The 10 Most Popular Worship Songs in Churches Last Year Were …

Pat Barrett’s song Build My Life and Hillsong Worship’s What a Beautiful Name were the most popular worship songs within churches in 2019, while Sinach’s Waymaker could make the list for 2020, according to a new report.

Faithlife Proclaim, a church presentation software from Faithlife, released data Wednesday showing the most popular worship songs of 2019 from the users of the software.

The 10 most-sung worship songs of 2019 were, in order:

  1. Build My Life, Pat Barrett
  2. What A Beautiful Name, Hillsong Worship
  3. This is Amazing Grace, Phil Wickham
  4. 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord), Matt Redman
  5. Great Are You Lord, All Sons & Daughters
  6. Who You Say I Am, Hillsong Worship
  7. How Great is Our God, Chris Tomlin
  8. Good, Good Father, Chris Tomlin
  9. In Christ Alone, Stuart Townend, Brian Getty, Kristian Stanfill, Passion
  10. Living Hope, Phil Wickham

“While Faithlife Proclaim’s assets are vast, one of its most fascinating features to me is how it tracks this data of worship music in real-time,” said Faithlife CEO and founder Bob Pritchett. “It’s enriching to be able to witness similarities and differences in worship preferences between all types of churches, as it serves a reminder that no matter which songs or artists we prefer to sing, we are all one in Christ Jesus.”

The data also revealed that more than half of the Top 10 songs were written prior to 2019 – the oldest song on the list (In Christ Alone)…

Willow Creek Confirms Abuse Allegations Made by Hybels’ Mentor

Willow Creek Confirms Abuse Allegations Made by Hybels’ Mentor

Willow Creek Community Church has confirmed another allegation of sexual harassment—this one against former senior pastor Bill Hybels’ mentor, Dr. Gilbert Bilezikian or “Dr. B.,” according to Christianity Today.

In a Facebook post shared over the weekend, a church member accused Dr. B. of kissing, fondling, and pressuring her with sex between 1984 and 1988. The Willow Creek Elder Board confirmed the allegations in a post online on Tuesday night.

“Over the past years, behavior has been brought to light that is both harmful and unacceptable for a Christ-follower,” said the statement. “This sinful behavior that we believe was demonstrated by Dr. Bilezikian and Bill Hybels was wrong, and we hold any person entrusted with leading at Willow Creek Community Church to a higher standard.

“The team believed the woman’s claim that Dr. Bilezikian engaged in inappropriate behavior dating back to the mid-eighties, including but not limited to hand-holding, hugs, kissing, inappropriate touching, and sending overly personal communication.”

Though Bilezikian was never on staff at the church, he was influential in its inception. “There would be no Willow Creek without Gilbert Bilezikian,” Hybels said in an interview with Christianity Today in 2000.

Hybels reportedly drove to Bilezikian’s house while a student at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and told the professor: “Dr. B., you…

C. S. Lewis was baptized today: The transforming power of mentors

God used C. S. Lewis to change my life.

I became a Christian as a teenager but brought all my
intellectual questions to my new faith. I was the person in tenth-grade Sunday
school asking how we know the Bible is truly the word of God and why Jesus is
the only way to heaven. Because others didn’t seem to have my questions, I
assumed that something was wrong with my faith.

Then I met the writings of C. S. Lewis.

A friend gave me a copy of Lewis’s classic book, Mere
Christianity
. I read it cover to cover and treasure it still. It was the
first time I had encountered a Christian who was willing to ask hard questions
about the faith. He became a mentor to me and remains so today.

I didn’t know, however, that Lewis had his own mentors.

For instance, he was baptized as an infant on this day in
1899 at St. Mark’s in Belfast by his grandfather, the Reverend Thomas Hamilton.
Rev. Hamilton died in 1905, never knowing the global significance of his
grandson’s future ministry.

J. R. R. Tolkien, famous for The Hobbit and Lord
of the Rings
, was instrumental in Lewis’ return to belief in God. Not long
after, Lewis came to faith in Christ as the Son of God.

The “Inklings,” a group at Oxford University that
gathered to discuss literature and encourage each other’s writings, became a
source of enormous support for Lewis. The writings of George MacDonald were
instrumental in his faith and worldview. Father Walter Frederick Adams, an
Anglican priest, served as Lewis’ private confessor and spiritual mentor.

My point is that God uses all of us to encourage all of us
on the journey of faith and ministry. The “body of Christ” is made of
individual members that work together for a collective good greater than the
sum of the parts (1 Corinthians 12:27).

If each of us will do what only we can do, together we will
do what all of us can do.

Who functioned in your life and faith as C. S. Lewis has in
mine?

Whose faith…

Jerry Falwell Jr., W.Va. Governor Invite Discontent Virginians to Secede, Join West Virginia

Jerry Falwell Jr., W.Va. Governor Invite Discontent Virginians to Secede, Join West Virginia

The Governor of West Virginia has invited disgruntled residents of the state of Virginia to buck their liberal government and join his state instead. The bizarre invitation was delivered via a joint press conference with Liberty University’s president, Jerry Falwell Jr. on Tuesday and would require that dissatisfied Virginia counties act on an 1862 standing invitation to join the West.

“If you’re not happy where you’re at, come on down,” Governor Jim Justice said at the presser, according to Fox News. “If you’re not truly happy where you are, we stand with open arms to take you from Virginia or anywhere you may be. We stand strongly behind the Second Amendment, and we stand strongly for the unborn.”

In November, the Democrats regained control of the Virginia General Assembly for the first time in a decade and quickly pledged a series of laws seeking to expand abortion access and tighten gun control.

Virginia’s governor, Ralph Northam, faced fierce criticism last year after suggesting that newborn babies could be left to die if the mother expressed a wish for it to be aborted during labor. The shocking remarks prompted a nationwide debate over late-term abortion.

“While Governor…

Tennis Players Petition for Sports Arena to Be Renamed over Margaret Court’s Christian Views

Tennis Players Petition for Sports Arena to Be Renamed over Margaret Court’s Christian Views

Two legendary tennis players are calling for the renaming of Australia’s Margaret Court Arena due to the namesake’s biblical views on marriage and sexuality.

John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova held an on-court protest Tuesday and unfurled a banner after their legends doubles match, urging officials to remove Margaret Court’s name off the arena that hosts Australian Open matches.

Like McEnroe and Navratilova, Court is a tennis legend, having won the most women’s Grand Slam singles titles (24) in the history of the sport and the most Grand Slam titles among all disciplines (64) when including doubles and mixed doubles.

But Court, 77, is now a Pentecostal pastor. In 1995 she founded a church, Victory Life Centre, where she serves as senior pastor.

McEnroe and Navratilova held a banner reading, “Evonne Goolagong Arena” – their suggestion for the arena’s new name. Goolagong is an Australian who won seven Grand Slam women’s singles titles.

Navratilova then climbed in the umpire’s chair and addressed the crowd.

“I’ve been speaking out about an issue for a while now and John McEnroe is here to join me and push the conversation forward,” she said before the television feed was cut off, according to CNN.

Court’s outspoken views on marriage and sexuality have stirred controversy. She opposes same-sex marriage and believes sex is reserved for…

Jack Ma, China’s wealthiest man, donates $14.4 million for coronavirus vaccine: The power of resourced influence

Jack Ma is the founder of Alibaba, the world’s largest
retailer and e-commerce company. His success has made him the richest man in
China with an estimated net worth of $38 billion.

He announced today that he has donated one hundred million yuan ($14.4 million) through his foundation to help find a vaccine for the Wuhan coronavirus. He has earmarked $5.8 million for two Chinese government research organizations, with the remainder to be used to support “prevention and treatment” measures.

Ma’s donation follows an announcement on Saturday that
Alibaba is setting up a one billion-yuan ($144 million) fund to buy medical
supplies for the Chinese provinces at the epicenter of the virus outbreak. The
company is also offering free AI computing power to scientific research
organizations working on a vaccine or treatments.

The power of resourced influence

Jack Ma’s capacity to give is obviously larger than that of
nearly every other human on the planet. Nonetheless, his example reminds us of
this fact: we all have influence we can leverage for the common good. The
question is less how much we have and more how much we are willing to give what
we have.

When C. S. Lewis was asked how much a Christian should
donate to charitable causes, he responded: “I do not believe one can
settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give
more than we can spare.”

When Jesus was asked which commandment in the Jewish law was
greatest, he responded with the Great Commandments to love our Lord and our
neighbor (Matthew 22:37–39). His word translated “love” in the Greek
New Testament is agape, the unconditional commitment to put the other
first. We “love” God when we put him first. We “love” our
neighbor “as ourselves” when we put our neighbor first.

What influence has God entrusted to you?

How will you serve someone in need by giving more than you
can spare today?

039Expropriation Without Compensation039 South Africa039s Land Grab Policy Leads to Lawlessness and Violence

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA – Rising violence in South Africa has become a major concern for travelers after the US State Department issued a travel advisory in December. But it isn’t just petty theft that is the problem. Some South Africans say the government itself is encouraging lawlessness.

South African farmers Mariandra Heunis and her husband Johann were asleep when the 32-year-old mother of three woke up to a scary sound.

“I heard what the police explained to me later was the cocking of the gun, and I sat up straight and the two attackers were standing at my feet with a gun pointed at me and I started screaming,” Heunis told CBN News. “And my husband woke up, and we explained to them that we don’t have money in the house but they can take anything they want. Then they shot Johann five times, right next to me.

The men executed her husband in cold blood. But they weren’t finished.

“So when they demanded to take me downstairs, we had a little struggle, and I refused. Because I know when they take you aside they normally rape you and then you get killed. At that point, my little girl put her hand up and said ‘You want money? I’ve got money in my piggy bank. You can take my piggy bank. Just leave my mommy alone,” Heunis continued.

Farmers Say Violence Encouraged by the Government

Inexplicably the men left without doing any more harm or robbing the house. It was another brutal murder in a series of attacks on predominantly white farmers in South Africa, which some say are being encouraged by the government.

“We have very senior government officials who publicly sing songs about killing farmers,” said Ernst Roets, who heads Afriforum, a civil rights organization based in Pretoria.

“They would say, well, this minority community, they have all the wealth, and it’s because they stole everything from you and they exploited you,” Roets explained.

“Your chances of being murdered if you are a farmer is twice as high as if you are a police officer in South Africa. Which clearly shows that there’s a very serious problem,” he said.

Farmers and businesses are now forced to hire private security companies for protection. Ian Cameron leads one such team. He is the head of community safety for Afriforum.

“We make sure that our community structures and that our members in the region and that their property is kept safe and, for example, are not burned down,” Cameron said. “In the last three years several farms were set on fire and we need to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

Expropriation without Compensation

The South African Government has over 42 million acres of land that’s publicly owned. That means it could give every south African family over two and a half acres of their own property if it wanted to. But instead, it’s been pushing this idea of expropriation without compensation, which means taking land away from farmers who have title and deed to their land – some of whom have been on their property for generations. And that’s causing some serious unrest. One of the problems is that people have decided they’re going to go and claim their land right away, which means they are moving onto people’s land and squatting, trespassing, and setting up houses and even whole villages on people’s farms.

“For the past two to three years, the expropriation without compensation issue has become a major topic in the public debate,” Cameron said. “Since that has happened we’ve seen a drastic increase in illegal land occupation, in fact, what we’ve recorded is more than 110 cases since January 2019 where land is being illegally occupied. A lot of it is state land and other times it’s private [land].”

The promise of free land is causing another problem – massive illegal migration.

“Now you’ve got literally millions of illegal immigrants coming across our borders, our borders are not protected at all,” Cameron explained.

Social welfare doesn’t exist in very many countries in Africa. Just north of Pretoria sits a slum that is inhabited by several thousand people, many of them are illegal immigrants who have come in from other African countries. And the reason they come to South Africa is to work on the farms and because the women can get money for the babies born in South Africa in the form of a stipend. And they actually live on that stipend, which is creating a large number of illegal migrants coming south across the border in order to take advantage of those welfare programs.

I think the risk is that these people are clogging up the health system and local people are being left behind,” said Cameron.

Some Claim South African Government “Losing Control”

The massive wave of migrants has caused a backlash of violent riots and protests across the country, which is yet another reason many believe the South African government is losing control.

“We don’t have a decent police reservist structure so communities are being left to fend for themselves,” Cameron explained. “And that’s when they turn to places like Afriforum, where we train them how to act within the framework of the law, what they need to do, how they can defend themselves and that’s how we move forward.”

Liberty University’s Debate between Religious Liberals and Conservatives Hits a Snag

Liberty University’s Debate between Religious Liberals and Conservatives Hits a Snag

(RNS) — Plans for a proposed debate between liberal Christian leaders and representatives from Liberty University, a theologically conservative evangelical Christian school, have stalled, with participants unable to agree on a topic or a date for the event.

The Rev. Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, a North Carolina pastor slated to participate in the event, suggested Liberty University had backtracked.

“It seems Charlie Kirk and Jerry Falwell want to launch a center and fire people up about the dangers of an imagined socialism, but when they publicly challenged us and we said we would be glad to pay our own way to come and make the biblical case for taxing corporate wealth to address real human needs, they aren’t willing to back up their tweets,” he told Religion News Service in a text.

Liberty spokesman Scott Lamb disagrees.

He told RNS the school wants to hold the debate — which was originally planned for the spring — but prefers to push it until after the Democratic and Republican conventions this summer.

“I think it’s a lot more interesting conversation after the RNC and DNC have their conventions and draft their platforms,” he said.

Talk of a debate between liberal faith leaders and representatives from Liberty first emerged in November 2017, when Wilson-Hartgrove and the Rev. William J. Barber II, co-chair of the activist group The Poor People’s Campaign,…

Georgetown University Bans Student Group’s Attempt to Hold Demonstration of First-Trimester Abortion on Campus

Georgetown University, the oldest Catholic university in the United States, has thwarted a student group’s attempt to hold a first-trimester abortion demonstration on campus.

Organized by the New York-based Reproductive Health Access Project, the “Papaya Workshop” features an abortionist who shows students an example of how vacuum aspiration abortions are performed by using a papaya as a uterus model in which the inner pulp and seeds are suctioned out by a suction machine.

The event was originally planned to be held at Georgetown’s Intercultural Center. However, University officials intervened and compelled the campus student group hosting the RHAP abortion workshop to move it off campus.

The university said in a statement that the abortion workshop wouldn’t be allowed on campus because it conflicts with the academic institution’s religious identity.

“Consistent with our Catholic and Jesuit identity, Georgetown University does not support or allow for the demonstration or training of abortion procedures in any classroom or reservable space on our campus,” Georgetown administration said, according to The College Fix.

“The student organizers of this event were notified that the Papaya Workshop is not permitted to take place in reservable campus spaces.”

The liberal student group H*yas for Choice, which was organizing the RHAP abortion workshop, denounced the university’s decision as a “violation of Georgetown’s Free Speech Policy and their recent timing as a deliberate action to prevent us from providing information about reproductive health to the student body.”
