Don’t judge single adopters says Christian charity

The number of single parents who adopted last year was 962, compared to 904 in 2017.

Experts believe the reasons for this are two fold, firstly, due to societal changes, making it more ‘acceptable’ for single parent families to adopt.

The second reason suggested is what is being called the ‘Jolie effect’ with single celebrities adopting children.

The findings have been welcomed by Dr Krish Kandiah, founder of Christian charity, Home for Good, which aims to make fostering and adoption a significant part of the life and ministry of the Church.

Speaking to Premier, he said: “We think, overall it is a fantastic thing and it gives us and the Church an opportunity to wrap around those families, whether they are single adopters or couples, because adoption is a tough thing for people to take on.

“Most of the children coming forward for adoption have had a pretty difficult life story so far.

“There are lots of children, over, 2,730 children just in England alone, waiting to be adopted.

“The longer these children wait, the worse their outcomes are. So it’s fantastic that people are coming forward.

“In fact, Home for Good has had a large increase in the number of people coming forward, particularly in their 20s.

“Both single adopters and married couples are coming forward.

Some question whether single parents can provide a full and stable life compared to two-parent…

Gillette Ad Shows Father Teaching Transgender Son How to Shave

Gillette Ad Shows Father Teaching Transgender Son How to Shave

A new Gillette ad showing a father teaching his transgender son how to shave has been viewed more than 1 million times on Facebook and ignited a social media debate.

The ad shows Toronto’s Samson Bonkeabantu Brown – who was born female – talking about transgenderism.

“I always knew I was different,” Brown says. “I didn’t know that there was a term for the type of person that I was. I went into my transition just wanting to be happy. I’m glad I’m at the point where I’m able to shave.”

The ad then shows Brown standing over a bathroom sink, holding a razor. Brown’s father gives instructions: “Now, don’t be scared. Shaving is about being confident.”

Brown says: “I’m at the point in my manhood where I’m actually happy.”

“It’s not just myself transitioning,” Brown says. “It’s everybody around me transitioning.”

Viewers then read a message from Gillette: “Whenever, wherever, however it happens. Your first shave is special.”

About 3,000 people commented on Gillette’s Facebook page. Some were positive.

“Been buying your products for the past few years,” one person wrote… you’ve just earned yourself a loyal customer for LIFE!!!”

Others, though, said Gillette should have stayed on the sidelines in the transgender debate.

“I won’t be buying Gillette ever again,” one person…

Alexa helps Church of England engage with tens of thousands

Since last year, the devices, which allow users to ask ‘Alexa’ to play music, do the shopping or give trivia, can now say prayers, answer questions on faith and even tell you where your nearest church is.

Over the past twelve months, 75,000 questions have been asked to the Church.

Unpacking the figures on Premier’s News Hour, the Church of England’s head of digital Adrian Harris, said: “We’ve been thrilled with the number of people that have used the skill over the last year, and also the really broad range of users that have engaged with it from people who perhaps can’t get to church, the older generations, but also families, and those who are open and exploring their faith.”

The skill has a score of 4.2 out of five stars on the official store.

New data has revealed requests are more frequent in the evening and the most common made to Alexa are to say a prayer or explore the Christian faith.

The Church is now developing new content to meet the needs of users.

Explaining further, Adrian Harris said: “I think one of the really interesting trends we’ve seen is how people are using it to access daily content – not just prayers, but also daily reflections, which are three to four minute pieces with a prayer, a reflection and a Bible passage especially throughout Lent and Easter.

“We’re working with Thy Kingdom Come and we’ve worked with Church House Publishing to get…

Tornadoes Level Entire Communities in Indiana and Ohio

Tornadoes Level Entire Communities in Indiana and Ohio

Devastating tornadoes ripped through Ohio and Indiana into the early morning hours of Tuesday, leaving trails of wreckage behind them and millions without power.

According to The Guardian, several tornadoes ripped through Dayton, Ohio, Monday night and into early Tuesday morning, leveling entire communities.

Reportedly the storms caused heavy debris especially in areas where two tornadoes followed each other closely and at one point even crossed paths. Highway crews were reportedly using snowplows to move debris from an interstate.

The storms have left some five million people without power as of Tuesday morning and a least a half a dozen communities suffered severe damage across eastern Indiana and central Ohio. Dayton Power said in a Tweet Tuesday morning that some 64,000 of their customers were without power. They did not know when the power would be restored, but they wrote that it would be a “multi-day restoration effort.”

Dayton residents are also being encouraged to conserve water, as water plants and pump stations in the area are also without power.

According to MSNBC, in Kokomo, Indiana – where a Starbucks was completely leveled by one of the tornadoes – winds were as high as 138mph when the twister first touched down.

Armed Gunmen Kidnap 19 Christians, Kill One in Kaduna State, Nigeria

Armed Gunmen Kidnap 19 Christians, Kill One in Kaduna State, Nigeria

JOSNigeria, May 27, 2019 (Morning Star News) – Suspected Fulani herdsmen stormed a church choir practice and kidnapped 17 Christians in north-central Nigeria the night of May 18, and the same night gunmen killed a Christian and kidnapped two others at a Baptist church, sources said.

Each attack took place in Kaduna state, where assaults on Christians with impunity have recently ramped up in the increasingly lawless country.

In Dankande village, in the Dogon Dawa area of Birnin Gwari County 120 kilometers (75 miles) west of the city of Kaduna, the gunmen attacked Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) after midnight, at 12:30 a.m. on May 19, as a combined choir made up of members of two churches was at a 9 p.m.-to-1 a.m. rehearsal, one of the choir members said.

“As we were in the church, Fulani herdsmen numbering over 20 just surrounded the church and started shooting,” Ezekiel Ishaya told Morning Star News. “Everybody was terrified, but there was no way we could run because they had already surrounded the church. They were asking for the pastor’s house, and they threatened to shoot us if we don’t show them the house. Some of them went to the pastor’s house while others kept watch over us.”

The Rev. Nathaniel Waziri, chairman, of the ECWA Zaria District Church Council, confirmed in a press statement on Thursday (May 23) that the gunmen kidnapped the…

Speedy driver saved by ‘Holy Spirit’ as camera fails to reveal identity

In a light hearted post on Facebook, local police said the ‘Holy Spirit’ placed his symbol, a dove, to prevent the driver getting caught last week.

“We have understood the sign and leave the racer in peace this time,” the statement said. “However, we associate with it the hope that the protected racer understands this ‘hint from above’ as well and drives appropriately in the future.”

The driver was caught travelling at 54 kmph in a 30 zone in Viersen near Dusseldorf.

They would normally have been fined €105 (£92).

In a direct message to the bird in question, police said she too should have been fined for speeding but grace was being shown as officers did not know where she needed to be in time for Pentecost.

CofE asset management report reveals shocking pay gap

This means that the highest paid worker at the organisation that manages the assets of the Church received 23 times more than the lowest earner.

The Church paid record bonuses of more than £1m in 2018 to the asset managers who look after its wealth.

In the same year, Archbishop Justin Welby condemned wealth inequality when he sat on the Commission on Economic Justice.

Speaking last year at the launch of the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) economic justice commission report, Archbishop Justin said: “Everyone is better off when the rewards of the economy are more fairly shared.

“So a core message of the Commission is that a fairer economy is a stronger economy.

“But redistributing the results of economic growth is no longer sufficient to confront the challenges of today’s economy.

“Justice must be ‘hard-wired’ into the processes of production and consumption – in the labour market, in corporate governance and the ownership of assets, and in the rules of the market.”

The commission insists that it manages the Church’s £8.2 billion investment fund “responsibly and ethically”.

A spokesperson for the Church Commissioners told the Daily Mail: “Despite a challenging market environment, the commissioners produced a positive return and our tenth year of positive returns.”

Tourist trade drops following Notre Dame fire

Restaurant and gift shop owners on the Île de la Cité have reported a significant decrease in sales following the fire last month and are calling on the government to intervene.

With many local traders claiming a 70% drop in revenue and some being forced to close their doors for weeks at a time, the economy minister, Bruno Le Maire held a meeting last week to address the problem.

According to The Times, Mr Le Maire has said between 25 and 30 businesses have suffered ‘considerable losses, sometimes as much as 100%’.

He said: “For all these businesses, which are often family-run, I am proposing very direct and very personalised help.”

A second meeting is set to take place next month.

The tourism slump is in part due to the decision made by The Paris Council to close the Notre Dame forecourt and surrounding streets after the blaze.

Mr Le Maire said the government may consider delays to tax payments and possible compensation to support struggling traders.

Restoration of the cathedral is expected to take five years according to President Macron, but many architects suspect the work will take much longer.

Some are asking for plans to be made to draw tourists back to the area and allow prayers to continue on the Notre Dame forecourt during the restoration period.
