Christian Post Report – The Belmont Bruins face an uphill battle as they play the Virginia Cavaliers at Time Warner Cable Arena in the second round of the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament. Tip-off is at 3:10 PM ET on March 20, 2015.

The Cavaliers finished with a 29-3 record, securing the top spot in the ACC standings. They also went 16-2 in the conference, beating out teams like Duke, Louisville and Syracuse. Virginia won 10 of their last 12 matches, but their most recent match ended in a 71-67 loss to the University of North Carolina. In that upset, Malcolm Brogdon scored 25 points for Virginia, but also had three turnovers to his name.

Anthony Gill and London Perrantes both had 12 points in the loss, as Virginia allowed North Carolina to shoot 55 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc to secure the victory.

The Bruins finished the season 22-10, leading the East in the Ohio Valley.

They’ve won seven straight matches, capped off with an amazing upset of Murray State in the conference final. In the 88-87 win, Taylor Barnette hit a clutch three-pointer with only three seconds left to give the Bruins a one-point lead.

This also marks their return to the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time since 2013.

Craig Bradshaw leads the team in scoring with 18.1 per contest, while also averaging 3.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. Evan Bradds scores over 14 points per contest, while shooting with an average of 69 percent from the field.

‘Life Is Miserable in Pakistan’ — Activist and Friend of Shahbaz Bhatti Says Blasphemy Laws, Anti-West Sentiment Provoke Christian Persecution

People from the Christian community attend a protest, to condemn suicide bombings which took place outside two churches in Lahore, in Karachi, March 16, 2015. Suicide bombings outside two churches in Lahore killed 14 people and wounded nearly 80 others during services on Sunday in attacks claimed by a faction of the Pakistani Taliban.

Christian Post Report – NEW YORK — A former Pakistani parliamentarian advocating for equal treatment for religious minorities back home claims life is sometimes hell for the Islamic Republic’s Christian minorities, who are often victimized by blasphemy laws and bear the brunt of public resentment against Western nations like the United States.

“Due to our faith, we are persecuted. People are killing us, people are burning us, and people are putting us in jail. And (the) state (has) failed to protect the rights (of Christians) and (have failed in) their responsibility,” said political and human rights activist Pervez Rafique. “The state doesn’t have any solid and concrete policy and agenda and plan to protect marginalized and persecuted Christians and other non-Muslims in Pakistan.”

Rafique, a former minority member of parliament representing the Pakistan People’s Party in Punjab, worked alongside Shahbaz Bhatti, the Christian minorities minister who was assassinated in 2011, as a chief coordinator for All Pakistan Minorities Alliance. At the time of transition prompted by Bhatti’s murder, a clash with the former leader’s family members forced Rafique and supporters to leave the organization he had served for more than 10 years. Since then, Rafique has helped found another group, with a similar name, the All Pakistan Minorities Alliance-Founders, which in combination with the PAK Christian Fellowship, represents around 25,000 people, he told The Christian Post.

“Religious organizations, especially the Taliban and their allied organizations, they are getting a message to the international community,” Rafique added. “They think that (by) persecuting Christians, attacking Christians and killing Christians, they will get revenge (on) the international community, such as America or the European community or the United Nations (and) those that are taking steps for peace-building against ISIS, against Islamist militant organizations.”

This is an excerpt of the preamble of the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, that assures provision for freedom of religion for the country’s religious minorities.

Christians, along with Hindu citizens, account for 3 to 4 percent of the estimated 180 million people living in the country, and are in general treated as second-class citizens. Many barely survive financially, face discrimination in the workforce, and are scapegoated due to their “Western” faith by Islamic terrorists and intolerant Muslims. Pakistan’s constitution assures “adequate provision” for minorities to “freely profess and practice their religions and develop their cultures,” yet allegations of violating the country’s blasphemy laws are often leveled arbitrarily against them based on the words of purported witnesses, and sometimes over personal grudges.

Christian communities have also been targets of attacks by Islamic extremists. The most recent attacks against Christians occurred on Sunday, March 15 during services at churches in the Youhanabad area of Lahore, the capital of Punjab state and Pakistan’s second largest city. Two suicide bombers targeted two neighboring Protestant and Roman Catholic churches, killing at least 15 people and injuring nearly 80 others. The Pakistani Taliban, or Tehrik-i-Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Some residents in Youhanabad, a predominantly Christian area, reacted to the terrorist attacks in fury, and reportedly killed two men suspected of being associated with the bombers. Thousands of Christians also flooded the streets, expressing outrage over again being targeted and demanded justice.

A crowd lynches a man they suspect of being involved in a suicide attack on a church in Lahore on March 15, 2015. A Pakistani Taliban splinter group claimed responsibility claimed responsibility for the bombings that killed at least 14 people and wounded nearly 80 others.

Rafique told CP that after the attacks, he had been receiving “lots of calls” from Lahore, where his organizations have “a strong network.” He is from Faisalabad, another large city with a Christian presence in Punjab.

“I think this is an alarming situation for the religious minority community of Pakistan, especially for the Christian community of Pakistan,” Rafique told CP after strongly condemning the church attacks.

“Pakistani Christians are in a tough state right now, their lives are at stake. And there is nobody who’s going to put the pressure on the government from America or from the Congress and from the religious organizations,” he added. “So I ask the international community to play their vital role, visible role, to protect the Christian communities and the persecuted religious minority communities in Pakistan, those who are under severe, severe threat from the Taliban.”

Rafique, who emigrated to New York City in February 2014, told CP that he was desperately trying to garner support in the U.S. for the oppressed and persecuted Christians in Pakistan. He said he plans to do so by pressuring religious and humanitarian groups, political organizations and government bodies to demand that Pakistan repeal its blasphemy laws, protect its people, and promote tolerance. Rafique is also appealing to Christian-interest organizations to help equip in various ways the everyday Christians and activists who have been on the front lines fighting for equal treatment under the law in Pakistan.

In November, the 43-year-old politician and human rights activist helped lead a demonstration in front of the United Nations headquarters, where his group submitted a memorandum demanding that the international body remind Pakistan of its obligations under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a member state. Rafique and other group leaders have also personally delivered their message to Raja Ali Ejaz, consul general at New York City’s Pakistan Consulate.

In his discussion with CP, Rafique, whose favorite Bible passage speaks of restoration and liberation (Isaiah 61:1), laid out his organization’s road map for education, empowerment and social mobility for Pakistan’s minority Christians. He also explained how Christians face discrimination in employment, and are viewed as a “sweeper class” in Pakistan.

Initially, Rafique explained the political and legal situation for Christians in Pakistan:

“In Pakistan, the constitution of Pakistan is biased, and the laws in Pakistan are (discriminatory). Due to the laws and constitution which has treated us on the basis of religion, caste, color or creed, we the non-Muslim citizens, religious minorities and especially Christian community of Pakistan feel that we are second- and third-class citizens in Pakistan.”

“The state (has) become a religious extremist state. It is a theocratic state, which is against the wish and against the ideas of the founding father of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He categorically mentioned in his first address to the Constituent Assembly (of Pakistan) in 1947, Aug. 11, that the state doesn’t have any affairs with religion, everyone is equal and have similar rights being a citizen of Pakistan, (whether) he’s a Christian, Muslim, men, women, or any color, caste, or creed.

“But after his death, (there were) lots of political parties, lots of government schemes to promote and protect their government. They always introduced religious clauses in the constitution of Pakistan and introduced religious discriminatory laws which harm the religious minorities, especially the Christian community of Pakistan.

“The majority of people relate (the) Christian community with the international community, with the American West — a Christian-majority country — with us, and they treated us in that way.”

Watch Bishop Samuel Azariah, primate of The Church of Pakistan (United) explain blasphemy laws:

Rafique also offered thanks to the international community while calling on “every Jesus-filled and loving person” to act on behalf of Pakistan’s Christians:

“Today, I want to first (say) thanks the international community, those who are already aware (of) the religious persecution, Christian persecution in Pakistan. But I want to convey, or I want to request (of) them, put your eye on the Pakistani religious extremism and save your brothers and sisters in Christ, because we are apart of one Body, with Jesus as our head. It is the responsibility of every humanitarian organization and every church-based organization, and every Jesus-filled and loving person, that you should do the things and try to save your Pakistani brothers and sisters in Pakistan.

“We feel insecure. We feel marginalized, and we are marginalized. And we feel every time under a severe threat, psychologically, that we never know when anybody (will) charge us under the blasphemy law, when anybody (will) charge us under the other constitutional and Pakistani penal code laws, and put us (behind) bars, or burn us, or kill us.” …

“Whenever the Muslim organizations protest against America, they burn the cross, they burn the American flag. Whenever they want to protest against the European Union, they burn the cross, they burn the churches, they threaten the Christians. They relate us due to our faith.”

Rafique said the Nov. 4, 2014, attack on Shahzad Masih and his pregnant wife, Shama Bibi — both beaten and burned to death after being accused of blasphemy by Muslims in Punjab — was a wake-up call for many Pakistanis:

“It is a case where we say too much is too much. It is too much. … Make this case a reference case, because right now all the religious organizations in Pakistan, they are also clear that this blasphemy law is being misused. Before 20 years when we started talking about all this blasphemy law, people (were) not ready even to talk about this issue. After 15-20 years, now in this case, after this case, we have an achievement that religious Muslim organizations, religious clerics from the Muslim community also, realized that yes, this law is being misused.” …

“After this case, we feel more insecure in Pakistan, and there’s nobody who can speak for their rights. People have small groups but they are not influential. International media, international community should come up with this and be the voice of (the) voiceless. We are trying to be the voice of (the) voiceless and we cannot alone deal with this issue, until or unless the international community will engage with us and stand with us. This is a time to stand with humanity. This is the time to stand with Christianity, and this is the time to stand with all the people, those who are persecuted in Pakistan, in the name of religious or caste, color or creed.”

Watch a news report on a Pakistani “blasphemy” couple burned alive in the video below:

Rafique said the key to ensuring equitable treatment for all Pakistanis is for the government to transition away from being a theocratic state:

“We are a peace promoter. We want to change Pakistan in a progressive and secular and liberal state from the theocratic state. And we want to assure the rights of every citizen, equal opportunities and equal rights and equal progress for all. So we ask the international community, international agencies, international organizations, United Nation, we ask big players of (the) international community, those who are specially engaged with Pakistan, to ask Pakistan to implement on the United Nations Declaration for Human Rights … to make them bound to act like that charter.”

Rafique also mentioned his group’s 10-year road map for advancement:

“Also for the development of Pakistani Christians, we had a 10-year road map and next year, I want to, as a leader of Pakistan Christian community, as organization (leader), I want to launch a first-ever road map for the Christian development in Pakistan. We want to develop them educationally, economically and religiously and socially.”…

The Cavs were excellent from beyond the three point line, converting 15 of their 29 attempts. In total, they shot 55 percent from the field while holding the Nets to 45 percent shooting.

Meanwhile, the Pacers have lost three straight matches after winning seven straight.

They lost to the Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors and Chicago Bulls to drop out of the top eight in the East.

Christian Post Report – The Oklahoma City Thunder will try to get their fourth straight win at home as they face the Atlanta Hawks at the Chesapeake Energy Arena. The match starts at 8 p.m. ET on March 20, 2015.

Currently holding on to the eighth spot in the West, the Thunder are only 0.5 games ahead of the New Orleans Hornets.

Steven Adams made his presence felt as a replacement for the injured Serge Ibaka. Adams scored 14 points while pulling down 13 rebounds in 38 minutes.

Russell Westbrook scored 36 but only went 31 percent from the field, but he pulled five rebounds, dished out 10 assists and had five steals to his credit.

Meanwhile, the Hawks recently lost 114-95 to the Golden State Warriors in a battle between the best of the East and West.

Android 5.1 Lollipop Release Date Arriving to Motorola Droid Turbo Soon

Moto Droid Turbo Youtube Screenshot/ file

The Moto Droid Turbo is exclusively produced by Motorola for Verizon Wireless

Christian Post Report – Just before 2014 ended, Motorola made a big announcement that introduced the world to the best Android-powered smartphone of the year, the Droid Turbo. Unfortunately, the device is only available through Verizon Wireless in the U.S.

Although there are other parts of the world where the Droid Turbo is available under the brand name Moto Maxx, only Verizon is getting the special treatment in the U.S. For users of the smartphone who have been wondering when it will be updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop, do not bother waiting.

According to a report by GSM Arena, the Motorola device won’t get version 5.0, but head straight to Android 5.1 in the coming weeks.

The information came from Motorola software engineer Luciano Carvalho, who hinted the details after answering some questions at Google+.

In the report, Google has just launched Android 5.1 for supported Nexus devices, which are the Nexus 6 from Motorola and Nexus 9 from HTC.

Older Nexus phones have not yet received the latest update.

In spite breaking away from Google almost a year ago, Motorola still maintains a close relationship with the tech giant. An obvious proof is the fact that the latest Android updates arrive to some Motorola phones earlier than even some Nexus handsets.

Once the Droid Turbo gets Android 5.1 Lollipop, it would reportedly begin supporting VoLTE features.

Announced late last year, the Motorola smartphone packs a 5.2-inch display with QHD or 2K (2560 x 1440) resolution, 3GB of RAM, and a Snapdragon 805 chipset.

The smartphone also features the highest camera sensor ever placed on a Motorola phone – 21MP made by Sony.

Until now, there are still some Android fans who are hoping that the Droid Turbo would arrive in other carriers and retailers.

NBA News 2015: Durant Possibly Out for the Season, Is Westbrook Enough for the Playoffs?

oklahoma city thunder (Photo: Reuters/Jeff Haynes)

Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook (0) and Kevin Durant (35) celebrates after a made basket against the Chicago Bulls during the first second of their NBA basketball game in Chicago, Illinois, November 8, 2012.

Christian Post Report – After being sidelined for almost a month due to injury, Kevin Durant has been rumored to miss the rest of the season.

According to a report by ESPN, Thunder general manager Sam Presti made the announcement Friday, confirming the team’s fear of entering the playoffs shorthanded. In the statement, Presti confirmed that Durant has been “removed from basketball activities,” and that includes practicing with his teammates.

“He’s not making the progress we’d hoped or expected,” said the Thunder General Manager.

The statement came a day after the team decided not to allow the superstar to practice. In the report, the reigning MVP has been experiencing soreness in his surgically repaired right foot.

Durant, who is among the top scorers in the league this season, averages 25.4 points, 6.6 boards and 4.1 assists in his 27 played games.

However, Durant’s right foot has been experiencing pain, and on Feb. 23, it underwent surgery.

During the pre-season, Durant also underwent surgery due to a Jones’ fracture in his right foot. Unfortunately, he still continued experiencing soreness and pain.

In spite of Durant’s absence, Oklahoma City is still doing good as it holds a one-game advantage in the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Point guard Russell Westbrook is taking over games and carrying the Thunder team on his back in order to make it to the playoffs.

As for the timeline of Durant’s return to form, Thunder coach Scott Brooks states a “week or two.”

Still, it might take time before the reigning MVP suits up for OKC.

“Unless he’s able to be back on the floor without soreness, he won’t be back on the floor,” Presti said.

LG G Flex 2

Christian Post Report – Before 2014 ended, LG announced an Android-powered smartphone with a unique feature – animated eyes.

Since its initial launch, the LG AKA has only been available in South Korea. However, it seems LG is looking to make a big splash in the international market as well.

According to a report by Phone Arena, the Android handset will soon become available in the international market. Some countries that will be getting the device in a few weeks include Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Singapore and Turkey.

While the LG AKA may look like an ordinary phone, it transforms instantly when placed on a specially designed phone case. Its main selling point is the animated eyes that appear and “interact” with the consumers.

Some of the things that the “eyes” react on include incoming calls, appointments or meetings, and messages.

Apple MacBook 2015: New Ultraportable Laptop Mocked by PC Brands

12" MacBook with Retina Display Apple

On March 9, Apple finally announced its newest ultraportable laptop.

Christian Post Report – Several days ago, Apple launched its brand new ultraportable laptop, the MacBook 2015. No it isn’t the MacBook Air, or a slimmer MacBook Pro – it is an entirely new lineup for the Cupertino manufacturer.

The new laptop’s main selling point is portability and power, highlighted by the new Intel Core M chipsets that are running the show for the MacBook. These chips enable the device to be much thinner than the already thin MacBook Air.

However, in spite all the bells and whistles the new MacBook is getting from critics and consumers, some PC brands are not impressed at all.

According to a report by BGR, several PC manufacturers have launched attacks at Apple on social media.

Asus flaunted its ZenBook UX305 that boasts an even slimmer 12.3mm thickness compared to the new MacBook’s 13.1mm, which is unbelievably thin in its own right as well.

In the same fashion, Dell boasted the “infinity display” of its new XPS 13 that houses 5.7 million pixels. In its tweet, it claims that number is almost 2 million pixels better than the MacBook’s 12-inch Retina display.

Last on the list is Lenovo, who bashed Apple for placing only a single port on either side of the new MacBook. In contrast, its Yoga 3 Pro which was announced last year, is not only slightly thinner, it also boasts two USB ports and a touch screen display.

However, no matter what these PC makers say, most Apple fans are still happy that their beloved manufacturer has finally heard their cries in launching a newly designed and improved laptop.

Some of the changes that will come with the new Apple laptop is its USB C port that serves both as a USB port and a charging socket as well. There is also a headphone jack on the other side of the device.

Meanwhile, the glowing Apple logo is no more, and in its place is a metallic logo that resembles that of the iPad. It will also come in a number of colors like gray, silver and gold – just like other Apple devices.

Church of England to Invest Close to $1,000,000 to Help Christians Reconcile Beliefs With Science

Church of England (Photo: Reuters/Phil Noble)

Members of the clergy enter York Minster before a service to consecrate Reverend Libby Lane as the first female bishop in the Church of England, in York, northern England, January 26, 2015.

Christian Post Report – The Church of England is set to invest £700,000 in a new program that aims to promote greater engagement between Christian leaders and the scientific community.

The creation of the initiative, which will be part of a three-year Durham University program, was announced during British Science Week, a 10-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and math that concludes on March 22.

The program will offer trainee priests and others access to resources on contemporary science, and will also research attitudes toward science from church leaders. Durham University professor Rev. David Wilkinson spoke out about the divide between faith and science during a recent interview with The Christian Post.

“Our personal motivation was to ask: how do we give confidence to Christian leaders in a world where there are many questions which impact theology,” Wilkinson told CP on Friday.

“Our hunch, brought out by an initial pilot project, was that many Christian leaders at a senior level leading churches would often see science as a threat, and not see it as an opportunity to engage people with their interest in the really big questions: [such as], where the universe comes from, what does it mean to be human, are we unique, are we alone, and what’s the future for technology.”

The program is aimed at giving confidence and resources to clergy that will allow them to engage with these questions at a respectable level, according to Wilkinson.

Within the program research will be conducted analyzing the attitudes toward science amongst 1,000 church leaders in the U.K. There will also be a series of conferences for leaders — such as bishops and others — that will focus around questions such as origins of existence, cosmology, neuroscience, and the complexity of how God works in the world. The leaders will be exposed to leading scientists in these fields, including Christians and non-Christians.

“We’ll actually take the science seriously,” said Wilkinson. “And reflect on what it means for theology.”

Other initiatives in the program include equipping people training to be church leaders and the replicating of a successful U.S. program that supports scientists in local congregations who want to use their gifts to enable Christians to think about some of these topics.

The Church of England hopes to change Christians’ attitudes toward science with the program and give them the resources to engage those asking the tough questions.

Several leading names in science, such as atheist Richard Dawkins, view science as incompatible with religion and faith, and even label those who are religious as delusional in works such as his book The God Delusion.

“The rise of new atheism, as exemplified in Richard Dawkins and other thinkers, is probably very complex and has to do with a whole number of movements within our culture. But certainly, there is a fear and aggressiveness in some parts of the church, which has bought into the conflict model that science and religion are constantly in battle,” said Wilkinson.

“Actually, you’ve got to be on one side of the conflict or the other. That’s something the new atheism has talked about in general. The triumph of science over religion. But it’s all based on this conflict model.”

Wilkinson believes the church does not need to buy into this “conflict model.” By looking back at history he explained how science and faith were viewed at one time as compatible by most.

He also works as an astrophysicist and talked about how science has tough questions that only God can provide the answers to, such as where the laws of physics come from and why they seem intelligent to humans.

“These are questions that lie beyond sciences ability to answer, but are raised by the very discoveries of the origin of the universe that a number of us have been involved in,” he continued.

Ultimately, Wilkinson hopes this program will help to put the conflict model to rest, which he believes fuels new atheism and a form of Christianity that rejects valid scientific discoveries.
