducting Yazidis and Christians in Iraq. That seemed to be the point of where ISIS said, ‘You know what, if these guys are getting this kind of condemnation from Al Qaeda, let’s [relate] with them. They are good guys to get into bed with.'”

“Their relationship has been one of grudging admiration and rivalry,” Ogebe added.

As ISIS began seizing large areas of northern Iraq throughout the summer months of 2014, the group made a systematic habit of sexually enslaving the religious minority women, while killing off the religious minority men in the villages that they raided and conquered.

Although the number of Iraqi citizens killed in 2014 was approximately 17,000, thanks in large part to the rise of ISIS, Ogebe reasoned that Boko Haram was a deadlier group than ISIS last year. According to the United Nations, Boko Haram accounted for nearly 10,000 deaths, while it displaced nearly 1.5 million in 2014.

Even though ISIS has released publicized mass execution videos, with one of the group’s latest videos showing the beheading of 21 Coptic Christians in Libya, Ogebe stated that Boko Haram’s mass executions tend to involve many more victims than ISIS’ mass executions.

Ogebe described an instance in September 2013 where Boko Haram militants beheaded over 150 Christians by setting up a roadblock and disguising themselves as Nigerian military personnel. As people drove through the roadblock, the militants checked individuals’ identification cards to see if they were Christian. As Christians went through the roadblock and were identified, they were all abruptly beheaded with a chainsaw.

“You have cars lined about 10 kilometers patiently waiting for their deaths not knowing that this was a roadblock set up by Boko Haram,” Ogebe said. “[T]hey used chainsaws because they wanted to quickly go through the traffic.”

Although Boko Haram is as deadly, if not deadlier than ISIS, the international community does not recognize that because ISIS knows how to publicize its atrocities and the international media is so focused on ISIS, Ogebe said.

“The reason why Boko Haram’s atrocities are way more egregious than ISIS and have not garnered attention is partly because ISIS is more tech savvy than Boko Haram,” Ogebe added. “A merger of Boko Haram and ISIS is equivalent to the merger of Delta and Northwest creating the super airline. This doesn’t mean higher ticket prices, it just means a higher body count.”

Chibok girls (Photo: The Christian Post / Samuel Smith)

Four Chibok girls, who were kidnapped by Boko Haram in April 2014 and later escaped, acting as silent witnesses during a Hudson Institute discussion on Boko Haram in Washington D.C. on March 23, 2015.

Also in attendance at the Hudson Institute on Monday were four Chibok schoolgirls who escaped from the Boko Haram abduction last April. The four stood in front of the audience and acted as silent witnesses to the atrocity.

Speaking on behalf of the 200-plus other girls that are still being held by Boko Haram, Bukky Shonibare, a leading team member of the #BringBackOurGirls Campaign, stressed that it is shameful that nearly a year after the abduction, no progress has been made by the Nigerian government or international community in attempting to rescue the girls.

Shonibare explained that the girls who have been abducted are likely being used as militants’ wives and a few of them that have escaped have come back pregnant.

“This is a Nigerian problem and if we don’t deal with it then we are setting ourselves up for a bigger problem,” Shonibare said.”We feel something that if the government of Nigeria and the international community and the whole world does not respond to this issue of victims of insurgency, especially internationally displaced persons and refugees, then there is a ticking time bomb.”

Shonibare additionally demanded for people all over the world to urge their governments to take action to help return the Chibok girls to their family. Shonibare stressed that allowing groups like Boko Haram to kidnap over 200 girls and get away with it sends the wrong message to the “human race.”

“In 22 days it will be one year since the abduction,” Shonibare stated. “That sends a strong message to us, not just to Nigeria but to human race, that two-hundred-and-something girls can be abducted somewhere and 343 days after they are not yet back. That is a big problem that we have to look into.”

Televangelist Benny Hinn Suffers Heart Attack After Trip to Brazil; Family Asks for Prayers as He Recovers in Hospital

Christian Post Report – Popular miracle-working faith healer and televangelist, Benny Hinn, 62, is now recovering in a hospital after suffering a heart attack after an overseas trip and his family is asking for prayers.

Hinn’s daughter, Jessica Hinn Koulianos, made the revelation in a message on the Benny Hinn Ministries website late Monday evening.

“Recently he (Hinn) returned to California after ministering to crowds of over 100,000 people in Brazil, including over 2,000 pastors and leaders from all over South America. It was truly a remarkable nation-shaking event. And while it was a rewarding journey, after he arrived home he suddenly began battling fatigue and shortness of breath. For those of you who know my Dad, you know that he never stops; so when he spent over a week in bed, we knew something was wrong. I flew to California to be with him and insisted that he see a doctor. On Friday, he consulted with his local physician and was admitted to the hospital, where he was treated for lack of oxygen in his cardiovascular system,” wrote Koulianos.

Televangelist Benny Hinn, ministering recently in Brazil, places a hand over his heart.

According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute Hinn’s symptoms are indicative of a heart attack.
“A heart attack happens when the flow of oxygen-rich blood to a section of heart muscle suddenly becomes blocked and the heart can’t get oxygen. If blood flow isn’t restored quickly, the section of heart muscle begins to die,” the institute website explains.

“Heart attacks are a leading killer of both men and women in the United States,” it adds.

Hinn’s daughter explained that: “Once he got in the hospital he experienced almost immediate relief and has continued to grow stronger each day. At this moment, his physicians are conducting thorough tests, the results of which have been very positive. He is alert and in good spirits, and we expect he will be released later this week.”

Already according to Koulianos, Hinn’s family has been receiving an outpouring of support. “My dad, Pastor Benny Hinn, asked me to send you a quick message from the family, so that you could hear it straight from me. He asked me to share, from the depths of his heart, how much he appreciates your outpouring of love and support, and for the best gift you can give: your prayers. He also asked me to convey to you how much he loves each of you and thanks you for all you’re doing for the ministry and for the kingdom,” she said.

“By God’s grace and with the help of your prayers, we are told to expect a complete recovery. More importantly, his doctors are assuring him that within a very short time he will be on his feet ministering around the world again, just as he has for over 40 years,” she said.

Hinn is considered a prosperity preacher who teaches “seed-faith giving” that people “reap” what they “sow.” Last year, he asked his supporters to donate $1000 to his ministry suggesting that they would enter a “new dimension of favor and increase.” His TV program This Is Your Day! is among the world’s most-watched Christian programs, seen daily in 200 countries.

The Pirate Bay Suddenly Goes Offline

Christian Post Report – The Pirate Bay recently went offline at the start of the weekend following news it had successfully thrown off ISP blocks after it returned earlier this year.

Peer-to-peer file sharing website The Pirate Bay alarmed users when it became unresponsive and went offline Friday, despite news that emerged it was effectively thwarting blocks from ISPs after its resurgence at the beginning of February following its December 2014 closure.

Showing an error message: “Error 521 Web server is down,” this is apparently not the first time the BitTorrent site has exhibited this message. Users also experienced the same issues earlier this month when the popular media file sharing site went offline.

The hosting error message indicated the site’s web server, managed by CloudFlare wasn’t returning a connection. However, CloudFlare offers an Always Online feature that allows users to access The Pirate Bay’s offline pages, enabling them to “continue to surf a snapshot of the site,” a message displayed read.

Users reported the site was down, but were able to access and download from the site via https://thepiratebay.se/search. Some users also reported erratic access, but continued trying to log in and were able to access the site after a few tries.

With the website down, other file sharing sites like Kicka– Torrents, Yi-Fy, TorrentDay and Demonoid absorbed some of the fallout with users gravitating to their sites after TPB access proved unsuccessful.

The Pirate Bay’s Nacka station data center was raided by Swedish Polish in December 2014 and was shut down for violating copyright law. After a teaser countdown clock appeared on its site in January, featuring a phoenix rising from the ashes, it came back online in February 1, 2015, equipped with new ISP block evading capabilities courtesy of its partnership with CloudFlare, a US-based domain name server and content delivery network system.

Christian Post Report – Amber Portwood was sent to jail for 17 months for drug abuse and domestic violence charges, and now the “Teen Mom OG” star is returning for a new season of MTV’s reality series and says that she is determined to show that she has changed and is getting her life back on track.

“I didn’t want people to have a bad taste in their mouth of things that happened in the past,” she told People magazine. “I thought, ‘This is my chance, don’t blow it.'”

Portwood made headlines when she made the decision to report to jail back in June 2012 rather than attend a court mandated rehab program. She tells People that in a way, being in prison saved her life.

“The only thing I could see happening to me if I [hadn’t] gone to prison is I would have died. I would have overdosed. When you’re an addict you know what your bottom,” she explained.

Portwood revealed that she earned her G.E.D. while in prison and is now trying to decide between colleges.

“Obviously I had some speed bumps. But it’s never too late to try to get your life back and so something positive,” she tells the magazine.

“The whole time I was in there I worked my [expletive] off. There were hundreds of hours of drug addiction classes. I did extra classes, parenting and anger management and even started teaching. I put myself in there for a reason so I didn’t want to make it a waste,” she adds.

Now, aside from being on the “Teen Mom OG,” Portwood is busy raising her daughter Leah. She has also found love with 43-year-old fiancé Matt Baier.

“He’s amazing, funny, carry and loving,” said Portwood. “We want to be engaged for at least a year before we really jump into anything. We want everything in place.”

Chris Brown Celebrates End of Probation in Rihanna Assault Case

Chris Brown’s probation ends after Judge Brandlin found that the singer has completed his 1,000 hours of community service.

Christian Post Report – Chris Brown’s felony probation in an assault case over his 2009 attack on ex-girlfriend Rihanna has ended.

Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin ended Brown’s probation on Friday, March 21, more than six years after the R&B singer brutally attacked his then-girlfriend hours before the Grammy Awards.

The Los Angeles District Attorney confirmed to E! News that the 25-year old’s probation ended when Judge Brandlin found that Brown had officially completed his 1,000 hours of community service and the Probation Department concluded that there were no violations. Brandlin’s decision marks the first time since mid-2009 that Brown will not be under the supervision of court or probation officials.

The singer and his attorney, Mark Geragos, hugged in the courtroom and again in a courthouse elevator. After the hearing, Brown tweeted, “I’m off probation!!!!! Thank the Lord!!!!!”

“I couldn’t be more delighted,” said Geragos after the hearing. “He is in a spot right now and a place right now that I couldn’t be prouder of him.”

Brown was 19 years old when he attacked Rihanna in a sports car after leaving a pre-Grammy Awards party. Brown fled the scene but turned himself in to police hours later and was charged with felony assault.

TMZ posted a photo of Rihanna’s face, which showed extensive injuries. In a search warrant affidavit, it was revealed that Brown repeatedly punched Rihanna, bit her ear, and choked her to the point that she almost lost consciousness.

Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault in June 2009 and was ordered to stay away from the “Umbrella” singer. As part of his sentence, Brown was required to undergo violence counseling. Judge Brandlin also ordered Brown into rehab, which resulted in the singer being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and complications from substance abuse.

Calvary Chapel Hosts ‘Little Boy’ Screening: Child Star’s Father Offers Powerful Testimony

Calvary Church Little Boy Screening (Photo: Courtesy of MJM Group)

Calvary Church hosted a screening of Little Boy.

Christian Post Report – Calvary Chapel hosted a special screening of “Little Boy” in Costa Mesa, California over the weekend where the film’s star, Jakob Salvati, joined his father onstage for a performance and a testimony.

Roma Downey and Mark Burnett’s latest feature film is set to hit theaters on April 24, but select church leaders enjoyed an early screening of “Little Boy” starring Salvati. Following the screening, Salvati and his father, Bruce Salvati, performed the worship song “How He Loves Me” before the family revealed the significance of the screening location.

“In 1977, I became a Christian because of the ministry of Calvary Chapel of the Orange Coast College Campus,” Bruce explained, according to The Christian Post exclusively. “It was a great privilege to be on the stage that gave birth to the Jesus movement and accompany my son on the guitar.”

Salvati went on to recognize the church’s influence on Hollywood while also citing Calvary Chapel’s founder, Pastor Chuck Smith.

“Every generation needs its own Jesus Movement and sometimes it takes different forms,” he said. “Maybe the next one will be in the area of movies. I only wish Pastor Chuck could have been here.”

Also during the evening, Calvary Chapel’s Pastor Dave Manne led a Q&A with Jakob who shed light on what it was like working on “Little Boy” with producers Downey and Burnett, revealing which is his favorite Bible verse, and thanking Calvary Chapel for hosting the screening. Manne reflected the child actor’s gratitude, citing Salvati as a blessing to the church.

“We were blessed by ‘Little Boy,’ but especially by the presence of Jakob,” said Mann. “The film was positive, entertaining, and inspiring, but everyone was moved by Jakob’s performance in the film. It’s rare to see such a young actor capturing such deep emotion with a genuine authenticity. Jakob truly drove the message of the film onto each one of our hearts.”

“Little Boy,” which hits theaters everywhere April 24, follows Salvati as Pepper Busbee, a child struggling with the stigma of being small for his age. Pepper’s only friend, his father, is drafted to Japan during WWII leaving Pepper relying on faith to bring him back. The film also stars Kevin James, Emily Watson and Tom Wilkinson.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 vs HTC One M9

Christian Post Report – HTC has another hit on its lineup as the company recently announced its new flagship phone, the HTC One M9, at Barcelona’s MWC 2015. Elegantly designed and armed with impressive specs, the phone proves that it can go head to head against many top phones in the market. But how will it fare against Samsung’s 2014 best seller, the Galaxy Note 4? The Galaxy Note 4 got a lot of attention due to its big screen, stylus, and premium design, and it still continues to do well though the Korean company has already announced its latest flagship, the Galaxy S6.

Here, we compare the two devices:

Design:
The HTC One M9 is superbly crafted, with its all-metal body and gently rounded back which makes it easier to hold. The edge of the phone is a different color from the body, which gives it a two-tone effect. . The phone measures 5.69 x 2.74 x 0.38 inches and weighs 5.54 ounces. Color variations to choose from include a gold edge around a silver body, a polished silver edge around a dark grey body, and a polished gold edge around a gold body. The phone has an IP X3 rating and is splash resistant.

Meanwhile, Samsung has eschewed its usual polycarbonate shell found in previous phones for an all-metal build for the Galaxy Note 4. The back is slightly more textured than the Note 3, though it’s free from the faux stitching detail found on its predecessor. The phone measures 6.04 x 3.09 x 0.33 inches and weighs 6.21 ounces. It’s available in black, gold, white, and pink.

Features:
Both phones have bright and clear screens with incredible pixel density counts. The HTC handset has a 5-inch display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and pixel density of 441ppi, while the Samsung device has a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels and pixel count of 515ppi.

The One M9 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor, and runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop with HTC Sense 7 skin on top, while the Galaxy Note 4 has the Exynos Octa 7 octa-core chip set and runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The HTC device has a 20MP rear camera and 4MP front camera, while the Samsung phone has a 16MP rear facing camera and 3.7MP front facing shooter.

Price:
Off contract, the HTC One M9 is expected to cost $870 once it goes on sale while the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 costs $700.

Breakaway Episcopal Diocese Says Church Property Won’t Be Used to Host Gay Weddings

Diocese (Photo: SC Diocese)

A banner bearing the seal of the Protestant Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina.

Christian Post Report – A diocese that broke away from The Episcopal Church over theological differences and the treatment of its bishop has passed a resolution barring gay marriage ceremonies from being performed at its facilities.

The Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, a church body that broke away from the liberal mainline church in 2012, passed the resolution earlier this month at their convention.

Known as Resolution R-4, the document was titled “A Resolution to Adopt a Standing Resolution on Marriage” and was passed in response to the current debate over marriage definition in the United States. The resolution also states that the diocese will only host weddings for couples (one man and one woman) “whose birth gender identities were respectively male and female.”

” … [I]t is important in a time of cultural uncertainty, that the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of South Carolina have a clear doctrinal expression of its position regarding the nature of Christian marriage as practiced by this church,” noted R-4’s one whereas clause.

Resolution R-4 went on to define marriage as having “only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture.”

“The diocese will only recognize and solemnize marriages between a biological man and a biological woman, that is between two persons whose birth gender identities were respectively male and female,” continued the resolution.

“Further, the clergy and staff of the diocese shall only participate in weddings and solemnize marriages between one man and one woman. The facilities and property of the diocese shall only host weddings between one man and one woman.”

In November 2012 the diocese voted to leave the Episcopal Church because of the national denomination’s apparent mistreatment of its bishop, the Rev. Mark Lawrence.

Another point of contention was The Episcopal Church’s increasing acceptance of homosexuality over the past several years.

In January 2013, a lawsuit ensued over who had control of the diocesan name and property, the breakaway leadership or those in the diocese who remained loyal to The Episcopal Church.

Last month, Judge Diane Goodstein ruled in favor of the breakaway leadership, issuing an order that said they rightfully owned the approximately $500 million worth of church property.

Goodstein argued that the diocese owns all real and personal property, according the paperwork connected to the diocesan property.

“It is equally undisputed that there is nothing in the deeds of their real property referencing any trust in favor of TEC,” reads the 46-page decision.

The Episcopalians loyal to the denomination, who call themselves The Episcopal Church in South Carolina, intend to appeal the ruling.

Resolution R-4 came as part of the Diocese of South Carolina’s 224th Convention, held in Charleston on March 13-14.

Diocese Communications Director Joy Hunter wrote that Resolution R-4 was one of three overwhelmingly approved resolutions at the convention regarding marriage and sexuality.

“Resolution R-2 asked the Standing Committee to work with the Task Force on Marriage to develop marriage and employment policy recommendations to be acted upon, as needed, at the 2016 Diocesan Convention,” wrote Hunter. “Resolution R-3 charged the Task Force to develop educational resources for parishes regarding marriage and gender identity also to be presented at the 2016 Diocesan Convention.”
