Call for more diversity within Church leadership answered

Thirteen senior clergy this week completed the inaugural Bishop Wilfred Wood Leadership Programme, which aims to position experienced Black, Asian and minority (BAME), for senior roles in the Church of England.

Ven Amatu Onundu Christian-Iwuagwu is the vicar in charge of St Mary the Virgin Church, in the London Borough of Hillingdon and was persuaded by the Bishop of Wilsden to take part in the programme.

He told Premier why he initially questioned the nature of the programme: “The first thing that came to my mind was whether this was a patronising way of the institution trying to say ‘the BAME people are not well equipped for senior leadership so therefore we need to beef them up with something else’.”

However, he said Rt Rev Pete Broadbent told him that the course acknowledges that the Church has “problems within the system and the process in which senior leadership is appointed”.

While the last census showed an increase in the number of people of BAME identifying as Christian, in the Diocese of London currently just 5 per cent of clergy and priests responsible for parishes are from BAME backgrounds.

The proportion is similarly low for senior post-holders across the whole Church of England.

Dioceses of London

The programme is led by the Diocese of London and this year’s attracted participants from eight Dioceses across the country, and…

Gospel for Asia Confronts Epidemic of Missing Girls in Africa and Asia

Gospel for Asia Confronts Epidemic of Missing Girls in Africa and Asia

Gospel for Asia released a shocking new report the week after Mother’s Day detailing the tragic reality that there are 100 million fewer women in Africa and Asia than there should be.

In the words of the report, they “simply do not exist.” Sex trafficking, inadequate healthcare for pregnant women, poor nutrition for young girls, female infanticide and sex-selective abortion all contribute to the crisis, as the ministry details in their report “One Million Missing Women.”

On average, there are 105 male births for every 100 female births around the world. However, In Asia and Africa, there are 106 males for every 100 females. While this may not appear to be a significant difference, but when by the billions of people who in Africa and Asia, the numbers are startling. “100 Million Missing Women,” tells the stories behind the numbers.

A press release summarizing the content of the report highlights several troubling trends. First, sex-selective abortion and “abortions that go wrong” contribute to the 100 million missing women. In cultures that highly value sons and devalue daughters, sex-selective abortions and female infanticide are rampant. In addition, in food insecure families with a daughter and a son, parents often overfeed the son while neglecting to adequately feed the daughter.

Gospel for Asia’s founder, Dr. K.P. Yohannan, explained the…

‘A sense of public duty that never wavered’, Archbishop of Canterbury praises Theresa May following resignation

This morning, Theresa May made an announcement outside Downing Street, telling the world she would be stepping down as Conservative leader on Friday, June 7.

The head of the Church of England tweeted a series of messages, praising her for showing “determination, resilience and a sense of public duty that has never wavered”.

He said: “That is a service to us all that deserves our admiration and gratitude.”

He also asked people to take a moment to “pause and pray for her and her husband, Philip, whose support has been unwavering, and for all those around them working to ensure a smooth transition into new leadership.”

The Prime Minister talked about her “deep regret” that she had not been able to deliver Brexit.

Mrs May said, however, that she was “right to persevere” with her withdrawal agreement, “even when the odds against success seemed high”.

The Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn has said whoever does take over should call a general election.

Backing the claim on Premier’s News Hour, Christian Labour MP, Stephen Timms said: “We will press for a general election and I think that would be the right thing.

“I think the country needs to have the chance to say, is this the person who we want to lead the country over the next few years?”

“We need to be frank the premiership has not been a success.

“It’s difficult to work…

Unplanned Blocked from Distribution in Canada

Unplanned Blocked from Distribution in Canada

Pro-Life box office success Unplanned has been banned from Canada after major film distributors refused to circulate the film.

According to the Christian Post, two of Canada’s largest film distributors – Landmark and Cineplex – do not have any intentions of showing PureFlix’s Unplanned in Canadian theaters.

The movie’s official Twitter account announced the ban on Wednesday noting that Canada’s rejection of the movie was only the beginning. They wrote, “Canada banned #UnPlanned. Now other nations are moving towards rejecting the film. But in less than a month, you’ve donated over $30,000 to help #WhatAbbySaw reach the world. How long til we make it 1M, & can fund an unorthodox leap to the global audience?”

According to LifeSite News, the film’s writer and director Chuck Konzelman noted that Cineplex’s rejection was a major blow for the film’s success in Canada. He said, “In Canada, Cineplex basically has monopolistic power… the National Post mentions them as controlling nearly 80 percent of all movie screens, and from our limited experience, they…

Vicar soars to dizzying heights to raise church funds

Rev Jo Musson, vicar of Sant Georges Church, Worcester and St John Baptist, Claines flew 1,000 feet in the air, attached to the top wing of a 1940’s Boeing Stearman Biplane.

The 59 year old was supported by friends, family and members of her congregation, as she flew at 80mph over RFC Rendcomb Airfield in Cirencester last week.

Recalling her experience she said: “It was the most beautiful day, blue sky and not a hint of any breeze or cloud, just plenty of sunshine.

“The sense of achievement was wonderful.”

The money raised from Rev Musson’s ‘Wing Walk’ will go towards the Claines Church 20/20 Vision Project – to provide better facilities for church visitors.

Following inspiration from friend and fellow vicar Rev Maureen Dew and her ongoing battle with Lymphoma, ten per cent of the sponsorship will go towards cancer research charity, Bloodwise.

Quoting Psalm 34, Reverend Musson shared how her faith in God helped her to face her fears.

She added: “Looking back it was as though on the day I was anaesthetised from the fear and anxiety I had expected, and held securely by God.

“It just shows what you can do, what you can overcome in God’s strength.”

The crowdfunded initiative has already reached nearly £7,000 and Rev Musson is hopeful she’ll meet the £10,000 target.

Stay…

As Controversy Swirls, Christian Attorney Speaks Out on Faith and Politics

As Controversy Swirls, Christian Attorney Speaks Out on Faith and Politics

Controversy has swirled around National Review columnist David French since he charged Franklin Graham with “hypocrisy.” Now he responds in an interview.

No one can dispute that President Donald Trump has disrupted national politics to a greater degree than any figure in many years.

His source of greatest support is no secret. According to Pew Research, 69 percent of Christian evangelicals currently approve of how President Trump is fulfilling his duties in the nation’s highest office.

Yet fierce political divisions persist, even among like-minded Christian believers. Such divides cause some to avoid hearing out dissenting voices of faith. Still, many leaders have called for dialogue among those who disagree on prudential matters of politics.

A columnist for National Review and TIME Magazine, religious liberty attorney David French stands foremost among evangelical critics of the president.

PETITION DEFENDS PRO-TRUMP CHRISTIAN LEADER

In recent weeks, the American Family Association (AFA) called out French after a recent column criticized Franklin Graham. Son of the late evangelist, Graham today leads the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association as well as humanitarian aid group Samaritan’s Purse.

French’s column compared how Franklin Graham treated two political figures — President Trump and Democratic candidate Pete Buttigieg —…

Tributes paid to former Bishop of Motherwell

Bishop Devine served as Bishop of Motherwell for 30 years and died on Thursday at Wishaw General Hospital, North Lanarkshire, after a period of illness.

In 1960 he was ordained as a priest in Glasgow and became a bishop in 1977 when he was ordained by Thomas Joseph Winning – whose funeral sermon was conducted by Bishop Devine in 2003.

He served there for six years before moving to Motherwell in 1983, where he remained until retiring in 2013 on his 75th birthday, as is expected of bishops.

Bishop Joseph Toal, his successor as Bishop of Motherwell, said: “All in the Diocese of Motherwell feel the sadness of the death of our Bishop Eremitus, Rt Rev Joseph Devine, yesterday evening. We acknowledge and give thanks to God for his faithful and very full ministry as a bishop and priest.

“I heard of the news of his death in Wishaw General Hospital as I was about to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation, something which Bishop Devine celebrated hundreds of times, and it is for this that many in the Diocese remember him best.

“Through his years, Bishop Devine served the Catholic Church in Scotland through his full participation and valued contribution to the work of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland, particularly in regard to Catholic Education.

“Although he was very ill through the last days of his life, he was still very alert and very much himself. I suspect he would…

Groups are one of the most important factors in getting people to stick with a church. The community that is built in groups helps your church members become more well-rounded disciples. Today, we discuss five ways to make your groups more outwardly focused.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • I don’t understand why churches don’t invest more time and resources into the health of groups. Groups are huge factors in the health of churches.
  • A pastor doesn’t have to run the groups ministry in a church, but the pastor does need to be the champion for groups.
  • Goals can sometimes become idols, but goals also motivate people to put in the work required to meet them.
  • There is nothing better for a church to celebrate than someone coming to new life in Christ.

The five ways we discuss are:

  1. Recruit leaders for that purpose
  2. Lead groups to do ministry together
  3. Ask groups to establish faith goals
  4. Talk about it redundantly
  5. Celebrate a lot

Truck driver survives Missouri tornado: ‘I’m just glad God was with me tonight’

May 23, 2019 | Jefferson City, Mo. | Car Dealership

David Bell was in his truck on the side of a highway when a tornado struck Jefferson City, Missouri, Wednesday night. Houses collapsed around him. Poles snapped and transformers blew out. The tornado sent debris thirteen thousand feet into the air.

Bell had pulled over to the shoulder of Highway 54 with 44,500 pounds of soda in his trailer, not knowing he’d be in the path of the tornado. “That storm picked me up and slammed me down like I was nothing but a soda can,” he told CNN‘s John Berman yesterday.

He added: “It definitely gave me a new outlook on life. Very grateful that I’m alive. I should have been smarter and heeded the warnings. I’m just glad God was with me tonight.

“Rats are taking over New York City”

I can hear skeptics across the country asking, “But what about the people whose homes were destroyed? If we praise God for the good, shouldn’t we blame him for the bad?”

There’s much they could cite in today’s news.

According to the United Nations, drug-resistant infections could kill ten million people annually by 2050. A ten-foot great white shark has been spotted in the Long Island Sound.

And the New York Times reports that “rats are taking over New York City.” Increased construction is digging up burrows, forcing more rats into the open. Mild winters and more trash from tourists are contributing to the problem as well.

We wonder how God can be all-knowing, all-loving, and all-powerful when the planet he made is so broken. But we can also cite evidence for great good in the world and ask: If we blame God for the bad, shouldn’t we praise him for the good?

A seminary class in two minutes

This week, we’ve been discussing God’s call to defend our faith in an increasingly hostile culture. In academic terms, we’re exploring what is known as “apologetics,” from the Greek word apologia, “to make a defense.”…
