“This is the first time we have seen this level of mistrust in the DRC,” said Dr Emmanuel Mbuna Badjonga, based at the heart of the affected area in North Kivu province and supported by the Christian charity CAFOD.

The number of people infected with Ebola since last August has passed 2,000, with more than 1,300 deaths, making this outbreak the second worst in history. It took 224 days to reach 1,000 cases, but only 71 days to double to 2,000.

“Up to yesterday (4th June), we were seeing 12 new cases a day,” said Dr Badjonga. “So far we have kept the disease out of the main towns in the area, Butembo and Beni, but we can’t treat people if they refuse to accept that Ebola exists.

“The most important thing is to raise awareness of Ebola any way we can, through verbal messages, billboards, posters, on the radio and through the churches.”

The deadliest Ebola epidemic caused over 11,000 deaths between 2013 and 2016 in three West African countries.

Health workers struggled to convince people of the need to avoid contact with victims of the disease, and rumours spread that bodies were being taken away for sinister purposes, according to CAFOD.

Similar obstacles are now being encountered in the DRC, said Dr Badjonga.

North Kivu, an area plagued by fighting among armed factions, has seen several attacks on health workers.

The pontiff first voiced his concerns about the wording in 2017, and called for the line “lead us not into temptation” to be altered to reflect that it is not God that tempts us to sin.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster TV2000 last year, he said: “It is not a good translation because it speaks of a God who induces temptation.

The line has now been re-written to say “do not let us fall into temptation”, following approval by the General Assembly of the Episcopal Conference of Italy on 22nd May.

The revised prayer will appear in the third edition of the Messale Ramano, the liturgical book that contains the guiding texts for Mass in the Roman Catholic Church.

Anglican and Protestant Bible translations will not be affected by the change.

Harry Read took part in a tandem jump with the Red Devils after a display of some 280 parachutists in Sannerville on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Read and John Hutton, 94, took off from Duxford in Cambridgeshire and flew over to France, landing in fields overlooked by poppies which was the original drop zone for the 8th (Midlands) Parachute Battalion, who went on to destroy bridges in a bid to restrict German movements during the missions.

They were the first two out of a Cessna aircraft at between 800ft and 1,000ft followed by a 5,000 sq ft Union Flag.

But their jump was in danger of being cancelled after being fraught with delays and technical difficulties when there was a problem with civilian Dakota aircraft “availability”.

When another aircraft was found it was a race against time to get into French airspace in time in order to get clearance from the authorities to land.
