The Roman poet Horace wrote: “Rule your mind, or it will rule you.”

The enemy wants your mind; he wants to control or influence as much of your thinking as possible, but you do not have to let him. The key to overcoming him is learning to discipline your thinking, and disciplining yourself to believe you are disciplined is the beginning.

As my son once said, “Discipline is a discipline!” Most people don’t get excited when the subject of discipline comes up. However, if you learn to understand the power, the liberty, the joy, and the victory discipline brings to your life, you will embrace it eagerly.

Prayer Starter: Father, Your Word says You have given me a spirit of discipline and self-control (see 2 Timothy 1:7 AMPC). Help me today to choose my thoughts carefully and purposely dwell on things that are positive and full of hope. Help me to discipline my thoughts, words and actions so I can enjoy the great future You have for me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Christmas is a very important time of year. It’s a time of year when the whole world is hearing the message of the birth of Jesus. It’s a time when people are tenderhearted…the perfect time to plant seeds of love in the lives of those you meet.

Sometimes those seeds may just take the form of a kind word in the middle of rush-hour shopping. Other times, you may get the opportunity to pray and minister to someone. But whatever the situation, keep a sharp eye out for even the smallest chance to assist people.

I’ve had some outstanding experiences giving a few dollars to someone in need. As they are taking the money, I tell them, “This money is from the Lord Jesus Christ. I serve Him. He is the One who instructed me to help you.”

It’s amazing how many people are ready to hear what you have to say when you say it in love. They’re starved for someone to really care. Be that someone this Christmas season. Spread the Word about the peace that’s available in Jesus. Tell about His goodwill toward men.

Who knows how many of those small seeds may one day take root and bring one more precious person into the glorious kingdom of God?

Topic: Christ Is Alive In Us [Andrew Wommack Devotional 11 December 2018]

John 19:30 “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”

When Jesus cried, “It is finished,” He was not referring to the whole plan of salvation as being completed. He still had to descend into the lower parts of the earth and lead the captives out (Eph. 4:8-9), as well as come back from the dead and ascend to the Father to make intercession for us (Heb. 7:25).

Paul made it very clear in 1 Corinthians 15:14 and 17, that if Jesus did not rise from the dead, then our faith is vain and we are yet in our sins.

Why is the resurrection so important? The resurrection of Jesus makes Christianity different from religion because we are dealing with a real, live person, not just principles. Christianity is fellowship with a real person who is alive.

Also, forgiveness of sins is not obtained by a doctrine, but by Christ Himself. If Jesus did not rise from the dead, He cannot give salvation to us. However, He did rise from the dead and now He lives forever to make intercession for us (Heb. 7:25).

It is Christ living in us that gives us power to live a victorious life. If there was no resurrection, there would be no power.

The resurrected life of Jesus is the guarantee of our physical regeneration.

Because Jesus conquered death, the fear and sting of death have been removed for us. This produces great comfort for those who believe.

So, faith in the present ministry of Jesus is essential to true Christianity, and would be impossible if Jesus was not alive. Without Jesus being alive, Christianity would be just another dead religion.

What is idolatry? Idolatry is anything that comes between us and God. Joshua told his people that their nation would be destroyed if they persisted in idolatry, and their souls would suffer eternal death. He said, “You must make your decision today. You must decide whether you want to serve the idols of this life, or the living God.” “Choose you this day,” said Joshua, “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” What about you? Are you taking your stand with Joshua? No matter what the cost? I am asking you to choose this day whom you will serve. Our families cannot choose Christ for us. Our friends cannot do it. God is a great God, but even God can’t make the decision for us. He can help, but only we can decide. We have to make our own choice.

Prayer for the day: Lord Jesus Christ, take away the idols in my life so that, completely undivided, I may serve You, my Savior.

MESSAGE:

People often mistake joy for happiness, but these two are very different. Happiness depends on circumstances and situations. If for example you are given a new pair of shoes, or you pass your exams in flying colours you are expected to be happy, and there is nothing wrong with that. However there is something much deeper that happiness and that is joy.

Joy is the deep-rooted gladness that is unstoppable, and not affected by changes in the circumstances and situations around; it can only be given by the Holy Spirit. Joy is a function of faith in God. This means that a deep knowledge of God’s Word will automatically give joy. How much of the Holy Spirit do you carry? How well do you know God? How much of His Word do you have on your inside? Do you have joy? Philippians 4:4 commands us to rejoice at all times no matter the situation, are you capable of doing this?

Prayer Point: Sweet Holy Spirit, please fill my heart with Your joy. Give me the grace to study your Word continuously that I may know you deeply.

The MESSAGE:

No man has ever accomplished anything great for God and sustained it without being a prayerful person. Elijah was a man of prayer. He had the lifestyle of being alone with God and enjoyed His presence. The reason his public ministry was full of results that glorified God was because he spent quality time in His presence and did only what He instructed him to do. He was a carrier of God’s presence, power and glory. Hence, he would say, “The LORD before whom I stand”.

Do you want to live a life worthy and pleasing to the Lord? You must be a prayer addict. Do you want to be a kingdom builder and God’s partner in the redemption project? You must be a prayer addict and the fire on your prayer altar must not go out. Do you want to fulfill the Great Commission and your personal ministry? Do you want to make great impact in your generation as a believer? You must love God’s presence and fellowship with Him day and night. That was the secret of Elijah’s exploit. It explains why he was unstoppable, unbeatable and indomitable. It also explains why he was a one man riot squad who challenged, confronted and defeated the prophets of Baal. Prayerful lifestyle was the reason he could turn the hearts of Israel back to God.

Beloved, your life is a project and the success you make of it depends on how well and often you travail in prayer to draw help, power and grace from heaven. Prayer warriors are God’s battle axes and weapons of war. They are God’s partners, change agents and game changers. Whatever assignment you have in your ministry, career, marriage, finances or any other area of life, consistent, effectual fervent prayer will bring down God’s power and glory that will make you a phenomenal success. Elijah’s life and achievements are eloquent testimonies to this truth. You have a master key called prayer. Use it to your advantage!

Text: 1 Samuel 20:35-42 (KJV)

Key Verse: “And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city“ (1 Samuel 20:42).

MESSAGE:

Genuine friendship can only thrive with loyalty, truthfulness, selflessness and sacrifice. Friendship, conjugal relationship and brotherly companionship with divine import and genuine impact are built on these worthy building blocks.

A story was told of a couple who was in a sinking cruise on the high seas. They managed to reach a life boat only to discover that there was only one space left. The wife conceded the space for the husband who jumped into the boat while the wife shouted only one sentence “take care of our child”. On the surface, it would look like an irrational decision but back home, the wife had been diagnosed with a terminal disease and the chance of the survival of their only child rested on the survival of the husband.

In our text, David had hinted his friend Jonathan that Saul, his father, had plotted to kill him (David). This was hard for Jonathan to believe hence he asked for time to verify this and they agreed on a sign from Jonathan to confirm or refute the suspicion. Jonathan was not only a dependable friend; he was also prompt, truthful, loyal and selfless. He did not aid his father’s bid to assassinate David his friend, even when it was ostensibly for Jonathan’s sake so that David would not compete with him for the throne.

In Jonathan, we find the ideal characteristics of friendship, devoid of hypocrisy, selfishness, tribal or fraternal biases, not blinded by jealousy, inordinate ambition and self-gratification. This wonderful virtue should be the desire of all who claim to love the Lord and want to see Him in the end.

Thought For The Day: A friend in need is a friend indeed.

Topic: The Truth about Your Healing [Seeds of Destiny 11 December 2018 Devotional]

Scripture: But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5

Thought For The Day: You are not a sick person trying to get healed; you are the person Jesus had already healed that the devil is trying to make sick.

The knowledge of truth is key to deliverance. Truth facilitates freedom. That is why it is important to know the truth about any venture that you undertake in life. There is nothing that sets free like the truth.

It is true that there are people who got healed and after a while, began to feel some symptoms again. This is because such people have not really grasped the truth about their healing.

Our anchor scripture tell us that …with His stripes, we are healed.
That is to say Jesus has paid the price for us on the cross of Calvary. Now, there were many stripes on Him, the result of being lashed and scourged by soldiers. Every stripe on His Body represents a category of disease or affliction, and the sum total of all the stripes represent different sicknesses, diseases and afflictions. Because of this, you are not a sick person trying to get healed; you are the person Jesus had already healed that the devil is trying to make sick. There is nothing new God is about to do concerning your healing; He has done it already.
Now, how do you receive your healing from God?

1. Through the act of thanksgiving. Always thank God for your healing (Proverbs 17:22).
2. Through positive actions. If you want to experience the reality of your healing, do what healed people do (Luke 17:14).
3. Make positive declarations. Let the weak say I am strong (Joel 3:10). Do not dignify the infirmity with attention.
4. Ensure you are saved. Your healing is guaranteed if your salvation is confirmed. The Saviour is the same as the Healer and the Deliverer (Psalm 103:1-5).

Beloved, believe the truth of God’s Word about your healing: By His stripes, you are healed.

Remember This: You are not a sick person trying to get healed; you are the person Jesus had already healed that the devil is trying to make sick.

Assignments:

1. Appreciate God for your healing and good health continually.
2. Make bold and positive declarations concerning your good health continually.

Prayer: O Lord, I thank You for Your sacrifice for me on the Cross of Calvary. Thank You for carrying away my sicknesses and diseases. I decree that I am totally free from sicknesses and diseases and I reject whatever the devil has put on me, Lord in Jesus’ Name.

Topic: Expect the Messiah [Our Daily Bread 11 December 2018 Devotional]

“Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary?” Matthew 13:55

The repairman looked young—too young to fix our problem, a car that wouldn’t start. “He’s just a kid,” my husband, Dan, whispered to me, showing his doubt. His disbelief in the young man sounded like the grumbling in Nazareth where citizens doubted who Jesus was.

“Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?” they asked (Matthew 13:55) when Jesus taught in the synagogue. Scoffing, they were surprised to hear that someone they knew was healing and teaching, and asked, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” (v. 54). Instead of trusting in Jesus, they were offended by the authority He displayed (vv. 15, 58).

In this same way, we may struggle to trust in our Savior’s wisdom and power, especially in the familiar and ordinary details of our daily lives. Failing to expect His help, we may miss out on the wonder of His life transforming our own (v. 58).

As Dan found, the help he needed stood right in front of him. Finally agreeing to accept the young man’s aid, my husband allowed him to look at our old car’s battery. By switching just one bolt, the mechanic had the car running in seconds—engine humming and lights ablaze. “It lit up like Christmas,” Dan said.

So too may we expect and experience the Messiah bringing fresh light, life, and help into our daily journey with Him.

Prayer: When I doubt You, Lord, help my unbelief.

What are some practical ways you can remind yourself or others that God is in control and He is able?

INSIGHT
Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah, the one promised in the Old Testament who would rescue God’s people and rule them justly. The word Messiah (from the Greek messias) is found only twice in the New Testament—John 1:41 and 4:25. John is careful to translate this word for his readers: “The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (that is, the Christ)” (1:41). The word Christ (christos) means “anointed.” It’s the New Testament equivalent of Messiah and is found multiple times, beginning in Matthew 1:1: “This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah (christos) the son of David, the son of Abraham.” The composite picture of the Messiah/the Christ is that He is Jesus, the God-man, the King who has been raised from death and exalted to the right hand of God (Acts 2:32–36).
