Hallmark Channel Is ‘Open’ to Making Movies with Same-Sex Couples, CEO Says

The CEO of the Hallmark Channel’s parent company says the network is “open” to movies about same-sex couples, although he did not say anything is in the works.

Bill Abbott, the CEO of Crown Media Family Networks, told the Hollywood Reporter’s podcast, TV’s Top 5, that the Hallmark Channel has grown more diverse in recent years with African American leads and stories about Jewish couples.

Lesley Goldberg of The Hollywood Reporter asked Abbott: “Have you talked about incorporating stories about same-sex couples at Christmas or Hanukkah or Kwanzaa? Is that something that’s on your radar as you look to maybe broaden out some of what your programming is?”

“We look at a variety of different things,” Abbott responded, “so we’re always looking for the best stories that we think will resonate in the best way. And so we’re open to really any type of movie of any type of relationship in any space.”

Goldberg, who is lesbian, asked Abbott if the Hallmark Channel’s goal was “more about attracting a big audience” or about “trying to be inclusive.”

“I would love to have a Christmas movie with a same-sex couple on there,” she said, adding that her relatives watch the Hallmark Channel.

“My wife and I are not reflected on anything that you guys are doing,” Goldberg said.

“In terms of broadening out the demographic,” Abbott said, “it’s something…

Christians urged to stop volunteering in orphanages as it does more harm than good

Ahead of International Volunteer day on Thursday, Home for Good’s the Homecoming project is releasing a short film to encourage Christians in the UK to rethink orphanage volunteering, arguing that it reinforces trauma and abandonment for institutionalised children.

Founding director of the charity, Dr Krish Kandiah, said “Children living in orphanages have suffered the trauma of having been separated from their parents. This often causes attachment difficulties or disorders, where children may be overly affectionate towards complete strangers, forming unnaturally quick and unhealthy bonds.”

“Many orphanages rely on a steady stream of volunteers and the generosity of donors, who are usually well-meaning and genuinely want to help vulnerable children. But unfortunately, good intentions do not automatically result in best practice.”

“Christians have long been supporters of pioneering and innovative projects and the Church has been at the forefront of caring for vulnerable children. It is time for a new wave of innovation to see children in institutions come home to family. The first step we can take is to ensure we do not exacerbate poor practice in our giving and our going.”

A ComRes poll of over 6,000 British adults found that regular churchgoers are seven times more likely to visit or volunteer in an overseas orphanage than other British adults.

Shadow chancellor says level of Britain’s inequality does not reflect ‘a country with Christian roots’

Speaking in Birmingham, the senior Labour figure said: “On Tuesday a new Shelter report found 135,000 children will be without a home this Christmas.

“On the same day an analysis by the Equality Trust showed the UK’s six richest people control as much wealth as the poorest 13 million. It all went to show just how unequal our society is.

“It’s three weeks to Christmas. The celebration of the birth of Jesus.

“Children going hungry and homeless in the fifth largest economy in the world begs the question: are we really living up to the values of Christianity – or any other of our religions or beliefs for that matter?

“We don’t believe it’s enough to offer people a hand-up out of poverty. We want to abolish poverty.

“That’s why we committed in our manifesto to abolishing in-work poverty within five years.”

Mr McDonnell also accused the Conservatives of lying about the Hillsborough disaster.

He added: “This election campaign began for me in Liverpool, the city of my birth. Only last week, the people of that city were forced to relive again the trauma of the Hillsborough disaster.

“The memory of a previous Conservative government and how it treated the north, midlands, Wales and Scotland – football fans, and the working class.

“I remember the Hillsborough tragedy like it was yesterday. I remember the brave campaigners who have fought for justice ever since.

“I remember how…

Bishops encourage Catholics to confess ‘eco-sins’ as part of new environmental campaign

The Catholic Church is encouraging congregants to go to Confession, or “reconciliation services”.

It is part of an initiative to ensure that the Catholic Church plays a role in tackling the climate crisis.

The lay-run campaign, called Journey to 2030, was launched last weekend in partnership with the Bishops’ Conference and the Ecological Conversion Group, a volunteer group for young Catholics.

The initiative aims to “create a sense of urgency towards our ecological crisis and those suffering from its ill effects” as well as promote confession of environmental sins.

As a result, it has created a toolkit for church leaders to help Catholics confess their environment-related sins and is sending out its resources to parishes across the country.

Pope Francis said: “The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth. Many things have to change course, but it is we human beings above all who need to change. A great cultural, spiritual and educational challenge stands before us, and it will demand that we set out on the long path of renewal.”

‘The Journey to 2030’ says it aims to support the Catholic Church and it’s community to progress towards this ‘long path to renewal’, by providing the necessary resources to parishes and individuals in order to engage with the “urgent challenge of our ecological crisis”.

What is the word of the year? How to make ‘the most enduring impact you can leave on earth’

Dictionary.com has selected its word of the year for 2019: “existential.”

According to the site, “existential” is “often used when the fact of someone or something’s being—its very existence—is at stake. An existential threat to a species, for example, puts its continued existence in real, concrete peril.”

Dictionary.com chose the word because it has come up so often in internet searches this year, especially after news of mass shootings and natural disasters.

An article that explains a decade

Dictionary.com is right: much of the world is facing an existential crisis. A recent article by Washington Post columnist James Hohmann illustrates this fact powerfully. Looking back over the decade now ending, Hohmann reveals a striking international pattern of “discontent with authoritarian regimes.”

He begins with the resignation last Sunday of embattled Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi amid “sustained protests for sweeping reform.” More than 430 demonstrators have reportedly been killed in Iraq during two months of unrest. Thousands of protesters are still camped out in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square. Hohmann calls this “the biggest challenge to Iraq’s political order since the U.S.-led coalition toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.”

Next, he cites the Iranian regime’s use of “more violence than at any time since the Islamist revolution four decades ago to repress protests.” As many as 450 people, and possibly hundreds more, have reportedly been killed; another two thousand have been wounded; and seven thousand have been detained. An opposition leader is comparing this crackdown to the demonstration in 1978 that ignited the Islamic revolution.

In Lebanon, members of the military formed a human chain on Sunday to prevent violent clashes between rival protesters as a stalemate over forming a new government continues. In Hong Kong, tens of thousands of demonstrators marching peacefully on…

Israel Folau settles legal claim after sacking for anti-gay social media post

A joint statement from RA, NSWRU and Folau said the “post reflected Mr Folau’s genuinely held religious beliefs, and Mr Folau did not intend to harm or offend any person when he uploaded the social media post”.

It added: “Mr Folau wants all Australians to know that he does not condone discrimination of any kind against any person on the grounds of their sexuality and that he shares Rugby Australia’s commitment to inclusiveness and diversity. “

Rugby Australia said it does “not in any way agree with the content of the social media post”.

“Inclusiveness is one of rugby’s core values and it welcomes all people to the game, including all members of the LGBTI community,” the statement said.

The statement added that “Folau did not intend to hurt or harm the game of rugby and acknowledges and apologises for any hurt or harm caused.

Christmas celebrations cancelled for Iraqi Christians

The head of the Church, Patriarch Louis Raphael Sako, said the decision was made out of respect for those killed and wounded in recent anti-government protests, which have now been going on for three months.

“There will be no decorated Christmas trees in the churches or streets, no celebrations and no reception at the patriarchate,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Almost 430 people have died and 20,000 wounded in mass rallies that have been met with retaliation by security forces.

The protests have mostly being taking place in Shia Muslim-majority areas, but the Church said it would take part in an act of solidarity “out of respect for the dead and wounded among protesters and security forces, and in solidarity with the pains of their families”.

Iraq’s parliament formally accepted the prime minister’s resignation on Sunday,

Protesters are calling for a complete overhaul of the sectarian political system.

What to Expect if You’re a Church’s First Millennial Pastor ThomRainer.com

By Sam Rainer

A big wave is coming towards the church. It’s the swell of retiring Boomer pastors. Most Boomer pastors are currently between the ages of 50 and 68. They won’t all retire at once, so this wave won’t crash into the church like a tsunami. However, I don’t believe the North American church is prepared to replace these pastors. Here are a few implications of retiring Boomer pastors:

  •       There will be more pastoral vacancies than qualified candidates.
  •       Few churches are giving any thought to pastoral succession.
  •       There will be an abundance of qualified pastors for interim and bi-vocational positions.
  •       Some Boomer pastors will stay at their current positions into their late 60s and 70s.
  •       Some Boomer pastors will lead their churches to merge with another congregation.

I want to focus on what will happen when these pastors are inevitably replaced—more importantly, who will replace them. A new generation of leaders—Millennials—will inherit these church positions. I’m the oldest of the Millennial generation. Most date the birth of Millennials between 1980 and 2000. I barely make the cut as a February 1980 baby, but I connect with Millennials more than any other generation.

As Millennials begin to become senior pastors, their churches will have many Gen Xers, Boomers, and Builders. Of course, the percentages will eventually shift to churches full of older Millennials, but such a shift will take decades.

 I’ve been the first…

Kanye West Releases New ‘Closed on Sunday’ Music Video Featuring His Family

Kanye West Releases New ‘Closed on Sunday’ Music Video Featuring His Family

Over the holiday weekend, rapper Kanye West released his latest music video for “Closed on Sunday,” his pro-family song from his recent album Jesus is King.

The video opens with Kanye and his wife, Kim Kardashian West, holding their four children—6-year-old North, 3-year-old Saint, 1-year-old Chicago, and 6-month-old Psalm—nestled into a rock crevice. The two-and-a-half-minute video, recorded on West’s ranch in Wyoming, continues with the lyrics:

When you got daughters, always keep ‘em safe

Watch out for vipers, don’t let them indoctrinate

Closed on Sunday, you my Chick-fil-A

You’re my number one, with the lemonade

Raise our sons, train them in the faith

Through temptations, make sure they’re wide awake

Follow Jesus, listen and obey

No more livin’ for the culture, we nobody’s slave

Towards the end of the video, a smiling Kanye stands in the middle of the whole West-Kardashian family as the camera pans outward. The Sunday Choir then steps in to finish out the song, repeating the refrain: “Jezebel don’t have a chance.” A shot also shows Kanye on his knees in prayer.

Also featured in the video is West’s father, Ray West. The rapper and his father also appeared together in the “Follow God” music video.

Ray gave fatherly wisdom in the introduction of that video: “What does it mean to follow…
