Turkey to Build First-Ever Church in Its Modern Republic

Turkey to Build First-Ever Church in Its Modern Republic

Work on the first-ever church to be built in the modern Republic of Turkey will start next month.

Construction on the church will take about two years, according to The Christian Post.

The church is expected to serve Syriac Orthodox Christians. The church’s capacity is about 700 people. There are some 17,000 Syriac Orthodox Christians living in Istanbul.

“We’re proud of living under the Turkish flag in this land,” said Yusuf Cetin, the Syriac Orthodox Church’s metropolitan for Istanbul and Ankara.

While the country does have older churches, the Syriac Orthodox church will be the first one to be built in modern Turkey since the end of the Ottoman Empire in the 1920s.

“It is the first since the creation of the republic,” a government official said when plans for the church were announced in 2015. “Churches have been restored and reopened to the public, but no new church has been built until now.”

The church will be built in an area near the Ataturk International Airport.

Church offers £1,000 wedding for couples struggling with big day costs

St John the Baptist Church in Hartford in Cheshire will offer the ‘Grand Service’ to three couples in 2019 who otherwise would not be able to afford a church wedding.

The vicar, Rev Mike Smith told Premier’s News Hour: “It was an idea that came a few years ago now, when we had a couple who cancelled their wedding in church for cost reasons. That was followed by a couple more who did the same thing. It was about that time the Church of England decided to put a massive hike on its wedding fees and I felt uncomfortable with that and so began to put together a team of volunteers with the idea that we could do somebody’s whole day for an affordable price.”

The average cost of a wedding in the UK this year has now risen to over £30,000.

The offer at St John the Baptist includes an organist who will play for free, someone to make a two-tiered cake, a photographer, a lady who is offering dress alterations and flowers.

The package includes a catered reception in the Church Centre for up to 30 guests including a two course meal. A further 20 guests can be added at pro-rata cost.

Rev Mike said the church have been willing to chip-in with their gifts: “This is a group who very much share the belief that marriage is one of God’s great gifts and we want to help people get on that track”.

The church have had eight couples apply for the three dates this year, one of which…

Christian Mother, Pastor Fear for Their Lives after Attacks in Eastern Uganda

Christian Mother, Pastor Fear for Their Lives after Attacks in Eastern Uganda

NAIROBI, Kenya, January 11, 2019 (Morning Star News) – Muslims in eastern Uganda sent a Christian mother to the hospital with injuries from a beating in one village and tore down a church building in another, sources said.

Both the woman and the pastor of the destroyed church building fear their lives could be in danger.

Deborah Gimbo of Budaka town was attacked the afternoon of Dec. 20 while praying by herself in her home. She prays three evenings a week in her home with two other Christian women, and the assailants told her they did not want them praying loudly in Jesus’ name, Gimbo told Morning Star News.

“Today we have come to warn you that you should avoid noisy prayers and the use of Issa [Jesus] in your prayers,” the four assailants said as they intruded into her home at 2 p.m., according to Gimbo.

A local sheikh (teacher) had instructed the assailants that people who pray in Jesus’ name should be fought and pressured until they accept only worship of Allah, or else be killed, she said.

“I said, ’I cannot stop praying, and more so, Issa is my Lord and Savior, and I will continue praying in His name,’” Gimbo told Morning Star News. “Immediately two of the intruders left the house, and in no time entered the room again with sticks and started beating me. I was hit on my face, and blood started flowing down my face as I started…

While the dream is to see the Vatican flag at the Olympics opening ceremony, the team homes to soon compete in small competition soon.

Doctor Strange Director: Christians ‘Are the Core Problem’ in America

Doctor Strange Director: Christians ‘Are the Core Problem’ in America

A Hollywood director who is known for his faith and for his films about spirituality says Christians are the “core problem” in America.

Scott Derrickson, who directed The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Deliver Us From Evilas well as the more well-known Doctor Strange, made the comments this week on Twitter.

“American Christians have long loved their pop culture heroes. I have frustrated attempts to make me one because of this singular heart-felt conviction,” Derrickson wrote Monday. “… In America, we Christians are not the solution. We are the core problem.”

That sparked a debate on Twitter over what Derrickson meant. One person wrote to Derrickson: “I agree with your diagnoses and can appreciate the spirit of your resistance. Curious how you think those of us who are Christians who want to help fix the problem can best help turn the tide (even if the best answer is just to get out of the way)?”

Derrickson responded: “1. Reject Christian nationalism — it’s a straight-up heresy. 2. Read the gospels — Jesus was about aiding the poor, the judged,…

Bishop thankful to government for ‘listening’ on universal credit

A controversial plan to extend the two-child benefits cap retrospectively – affecting those born before April 2017 – is to be scrapped.

Work and pensions secretary Amber Rudd says she wants to “reset” the public perception of Universal Credit.

Speaking to Premier following the announcement, Bishop of Durham Rt Rev Paul Butler said it was good news for families and it showed that the government was listening to those concerned.

Calling for further action, he said: “I hope this also signals a willingness to look at the two child limit more fully.

“It’s a policy the Church of England have always had major questions about because it undervalues the life of every child.”

Currently families who have had their third child since April 2017 aren’t able to claim benefits for them.

Today’s announcement has been welcomed by Christian Labour MP Helen Goodman.

Speaking to Premier, she said: “I was the MP who led the rebellion against the legislation which was introduced in 2015. I think it’s wholly wrong and unjust to penalise these families with more than two children.”

Again calling for the government to go further, she said: “The decision is not absolutely perfect because it applies to children who were born before the change is made, not all future families. I don’t think there should be a cap at all in families that are having three or four children now.

“Families with a large…

U.S. Air Force Veteran Raises More than $20 Million to Build the Border Wall

U.S. Air Force Veteran Raises More than $20 Million to Build the Border Wall

U.S. Air Force veteran Brian Kolfage is on a mission to raise the funds needed to build a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border and in less than one month he has already raised more than $20 million.

On December 16, Kolfage created a GoFundMe page called “We the People Will Fund the Wall,” where he is asking the American people to help the government build the controversial border wall. Kolfage wrote, “If the 63 million people who voted for Trump each pledge $80, we can build the wall.”

Since the campaign began just under one month ago, 336,448 people have donated $20,132,662 for the wall. The campaign’s goal is to reach $1 billion, CBN News reports.

In an interview on Wednesday with Fox Business Network, Kolfage said the Democrats in Congress are only fighting against the wall because they want to control the vote and the people. He said, “They’re playing games. They want to have illegal aliens in this country so they can control the people, they want to control the votes, they want to control things.”

“It’s all political agenda,” he added.

Kolfage went on to say that Democrats saying the border wall is immoral is “Not what this country’s about.”

The U.S. military veteran said that he started this GoFundMe account because “We need to start protecting the American people.”

On the GoFundMe page, Kolfage wrote, “I have…

Lauren Daigle first ever female artist to be top 10 of both Christian and secular pop chart

The American artist’s song ‘You Say’ has reached number 34 in the Billbard top 40 in the US and has already spent 17 weeks at number one in the Christian Airplay chart.

The Christian chart tends to move less frequently but Daigle’s single has the longest running reign in the category’s history since it began 16 years ago.

However, it is in the ‘Adult pop songs’ chart that ‘You Say’ is at number 9 and has been in the chart for 14 weeks, making her the only female artist ever to be in the top 10 of both at the same time.

Only The Fray’s song ‘How To Save A Life’ has reached the same kind of widespread audience when they charted in 2006-7.

Lauren Daigle’s album ‘Look Up Child’ has remained number one of the Christian album chart for 15 weeks.

The singer received some criticism for her response to being asked about homosexuality last year but often gets praised for appealing to both Christians and non-Christians.

Business Boots Mom for Wearing Shirt with Definition of ‘Woman’

Business Boots Mom for Wearing Shirt with Definition of ‘Woman’

A young mother was kicked out of a United Kingdom pub in recent days after a patron complained that her t-shirt – which listed the definition of “woman” – was offensive.

Rebekah Wershbale, 34, entered the pub wearing a black t-shirt emblazoned with the words: “Woman. Noun. Adult human female.”

An employee at Five Clouds Tap and Bottle asked her to leave, saying she wasn’t welcome because her shirt was transphobic. The pub is located in Macclesfield.

“She told me that the t-shirt I was wearing was upsetting people because it was transphobic and not inclusive so I was barred,” Wershbale told the Daily Mail newspaper. “What she meant was that I was somehow offending men who say they are women because my t-shirt did not include them in the definition of a woman. There aren’t even any transgender staff or patrons at the pub.”

Wershbale supports Fair Play For Women, a group that opposes reforms to the Gender Recognition Act. The government is considering overhauling the act to allow people to change their gender to the one they self-identity. Doing this, Wershbale believes, “could put women’s safety at risk by allowing men who say they are female access to women-only spaces,” the newspaper reported.

David Davies, a member of Parliament, supports the mom and said the shutting down of free speech is “now spreading from our…

‘You could feel his pain’, prayers encouraged as Andy Murray announces retirement

He fought back tears as he announced he would retire this year, possibly after his next match.

He admitted difficulties in playing with a recurring hip problem but said he hopes to make Wimbledon in the summer, though he could not confirm that would be the case.

He’s been hailed as a “legend” by Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon while rival Rafa Nadal says the Scot doesn’t know how much he’ll be missed.

PA

Sports chaplain Carolyn Skinner who runs an outreach ministry at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships was one of millions who’ve watched his difficult press conference this morning,

Speaking to Premier, she said: “Watching it was heartbreaking – you could see how much it meant for him.

“Like many others I’ve grown to love watching him and seeing his personality come through.

“You could feel his pain, that heartache.”

PA

Calling on Christians to pray for him and other sports stars, she said: “It’s good to pray for people in the sporting world and particularly for their sense of identity and purpose.

“Obviously their sport is incredibly important to them, but pray they will discover who they are in Christ and that God has a purpose for them which is bigger.”
