Were Jesus and John the Baptist Competitors? ‘Finding Jesus’ Professor Describes Their Relationship

The new documentary series “Finding Jesus: Faith Fact Forgery” delves into the historical proof for Jesus and other figures in the New Testament, including John the Baptist.

In a recent interview with CNN, Candida Moss, a professor of New Testament and early Christianity at the University of Notre Dame who appears in the series, discussed historical proof for John the Baptist along with his relationship with his cousin, Jesus of Nazareth.

When asked if there was any division between the followers of Jesus and the followers of John, she responded by explaining how their relationship might’ve been in the ancient context.

“One of the interesting things about the relationship between Jesus and John the Baptist is that John doesn’t lay down his tools and follow Jesus after he baptizes Him. Nor, it seems, did John’s disciples. They had separate ministries and, while there may have been contact between the two groups, they were also de facto competitors in the ancient religious marketplace,” Moss told CNN.

She also explained that Jesus’ followers had to differentiate themselves from John by explaining that Jesus’ baptism was better, countering the prevalent idea that Jesus was actually John raised from the dead. The Bible references people who believe Jesus is actually John the Baptist due to their similar ministries.

An example of this would be in Matthew 16 when Jesus asks His disciples who people say that He is. They respond by saying that some believe He’s John the Baptist.

Moss was also questioned about extra biblical evidence for John the Baptist where she cited the works of Josephus.

“Actually, there is external attestation for the life and importance of John the Baptist. This is important because it’s fairly rare to find this kind of evidence for ancient figures outside the writings of their followers. The Jewish historian Josephus mentions John the Baptist in his book, “The Jewish Antiquities,” said Moss.

“Josephus describes John as a ‘good man’ who possessed ‘virtue’ and had ‘great influence’ over the people.”

CNN’s “Finding Jesus: Faith Fact Forgery” debuted on March 1. The first investigation in the series examined the Shroud of Turin, which is believe by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus during his crucifixion. The series will also examine other biblical figures, including Mary Magdalene and Judas.

The series is actually based on a book by author David Gibson titled Finding Jesus: Faith Fact Forgery: Six Remarkable Objests That Tell the Remarkable Story of the Gospels. He recently told The Christian Post that the series will not seek to debunk the historical Jesus, but rather provide common ground for skeptics and believers using artifacts.

“We want to move beyond anyone’s agenda, and we actually think these artifacts can be a kind of common ground between skeptics and believers — a place where you can bring the eyes of reason, whether you are a person of faith or not,” Gibson told CP. “It can be a shared pilgrimage of sorts to a deeper understanding. Or findings may not convince skeptics or prove the case for believers, but there’s potential for a real, constructive conversation rather than an argument.”

‘Overwatch’ News: 2 New Characters Revealed, Beta to Start Late 2015

Overwatch YouTube/Screenshot

Blizzard Entertainment’s only first person shooter multiplayer game “Overwatch” has yet to get a release date, but that doesn’t stop the developers from revealing new characters and new features of the upcoming game and making demos available at game conferences such as the recently concluded PAX East.

Christian Post Report – According to gaming sites, the game’s beta is due to start this autumn, without a definite release date in sight.

Blizzard Entertainment is known for action role-playing games such as the “Diablo” series and strategy games such as “Warcraft” and “Starcraft.” “Overwatch” is Blizzard’s latest original game in development after the “Diablo” and “Warcraft.” The upcoming game, according to Digital Spy is “a team-based multiplayer shooter and Blizzard’s first all-new property in 17 years.”

“Overwatch” as described in the game’s IGN wiki, is “an elite international task force charged with ending the war and restoring liberty to all nations.”

Prior to the game’s beta, the company revealed two new characters who will part of the “Overwatch” team of characters. The first one is a gunslinger named McCree and the game’s “first female tank” called Zarya. McCree is fashioned after a cowboy and according to Polygon, “he uses a Peacemaker handgun and has abilities that include the ability to reload during a roll, toss a flashbang attack of sorts, and deadeye, which slowly locks in all visible targets.”

Zarya, on the other hand, is Blizzard’s response to a call for more diverse characters. Zarya is not the typical game heroine with a slim body and a catsuit. She is a championship weight lifter who decided to join the fight to protect humanity. Her weapon is a particle cannon that either “shoot a short stream or lob explosives.” She can also create a Gravity Well which “sucks all enemies on screen in a single spot.” These new characters join 12 characters who were introduced earlier on.

The Polygon report also talks about a new map called Watchpoint Gibraltar, which is “both a new play space for players, but also a map that provides a touch of insight into the game’s backstory.”

The game is being developed for PC, for both Windows and OS X devices. The company has not divulged if console versions are being developed as well.

Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos celebrates his goal against Real Sociedad during their Spanish first division soccer match at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, January 31, 2015.

The Portuguese star scored in the 26th minute, while the Brazilian capped things off in the 79th.

Madrid dominated possession throughout the match, holding on to the ball 63 percent of the time. As a result, they were able to attempt eight total shots, converting on their only two that were on target.

Schalke only managed six shots on goal, and despite having four on target could not beat goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

It was also a very physical contest, with 25 total fouls, and four yellow cards – one on Madrid’s Toni Kroos and three Schalke players namely Kevin Boateng, Roman Neustadter and Jan Kirchhoff.

With this return leg to be played at the Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid hold a big advantage.

However, things have not been up to their standards lately as they have failed to win in their last two matches across all competitions.

They drew against Villarreal and lost to Athletic Bilbao in the La Liga, surrendering the lead to Barcelona in the process.

As for Schalke, they are fifth in the Bundesliga and recently ended their four-match winless run with a 3-1 win over Hoffenheim.

The German club will surely try to take advantage of Madrid’s misfortunes if they want to advance to the next round of the Champions League.

Klaas Jan-Huntelaar leads the club in goals scored in the competition with three, but will need help as no other player in the squad has scored more than once so far.

For Madrid, Ronaldo leads the goal-scoring tally with six, while Karim Benzema has also found the touch with five in the competition.

‘The Walking Dead’ Cast News: Melissa McBride Talks Undercover Strategy and the Threat Inside Alexandria

Melissa McBride as Carol in AMC’s “The Walking Dead”

Christian Post Report – Rick and and the rest of the group in the hit post-apocalyptic drama TV series “The Walking Dead” have found a home in Alexandria. Or have they?

Cast member Melissa McBride, who plays Carol, talked about the show – her character being part of the Alexandrian people and her going undercover. McBride said that like the fans, she too became quite suspicious with how the seemingly perfect town appears to be.

“It was kind of like, ‘Now tell me this again? You’re building a city in the middle of the town where we shoot?’ I know that area, it’s just beautiful. I asked where base camp would be, and it was right there. I was like, ‘Wow, this is convenient and clean. Where’s this going? Hmm.’ It was kind of exciting but the comfort was just … weird. As weird as it was for these characters,” she told Variety.

After what the group has been through, it’s quite understandable for the survivor to feel quite a bit apprehensive with the town’s peaceful and perfect situation. But in order to find out the truth, she must go undercover.

“After all we’ve been through, this could be a really good way for her to find out what’s going on (in Alexandria) and to be the kind of person nobody sees as a threat,” she said.

She went on to dish out that just like their previous encounters with the Terminus community, it’s really the people, not the walkers, who can be the greatest threat to their lives.

“There’s still a threat out there, and not just the walkers. People can be the biggest threat,” she explained.

“The Walking Dead” continues to air this Suday at 9 p.m. on AMC.

Christian Post Report – Latest “Gotham” Season 1 cast news pointed out the character Fish Mooney to exit in the upcoming second season of the show and one essential Batman character to be introduced in an upcoming episode.

A report from website Daily Mail indicated that Jada Pinkett-Smith won’t be returning to play the fan-favorite mobster character when the second season of the popular crime-fighting TV show hits the small screen.

Speaking with the hosts of Live! With Kelly and Michael on Friday, Will Smith’s wife said that despite the soaring TV ratings of Gotham, it would be unlikely that her Fish Mooney will come back.

It was also found out during the interview that Fish Mooney was specifically created for the introductory season of the TV adaptation and that it can’t be found in the Batman comic book canon.

She adds that she had contributed a lot of creative input in the development of the fearless gangster.
