Jesus Army will ‘cease to exist’

Members voted over the weekend to revoke the Church’s constitution.

It means its National Leadership Team will step down from roles once the winding up has been completed. The independent congregations will then appoint their own leaders who will be responsible for finance, staffing, and safeguarding.

The Church blamed a badly damaged reputation, declining membership and a slowdown in giving for the closure.

In a statement posted on the Church website, an apology was given for the “faults and failures” which have had a profound impact on many people’s lives.

It said: “We are deeply sorry for, and appalled by the abuse that has taken place within Jesus Fellowship Church and the New Creation Christian Community (NCCC) and offer our heartfelt sympathy and unreserved apology to all those affected.

“Children and vulnerable people were entitled to expect full protection from harm. We acknowledge the pain many of those people continue to feel. As things have become clearer to us, we are grieved and deeply troubled.”

Back in 2013, the Church invited members to come forward with personal experiences with many making disclosures of pastoral abuse and bullying as well as financial, physical and sexual abuse.

Historic allegations were passed on to police and a number of prosecutions were brought.

The Church has been working with Christian safeguarding charity Thirtyone:Eight over…

Southern Baptist Church Attendance Hits 30-Year Low

Southern Baptist Church Attendance Hits 30-Year Low

While there has been an unexpected resurgence in giving, the Southern Baptists are hemorrhaging church members, culminating in 30-year low attendance numbers.

According to the denomination’s Annual Church Profile, membership tumbled down to 14.8 million in 2018 — which is the first time it has dipped below 15 million since 1989. Though the overall giving elevated to a healthy $11.8 billion, the SBC is rightly concerned by the latest figures, which indicate a sizeable exodus of members.

“Facts are our friends, even when the facts themselves are unfriendly,” tweetedSouthwestern Baptist Theological Seminary President, Adam Greenway. “Heartbreaking to see these ACP declines. We must do better as Southern Baptists. God help us.”

For the past decade or so, the number of people baptized in the Southern Baptist denomination has also been falling steadily – down to 246,000 baptisms a year. Shockingly, that number is about the same as was recorded back in the 1940s when the SBC was a fraction of its current size.

“Like many, I am discouraged to see 7,000 less baptisms this year,” the president of the SBC, J. D. Greear, told Christianity Today. “It is the Lord who saves, but this information should spur us on even more to be intentional in evangelism.”

Though the baptism numbers are disappointing for a denomination that is centered around seeing lives transformed by…

Tory ‘clean campaign’ pledge praised by Christians in Politics

Health Secretary Matt Hancock, former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, international development secretary Rory Stewart and Home Secretary Sajid Javid have agreed to not “speak ill of fellow Conservatives”.

In the hope of unifying their party, the Tory leadership contenders have also pledged to “not engage in personality attacks on others” and “stick strictly to the spending limits”.

Christians in Politics launched a similar campaign ‘Disagree Well’ before the EU referendum, which urged people to consider their approach to political division.

Speaking to Premier, Christians in Politics executive director, Andy Flannagan said: “It’s all very well to talk about disagreeing well, it’s all very well to try and be more polite in our public discourse.

“But actually, you can only really truly disagree well, if you’re building good relationships with people that will allow you to disagree well.”

Andy said this shouldn’t prevent the public knowing the character of a potential leader.

“To talk about the character of our leaders is really important, but I think there are ways of doing that,” he said.

“And there are humble ways of doing that in a way that doesn’t necessarily take someone down.”

Following Theresa May’s announcement to resign as Prime Minister on Monday, there are currently eleven contenders in the Tory party leadership contest.

Christians in Politics hopes the…

Indiana Megachurch Establishes Volunteer-Run Campuses Inside Prison, Correctional Facility

Indiana Megachurch Establishes Volunteer-Run Campuses Inside Prison, Correctional Facility

Indiana megachurch Emmanuel Church is making waves in a local prison and correctional facilities by launching several campuses within the high-security gates.

Men and women who have struggled with addiction or are sentenced to years behind bars are finding Christ through the services. And, according to Rachel Long, the executive pastor of multisite and families with the nondenominational church, the best part about it all is that it’s volunteer-run.

“The way that we view it is that they can’t come to Christ inside these dark places without someone having the courage to go in,” Long told the Christian Post. “The thing that is most inspiring to me as a pastor is each one of those [microsites] is completely run by our impact [volunteer] team.”

The church has seen encouraging results. Fifteen inmates have given their lives to Christ for the first time and “countless others” have recommitted their lives to Christ. The impact team, which consists of 25 church volunteers, attend monthly equipping meetings on how to share the gospel and continue to love the inmates.

Launched in January of this year, these “microsite” campuses, that closely resemble the services at Emmanuel, are held in the Johnson County Jail, Johnson County Community Corrections work-release center and the Theodora House, a women’s recovery center run by…

Who is the Christian comedian John Archer on Britain’s Got Talent?

The live shows, which have been going on all week, start at 7:30pm on ITV and will feature John Archer on Wednesday.

The contestant, who turns 59 on the day of his next performance, merges comedy with magic, something he has been doing for years before auditioning for the reality show.

He has performed at the Christian festival Spring Harvest and visited churches, entertaining congregations with magic tricks and speaking about his faith.

In the first round of the talent show Archer told the judges he ahd long considered auditioning: “I have thought about it and I’ve chickened out and so I got to the point this year where I thought, ‘face your fears and do it’ and so I’m here.”

If he gets through, he will be in the Britain’s Got Talent final, vying to be part of the Royal Variety Performance in front of the Queen.

The comedian has spoken previously in interviews about how he came to faith after dating a Christian girl who dragged him along to church and later met a Christian friend at Art college who led him to committing to Christ.

Franklin Graham Calls for Day of Prayer for President Trump on June 2

Franklin Graham Calls for Day of Prayer for President Trump on June 2

In an email and Facebook post, Franklin Graham has asked Christians across the nation to pray for President Trump on June 2.

“Along with 250+ Christian leaders, I am asking followers of Christ across our nation to set aside next Sunday, June 2, as a special day of prayer for the President, Donald J. Trump,” the president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association said in his Facebook post. “President Trump’s enemies continue to try everything to destroy him, his family, and the presidency. In the history of our country, no president has been attacked as he has. I believe the only hope for him, and this nation, is God.”

The 250+ leaders signed a statement of faith for June 2. Each leader has committed to pray that “God would protect, strengthen, embolden and direct [Donald J. Trump].”

Some of these leaders include Senior Pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship Greg Laurie, former State Rep. Michele Bachmann, and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.

Graham continued his plea in his Facebook post: “This is a critical time for America. We’re on the edge of a precipice. Time is short. We need to pray for God to intervene. We need to ask God to protect, strengthen, encourage, and guide the President. We know that God hears and answers prayer. He can soften hearts and change minds. He is all-powerful, and He rules over the affairs of…

Four killed in fresh attack by militants on Burkina Faso church

A heavily armed gang on Sunday attacked a congregation as they worshipped in a church in the town of Toulfe, 240 km north-west of the capital Ouagadougou.

Barnabas Fund reported that local sources said the attack “caused panic in the village and many residents sought cover in their homes or in the bush”.

The latest attack brings the total death toll of Christians attacked by militants since 28th April to 20.

The terror began when a pastor, his son and four members of the congregation were executed after refusing to deny their Christian faith and convert to Islam.

Authorities said gunmen attacked a Catholic church in Dablo, about 200 kilometres from the capital and killed a priest and five worshippers, before setting fire to a health centre and destroying a shop that served alcohol.

Four people taking part in a church parade in Zimtenga were killed a day later.

The West African country has been increasingly destabilised by jihadists from across the border in Mali.

Muslim Employer in Pakistan Kills Christian Farmhand for Working Elsewhere, Relatives Say

Muslim Employer in Pakistan Kills Christian Farmhand for Working Elsewhere, Relatives Say

LAHOREPakistan, May 28, 2019 (Morning Star News) – A Muslim landlord outside Faisalabad, Pakistan tortured a worker to death for daring, as a “lowly Christian,” to work for another employer, relatives said.

Javed Masih, a Catholic in Nulka Kohala village, a suburb of Faisalabad in Punjab Province, on May 10 had sought a 10,000-rupee loan (US$66) from his employer, Chaudhry Abbas Jutt, for medical treatment for his physically handicapped, 6-year-old son, Masih’s wife said.

“The landlord not only refused to give Javed the money, he also admonished him for not paying back 5,000 rupees [US$33] that he owed him,” Ghazala Javed, 25, told Morning Star News.

When Jutt refused, her husband approached another landlord in the village, Chaudhry Muhammad Tariq Jutt, and obtained a 25,000-rupee loan (US$166) for working his land. In Pakistan, workers obtain loans at excessive interest while working at artificially low wages, ensuring a cycle of debt and dependence.

On the morning of May 16, Abbas Jutt summoned Masih to his house for “settling his account,” Ghazala Javed said.

“My husband went to Jutt’s house along with his nephew Saleem Masih, telling us that they would return in an hour after paying back the debt,” she said. “However, Saleem returned home after half an hour. He said that Jutt had sent him back, saying that he needed…

Eritrean Bishops call for ‘peace and reconciliation’

Following the country’s independence in 1993, the one-part state has continued to suffer from conflict and severe drought, making it one of Africa’s poorest countries.

The UN’s Refugee Agency, UNHCR, reported that more than a fifth of Eritrea’s six-million people have fled, where indefinite military service is compulsory for all men.

According to Human Rights Watch, thousands are being held in prison without trial for holding contrary views to the government.

Violence and exploitation is causing ‘massive fleeing abroad’ according to the bishops, as many seek asylum overseas.

They are urging for a ban on hate speech, in an effort to restore peace.

The bishops’ plan is proposing to ‘establish a national commission to campaign for truth and reconciliation’ and to remove factors of tension and promote conversation and compromise.

Their pastoral letter stated: “At a time like this, when the country goes through severe tests, it needs more than ever an intervention of God.”

They concluded that through this plan they hope to achieve: “the fulfilment of our dream of an Eritrea united, reconciled and founded on peace and justice”.

The two major religions of Eritrea are Christianity and Islam, with a roughly 50% split.

Release of Imprisoned Christian Offers Hope for Justice for Wrongfully Convicted in India

Release of Imprisoned Christian Offers Hope for Justice for Wrongfully Convicted in India

NEW DELHI, May 28, 2019 (Morning Star News) – When police took Gornath Chalanseth from his home in eastern India early on the morning of Dec. 13, 2008, he assumed they only wanted to question him over minor political activity in his capacity as a member of the local village council.

Except for two brief releases on bail, he would spend the next nearly 10 and a half years in jail for the murder of a Hindu leader that Hindu nationalists falsely accused him and six other Christians of committing.

At the police station that December day in 2008, the officers put Chalanseth in a police van and drove off. When he did not return after a few days, his family asked after him. They were told that the had been taken to the jungle along with Christian suspects Bijay Kumar Sanseth, Bhaskar Sunamajhi, and Budhadeb Nayak.

Later they heard that he and six other Christians had been charged with the murder of Laxmanananda Saraswati. The Hindu leader’s Aug. 23, 2008 murder by a mob of 30 to 40 assailants with automatic weapons and locally-made revolvers led to a misguided backlash in the following months – India’s largest anti-Christian violence. More than 100 people were killed, around 300 church buildings were destroyed, close to 6,000 homes were demolished and at least 55,000 Christians were displaced from their homes.

Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda claimed…
