Archaeologists Discover 2,000-Y-O Stone Artifact With Jerusalem Inscription – Urban Christian News

A significant archaeological discovery of a stone artifact with the full Hebrew spelling of “Jerusalem” dating back 2,000 years ago was revealed on Tuesday.

The Israel Antiquities Authority and the Israel Museum, which announced the discovery in a press release, explained that the stone inscription dates back to the Second Temple Period, or the first century C.E., and spells Jerusalem the same way it’s spelled today.

Yuval Baruch, Jerusalem regional archaeologist of the Israel Antiquities Authority, and professor Ronny Reich of Haifa University, who read and studied the inscription, explained the biblical significance of the find.

“First and Second Temple period inscriptions mentioning Jerusalem are quite rare. But even more unique is the complete spelling of the name as we know it today, which usually appears in the shorthand version. This is the only stone inscription of the Second Temple period known where the full spelling appears,” they said.

“This spelling is only known in one other instance, on a coin of the Great Revolt against the Romans (66–70 CE). The unusual spelling is also attested to in the Bible, where Jerusalem appears 660 times, with only five mentions — of a relatively late date — having the full spelling (Jeremiah 26:18, Esther 2:6, 2 Chronicles 25:1, 2 Chronicles 32: 9, and 2 Chronicles 25: 1).”

The inscription was originally found in the winter of 2017 during an excavation near the Jerusalem International Convention Center.

Researchers found the foundations of a Roman structure supported by stone columns. The Hebrew inscription in…

Michigan College Cancels Pastor Appreciation Lunch after Atheist Groups Complains

Michigan College Cancels Pastor Appreciation Lunch after Atheist Groups Complains

A community college in Michigan has cancelled its annual Montcalm County Pastors Appreciation lunch after a member of an atheist organization complained.

According to Christian News, Mitch Kahle, co-founder of the Michigan Association of Civil Rights Activists, filed the complaint, saying the lunch violated the constitution law on separation of church and state.

“The 2018 Montcalm County Pastor Appreciation Lunch scheduled for Oct. 11 at Montcalm Community College’s Greenville campus has been cancelled due to concerns expressed by an outside organization,” the college wrote in a press release.

“The concerns expressed have distracted from the true intent of the event, and the college does not wish to have its involvement negatively impact the community service opportunity provided by the Pastor Appreciation Lunch, the release added.

Kahle wrote in his complaint that the event uses public tax dollars.

“MCC is a public institution of higher learning and knowledge – not a church of Christian ideology,” he said. “Public tax dollars, resources, and employees, may not be used to fund, organize, support, coordinate, promote, or hold religious activities or events.”

But Montcalm Community College Bob Ferrentino said the event was for fellowship for pastors.

“We felt it was kind of harmless,” he said. “It was certainly not in any…

Princess Eugenie Marries Jack Brooksbank at Royal Wedding in Windsor – Urban Christian News

Princess Eugenie of York married her longtime commoner boyfriend, Jack Brooksbank, Friday in a stunning Peter Pilotto gown and a royal Russian-style tiara, in a lower-key repeat of the nuptials that enchanted the world when Prince Harry wed his American girlfriend Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle in May.

The new couple left St. George’s Chapel and kissed on the steps while a gaggle of bridesmaids and page boys, including Princess Charlotte and Prince George, followed them out. They climbed into the glass-enclosed Scottish State Coach for a 15-minute carriage procession through Windsor, past gathered fans on the High Street.

The assembled guests at the second royal wedding in five months featured Eugenie’s many royal relatives led by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the bride’s grandparents, who entered the church to a trumpet fanfare.

Harry and Meghan, who wore a deep navy blue coat-and-dress outfit by Givenchy with a matching fascinator, entered the church to cheers, as did Prince William and Duchess Kate of Cambridge, dressed in a claret-colored dress, but they slipped in quickly to avoid grabbing too much of the spotlight.

The bride’s dress, by Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos of the British-based label Peter Pilotto, featured a fitted bodice and full pleated skirt with an off-the-shoulder…

Man Sentenced to 22 Years for Putting Abortion Drug in Girlfriend’s Drink

Man Sentenced to 22 Years for Putting Abortion Drug in Girlfriend’s Drink

A man who put an abortion pill in his girlfriend’s drink has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for attempted first-degree intentional homicide of an unborn child.

Manishkumar Patel, 45, was sentenced Tuesday after admitting to slipping an abortion-inducing drug in his girlfriend’s smoothie in 2007. The woman didn’t drink it, but still miscarried weeks later, according to the Post Crescent newspaper. Patel had been on the run from police for a decade.

Patel obtained the drug in the mail from India.

“I have had plenty of time to think about what I did,” he said during sentencing. “I have no excuse or explanation for my actions.”

A decade ago, he told investigators he “didn’t need any more babies,” and “didn’t want more problems,” the Post Crescent reported.

Patel and the girlfriend had a child together in 2004. In September 2007 – a month after she became pregnant again – he plotted to force her to have a chemical abortion. He took her to an ice cream shop in Appleton, Wis., bought them a smoothie, and then poured it into two different cups.

As she waited in the car, he put a powdery substance – the abortion pill – into her cup and gave it to her. But she saw the powder in the cup and never drank it. She sent it to a lab for testing and discovered it was RU-486.

“He knows what he did was wrong,” his defense…

Andrew Brunson released: ‘I am an innocent man

The court passed a three-year sentence on the 50-year-old preacher from North Carolina, who had been arrested and charged with terrorism offences, but said he wouldn’t return to jail as he had already been detained since October 2016.

Mr Brunson addressed the court before the judge’s ruling, and said: “I am an innocent man. I love Jesus, I love Turkey.”

Stephen Carter is the regional director of Middle East Concern, a Christian charity that has followed the pastor’s case closely.

Reacting to the news of the expected release of Mr Brunson, Mr Carter told Premier: “It’s wonderful news of course. It’s still a breaking story. As far as I know, Andrew and his team are still in the court in fact.

“This is all based on news that is filtering out from the court room.

“Andrew should be free to leave the country – again we’re waiting for confirmation of that and in particular, we’re waiting to be able to speak to with Andrew and his lawyer and the rest of his team but that’s certainly what it looks like at the moment.”

The pastor from North Carolina led a church in Turkey for 20 years before his arrest. He lived with his wife and three children while working for the small Izmir Resurrection Church.

Mr Carter said the prayers of Premier’s listeners and others around the world had helped “sustain” the pastor while imprisoned but he…

After Being Held for Two Years in Turkey, Pastor Brunson is Released

After Being Held for Two Years in Turkey, Pastor Brunson is Released

The United States has brokered a deal with Turkey for the release of North Carolina pastor Andrew Brunson, after almost two years of him being held in a Turkish jail.

According to NBC News, the White House reached a deal with the Turkish authorities that will allow for Brunson to return to the U.S. in the next several days.

Under the agreement made between senior White House officials and the Turkish government, Brunson should be released after specific charges are dropped against him at his next court hearing on Friday.

The pastor was being held on charges of conspiring to overthrow the Turkish government and being a part of a terrorist group.

Though specific details of the deal have not been released, a source told NBC that in exchange for Brunson, the U.S. has committed to easing economic pressure on Turkey.

When Brunson was moved out of the Turkish prison and placed under house arrest in July, many people were hopeful that Brunson would be returned to the U.S. soon after.

Now, after several months under house arrest, the Turkish government has decided to release the pastor. According to Fox News, on October 12, Brunson stood before a Turkish court for a final hearing and it was decided that the pastor would be released and sentenced to time served.

The exact date of his return to the U.S. is not yet known, but President Trump has voiced on Twitter…

Christian pastor Andrew Brunson released and allowed to leave Turkey

Pastor Andrew Brunson, 50, has been in some form of detention, prison or house arrest since October 2016, accused of links to a failed coup in the country which attempted to overthrow the government.

The North Carolina church leader was among hundreds of others; academics, civil servants and journalist, arrested around the same time.

It was decided on Friday that he should be convicted of terror charges but that his imprisonment will be over.

On Friday, the court near the western city of Izmir sentenced Andrew Brunson to three years and one month in prison for the conviction, but since the evangelical pastor has already spent two years in detention he will not serve more time.

Brunson had rejected the espionage and terror-related charges and strongly maintained his innocence.

Lawyer Ismail Cem Halavurt said Brunson is expected to leave Turkey for the United States.

Christian Parents Must Not Abandon Their LGBT Children, Says ERLC’s Andrew Walker

(Screenshot: live.erlc.com)Andrew T. Walker, director of research and senior fellow in Christian ethics at the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, speaking at ERLC’s annual conference in Grapevine, Texas, on Oct. 11, 2018.

Christian families must not forsake family members who identify as LGBT, says Andrew T. Walker, director of research and senior fellow in Christian ethics at the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.

“Do not abandon them. I do not know how this poisonous thinking infected evangelicalism, but in my role at the ERLC I’ve heard from parents who have a gay or lesbian or transgender child who think that because their child is identifying as one of those categories, it means they have to abandon them and banish them away,” said Walker at the ERLC’s annual national conference in Grapevine, Texas, on Thursday.

“If you have that attitude toward others, you should crucify it. If you have that attitude yourself about your child, you need to crucify it. Here’s why: because there is nothing, I repeat, nothing that can nullify the relationship between a parent and a child.”

Walker also denounced how so many issues on transgenderism are “politicized,” noting that it’s not just a “culture war”…

Princess Eugenie and Jack’s wedding begins at ‘church big enough for their friends’

The ninth in line to the throne was given away by her father, Prince Andrew who said his daughter’s wedding has more guests than Harry and Meghan’s – because she has so many friends.

He also told ITV that the Queen was certain about holding the nuptials at Windsor.

In a pre-recorded interview with Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes, the father of the bride said that he was “not intimately involved in the planning”.

And he said: “All the approval goes through the Queen anyway. It was what I was told, where it was going to take place.

Gareth Fuller/PA Wire

“The Queen very firmly said: ‘No, St George’s is where you are going to have the wedding.’

“So I said: ‘Aye, aye ma’am’, turn to the right, salute and carry on.”

Matt Crossick/PA Wire

Robbie Williams, Ellie Goulding and Kate Moss are among 850 guests who will be witnessing the wedding between the Queen’s granddaughter and tequila brand ambassador Jack Brooksbank.

As with Harry and Meghan’s wedding, 1,200 members of the public have been given tickets to hear a broadcast relay of the ceremony from outside the chapel doors.

The senior cleric who will marry the couple, David Conner, the Dean of Windsor, said it had been a pleasure to work with princess Eugenie and her fiance in the run-up to their wedding service which will be a mix of “traditional and…

Pope Francis Accepts Cardinal Wuerl’s Resignation

Pope Francis Accepts Cardinal Wuerl’s Resignation

On Friday, Pope Francis accepted Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl’s resignation after he was accused of aiding in the cover-up of two sexual abuse scandals.

In a letter released by Wuerl’s office, the Pope reluctantly accepted the cardinal’s resignation, noting that he was a longtime ally to the pope and suggesting that Wuerl became a scapegoat amid sexual abuse allegations.

Wuerl’s resignation makes him the most prominent figure in the church to resign amid the Catholic church sex abuse scandal after his predecessor as Washington archbishop, Theodore McCarrick.

McCarrick was forced to resign in 2018 from the College of Cardinals after being accused of sexually assaulting at least two minors and adult seminarians.

The Vatican released a statement Friday to announce Francis’ acceptance of Wuerl’s resignation, but noted that the pope has not named a replacement for the cardinal and as such has asked Wuerl to stay on until a new archbishop can be found.

This decision came after months of Wuerl insisting that he had no knowledge of the sexual abuses by clergy. Nonetheless, many people in the Catholic community lost faith in Wuerl’s leadership and soon the cardinal reached the conclusion that he could no longer lead the archdiocese.

“The Holy Father’s decision to provide new leadership to the Archdiocese can allow all of the faithful, clergy, religious and lay, to focus on…
