Samaritan’s Purse Leads Relief Efforts in Florida and Georgia amid ‘War Zone’-Like Damage

Samaritan’s Purse Leads Relief Efforts in Florida and Georgia amid ‘War Zone’-Like Damage

Evangelical Christian humanitarian aid organization Samaritan’s Purse has set up bases in Albany, Georgia and along the Florida Panhandle this week to aid residents who were affected by the monstrous Category 4 Hurricane, Michael.

Hurricane Michael rocked the Florida panhandle around Mexico Beach just a week ago, leveling houses, ripping trees out of the ground and killing 19 people, with the death toll still expected to climb.

In an effort to help the communities affected by the storm, Samaritan’s Purse, led by evangelist Franklin Graham, has deployed teams of volunteers to Mexico Beach, Florida, and Albany, Georgia where the wreckage is being described as a “war zone.”

Homeowner Vicki Olive told Samaritan’s Purse in a video that she had seen people on television describe the aftermath of a natural disaster as a war zone, but it wasn’t until her cottage was ripped apart that she really understood what they meant.

Another homeowner, Bob Scott, described the Panhandle after the storm as “apocalyptic.”

In Georgia, homeowners are reporting similar scenes. Sylvia Phillips, who has lived in Georgia for over 40 years, said in a video documenting relief efforts in Georgia, “This is the most devastating and catastrophic storm that I have ever witnessed.”

She continued, “We’re just overwhelmed by the damage that it has…

Policeman Sexually Harasses Christian Woman in Sudan, Sources Say

Policeman Sexually Harasses Christian Woman in Sudan, Sources Say

JUBA, South Sudan, October 17, 2018 (Morning Star News) – A young Catholic woman has discovered personally that many Public Order Police in Muslim-majority Sudan believe they have a mandate to sexually harass those they deem inappropriately dressed.

Nyankiir Kual Mayen, a 24-year-old university student in Al Qadarif in eastern Sudan, filed a complaint with police two days after a Public Order Police officer held and groped her on Sept. 21, but there is no indication police have taken any action, sources said.

Mayen, a South Sudanese national studying at Al Qadarif University, was on her way to a church service when she noticed a Public Order Police officer following her in his vehicle. Identified only as Akasha, the officer stopped her as she reached the town’s main market area, she said. Women not dressed according to strict Islamic customs in Sudan are easily identifiable as non-Muslims.

The officer grabbed her and groped her breast, Mayen said.

He ordered her to come with him to the police station, but she insisted that it was illegal to arrest women on the street without a warrant, Mayen said. Annoyed, the officer said he would arrest her for indecent dress, she said.

One of nearly a dozen witnesses said the officer told her he was from the Public Order Police with a mandate to arrest and harass women who were indecently dressed. The business administration…

Kevin DeYoung Says Churches Should Be Mission Driven Like Navy SEALs, Not Comfy Coffee Houses

(Screenshot: The Gospel Coalition)Kevin DeYoung, senior pastor at Christ Covenant Church in Matthews, North Carolina, and board chairman of The Gospel Coalition, speaks at the Gospel Coalition’s West Coast Conference in Fullerton, California, on Oct. 16, 2018.

Author and Christ Covenant Church Senior Pastor Kevin DeYoung has stressed the need for churches to have mission statements more comparable to the U.S. Navy SEALs.

Speaking at The Gospel Coalition’s West Coast Conference Tuesday night, DeYoung centered his speech on 2nd Timothy 2:1–13.

In the biblical passage, the Apostle Paul compares the Christian life to that of being a good soldier, a good athlete, and a hardworking farmer.

DeYoung recalled seeing a church website’s welcome statement, critically listing the items they put forth for potential visitors for worship.

These things included “a casual atmosphere,” “friendly people who will help you find your way around,” “today’s music,” “a Starbucks-esque café where you can relax,” “a Wi-Fi zone to soothe your inner geek,” and, lastly, “you will find that you matter to God.”

As a contrast, DeYoung then read off the SEAL Code, which included “Loyalty to country, team and teammate,” “Serve with honor and integrity on and off the battlefield,” “Ready to lead, ready to…

Australian Prime Minister Considers Moving Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem

Australian Prime Minister Considers Moving Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has welcomed the idea of moving the Australian embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, sparking widespread debate over the issue.

In May, the United States moved its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem signaling the United States’ recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s true capital.

On Tuesday, Australia’s Prime Minister suggested that the land down under might be following suit.

During a press conference on Monday, Morrison said, “We are committed to a two-state solution. Australia’s position on this issue has, to date, assumed that it is not possible to consider the question of the recognition of Israel’s capital in Jerusalem, and that be consistent with pursuing a two-state solution.”

The Prime Minister goes on to say that the former Ambassador of Australia to Israel, Dave Sharma, suggested several months ago that moving the Australian embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv could allow for Australia to both, recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move toward a two-state solution.

The two-state solution refers to a resolution between the warring nations of Israel and Palestine that would create “an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel — two states for two peoples,” as the New York Times put it.

Many on the world stage have been working for decades…

Tragic School Shooting in Crimea Leaves 17 Dead, 40 Injured – Urban Christian News

In this image made from video, showing the scene as emergency services load an injured person onto a truck, in Kerch, Crimea, Wednesday Oct. 17, 2018. An explosive device has killed several people and injured at least 50 others at a vocational college in Crimea Wednesday in what Russian officials have called a possible terrorist attack. (Kerch FM News via AP)

Russian officials are reporting that an 18-year-old student carried out a violent attack at his school in Kerch, Crimea. The bloody attack left 17 people dead and 40 injured before the student committed suicide.

According to the Associated Press:

Russia’s Investigative Committee, the nation’s top investigative agency, said the attacker was caught on security cameras entering Kerch Polytechnic College in the Black Sea city of Kerch and firing at students. It identified him as Vladislav Roslyakov.

Sergei Aksyonov, the regional leader in Crimea, said the fourth-year student at the school had acted alone and killed himself in the school’s library after the attack.

The committee said all the victims died of gunshot wounds.

The statements came after hours of rapidly shifting explanations by Russian officials as to what exactly happened at the school. Officials at first reported a gas explosion, then said an explosive device had ripped through the college canteen during lunchtime in a suspected terrorist attack. Witnesses, however, reported that victims were being killed by a gunman or gunmen.

Reflecting the official confusion, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the victims were killed by an explosion just as the Investigative…

Pastor James MacDonald Disguises Himself as Homeless Man to Measure Church’s Compassion

Pastor James MacDonald Disguises Himself as Homeless Man to Measure Church’s Compassion

Illinois megachurch Pastor James MacDonald recently performed a social experiment with his church and the results blew him away.

The founder of the seven-campus Harvest Bible Chapel posted a video of an experiment where he dressed as a bearded homeless man and sat outside of two Harvest Bible Chapel campuses before Sunday services, observing the churchgoers reactions to him.

The Christian Post reports that MacDonald did the experiment to test his congregations’ willingness to love their neighbor as themselves like the bible commands.

The video that MacDonald posted to his Facebook page on Monday, first shows MacDonald sitting in front of the church buildings with a cup for change, a sign and a shopping cart.

Then slowly, congregants begin to show up, and one by one they all walk by the disguised pastor, without a single person offering help.

At one point, the video shows one man contemplating what he should do. The man walks toward and then away from MacDonald several times before finally deciding to just go inside the church.

“The closer a person is to us and the less common the struggle, the easier it is to love,” MacDonald says in the video. “God forbid I find out my wife has three months to live. I would quit my job and quit everything, right? What if it’s just an acquaintance of yours and what if the problem is recurring……

Sir Cliff Richard ‘over the moon’ at fan track written by worship leader

The track, called ‘Diamond, was presented to the Christian entertainer backstage at a Royal Albert Hall concert coinciding with his 78th birthday on Sunday.

Paul Whitfield from the New Life Christian Centre in Wakefield told Premier: “The song is a real ‘thank you’ from his fans for all the joy, enjoyment and pleasure that he’s brought to them over the years…”

Inspiration for the idea came from fans in London and Surrey who decided to create a musical piece celebrating what Sir Cliff means to them.

Aficionados were asked to contribute a couple of lines they had written about Sir Cliff and a donation towards production costs.

Paul went on to say: “I think the only money that was spent was actually on manufacturing the limited edition CD, of which there were 1,000 made. All the surplus has gone directly to Tearfund.”

It has since emerged the single, which featured the vocals of Helen Hobson has raised in excess of £7,000 for charity.

Organisers set themselves the task of raising £4,000 in six months to fund the production of Diamond – but the target was met within just ten days.

A number of industry professionals, including Paul, contributed their time and effort at zero cost – meaning a greater total for Tearfund.

One thousand copies of the limited edition Diamond CD sold out with days but the single is still available to download online.

Christians in Darfur, Sudan Arrested during Combined Worship of House Churches

Christians in Darfur, Sudan Arrested during Combined Worship of House Churches

JUBA, South Sudan, October 17, 2018 (Morning Star News)– Security officials in Sudan last week arrested 13 Christians during a worship service in the Darfur Region, sources said.

Personnel from Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) interrupted the worship service the afternoon of Oct. 10 in Nyala, capital of South Darfur state in western Sudan’s Darfur Region and arrested all 13 Christians present (not Oct. 13 while evangelizing Muslims, as reported elsewhere), the sources said.

NISS personnel gave no reason for arresting the Christians, members of four different house churches who had come together for the service, except to say that they were all converts from Islam, the sources said. Authorities are targeting Christian converts from Islam in Darfur, they said.

“We are worried because their whereabouts are still unknown,” said one source, adding that he feared they might be tortured. “The Christians gathered as one body of Christ from different denominations.”

The arrested Christians include 10 from Darfur and three from the Nuba Mountains in southeastern Sudan. Church leader Tajaldin Idriss Yousif was arrested along with his church members: Alfadil Ismail Alnil, Ahmed Mohammed Hassan, Neseraldin Osman, Shemen Ahmed Shemen and Abubaker Biri.

Other Christians arrested were identified only as Kamal, Abdullah, Mutasim,…

John Piper Explains Why He Doesn’t Talk More About Politics in America

(Screengrab via Vimeo/DesiringGod.org)Theologian, John Piper.

Reformed theologian John Piper has provided an explanation for why he stays out of political discussions despite the curiosity of others.

Piper said on desiringGod.org Monday that people’s observations of him avoiding discussions on politics and current events are mostly true, and reflected on the various reasons for why that is.

“It is a generalization — let’s be clear. It’s a generalization because I wrote a whole book on racism, and it has political ramifications everywhere. I have lots of sermons and articles on abortion, marriage, homosexuality. I’ve looked [former President Barack] Obama right in the face and spoken stuff on YouTube,” he positioned.

Still, he said that the observations are not wrong.

“In general, that is the impression you would get of my life’s work — my sermons and messages and articles and APJs and Look at the Book episodes. Piper doesn’t come at current events very often,” he said of himself.

He listed a number of reasons for why he is the way he is, starting with the way he was raised, namely in an atmosphere where the condition of one’s soul is seen as infinitely more important that politics on Earth.

“I feel today that most of the macro and international, political, economic…

Church members in Trèbes cope with flood months after terrorist attack

The Aude river has been bursting its banks onto the surrounding towns in Southern France, causing at least 13 deaths.

Carcassone Baptist Church, who we spoke to at the time of the attack, got in touch to say that their church had been affected and that a member of their congregation has lost 2 patients in the flood.

Pastor Hichim who runs the church and his wife Elizabeth quickly evacuated with their six children for the night.

Elizabeth told Premier: “Our church was unfortunately flooded too and it’s quite sad because it’s a brand new building that a lot of people have spent time and money and effort renovating in the last few years so that was really sad, to see it in a mess.” She added that although it was only a few centre metres, it has damaged the floor in the creche and the main room.

“After we were evacuated that was the first place we drove to because my husband wanted to check if there was any damage and we did see water pouring down out the drive, which wasn’t a good sign, and then when we got inside there was just water everywhere and mud.”

She said they planned to still meet this Sunday because of the help they had received: “A team of people have been there cleaning up for the last couple of days, they’ve managed to push a lot of water out of the building”

“We don’t know anyone personally who was killed. Although, one of our church members…
