plastic kills one person every 30 seconds

The No Time to Waste report created by Tearfund in collaboration with Fauna & Flora International, the Institute of Development Studies and WasteAid, found that up to one million people a year are dying from diarrhoea, malaria, cancer and other illnesses caused by mismanaged plastic waste.

Sir David Attenborough has publicly backed the study, calling it the first of its kind to highlight the impact of plastic not just on wildlife but on the world’s poorest people.

Speaking to Premier, Tearfund’s Senior Advocacy Campaigner Ben Niblett said: “One in four of us around the world live somewhere where there’s no way to get rid of our rubbish. So when there is single use plastic people end up just living amongst piles of rubbish or burning it or dropping it in rivers.”

Tearfund are calling on Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Pepsi and Unilever to reduce the amount of single use plastic they sell to poor countries that do not have the infrastructure to safely dispose of it.

Mr Niblett said: “There

is no need for these companies with all the money and the power and the resources they have to be selling and dumping these products in these very poor and vulnerable communities.

“So we’re calling on them to change that. And we’re hoping the church will lead the way.”

The study also revealed that 400 million tonnes of greenhouses gases are emitted every year from global plastic…

Argentine Doctor on Trial for ‘Breach of Duties’ after He Refused to Perform an Abortion

Argentine Doctor on Trial for ‘Breach of Duties’ after He Refused to Perform an Abortion

An Argentine doctor is on trial for “obstetrical violence” and breach of duties after he refused to perform a legal abortion on a 19-year-old rape victim.

Dr. Leandro Rodriguez Lastra, an OB-GYN in the town of Cipolletti, Rio Negro, declined to perform the abortion for the woman in April 2017. The provincial Kirchnerist deputy Marta Milesi then sued Lastra.

According to LifeSiteNews.com, abortion is legal in Rio Negro in “borderline cases,” meaning when the pregnancy is the result of rape, when the mother’s life is in danger or when the mother is mentally handicapped and has been sexually abused.

During the trial, Lastra argued that he did not perform the abortion for medical reasons, although he has previously said he is pro-life.

“The justice system that gave rise to this is allowing doctor’s (decisions) to be questioned, it calls into question our attitude and our ability to work and ensure safety,” he said. “I know I didn’t commit any crime. I would act the same again because no child’s death is going to weigh on my conscience.”

The 19-year-old never filed a complaint about the doctor. She came to the hospital by ambulance, saying she was in pain after having taken an abortion drug. She had a fever and was also having contractions. Lastra confirmed that she was just over 22 weeks pregnant.

Lastra reportedly gave…

Catholic women urged to strike

Some of the protesters are refusing to enter church buildings or take part in Mass or other services.

The Catholic German Women’s Federation is supporting the strike.

Ute Hücker, who works for the organisation, has called for Catholic women in the UK to join the international protest.

“It’s necessary for the women (in Germany) to feel they’re not alone and know that there are a lot of friends around or in other countries and that we can do the work together,” she told Premier.

The strikers have adopted the name ‘Maria 2.0’. They carry banners with an image of Mary the Mother of Jesus will her lips sealed with tape, to symbolise a sense that the voice of women in the Catholic Church is not being properly heard.

Some of the protesters have held services in the open air near the church where they normally attend Mass. Other women have refused to act as readers or ministers of the Eucharist.

The strikers have called for greater equality in the Church between men and women.

Pope Francis has said he believes the Catholic Church will never ordain women priests but some of the protestors want the Roman Catholic Church to allow women to become deacons and priests.

Hücker told Premier she believes the Church needs to reform itself to sustain the faith of all Roman Catholics.

“It’s necessary that something is changing,” she…

Parents Sue School District after Teacher Repeatedly Singles Out 8-Year-Old, Asks If He’s Transgender

Parents Sue School District after Teacher Repeatedly Singles Out 8-Year-Old, Asks If He’s Transgender

An Oregon couple is suing their school district after discovering that their son’s teacher was repeatedly asking him if he was transgender.

The parents, who have wished to remain anonymous at this time, are suing the district for $1 million after it became apparent that a teacher was keeping their son back at recess “in an effort to promote (him) becoming transgender,” according to the lawsuit.

Not only was the teacher overly pushy, but they also provided the eight-year-old with a variety of reading materials, videos, and other resources that explained exactly what it means to be a trans person — something the parents deem wildly inappropriate.

According to the suit, the teacher would not allow the child to attend recess until he had looked through all the material, with the resources being provided by an “unknown non-school employee transgender individual.”

The parents were not informed about these disturbing interactions and only uncovered the concerning situation when they found the books in their son’s backpack.

According to the parents, the whole situation stemmed from the fact that their son suffered from stomach problem and was apprehensive to use the restroom. They believe that this caused the teacher to jump to the conclusion that the young man was struggling with his gender identity – an assertion that has…

‘As important as I regard Brexit, it does not affect my mortal soul’

Speaking at a public meeting, the 71-year-old was asked which change was more difficult.

She replied: “As important as I regard Brexit, it does not affect my mortal soul.”

Widdecombe will stand for the party headed up by Nigel Farage in the European elections on 23 May.

If elected, she’d represent South West England in the European Parliament should the UK not leave the EU later this year.

She’s said her decision to stand came about as a result of the government’s failure to deliver Brexit.

“Both major parties need a seismic shock,” she said.

The Brexit Party currently leads the polls for the European elections with 34 per cent of the YouGov vote.

The Conservatives were fifth with just ten per cent.

Christian Falsely Imprisoned in India for Over 10 Years Is Let Out on Bail

Christian Falsely Imprisoned in India for Over 10 Years Is Let Out on Bail

India’s Supreme Court has granted bail to a man falsely accused of murdering a Hindu leader some ten years ago. Gornath Chalenseth was finally released from prison May 9 after spending over a decade behind bars.

Chalenseth, along with Bhaskar Sunamajhi, Bijay Kumar Sanseth, Budhadeb Nayak, Durjo Sunamajhi, Munda Badamajhi and Sanathan Badamajhi was jailed after being convicted of murdering Hindu monk Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four others in August 2008.

Saraswati’s death sparked a massive backlash of anti-Christian violence, resulting in the deaths of several believers and the burning down of around 8,400 homes and 360 churches. As is often seen in these types of religiously-charged criminal cases across India, the men were convicted on the basis of fabricated evidence.

Unfortunately, despite being released on bail, Chalenseth is still not out of danger. He will now face an appeal that will determine whether or not he spends the rest of their life in prison, or worse.

Still, according to a lawyer representing the men, bail is still a welcome reprieve.

“It is a huge victory for these hapless men who don’t have the resources or knowledge to fight for their freedom in India’s complicated judicial system,” said attorney Dibakar Parichha, according to ucanews.com.

A journalist who has been relentlessly campaigning for the release of the…

The way churches hire staff is changing. Today we begin a three-part series on emerging trends in the church with a discussion on church staffing.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • When you have a staff opening in the church, always evaluate the role and the needs of the church before making a hire for that same position. Things may need to change.
  • Always give clarity to a role when you create a new position on staff.
  • You don’t really know someone until you work with them or marry them.
  • One of the primary roles of the church is to call out the called.

The seven points we discuss are:

  1. An example of the trend
  2. Most of the the staff come from within the church
  3. Common commitment is 10 hours a week
  4. One-year commitments are common
  5. Able to see giftedness and talent first hand
  6. Training and education are widely available
  7. Able to determine the efficacy of a ministry

The surprising legacy of Doris Day: Why service changes the world

Doris Day | 1955

She was voted Top Box-Office Female Star for four straight years during the 1960s. Her television appearances spanned from 1949 to 2009. She received lifetime achievement awards from the Grammys and the Academy Awards. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The killer who became a servant

On the opposite side of the social spectrum, Christopher Smith grew up in Oakland, where he played with a girl in his neighborhood named LoEshé Lacy. Her first name was a combination of two words from Nigerian dialects that in English mean “to love” and “life.”

Smith came from a dysfunctional family and spent time in foster care before running with local gangs. On October 20, 1997, seeking to avenge the shooting of one of his friends by a rival gang, he spotted a car he thought was driven by one of his intended targets. He and three other gang members opened fire.

He did not know that LoEshé was inside. He learned the next morning that he had killed his childhood friend.

Sentenced to twenty years to life, Smith began attending group meetings in prison. He told CNN that he began examining his behavior and the harm he had done. Once he held himself accountable for his actions and could forgive himself, he says, “I felt like now I could go from being an offender to being a servant.”

Then came the day in April 2018 when LoEshé’s father, Donald Lacy, met with Smith and forgave him….

It Is Finished (Part 1)

A Promise For You From Bible Promises: [14/MAY/2019]

Topic: It Is Finished (Part 1)

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed. his head, and gave up the ghost. John 19:30.

Read: John 17:1-9

During the excruciating pain on the cross to purchase the salvation of the world through His precious blood, Jesus cried aloud, “I thirst”. In response to His cry, He was given vinegar (sour wine) and When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head and gave up the ghost. When He said, it is finished He gave up the ghost leaving no explanation as to what is finished behind.

In verse 4 of John chapter 17, Jesus said, I have glorified thee on the earth: I have FINISHED the WORK which thou gavest me to do. What is the work He finished before giving up the ghost on the cross? Let’s look at three of this work, but today, we shall look at one.

1) The work of sin was finished. Sin (Satanic Identity Number) separated man from God in the garden of Eden and Matthew 1:21 says, “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins”. 1 John 3:8 says the devil sinned from the beginning and this is the reason Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil which sin is one of them. It is finished means, Completed; ended; done; perfected. Sin is finished by Jesus, therefore sin should not have dominion over you anymore because whatever is finished is completely finished. Knowing that sin is finished is great but embracing this truth by giving your life to Jesus who has finished this is greater.

Bible Promises Thought:
Sin dominates its host. Salvation frees it willing candidates

…[Love] is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly.… — 1 Corinthians 13:5 (AMPC)

Being courteous is a way to show kindness and respect for others. One way to be courteous is to always say “please” and “thank you.” These are two forms of common courtesy that I encourage you to practice.

I want to especially encourage you to be courteous at home with your family. I am trying to remember to always say “please” when I ask Dave to do something for me, and “thank you” when he has done it.

It is very important that we don’t take our loved ones for granted. Having good manners in public should be an overflow of what we normally do at home behind closed doors.

Love is not rude, according to 1 Corinthians 13:5. Rudeness usually results from selfishness, and one way to fight it is to use good manners at all times. Our society is filled with rudeness, harshness, and crudeness, but this does not display the character of God.

Jesus said He is “not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing” (Matthew 11:30 AMPC), and we need to follow His example.

We certainly need to make a point of being thankful and expressing our gratitude. In several places, the Bible makes the point that we are to be thankful and say so. We may think we are thankful, grateful people, but what is in the heart does come out of our mouths (see Matthew 12:34). If we are indeed appreciative, expressing thanks should come naturally for us.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me today to show courtesy—kindness and respect—with everyone around me. I don’t want to be selfish or rude. Please continue to change me and make me more like Jesus. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

From Joyce Meyer’s Ministries.
