Speaking to Premier in the House of Lords, where he is representing the Church of England this week, Dr Steven Croft said the UK needs to get behind the “process of negotiation”.

On the idea of a referendum, he said: “My own view is that it would make things worse and it would open up the more fundamental questions again.”

“The process of negotiation, which the Prime Minister is leading, is to try and find the right way of reconfiguring our relationship [with the EU] – that’s something the whole nation can coalesce around.”

“It’s an immensely challenging task and I pray for her daily in it.”

Last month, hundreds of thousands took to the streets of London to call for a second referendum.

The bishop was speaking as the Prime Minister continues her campaign to win support for her Brexit plan.

Speaking to business leaders in London, Theresa May said she’s secured a deal that will work for the UK – and no-one should be in any doubt she’s “determined to deliver it.”

It’s still unclear whether she will face a leadership challenge.

It’s unknown whether the number of MPs who are calling for a vote of no confidence in her has reached the needed 48.

Sussex Police have released a CCTV image of Jeremy Brabrooke at St Faith’s Church in Havant, Hampshire.

The 56-year-old left Ford Prison in West Sussex on Wednesday November 14 and was spotted at the church later the same day.

A police spokesman said: “Officers are keen to locate and detain the 56-year-old, who was last seen at the prison on Wednesday (14 November).

“He was captured on CCTV at St Faith’s Church in Havant, Hampshire, later that same day.

“He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1988 for murder in Bradford, West Yorkshire, and is known to have links to Hayling Island and Portsmouth in Hampshire.

“Anyone who sees him or knows where he may be is asked to call 999.

“You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

The latest survey by Ipsos Mori shows only 62 per cent of people say they trust clergy to tell the truth.

That compares with 69 per cent two years ago and 85 per cent in 1983 when the first survey was done by the organisation.

Ipsos Mori asked 1,001 people about whether they trust different professions to tell the truth.

At the top were nurses on 96 per cent and doctors on 92 per cent closely followed by teachers on 89 per cent.

At the bottom were politicians on 19 per cent and advertising executives on 16 per cent.

Clergy are in the middle of the table on the same level as television newsreaders and the ordinary man or woman in the street.

Addressing the findings on Premier’s News Hour, Rev Michael John from Holy Trinity, Clapham in south London said: “Less and less people are attending church.

“They are having less and less exposure to clergy and church leaders. Maybe that’s got something to do with it – but actually if you don’t know, if you don’t have a relationship with someone who is a member of the clergy, that’s going to affect the trust you have of them.”

He said trust would be improved if people spent more time with clergy.

“I think a classic example would be something like Alpha. You build trust with people over the week and after five or six weeks, you can invite them to church where they will be more open to hearing what you have to say.”

The Christian couple that own White magazine made the claim in a blog post where they explained that the publication is no longer “economically viable”.

Luke and Carla Burrell, who started the magazine twelve years ago continued: “Last year the Australian law was changed to allow same-sex couples to marry. Since then we have been asked repeatedly why our magazine had not yet featured all couples.

“White Magazine has always been a secular publication, but as its publishers, we are Christian. We have no agenda but to love. We have no desire to create a social, political or legal war, which only divides people further and does more damage than good. To us, our faith is anchored in love without judgement.”

The Burrells said they had received a “flood of judgement” while some have “blindly demanded that we pick a side”.

“The result has been that a number of advertisers withdrew their sponsorship out of fear of being judged, or in protest,” the couple said.

The blog post divided opinion with some comments reflecting the judgement the couple said they had received.
