Call for churches to be open to teenagers suffering mental health issues.

Lily Jo who runs the Lily Jo project based in Manchester and goes into schools to talk about mental health says it’s a case of being willing to listen to the young person.

She told Premier’s News hour:

“I think it’s definitely about having that open dialogue, that open conversation making sure that those young people know actually, if you’re struggling, I’m the person to speak to, like, come and talk to me and we’ll work through it together.

The charity, Action for Children surveyed 5,000 teenagers and found a third were feeling depressed and unable to shake off negative feelings, even with the help of friends and family.

Common issues were feeling depressed, restless sleep and struggling to focus their minds.

The charity offered those in need of support a place on its Blues Programme – the first nationwide programme of its kind to deliver early help for depression in secondary schools.

Since the programme started last October, 620 15 to 18-year-olds have taken part, with 420 completing a questionnaire at the end.

According to the charity 70% had showed an improvement by July this year, with a specific decrease in depression.

The Blues Programme is part of Action for Children’s Build Sound Minds campaign which encourages positive conversation and good mental health.

It is based on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy methods and helps young people understand the connection…

Another Church Building Sealed Shut in Algeria

Another Church Building Sealed Shut in Algeria

TIZI-OUZOU, Algeria, October 18, 2018 (Morning Star News) – Authorities in Algeria sealed shut a church site on Tuesday (Oct. 16) even after Christian leaders complied with orders to meet building codes, sources said.

In Azaghar village near Akbou, about 185 kilometers (114 miles) east of Algiers in Bejaia Province, Kabylie Region, eight policemen sealed shut the doors of the Church of Jesus Christ, pastor Ali Benkhelat told Morning Star News.

Government officials had ordered the closure in February after local administrators visited the 300-member church’s worship site in December 2017 and January, he said.

“After their visit to our place of worship, they asked us to provide another emergency exit door and fire extinguishers, which we have done,” Pastor Benkhelat said. “We even had to close the premises for three weeks for different development work. If they let us work until today, it’s because they had nothing to reproach us for.”

The five-year-old church is a legal entity by virtue of its affiliation with the Protestant Church of Algeria (EPA), but the government order stated that its building was originally meant to be used for a poultry business. Christian leaders said it was clean and never had chickens in it.

Police first went to the building owner, Da Amar, at 4 p.m. on Monday (Oct. 15) and asked him to go to the police station at 5 p.m., which he did, Pastor…

Pope receives invitation from North Korean president, Kim Jong Un

The Pontiff has been given a formal invitation, which was relayed by South Korea’s leader.

The South Korean leader, President Moon Jae-in, who is Catholic, also asked Pope Francis to wish the Korean peninsula peace, reconciliation and shared prosperity.

Last week, the president’s office said he was told by Kim Jong Un that the Catholic leader would be “enthusiastically” welcomed in Pyongyang.

Following a similar invitation for the then-Pope John Paul II to visit North Korea, the Vatican said a papal trip would only be possible if Catholic priests were accepted there.

North Korea has consistently been named in Open Doors’ annual World Watch List as the country where persecution against Christians is worst.

The news comes four months after a much-anticipated visit between Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump in Singapore.

Atheists Should Be Allowed to Pray before Congress, Suit Says

Atheists Should Be Allowed to Pray before Congress, Suit Says

A federal court heard an appeal Thursday in a case involving an atheist group that wants congressional invocations opened up to those who don’t believe in God.

The lawsuit by the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) says atheists should be allowed to give invocations – which typically are prayers — before congressional sessions. A judge last year ruled Congress had the right to bar those who have no faith.

The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals heard FFRF’s appeal Thursday.

“This is not a case that attacks the concept of legislative invocations,” an FFRF brief to the appeals court states. “This is not a case that challenges the delivery of religious-themed invocations. This is not even a case about the gross disproportion of invocations by Christians. Instead, this case is simply, but disturbingly, about the intentional and purposeful exclusion of nonbelievers as invocation-givers by the Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives.”

Dan Barker, co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, was invited in 2015 by his representative, Democrat Mark Pocan, to deliver an invocation but was prevented from doing so by House Chaplain Patrick Conroy. Conroy’s office said all guest chaplains must be ordained by a “recognized body in the faith in which he/she practices” and must have an ordination certificate.

‘Paul Did Not Unhitch the Christian Faith From the Old Testament’

Expand | Collapse
(Screenshot: live1.thegospelcoalition.org)Ray Ortlund, senior pastor of Immanuel Church in Nashville, Tennessee, and the president of Renewal Ministries, gives remarks at The Gospel Coalition’s West Coast Conference on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018.

A Reformed theologian told a conference centered on the Bible book of 2 Timothy that it’s wrong for Christians to “unhitch” their beliefs from the Old Testament, something megachurch pastor Andy Stanley had exhorted earlier this year.

Preaching from 2 Timothy 1:3-8, Ray Ortlund, senior pastor of Immanuel Church in Nashville, Tennessee, and the president of Renewal Ministries, pointed out that when the Apostle Paul was writing to Timothy in the epistle, he stressed his religious heritage through Judaism.

“Paul looks back into his own deepest roots. He goes back to David, to Moses, to Abraham. He reveres the faith that came down to him even filtered through Jewish tradition,” Ortlund said Tuesday at the Gospel Coalition’s West Coast Conference, held at EvFree Fullerton in California.

Ortlund then alluded to comments that Stanley made in a sermon back in late April, without naming the Georgia pastor.

“Unlike some preachers today, Paul did not ‘unhitch’ the Christian faith from the Old Testament,” said Ortlund, his…

Norwegian Doctor Fired for Refusing to Insert IUDs, Win Landmark Court Case

Norwegian Doctor Fired for Refusing to Insert IUDs, Win Landmark Court Case

After a Doctor was fired in December 2015 for refusing to perform a procedure that contradicted her faith, on October 11, Norway’s Supreme Court ruled that a physician has the right to refuse to conduct procedures that violate their conscience.

In December 2015, a General Practitioner Clinic in Sauherad fired Dr. Katarzyna Jachimowicz after she refused to insert IUDs into her patients.

Jachimowicz made it clear that IUDs or intrauterine devices, which CBN News reports can act as an abortifacient, are a clear violation of her Roman Catholic faith.

According to CBN News, Jachimowicz’s clinic was aware of the physician’s pro-life stance before she was hired in 2010.

LifeSiteNews reports that Jachimowicz told her bosses in a meeting, “Life begins at conception and I do not want to take part in destroying it.”

“All present agreed to my conditions, but I did not ask for written confirmation, knowing that an oral agreement is valid as well,” Jachimowicz told the outlet.

Jachimowicz is an experienced physician with more than 20 years of field work. She is also fluent in Polish, Russian, and Norwegian making her a valuable asset to patients from several walks of life.

According to CBN News, Jachimowicz’s termination marked her as the first medical professional in Norway to be fired for exercising her right to freedom of conscience.

“Dr. Jachimowicz…

Priscilla Shirer Apologizes to Black Americans for Saying She Doesn’t Describe Herself as Black

(Screenshot: Facebook)“War Room” actor, Priscilla Shirer.

Weeks after a video clip in which she declares she doesn’t describe herself as a black woman because it gives “too much power” to her blackness went viral, “War Room” actor and evangelist Priscilla Shirer apologized to black Americans offended by her words.

“It hurts my heart to know that I could have possibly offended some of my African American sisters & brothers. If I did, I hope you’ll receive this sincere apology & clarification in the spirit in which I am posting it,” Shirer said in a statement posted on Facebook Wednesday.

The actor’s controversial statement went viral three weeks ago after Chuck Bernal, founder and lead pastor of LifePointe Church in Crowley, Texas, shared it on Facebook and endorsed it as “one of the best statements on a Christian perspective regarding RACE and POLITICS that I have ever heard.”

“I do not describe myself as a black woman because that gives too much power to my blackness,” Shirer, whose father is Dallas megachurch pastor Tony Evans, said.

“I don’t want my race to be the describing adjective of who I am as a woman. I am not a black woman. I am a Christian woman who happens to be black,” Shirer continued to cheers in the video which has been viewed more than 7 million times…

‘The evangelical world has moved on’, LGBT Christian group respond to letter from bishops

OneBodyOneFaith spoke out after the clergy, who include the bishops of Durham and Carlisle, wrote an open letter to the Bishop of Coventry who is chairing the Church of England’s ‘Living in Love and Faith’ (LLF) project.

In the letter, they warned of “major problems” and the danger of division if the Church changes its current position.

They said that the traditional Christian view of sex as being for heterosexual marriage alone “is the teaching of Scripture” and “therefore expresses the character and will of God”.

Responding to the letter, OneBodyOneFaith accused the bishops of being out of touch with UK evangelicals.

In a statement, it said: “What may come as news to these bishops is that the evangelical world has moved on – indeed, perhaps this letter arises out of the fear of recognising just this reality.

“They no longer speak for all evangelicals; their sisters and brothers still hold their evangelical identity dear but have been courageous and open-hearted enough to see a bigger God emerge, God powerfully alive in LGBTI+ people and longing to be known as good news for all, without exception.”

In a call for change within the church, the group said: “Over the coming weeks and months, it will be for the other members of the House of Bishops, in all their diversity of opinion, to hold these eleven of their sisters and brothers to account.

“But ultimately we must…

65-Year-Old Pro-Life Protester Punched in Face While Praying at Planned Parenthood Clinic

65-Year-Old Pro-Life Protester Punched in Face While Praying at Planned Parenthood Clinic

A 65-year-old man was hospitalized on Monday after being viciously attacked while praying outside of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Florida.

According to the Naples Daily News, pro-life supporter Joe Alger was sitting outside of a Planned Parenthood clinic reciting the rosary when an unidentified man began to verbally assault him. According to Mary Claire Dant who witnessed the attack, “the attacker walked up to [Joe] and for several minutes he was verbally badgering him.”

Dant continued saying, “at some point, he kept screaming. All of sudden Joe is standing there – BOOM – he knocks him down onto the ground.”

She goes on to say that Alger was attempting to get up when the attacker started to strike him. Dant, who is also a peaceful pro-life protester, said she, too felt threatened by the situation.

According to The Christian Post, later that day a man fitting the attacker’s description was escorted from the clinic by a sheriff’s deputy.

Alger, however, decided not to press charges and his attacker was not arrested.

“It’s a painful situation,” Alger, who was taken to a hospital, said.

“And I’m not going to make it any worse,” he added.

Reportedly, the Naples Planned Parenthood clinic has regular protests outside the clinic, prompting the facility to station volunteers outside of the building to escort patients…
