Lambeth Bridge transformed into place of prayer

XR organisers have planned to shut down key sites in central London, in addition to demonstrating outside government departments.

The protests come following what’s been described as a series of disappointing climate commitments from rich world countries at a summit in New York and a major report from the UN’s expert science panel, the IPCC, which warned of unprecedented consequences to the world’s oceans and ice systems without drastic action from governments.

Together with charities Christian Aid, Tearfund, and CAFOD, CCA are demanding the Government reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2025 and to be more transparent about the global impact of climate change on vulnerable communities.

They also want to see a citizens’ assembly established to combat the climate emergency.

CCA member Rev Helen Burnett is a vicar at St Peter & St Paul’s Chaldon in the Diocese of Southwark.

Speaking to Premier at the Lambeth Bridge protest she said a citizens’ assembly would help to protect the needs of those in poverty.

“It’s a way of divesting decision making away from the kind of combat models that we have in the House of Commons into something more cooperative, in which people are working for the common good, not for the good of the wealthiest.”

Helen says the locations of the London protests are strategic and the disruption they…

Museum of the Bible Fails to Authenticate Miniature Bible Believed to Have Gone to Space, Pulls it from Display

Museum of the Bible Fails to Authenticate Miniature Bible Believed to Have Gone to Space, Pulls it from Display

The Museum of the Bible removed one of several miniature Bibles from its display after an expert questioned whether or not it actually went to the moon with an Apollo 14 astronaut.

According to USA Today, the Apollo Prayer League gave Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell a handful of tiny Bibles to bring to the moon with him in 1971.

The museum had put a microfilm Bible, which they believed had ventured into outer space with Mitchell, on display. Later, however, the museum removed the Bible after they were unable to authenticate it.

Still on display, however, is a pocket-sized Bible donated to the museum by an Oklahoma woman who authored a book about the Apollo Prayer League.

“We know for sure that one on display right now went to the moon, but we could not verify for sure that the one we had originally on display had gone to the moon,” museum spokeswoman Heather Cirmo said in a statement. “We couldn’t disprove it, it just wasn’t certain,” she added.

Late last year, the museum also had to pull from display five fragments believed to be from various Dead Sea scrolls.

According to Religion News Service, the museum, which is owned by Hobby Lobby President Steve Green and his family, removed the fragments after suspicion that they were forgeries was confirmed. The museum replaced the fragments with others…

42 schools ditch Christian assemblies

Currently all state funded schools in England and Wales are legally required to hold a daily act of worship of a ‘broadly Christian nature’.

It’s been reported that 42 schools have successfully applied to their local Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE) board to opt out of the collective worship in the past three years, with many requesting to hold “multi-faith” assemblies instead.

Rev Steven Terry from the Accord Coalition for Inclusive Education told Premier it is culturally inappropriate to require children of all faiths and none to adhere to this law.

“I think this is very welcome news. I only wish that more schools were doing it.

“We live in an increasingly diverse society and to have a situation where we’re still required by law to offer a daily act of worship of a broadly Christian character is, I think increasingly inappropriate, given how many different cultures and different faiths systems are now represented in our society today.”

Terry was optimistic that Christianity still had a presence within schools but went on to say that an exposure to different beliefs provides a realistic and balanced education for children.

“We’re not taking Christianity out of the school place. By doing this, we’re certainly allotting it a proper place within the context of a multi faith community.

“One shouldn’t feel threatened as a Christian by having other…

Republican Lawmaker Spearheads House Resolution Classifying Pornography as ‘Public Health Hazard’

Republican Lawmaker Spearheads House Resolution Classifying Pornography as ‘Public Health Hazard’

A Republican lawmaker is battling to have pornography classed as a “public health hazard.”

Republican Jena Powell has spearheaded House Resolution 180, which argues that pornography is a “public health hazard with statewide and national public health impacts leading to a broad spectrum of individual and societal harms.”

Citing the negative health and relational effects of consuming pornography, Powell also highlights the clear links between pornographic production and sex trafficking.

“We are saying enough is enough. We’re tired of the exploitation of women and children in Ohio,” she told Dayton Daily News.

Speaking to CBN News, Powell added that some “88% of pornography shows violence towards women, and of that 88%, 95% of it shows a positive or neutral reaction from women.”

“It’s increasing a culture of violence,” she added.

But Powell is not alone in this fight against the sordid porn industry, which turns over a staggering $90+ billion of revenue a year.

Lawmakers who have put their name to the non-binding resolution include Nino Vitale, R-Urbana; Candice Keller, R-Middletown; Kyle Koehler, R-Springfield; George Lang, R-West Chester Twp.; Bill Dean, R-Xenia, and J. Todd Smith, R-Farmersville.

But criticism of pornographic material is also being issued from the other side of the political aisle. Indeed,…

Bishops offer ‘Christian response’ to Brexit

In an open letter to every church, school and chaplaincy in the Diocese of Oxford they say it is a critical moment in our national life.

Signed by Rt Rev Steven Croft, Rt Rev Alan Wilson, Rt Rev Colin Fletcher and Ven Olivia Graham, the letter says that while the government has done a great deal to ensure a smooth Brexit, we all have a role to play in ensuring our country thrives.

“There is an important role at this time for practical expressions of love and hope by communities and individuals,” they suggest.

Recognising the division across the country that comes from Brexit, the bishops state: “Our nation is divided about our future relationship in Europe.

“Our calling as the Church in these times is not to take sides in this debate but to continue to be the Church for everyone.

“There are leavers and remainers in every congregation, but this can never be our primary identity as Christians.”

In response, the bishops have suggested 12 ways to love our neighbours in the coming weeks.

These include giving more to foodbanks, showing friendship and hospitality to EU nationals and looking out for the lonely, the anxious and the vulnerable.

Christians are also encouraged to pray in both public and private.

The list of 12 has been made into a poster which is free to download from the Diocese’s website.

Stay up to date with the…

NFL player fined for wearing ‘Man of God’ headband: The key to transformative courage

New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis wears a “Man of God” headband during an NFL game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 15, 2019.

Arizona, Oakland, Green Bay, Buffalo, and Indianapolis all scored upset wins in yesterday’s pro football action. Baseball’s playoffs continue, hockey has started, and basketball is around the corner.

But an NFL game played on September 22 is on my mind this morning. When the New Orleans Saints played the Seattle Seahawks, Saints linebacker Demario Davis wore a headband matching the team’s colors bearing the words, “Man of God.”

Here’s the problem: NFL rules prohibit players from displaying social, political, patriotic, memorial, or charitable messages during games. Even though his headband wasn’t visible beneath his helmet, Davis was fined $7,017 for a first-offense uniform violation.

Davis sees the fine as a positive: “Nobody wants to lose money, but I think any time that the conversation about God is brought up, especially in these times, I think it’s always a positive or silver lining. If He can get glory from it, I think He can get glory from it whether I personally wear the headband or don’t wear the headband. He’s always going to be in control of the whole situation. We’re still all good.”

In fact, Davis plans to market the headbands and donate the proceeds to charity or to a Christian organization. “I’m hoping to put it out where fans can wear it,” he said, “and I can wear it through them.”

“I’ve never been hesitant with my faith.”

I’ve often said that God redeems all he allows. If the NFL had not fined Demario Davis for his “Man of God” headband, we would probably not be talking about his faith today.

For Davis, such redemption is his life story. He has made his priorities clear: “I put God first, I put my family second and I put football third.”

Growing up in Mississippi, Davis says he got into some trouble and got…

The Biggest Demographic Churches Are Missing ThomRainer.com

By Thom Rainer

Our churches did well in reaching the agrarian culture. We gave the farmers time to get the chores done and get to church by 11:00 am. Unfortunately, this culture began to wane around 1860 with the onset of the railroad and industrial age.

Most of our churches have worship services for the farmers who no longer exist.

We haven’t changed a lot in the past 160 years. I guess life moves slowly for a lot of churches.

In the meantime, a dramatic shift is taking place in the American workplace. More people are working on weekends, many of them on Sundays, than ever before. But most churches haven’t moved their worship day at all. It’s still on Sunday mornings.

We keep hoping the farmers will show up.

While I would not advocate abandoning Sunday worship, I wonder why so few churches offer a non-Sunday alternative. There is a huge demographic we are missing: those working on the weekends. Consider these issues:

According to a 2016 time study conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 34 percent of the workforce works on the weekend. Do the numbers. The U. S. workforce is approximately 160 million. That means over 54 million work on the weekend. Please read the preceding sentence again. 54 million. That’s staggering.

  • If someone works either day, Saturday or Sunday, they are not likely to attend Sunday services. For Saturday workers, Sunday becomes their day off after a tough work schedule.
  • The reasons for not doing weeknight services are rarely theological. If you have a biblical…

How Hong Kong Christians say we should pray for protests

Thousands of people in Hong Kong have been protesting for weeks for their ‘five demands’ – including the end to the extradition bill, which has been dropped, but would have allowed Hong Kong criminals who committed a crime in China to be extradited there, comprimising Hong Kong’s autonomous agreement with China.

The bill has been declared ‘dead’ by Hong Kong’s leader Carrie Lam but the protests encapsulate a greater theme of Hong Kong people wanting more of a say over their laws.

Having started over three months ago, the pro-democracy demonstrations have turned more dangerous recently, with a teenager being shot on Friday night and protesters defying a new law not to wear masks.

Karen Chu, a Christian student in Hong Kong told Premier: “When there’s demonstrations going on, the best thing to do is just stay home.”

Karen has not been involved in the protests but said: “At the beginning there are quite a lot of Christians that were going out and singing the song ‘Sing Hallelujah to the Lord’, or otherwise participating, but recently they got a lot more violent and so most of the Christians I know have not been going out and doing those things.

“I do know some people that have escalated their actions as these protests escalate, but I think most Christians decided that this has gone too violent and illegal and they don’t want to take part too much in it. We still…

Prince Harry praises work of Christian charity

Prince Harry visited Dirico in southern Angola to support the HALO Trust, an organisation that began rehabilitation work in the country in 1994 by clearing landmines.

HALO reports to have removed over 100,000 landmines to date but consider their work far from finished.

The Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF), a Christian charity that provides flights and medical attention to people in remote areas, provide flights to the HALO team to help them clear the landmines.

When Prince Harry visited them, he told MAF pilot Marijn Goud: “HALO could not do it without you, thanks!”

Mr Gould, a Christian who lives in Angola with his wife and two kids, wrote on Facebook: “Today was a slightly different day. Went to a minefield in the morning, saw HRH Prince Harry detonate a mine, had a chat with him and flew a team of very hard working HALO de-miners back home. During the event MAF was on standby for medical evacuations. We are very proud to be partnering with this great organization, working hard to make Angola land mine free in 2025.”

The Duke of Sussex walked on an active minefield with body armour and remotely detonated a landmine to remove it from the field. He then visited Huambo, the site that his mother Princess Diana was famously photographed in wearing similar body armour in 1997.

Her visit brought international attention to the cause, and the impact on those who live in…

Digital counters to come in at 40 churches to count people coming in

Currently the only data gathered is from visitor books and figures counted by church wardens on Sundays.

These are thought to seriously underestimate the number of visitors and tourists who visit churches and chapels throughout the whole week.

The Great Church Visitor Count, run by the National Churches Trust, will analyse the difference between the number of entries recorded in a church visitor book and the actual number of visitors who pass through the door.

Ten counters are already installed, including St Peter at Heversham, Cumbria; St James at Jacobstowe, Devon; St Matthews at Skegness, Lincolnshire; St Mary at Lydiard Tregoze, Wiltshire and St Augustines at Hedon, Yorkshire.

30 more counters will be installed at churches and chapels in Wales and Herefordshire later in 2019.

The counters, attached to the porch, will record the number of visitors they have over two years, with initial results of the research being released in 2020 and a full report in 2021.

To increase the range of data available, the National Churches Trust is asking churches to install their own digital counters and to collaborate in the research project.

Any churches that already have digital counters are also invited to share their data with the research project.

National Churches Trust Chief Executive Claire Walker says: “Our Great Church Visitor Count project will help churches in a number…
