Profound Discovery Could Be Used to Treat Most Cancers but Is It Too Good to Be True

Medical researchers are holding their breath. They discovered what they believe could be an effective treatment for most cancers, maybe all of them.

The treatment proved successful in laboratory tests but hasn’t been tried on humans yet, and a lot could go wrong during that testing phase. But right now, scientists are hopeful their new discovery will be a one-size-fits-all treatment for virtually every type of cancer.

The research, published in the journal Nature Immunology describes how scientists at Britain’s Cardiff University recently discovered an amazing cell within the immune system. It’s a type of T-cell that’s equipped with a never-before-seen type of T-cell receptor that carries an astonishing ability to attack cancer cells, all types of cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone.

T-cells equipped with the new T-cell receptor were shown in the lab, to kill lung, skin, blood, colon, breast, bone, prostate, ovarian, kidney and cervical cancer cells, while ignoring healthy cells.

It could be the most profound discovery in the new field of immunotherapy, a cancer treatment widely used on a small number of cancer patients but proving successful.

Current immunotherapy treatments, called CAR-T, involves extracting T-cells from the patient’s own blood, modifying the T-cells, growing the modified T-cells, then returning the modified T-cells to the patient’s bloodstream where they attack and kill cancer cells.

While the method often works on a few types of cancers, such as cancer of the blood, it is not effective in fighting solid tumors, which make up the majority of cancers. This new treatment promises to correct that.

Moving forward, scientists will try to determine exactly how the newly discovered T-cell receptor can tell the difference between cancer cells and healthy cells.

They will also perform safety tests on the proposed treatment to make sure it’s not dangerous to try on human subjects. The safety tests will take months.

If the treatment passes the rigorous safety tests, by the end of 2020, doctors may begin trials on human cancer patients.

If the human trials progress successfully, the treatment might be available to the general public in a few years.

Christians Slain, Wounded, Kidnapped in Plateau State, Nigeria

Christians Slain, Wounded, Kidnapped in Plateau State, Nigeria

JOS, Nigeria, January 27, 2020 (Morning Star News) – Muslim Fulani herdsmen killed two Christians in separate attacks in Plateau state this month, in addition to the 13 Christians from the same denomination killed on Jan. 8, sources said.

Herdsmen invaded Torok village in Riyom County on Jan. 20, killing Reuben Bulus, a 25-year-old member of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), according to Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, a human rights activist with the Emancipation Centre for Crisis Victims in Nigeria.

“Bulus was killed at about 7:10 p.m. on Jan. 20 when herdsmen invaded his village,” Mwantiri told Morning Star News.

In Gako village, near Rim in Riyom County, another COCIN member, Ngam Stephen Dachung, was killed by herdsmen on Jan. 1, Mwantiri said.

“He was shot dead at a point at Gako-Diyan junction where many lives were previously lost to herdsmen ambushes in the area,” he said.

On Jan. 8, 13 COCIN were members slain in Plateau state’s Kulben village, Mangu County, in an attack by about 20 herdsmen that also wounded three others.

In addition, Mwantiri said, herdsmen killed a Christian woman, Mary Machief, and her baby daughter in Plateau state’s Bokkos County on Dec. 16. The herdsmen attacked them in Machief’s father’s home in Kunnet village that night, relatives told Morning Star News.

“It’s still a shock to me, I wish it were a dream,” said one relative.

Tim Tebow Foundation Prepares for 6th Annual Night to Shine Event for People with Special Needs

Tim Tebow Foundation Prepares for 6th Annual Night to Shine Event for People with Special Needs

Night to Shine events, created and sponsored by newlywed Tim Tebow’s philanthropic foundation, are special for several reasons, according to the charity’s website.

With glitzy and glamourous Hollywood-style flair, “Night to Shine is an unforgettable prom night experience … for people with special needs ages 14 and older.” The sixth annual worldwide event is scheduled for Feb. 7 when hundreds of churches across the globe are expected to host many thousands of “honored guests.”

But there is another reason that makes Night to Shine distinctive for the former NFL quarterback Tebow and his new bride, 2017 Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, who were married in Cape Town, South Africa, on Jan. 20, as reported by Christian Headlines. Tebow and his future wife met at a 2018 Night to Shine event in South Africa, he told Hoda Kobt and Kathie Lee Gifford on the NBC Today show during an appearance later that year.

“Her sister has special needs, so we invited them to Night to Shine in South Africa, Tebow said during his segment on the show. “We kind of met and started talking through that and haven’t stopped.”

According to a report by UPI, Nel-Peters’s “sister Franje, 13, had special needs and died in 2019 after battling cerebellar agenesis. The neurological condition involves having an underdeveloped or undersized cerebellum, the part of the…

Kobe Bryant wrote after 9/11, ‘We never know when our time here will be over’: The best way to help our culture value every person

Three months after 9/11, Kobe Bryant wrote a column for Newsweek reflecting on what he had learned from the tragedy.

He stated: “I’ve learned also that you can’t take things for granted. You know how we always say ‘See you later’? One thing I’ve realized from September 11 is that you can’t ever say that for sure. Things change in the blink of an eye. People go to work and don’t come back. One minute they’re living and the next minute they’re not. And, it doesn’t matter who you are, there is nothing you can do about it.”

He concluded: “We never know when our time here will be over, so we all need to make the most of every minute we have.”

The other victims of the helicopter crash

Just as Kobe Bryant sought meaning in the aftermath of 9/11, I’ve been searching for meaning in his shocking death. The unpredictability of life he highlighted in his Newsweek article is one obvious fact. Another is his observation that, with regard to mortality, “it doesn’t matter who you are.”

A third factor illustrated by his death is the way our culture focuses on celebrity. For example, seven other people died in the helicopter crash along with Bryant and his daughter Gianna, but their stories have not been the focus of media attention.

One of them was John Altobelli, a baseball coach who helped hundreds of players earn scholarships to Division I programs over the years. He and his wife Keri were on board the helicopter with their daughter Alyssa, who played on the same basketball team as Gianna Bryant.

Another victim was Christina Mauser, the top assistant on the girls’ basketball team. Sarah Chester and her daughter Payton, a teammate of Gianna Bryant’s, also died in the crash, as did the helicopter pilot, Ara Zobayan.

More Americans watched a soap opera than watched the impeachment trial

Those we don’t know are just as important to their family and friends as those we do.

Four Trends for Churches in 2020

Podcast Episode #610

SUBSCRIBE:
iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn Radio • Google Play • iHeart Radio • Spotify

We are one month into 2020 and there is much we can learn about anticipated trends and how churches can begin to connect the dots and prepare for the future. While some trends you will expect, others will be new and our hope is that these four trends will be informative.

Highlights:

  1. Worship sizes will grow significantly smaller.
  2. There will be a significant increase in the number of worship services offered at times other than Sunday morning.
  3. Church facilities will undergo dramatic transformation.
  4. Attendance will become a greater emphasis.

Other Highlights:

  • While average weekly attendance in worship will grow smaller this trend does not infer lower overall attendance.
  • The conversation among pastors is moving from size of worship space to quantity of worship opportunities.
  • Thursday evening worship services may become a popular choice for creating a new service time.
  • As churches build smaller worship space they will often times concurrently build larger community and common space.

WATCH ‘Burden’ Film Based on True Story of Former KKK Member Who Converted to Christianity Under Ministry of Black Pastor He Tried to Assassinate Hits Theaters on February 28

“Burden,” a powerful new film about a former KKK member whose life was transformed after forming a friendship with a black preacher he once planned to assassinate, will soon hit the big screen.

Releasing in select theaters Feb. 28, “Burden” follows the true story of Michael Eugene Burden Jr., who in 1996 opened the Redneck Shop and Klan Museum in Laurens, South Carolina, displaying KKK paraphernalia, including white-hooded Klan uniforms and photographs of lynchings.

However, after meeting a woman who persuades him to leave the KKK, Burden renounces his Klan membership and sells his store to the Rev. David E. Kennedy, a black pastor whose own uncle was lynched by the KKK.

Burden’s decision to sell his store infuriates Klan members, who seek vengeance. Because the KKK holds tremendous power over the small town, Burden soon finds himself jobless and penniless.

Despite his own misgivings, Reverend Kennedy, the pastor of New Beginnings Church, decides to shelter Burden, his girlfriend, and her son. In doing so, the pastor and community members set aside their own misgivings in hopes of teaching the former Klan member about love and acceptance. Thanks to the pastor’s kindness, compassion, and grace, Burden embraces Christianity and is baptized.

A trailer for the forthcoming film shows the moment Reverend Kennedy embraces Burden, telling skeptical community members, “I view him as a brother in Christ.”

Michael Brown on When a Drag Queen Has to Lecture ‘Woke’ Parents on Morality

The views expressed in this commentary do not necessarily reflect those of BCNN1.

You know that American culture has hit an all-time low when it takes a drag queen to tell “woke” parents to keep their kids out of drag bars. Who would have thought?

I just did a search for “drag queen lectures parents,” looking for articles related to the subject of this article.

The results of the search were telling, yielding headlines like this on a wide variety of drag-related stories:

“School Board Scolds Parents for Opposing Drag Queen’s Makeup Lesson.”

“Some Parents Outraged After Drag Queen Speaks At School Career Day.”

“Viral Video Shows Drag Queen Teaching Children To ‘Twerk’ As Parents Look On.”

“Drag Queen Prostitute Visits Texas School.”

“Parents outraged after X-rated drag queen speaks to 11-year-olds at school career day.”

What on earth is going on?

There is even a debate as to whether or not a drag queen flashed toddlers during a recent reading event. I am not making this up.

Adding to this madness is the new phenomenon of little boys being celebrated as drag queens, most famously the little boy known as Desmond Is Amazing. And little Desmond actually performed in a gay bar, leading to a firestorm of criticism. Reporting on this controversy, Pink News reported that, “Drag kid Desmond is Amazing’s mum defends gay bar performance.”

Well, one drag queen has said enough is enough, scolding parents for the insane practice of bringing their children into gay bars where drag queens perform.

As reported by Will Maule on Christian Headlines, “A popular drag queen known as ‘Kitty Demure’ has issued a stark warning to parents who are seeking to involve their children in the crossdressing scene.”

In the video, which is going viral, “Kitty” asks pointedly, “What in the h*** has a drag queen ever done to make you have so much respect for them, and admire them so much, other than put on makeup and jump on the floor and writhe around and do sexual things on stage?”

Precisely so!

John Stonestreet on The Problem With MisRemembering the Holocaust

Today, on the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the infamous Nazi death camp known as Auschwitz, the world marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The millions who each year visit Auschwitz, as well as the Holocaust museums in Jerusalem, Washington D.C., and elsewhere become witnesses to an era of almost unimaginable cruelty.

They, and we, are told to “never forget.” And we shouldn’t. But, it is crucial not only that we remember, but how we remember.

Last week, in the online magazine TLS, Nikolaus Wachsmann reflected on the plea of camp victim Zalman Gradowski that future generations would “form an image” of the “hell” of Auschwitz.

“But,” Wachsmann writes, “the Auschwitz of popular imagination often bears little relation to the Auschwitz Gradowski had lived and died in. As a global emblem of evil, the camp has become unmoored from its actuality.”

For example, Wachsmann relates that “It is often said … that Auschwitz was a different planet, so alien that even birds did not sing there.” But that’s not true. The camp’s surroundings were “rich in wildlife.” So rich, in fact, “that employees of IG Farben, the German firm that enslaved thousands of prisoners, went birding together, while a trained ornithologist among the SS guards meticulously surveyed the local species… for scholarly publications.”

In other words, there is a very real human tendency to mis-remember the grave evils of history: to imagine that they happened in a different world; to think that those who perpetuated such evil, or those who scandalously remained silent and complicit, were somehow different kinds of people than we are.

Conservative UMC Leader Says Denomination is ‘Irretrievably Broken’ Over Homosexuality Debate

A conservative United Methodist Church leader has stated his support for a proposal that allows UMC churches to leave the denomination over LGBT issues.

The Rev. Joseph F. DiPaolo, member of the Wesleyan Covenant Association Council, said that while he used to support staying with the UMC to “contend for the faith once delivered to the saints,” he stated that “I no longer believe that is possible.”

Recently, UMC leaders representing diverse views on the LGBT debate announced their support for a proposal called the “Protocol of Reconciliation and Grace through Separation.”

If approved, the protocol would allocate $25 million for conservative Methodists to vote to leave the UMC and create their own Church, tentatively labeled “traditionalist Methodist.”

DiPaolo argued in a column Friday that the UMC is “irretrievably broken” due to the debate over homosexuality.

“Progressive clergy, churches and conferences stepped up their campaign of resistance, through defiance of our disciplinary covenant,” he wrote.

“Many bishops have been complicit, either through overt support, or by failing to exercise any meaningful accountability toward those who break their covenantal vows.”

Franklin Graham Event Canceled Because He Views Gay Marriage a ‘Sin’

The Rev. Franklin Graham, an evangelist and the son of the late preacher Billy Graham, was slated to speak this summer at a venue in Liverpool. That stop, though, will no longer take place.

Graham’s event, to be held at ACC Liverpool, was part of a larger tour through the United Kingdom. Officials at the venue, however, announced Friday the event would be scrubbed from the schedule because Graham’s views — particularly his biblical interpretation of marriage as a union between one man and one woman — are “incompatible with our values.”

The Graham Tour UK event which was originally planned to take place at ACC Liverpool in June 2020 will no longer be going ahead.

Please find full statement here:https://t.co/pwXwzf6S6c

— ACC Liverpool (@ACCLiverpool) January 26, 2020

The decision to cancel Graham’s stop in Liverpool isn’t surprising. Protesters have been rebuking the leaders of the venue for allowing Graham to share the Gospel in the space.

One group critical of Graham’s slated appearance at ACC Liverpool was the Liverpool Labour LGBT Network, which referred to the evangelist as “a homophobic hate preacher.”

— Labour Party LGBT+ Network (@LPLGBTNetwork) January 24, 2020

On Monday afternoon, Graham replied to the decision by ACC Liverpool.

He penned an open letter to the LGBTQ community in the U.K., informing them he is coming to Great Britain not to condemn them. Rather, he is coming to present the Gospel.

FAITHWIRE  Kobe Bryant’s Tragic Death Reminds Us How Fragile Life Is

Graham did, though, admit he does see homosexuality as a sin.

“The rub, I think, comes in whether God defines homosexuality as sin,” he wrote. “The answer is yes. But God goes even further than that, to say that we are all sinners — myself included. The Bible says that every human being is guilty of sin and in need of forgiveness and cleansing. The penalty of sin is spiritual death — separation from God for eternity.”

Graham also defended the right to free speech and religious liberty. He wrote he is not coming to the U.K. “to speak against anybody” because the Gospel “is inclusive.”

“I’m coming to speak for everybody,” he added. “The Gospel is inclusive. I’m not coming out of hate, I’m coming out of love.”

The 67-year-old preacher ended his letter by saying those in the LGBTQ community are “absolutely welcome” to attend one of his events in the U.K.
