Billy Graham Devotional 17 October 2018 – Searching for Peace?

Topic: Searching for Peace? [17 October 2018]

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee … — Isaiah 26:3

Are you searching for peace? Are you longing for it? You thought you would find it if you made a lot of money, but you didn’t find it. You thought you would find it in getting and accumulating a lot of knowledge, so you got all the degrees you could, but you didn’t find it, this peace.

You’ve searched the religions of the world, but you haven’t found it. There are a thousand ways you’ve turned, trying to find peace, but you haven’t found it. When you come to Christ by an act of faith, He gives you the Holy Spirit who produces the fruit of the Spirit and gives you the peace that passes all understanding.

Prayer for the day: Your presence fills my mind with peace, Lord, bringing into perspective all that I need—You, my heavenly Father.

Florida Churches Band Together to Serve Communities Destroyed by Hurricane Michael

Florida Churches Band Together to Serve Communities Destroyed by Hurricane Michael

Local churches are banding together to help their communities in the wake of mass destruction caused by Hurricane Michael which hit the Florida Panhandle last week.

Residents who evacuated their homes before the Category 4 hurricane reached the Panhandle are now starting to return home to assess the damages, many of them finding that they have nothing left.

Mexico Beach resident Emily Hansen told CBN News, “Everybody we knew lost their house – Everybody – and our jobs.”

Another resident told the outlet, “The devastation – it’s like a bomb just went off here.”

In the face of the destruction, churches, who themselves were not spared destruction, are gearing up to show love to their communities.

One church that’s members are working to help out the community is Destiny Worship Center. Destiny Worship Center which lost the side of its kids building, took to the streets to deliver basic necessities to those in need.

Wayne Asprodites, the pastor of the Destiny Worship Center in Panama City Beach, told CBN News, “Really we’re beginning to communicate to take supplies here on the beach level and bring them over to Panama City and Springfield and Callaway, where the churches there were really destroyed, major damage, and allow them to be collection points for the supplies that people are giving us and distribute to the people in…

It’s Becoming Harder for Americans to Talk About God, Study Shows, but There’s a Solution

(Photo: The Christian Post / Samuel Smith)Hundreds of Christians march in a procession from the National City Church to the White House in Washington, D.C. on May 24, 2018 in response to racism, misogyny, xenophobia, and moral and political “crises” affecting political leadership.

It’s becoming culturally harder for Americans to talk about God, a recent study has shown. But there’s a solution.

Nearly three out of every four Christians are reluctant to talk about their faith with others but “good spiritual practices” could help them overcome their fears, according to Barna research.

In an op-ed for The New York Times on Saturday, Jonathan Merritt, a contributing writer for The Atlantic and author of the book, Learning to Speak God From Scratch: Why Sacred Words Are Vanishing — And How We Can Revive Them, highlights the lack of spiritual or religious conversations among more than three-quarters of Americans.

Citing a survey he conducted with Barna’s help, Merritt said just a mere 13 percent of practicing Christians who attend church regularly had a spiritual conversation once a week. He then pointed to a number of reasons why Americans are shying away from discussions about God or their faith.

“According to my survey, a range of internal conflicts is driving Americans…

Egypt extends state of emergency for three more months following church bomb attacks

The government declared a state of emergency after an Islamic State affiliate bombed two Coptic churches in April 2017, killing at least 44 people, and it has been renewed once before.

President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s latest renewal was published in the official gazette on Tuesday.

Parliament is expected to approve it within seven days, and it has already taken effect.

Egypt has been battling Islamic militants for years, mainly in the restive northern Sinai, but the insurgency gained strength after the 2013 overthrow of an elected but divisive Islamist president.

The militants have mainly targeted security forces and Christians.

In February, Egypt launched a massive nationwide security operation.

Evangelicals are Confused about Christianity’s Core Beliefs, Survey Says

Evangelicals are Confused about Christianity’s Core Beliefs, Survey Says

A new survey from LifeWay Research has found that many Christians are confused about the core beliefs of Christianity.

Ligonier Ministries released their 2018 State of Theology survey results this week, and they have found that a majority of evangelicals have found these statements to be true despite the bible distinctly teaching otherwise:

  • Most people are basically good

  • God accepts the worship of all religions

  • Jesus was the first and greatest being created by God the Father

The survey found that in all three cases a majority of survey takers believed these statements to be true.

In the case of human nature, 52 percent of the 3,000 participants found that everyone sins a little, but most people are generally good by nature. This is contrary to what Romans 3:10 dictates of human nature, that it is fundamentally sinful.

In regard to worship, the survey found that 51 percent of evangelicals believe that God accepts the worship of all religions, which, according to a press release from Ligonier Ministries, includes Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Again, this is contrary to what the Bible teaches in John 14:6.

The survey also found that 78 percent of participants believe that Jesus is the first and greatest being created by God, which John 1:1 shows is not the case.

Additional results found:

  • More than two-thirds (69 percent) of Americans…

Lilly Endowment Gives Christian Ministries $70 Million to Support Pastors Facing Challenges, Isolation

The Lilly Endowment has donated a combined $70 million to dozens of Christian colleges and ministries across the nation to help them establish pastor support networks and programs in 29 states.

The Indianapolis-based philanthropic organization is awarding 78 institutions nationwide grants ranging from $31,000 to $1 million through its Thriving in Ministry initiative to help develop or further programs to assist pastors in building relationships and help them deal with the wide range of issues they could face in urban, rural or suburban ministry life.

Grantees include various theological schools, faith-based colleges and universities, church congregations, denominational agencies, independent religious organizations and religious communities that span mainline, evangelical, Catholic and orthodox Christian traditions.

Azusa Pacific University, a private evangelical university in the suburbs of Los Angeles, received nearly $1 million from the endowment. The school plans to use the money to help launch a new certificate course in pastoral health that among other things will help inner city pastors deal with the trauma of urban life.

According to APU Center for Vocational Ministry Executive Director…

Most Irish people believe Pope did not go far enough on clerical abuse

The pontiff made his first papal trip to the Republic in August and his many protests and public pronouncements on the wrongdoing helped define the visit.

But a research study from Queen’s University Belfast said only 30% of Irish people believed he did enough, although half of practising Catholics concurred.

Queen’s University Belfast researcher Dr Gladys Ganiel said: “Francis’ visit to Ireland has revealed a lot about how people in Ireland think about the Catholic Church.

“Even a pope as popular as Francis cannot distract from the widespread dismay about the way that the Church has handled clerical sexual abuse.

“At the same time, this survey shows clear evidence that Francis’ pontificate has had a positive impact on a significant minority of people’s perceptions of the Catholic Church, both since his visit to Ireland and since he became pope in 2013.”

She said indifference was the main reason why attendance at some of the papal events, including the farewell Mass at Phoenix Park in Dublin, was lower than expected.

Dr Ganiel designed the survey, which received 840 responses. She is a research fellow from the Senator George J Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice at Queen’s.

Key findings included:

– 31% agreed the visit had been “a healing time for victims and survivors of clerical sex abuse”, 36% disagreed and 24% said neither/nor or had no opinion;

– 23% agreed the visit had been “a…

Christian Filmmakers Challenge Minnesota Law for Forcing Them to Make Same-Sex Wedding Films

Christian Filmmakers Challenge Minnesota Law for Forcing Them to Make Same-Sex Wedding Films

Two Christian filmmakers are going before the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Paul, Minnesota on Tuesday, to challenge the state’s law that is forcing them to create videos that contradict their religious beliefs.

According to CBN, Telescope Media Group owners Carl and Angel Larsen wanted to enter into the wedding industry, but the state’s Human Rights Act prohibits the couple from pursuing this avenue unless they make films promoting same-sex marriage, a union that their Christian beliefs define as between one man and one woman.

“The government shouldn’t threaten filmmakers with fines and jail time to force them to create films that violate their beliefs,” said their counsel, Alliance Defending Freedom Jeremy Tedesco in a press release. “Carl and Angel are storytellers – they script, stage, conduct interviews, capture footage, select music, edit and more – all to tell compelling stories through film that promote their religious beliefs.”

“The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7-2 in Masterpiece that the government must respect the belief—held by countless Americans from all walks of life—that marriage is between one man and one woman,” he continued. “The 8th Circuit should reinstate the Larsens’ lawsuit and order the state to stop forcing the Larsens to speak messages about marriage that violate their beliefs.”

The Larsens previously…

Religious hate crimes surge by 40 per cent in 12 months

Home Office data shows there were 8,336 incidents across England and Wales where religion was a factor.

Of that number 52 per cent were crimes against the Muslim community.

The police figures showed that more than half (56%) of the hate crimes recorded were for public order offences and a further third (33%) were for crimes involving violence against the person.

Hate crimes and incidents are defined as those perceived to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a personal characteristic.

The Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination Against Christians in Europe monitors hate crime across the continent.

Executive director Ellen Fantini told Premier’s News Hour the figures could actually be much higher.

“Christians traditionally don’t report hate crimes the way some other groups do,” she said. “They clean up the vandalism, they repair the broken windows but they need to report these crimes as hate crimes.”

Fantini added that the government need to take religiously motivated crimes more seriously to stop the increase.
