Christian charity welcomes NI bookmakers betting machine curbs

McLeans and Toals are members of trade group Northern Ireland Turf Guardians’ Association (NITGA), which has recommended operators should follow the rest of the UK in reducing the amount that can be wagered on the machines by 1st April, 2019.

William Hill, Paddy Power and Coral have also agreed to reduce the stake on FOBTs from £100 to just £2 from April in Northern Ireland.

Mark Baillie, CARE in Northern Ireland’s policy officer said of the news: “This is fantastic news and credit should be given to Councillor Kyle for taking up this vital issue and to the bookies for proactive action.

“FOBTs cause genuine social devastation and the toxic combination they offer of high speed play and a high maximum stake means punters can lose thousands far too easily.

“With the British Government cutting the stake over there, it was vital bookies took action to bring NI into line with the rest of the UK.

“The fact that FOBTs operate in a legal grey area meant the onus was with the bookies to do something to address the absurdly high maximum stake here.

Lee Davy

“The fact they have done so is great news for problem gamblers and their families all across Northern Ireland.

“Let’s hope this is the start of further action to provide support and help to those addicted to gambling.”

While the rest of the UK is bound to bring FOBT maximum stakes down…

Asia Bibi’s daughters find safety in Canada ahead of court blasphemy ruling

The Christian mother-of-five was acquitted last October after spending eight years on death row for blasphemy.

However, hard-line Islamists want her publicly executed.

Countries including Australia and Canada have signalled their willingness to offer her asylum.

Diplomatic sources have told the Telegraph that Canada is a leading contender to offer asylum to Ms Bibi if Pakistan’s most senior court dismisses a challenge against her acquittal.

After days of protests by hard-line Islamist clerics, Imran Khan agreed to allow a petition against the decision.

Ms Bibi has been forced to live under close protection in a mystery location since her 2010 conviction and death sentence was quashed.

Supporters and family members are keen for Ms Bibi to leave Pakistan as soon as possible.

Her husband and family have decided they will be unable to live safely in Pakistan if she is freed, with prominent figures and even some of her neighbours still calling for her to be killed.

Meanwhile, new research published by the Catholic Church has found there are 187 live cases of Christians in Pakistan facing blasphemy charges.

Suspects face execution or life imprisonment if found guilty.

Pope blasts ‘invisible walls’ in bringing youth festival to jail

Francis celebrated an emotional penitential liturgy inside Panama’s main youth lock-up, the Las Garzas de Pacora detention centre.

In a twist, he was also hearing the inmates’ confessions inside confessionals made by the detainees.

It is all part of Francis’s belief that prisoners deserve the same dignity as everyone else – as well as hope.

“There are no words to describe the freedom I feel in this moment,” one of the inmates, Luis Oscar Martinez, told the Pope at the start of the service.

In his homily, Francis recalled that society tends to label people good and bad, the righteous and the sinners, when it should spend its time creating opportunities for them to change.

“This attitude spoils everything, because it erects an invisible wall that makes people think that, if we marginalise, separate and isolate others, all our problems will magically be solved,” he said, again making reference to the walls that seek to divide people rather than unite them.

“When a society or community allows this, and does nothing more than complain and backbite, it enters into a vicious circle of division, blame and condemnation.”

Francis has made a tradition of visiting prisoners during his foreign visits, and has long made prison ministry part of his vocation to minister to the most marginal in society.

Last year, he…

Bishop George Bell statue to go ahead as latest abuse claims judged ‘unfounded’

Canterbury Cathedral said a planned statue of the former bishop of Chichester, who died in 1958, will be completed and placed in one of the exterior niches in the west end of the building.

Its announcement comes the day after the Church’s national safeguarding team published findings of an inquiry which found the latest allegations against Bell were “unfounded”.

Bell has been praised for helping to rescue Jewish children from Germany during the Second World War and was a supporter of the German resistance.

In a statement Canterbury Cathedral said: “A statue of George Bell, a former dean of Canterbury and later bishop of Chichester, is to be completed and installed at Canterbury Cathedral.

“Bishop Bell was dean between 1924 and 1929 and during that time founded The Friends Of Canterbury Cathedral who celebrated their 90th anniversary in 2017.

“To commemorate his work whilst in Canterbury, the statue will be placed in one of the exterior niches at the west end of the Cathedral joining those of other influential figures.”

Canterbury Cathedral said work started on the statue in 2015.

But that year the Church paid £15,000 in compensation to a women who claimed she was abused by Bell.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby welcomed the announcement on Friday.

Joyce Meyer Devotional 26 January 2019 — The Scarlet Cord

Topic: The Scarlet Cord [Joyce Meyer Devotional 26 January 2019]

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. — John 16:7

Rahab hid the spies whom Joshua had sent in to spy out the land. Because of her they were kept safe from the king who would have killed them.

Before their departure she asked them to protect her just as she had protected them.

These men told her, “Stay under the scarlet cord, and you will be safe. Not only you, but all those of your family whom you bring in with you. But if anyone gets out from under the protection of the scarlet cord, he will be destroyed” (see Joshua 2 AMPC).

Rahab obeyed their instructions and was saved from destruction (see Joshua 6:25).

The scarlet cord represents the blood of Jesus—which runs throughout the Bible. Use the blood of Jesus as a marker over you and your family. When God sees it, He will pass over you.

Prayer Starter: Father, thank You for the blood of Jesus that washes me clean from sin and protects me from harm today and every day. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Over Half of American Protestants Say They Tithe but Some Count Secular Charity Donations

(Photo: Reuters/Mark Blinch)Many U.S. Protestant churches carry out a 90-Day Challenge to encourage non-tithers to start giving regularly. (FILE)

More than half of American Protestant Christians report tithing their income. But all tithes don’t necessarily go to the church, with some Christians believing they can tithe to charities, including secular ones, according to recently released findings by LifeWay Research.

In a report released last Thursday, LifeWay noted that 54 percent of surveyed Protestants give at least 10 percent of their income to the church. Among them, 37 percent say they tithe and 17 percent say they give more than 10 percent.

One in 5 say they give regularly but they give less than 10 percent of their income. Seventeen percent say they’re not consistent with their tithing and 8 percent say it’s difficult for them to tithe due to finances.

Those more likely to tithe are those who attend services regularly.

Based off of a survey of 1,010 Americans who attend Protestant or nondenominational services at least once a month and 1,000 Protestant senior pastors, the report also found that many believe donating money to non-church entities can count as a tithe.

While 98 percent say their tithey money is directed to a church, nearly half (48 percent) say tithes…

Andrew Wommack Devotional 26 January 2019 – The Weapon Of The Word

Topic: The Weapon Of The Word [Andrew Wommack Devotional 26 January 2019]

Luke 4:4, “And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.”

Text: MT. 4:1-11; MK. 1:12-13; LK. 4:1-13

Jesus answered every temptation with, “It is written.” The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit (Eph. 6:17). It is the only offensive spiritual weapon that we have.

Since Jesus was the Word of God (Jn. 1:1), anything he would have spoken would have been the Word. He could have said “scat” and the devil would have had to go, yet He quoted the written Word of God three times.

This gives us great assurance that the written Word of God is sufficient for us. Jesus, in the face of the greatest temptations that Satan had to offer, did not need to say anything that was not already recorded in scripture.

It is likely that when Jesus returns to this earth and destroys His enemies, He will just speak the Word that has already been given in scripture. No wonder Satan tries to keep us from studying and knowing God’s Word. Even our good works will hurt us if they keep us from really knowing the scriptures.

God has given us this mighty weapon of His Word! When we speak the Word in faith, hell shakes. Satan and his minions have already experienced what the Word can do. They know its power. We need to know it, too.

TREM Devotional 26 January 2019 – Get Out of the Familiar Terrain

Topic: Get Out of the Familiar Terrain [TREM Devotional 26 January 2019]

“Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house unto the land I will shew thee”: Genesis 12:1 KJV

Country, kindred and father’s house are all familiar terrains. They are things that Abram was used to. When the Grace of God located him, he was commanded to come out of these familiar terrains. God wants you to get out of familiarity. You can’t move forward when you are always on familiar ways of doing things. ‘This is the way I know how to do it!’ In other words, you can close your eyes and still be able to do it. If that is where you are, you won’t be able to get to where you are going. God loves it when people stretch themselves into a new arena and new terrains. God loves it when you get out of the familiar.

Beloved, get out of that place where they have you figured out. Get out of what you used to know and what you are familiar with and try something new. Find out how best you can spice things up and get back the enthusiasm. Don’t fall into the routine mode: ‘That is how it is and so it will be!’ No!

One of the secrets of productivity and growth in anything is that you put yourself in a situation that will stretch your ability. You can’t know what a person can do until you stretch him.

God said to Gideon: “The Lord is with thee thou mighty man of valour” (Judges 6:12 KJV) And Gideon began to tell God how poor his family background was. A stronghold had been built into his mind that his family was poor. Not only was his family poor, even within the family background, he was the poorest. That is the foundation he had. A foundation of poverty where every member of the family was poor. And as for him, even the poor called him poor. These are some of the strongholds you must pull out of your head. But God came and stretched him. In spite of all he said to God, “…the Lord looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel”(Judges 6:14 KJV).

Our Daily Bread 26 January 2019 Devotional – Righteous Among the Nations

Topic: Righteous Among the Nations [Our Daily Bread 26 January 2019 Devotional]

Bible in a Year: Exodus 16–18; Matthew 18:1–20

For such a time as this. – Esther 4:14

Today’s Scripture & Insight: Esther 4:5-14

At Yad Vashem, the Holocaust museum in Israel, my husband and I went to the Righteous Among the Nations garden that honors the men and women who risked their lives to save Jewish people during the Holocaust. While looking at the memorial, we met a group from the Netherlands. One woman was there to see her grandparents’ names listed on the large plaques. Intrigued, we asked about her family’s story.

Members of a resistance network, the woman’s grandparents Rev. Pieter and Adriana Müller took in a two-year-old Jewish boy and passed him off as the youngest of their eight children from 1943–1945.

Moved by the story, we asked, “Did the little boy survive?” An older gentleman in the group stepped forward and proclaimed, “I am that boy!”

The bravery of many to act on behalf of the Jewish people reminds me of Queen Esther. The queen may have thought she could escape King Xerxes’s decree to annihilate the Jews around 475 bc because she had concealed her ethnicity. However, she was convinced to act—even under the threat of death—when her cousin begged her to not remain silent about her Jewish heritage because she had been placed in her position “for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14).

We may never be asked to make such a dramatic decision. However, we will likely face the choice to speak out against an injustice or remain silent; to provide assistance to someone in trouble or turn away. May God grant us courage.

Today’s Reflection
Are there those you need to speak up for? Ask God about the timing.

Seeds of Destiny 26 January 2019 Devotional – Living in the Reverential Fear of God

Topic: Living in the Reverential Fear of God [Seeds of Destiny 26 January 2019 Devotional]

Scripture: And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God: Genesis 42:18

Thought For The Day: Reverence for God makes you a reference point on Earth.

It has been established that God distinguishes people who are dedicated to Him. Therefore, understanding dedication is key to being distinguished in life.

The question is, what is dedication? Dedication to God means living in the reverential fear of God.

Now, what does it mean to live in the referential fear of God?
It is living with Respect and Regard for God (Genesis 42:18)
Living in the reverential fear of God means living with respect and regard for God and His Laws. When you have reverential fear for God, you respect God and His Word; you do not disrespect God or His Word.

Sometime ago, there was someone who was kidnapped and while in the kidnapper’s den, the kidnappers told him, ‘Look at me; let me tell you. I do not fear God, how much more man?’ Beloved, the lack of reverential fear for God made the kidnapper to look and act like the devil. To live in the reverential fear of God means to respect and honour God. For example, allowing your phone call to interrupt your prayer life is a lack of reverential fear for God. That is, those who are not dedicated to God do not fear God, they answer phone calls, text messages and even chew gum while in church service.

The question is, can you chew gum or answer a call when you are before the president of your nation? Some people even drop waste materials in church instead of putting them in the waste basket. Their behaviour confirms that they do not regard or respect God. Beloved, to be dedicated to God is to live in the reverential fear of God, and reverence for God makes you a reference point on earth

Remember this: Reverence for God makes you a reference point on Earth.

Assignments:

  1. Make reverence for God the guiding principle of your life.
  2. Do not respect people at the expense of God.

Prayer: O Lord, help me to reverence You in all that I do in life in Jesus’ Name.
