Thousands sign petition to keep Christian-owned Chick-Fil-A restaurant open following LGBT protests

Global Christian campaigners, CitizenGo launched the online petition on 22nd of October, calling for the Reading branch to remain open after the decision was made not to renew the restaurant’s lease following a number of demonstrations on site by LGBT activists.

Members of the LGBT community have taken issue with the organisation following comments made by the founder’s Christian son.

Both chief executive Dan Cathy and his late father Samuel, who founded the chain in 1946, have publicly made donations towards Christian charities that oppose LGBT lifestyles.

In 2012, Dan Cathy confirmed that the company does not support same-sex marriage because it opposes the organisation’s Christian values.

The petition claims that the “forced” closure of the restaurant is “an attack on religious freedom.”

“Chick-Fil-A are not in breach of any UK employment laws and do not discriminate against any of their customers therefore there is no good reason why this popular restaurant cannot be allowed to remain open,” it reads.

“It is not the role of a commercial landlord to police the corporate values or religious beliefs of their tenants. No company is compelled to engage in any type of philanthropic activity and it is entirely up to individuals and corporations to decide which organisations best reflect their values.”

At the time of writing the petition has 17,300 signatures.

Atheist Group Urges County to Remove ‘In God We Trust’ Decals from Patrol Cars

Atheist Group Urges County to Remove ‘In God We Trust’ Decals from Patrol Cars

A Florida county’s placement of “In God We Trust” decals on patrol cars is an “inappropriate” inclusion of religion in the public square, an atheist group says.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said on its Facebook page over the weekend that its new vehicles in the coming months and years would include a “patriot theme,” with an American flag on the side and the phrase “In God We Trust” on the back. The latter is the national motto.

“To us there is no greater honor than to live in the greatest country in the world and serve as a law enforcement officer in Brevard County where our citizens love us, trust us and protect us just as much as we love, trust and protect them,” the Facebook post said.

But the Freedom From Religion Foundation – a coalition of atheists, agnostics and skeptics – is urging the sheriff’s office to abandon the plan and to remove the stickers.

“Spending taxpayer time placing religious messages on patrol cars is beyond the scope of secular government,” Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the group, wrote in a letter to Sheriff Wayne Ivey. “Further, in a time when citizens nationwide are increasingly distrustful of law enforcement officers’ actions, it is frightening and politically dubious for the local police department to announce to citizens that officers rely on the judgment of a deity…

Priest pays tribute to ‘bubbly and courageous’ Amelia Bambridge

Police said her body was found at sea about 62 miles from where she went missing.

Some members of the family flew out to help search for her, including her mum Linda, dad Phil and brother Harry.

Amelia’s brother, Harry Bambridge has confirmed the news on social media, he wrote: “I’ve just seen her and I can confirm it’s my little sister Amelia. I’m so sorry to all her friend and family, there’s nothing more I wanted then to bring her back alive…”

Miss Bambridge, from West Sussex grew up attending St Michael’s Catholic church in Worthing, where the Bambridge family held a prayer vigil for her on Wednesday evening.

Father Christopher Ingle from St Michael’s told Premier: “We are absolutely devastated. Everyone is very upset as you can imagine.

Fr Christopher said: “I’ve known her since she was a baby, she was baptised here as a baby, she had her first communion here.”

Remembering Amelia Bambridge, the priest explained: “She was absolutely fabulous, a very courageous, very strong and wonderful person.

“Prayer is really powerful, to give us strength, courage and comfort. Please pray and ask the Lord to comfort Amelia’s family at this time and to keep her in your hearts to remember,” he added.

Trump Nominee Refutes Anti-LGBT Charges: Everyone Is ‘Created in the Image of God’

Trump Nominee Refutes Anti-LGBT Charges: Everyone Is ‘Created in the Image of God’

President Trump’s nominee to fill a seat on the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals referenced his Christian beliefs Wednesday in defending charges he would be biased against LGBTQ individuals.

Lawrence VanDyke, who has represented both the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) – two groups often in opposition – was reacting to an American Bar Association report that said he “would not say affirmatively that he would be fair to any litigant before him, notably members of the LGBTQ community.”

VanDyke was appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is scheduled to vote on his nomination, the Hill reports.

“I did not say that,” he said through tears. “I do not believe that. It is a fundamental belief of mine that all people are created in the image of God, and they should all be treated with dignity and respect.”

VanDyke’s nomination has the potential to further transform the Ninth Circuit, which traditionally has been one of the more liberal appeals courts in the nation. Liberal groups oppose his nomination.

Democratic Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (Vt.) asked VanDyke about a 2004 op-ed in which the nominee wrote that same-sex marriage would “hurt families, and consequentially children and society.” VanDyke said his personal views would remain separate from his decision, The…

Caroline Spelman’s last Church Commissioner’s questions raises climate change and Bercow as Archbishop

Spelman is the Conservative MP for Meriden but will be standing down at this election after 22 years, citing abuse she’s received as one of her reasons.

She is also the Second Estate’s Church Commissioner, who acts as a liaison between the Church of England and parliament, answering MPs’ questions on the Church.

On Thursday, Spelman stood at the despatch box for her last Church Commissioner’s Questions, which was kicked-off by her thanking her staff.

“I would like to record my heartfelt thanks to my small team of staff, especially my constituency secretary who has faithfully served me for 20 out of 22 years. I think we often forget that it is the staff who are on the front line of much of the abuse that we are receiving and I really want to record my admiration for their fortitude.”

The Christian politician was praised by MPs Rachel Maskell, Pauline Latham, Tim Loughton, Diana Johnson and Rehman Chishti, the Government’s special envoy for freedom of religion and belief.

Spelman confirmed that civil servants in diplomatic roles would be given religious literacy training and that she had met with the bishops of Gloucester and Newcastle to talk about helping women who were leaving prison.

She also praised the Church of England’s digital progress through the app, Alexa skill and website that has improved to help people find out their local church’s service…

Federal Judge Blocks Alabama Abortion Ban, Says it ‘Defies the United States Constitution’

Federal Judge Blocks Alabama Abortion Ban, Says it ‘Defies the United States Constitution’

On Tuesday a federal judge in Alabama blocked the state’s near-total abortion ban.

According to the Associated Press, U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson issued an injunction to temporarily halt the Human Life Protection Act from going into effect. The law was set to take effect on November 15.

Thomas issued the preliminary injunction after abortion providers filed a lawsuit challenging the law’s constitutionality. Thomas’ injunction will remain in effect until she can hear the case.

Along with her injunction, Thomas wrote an opinion noting that she believes the law contradicts the constitution.

She wrote, “Alabama’s abortion ban contravenes clear Supreme Court precedent. It violates the right of an individual to privacy, to make choices central to personal dignity and autonomy. It diminishes the capacity of women to act in society, and to make reproductive decisions. It defies the United States Constitution.”

As Christian Headlines previously reported, the Human Life Protection Act would nearly ban all abortions in the state of Alabama. The law – which was sponsored by Republican Representative Terri Collins – would classify abortion as a Class A felony and threatens anyone who performs an abortion with a sentence in prison of up to 99 years.

The law does not make exceptions in the cases of rape or incest, though it does…

In Northern California, Churches Step Up to Shelter Fire Evacuees

In Northern California, Churches Step Up to Shelter Fire Evacuees

(RNS) — Around 4:45 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 27), staffers at CrossWalk Community Church in Napa got a call, alerting them the church would need to serve as an evacuation center as the Kincade fire continued to spread in Northern California.

By 6 a.m., the church doors were open.

Members set up the gym space to host evacuees and cleared the sanctuary area after worship services to make room for additional cots. About 20 evacuees stayed that night at the church; some 45 had been assisted as of Tuesday.

Wednesday morning, the Kincade fire in Sonoma County wine country entered its eighth day and had grown to more than 76,000 acres. As of Wednesday, the fire had destroyed 206 structures, including 94 homes, and injured two first responders. More than 90,000 structures remained under threat, including 80,435 houses. Firefighters had reached 30% containment of the blaze. A Cal Fire advisory listed six churches, such as St. Mary’s Cathedral and Calvary Chapel of Petaluma, serving as evacuations centers. Some were at capacity.

Down south, the Getty fire — which broke Monday in a canyon west of Interstate 405 and near The Getty — had grown to 745 acres and was 27% contained Wednesday morning. It had destroyed 12 homes and damaged five others.

Pastor Peter Shaw said CrossWalk Community Church has been prepping for months for a disaster like this.

TobyMac launches foundation in honour of son

Instead of giving flowers for the funeral of their 21-year-old son, they have asked that people give to a charity they have set up in Truett’s name.

TobyMac is an American Christian musician who was part of the band DC Talk until 2001 and then made several solo albums.

The eldest of TobyMac’s children died unexpectedly last week at their family home in Nashville, Tennessee.

Truett had put out a number of different tracks under different names and had also collaborated with his dad on a number of songs.

On Tuesday, TobyMac shared a photo on Facebook announcing the foundation. The Truett Foster Foundation will raise money to help young people pursue education in music.

“Truett Foster Mckeehan had an untamable grand personality and dreams to match. Since the age of 12, he knew he wanted to make music.

“Dreams are so important to kids growing up. Too many kids do not have the financial ability to pursue their dreams. We want to use this fund to help kids do just that. Get an education, to pursue music, to get the chance to live their dream. Truett would have loved that,” the description of the Truett Foster Foundation reads.

According to the foundation’s website, donations made in Truett’s name will help send “vulnerable youth to college, that they may realize their God-given potential to change the lives of others.”

One hundred percent of the donations will be used…

A Colossal Flaming Jack-O’-Lantern in the sky: Explaining ghosts and living by transforming truth

Credit: NASA/SDO: “Active regions on the sun combined to look something like a jack-o-lantern’s face on Oct. 8, 2014.”

If Halloween is supposed to be frightening, the holiday came early for me last night.

The Nationals defeated the heavily favored Houston Astros last night to bring Washington their first World Series title since 1924. As a native Houstonian, watching my team lose was painful. But the Nationals are a great story of perseverance whose playoff run united a city divided by deep political rancor these days.

Now it’s time for something else Democrats and Republicans can do together.

Some 175 million Americans participated in Halloween last year, spending $9 billion in the process. NASA has even joined the effort, bringing us the Colossal Flaming Jack-O’-Lantern. (That’s my name, not theirs.)

It’s a picture of the sun captured by the space agency. Because of active regions burning more brightly than others, it really does look like a huge jack-o’-lantern in the sky.

It seems everyone is celebrating Halloween these days. But for many in the US, the holiday is more than candy and make-believe. Much more, in fact.

Why do people believe in ghosts?

According to a YouGov survey, 45 percent of Americans believe ghosts exist. Forty-three percent think ghosts can come back to haunt people or places.

What explains such belief?

“Paranormal investigator” Sharon A. Hill: “For over 200 years, many people, even scientists, have sought evidence for ghosts and life after death. There are millions of pages of previous research and experimentation into paranormal ideas. Definite proof has never been found.”

However, “because almost all paranormal investigators have a preconceived belief about ghosts, they do not look very hard for other explanations. They quickly embrace a paranormal conclusion since that is their goal.”

Psychology professor Christopher French agrees: “Studies…
