GAFCON confirms it will boycott Lambeth conference of bishops

Anglicans on both sides of the debate about sexuality within the church are unhappy with plans for the Lambeth Conference in 2020, with some, including the Bishop of Liverpool, Rt Rev Paul Bayes, saying their partners will not come, in protest at same-sex bishops not being allowed to bring their partners.

Current Church of England doctrine states that clergy cannot conduct a same-sex wedding and the rules on whether clergy can marry a same-sex partner varies in different countries, with the Episcopal Church in the US allowing same-sex marriage since 2015, but in England only civil partnerships are allowed, on the assumption that they remain celibate, and marriage is not.

Aside from the issue of gay partners attending, there are complaints that clergy in same-sex partnerships are being allowed to attend themselves.

GAFCON (Global Anglican Future Conference), a group of Anglicans who say they ‘work to guard and proclaim the unchanging, transforming Gospel through biblically faithful preaching and teaching’, are the main voice of this concern.

In June 2018, their members gathered in Jerusalem and called on the Archbishop of Canterbury, Most Rev Justin Welby, “not to invite bishops of those Provinces which have endorsed by word or deed sexual practices which are in contradiction to the teaching of Scripture and Resolution I.10 of the 1998 Lambeth Conference,…

Three Christians Killed in Ambush Attacks near Jos, Nigeria

Three Christians Killed in Ambush Attacks near Jos, Nigeria

JOSNigeria, May 6, 2019 (Morning Star News) – Suspected Muslim Fulani herdsmen ambushed and killed a 26-year-old Catholic on Thursday (May 2) in north-central Nigeria and two other Christians in the same manner on April 27, sources said.

After a herdsmen assault in March 2018 that left 27 Christians dead in the predominantly Christian community of Dong village north of Jos, assailants on Thursday (May 2) killed David Musa, 26, at 5:25 p.m., said Nuhu Ako, 42-year-old Christian youth leader at the area’s St. Monica’s Catholic Church.

“We heard the sound of gunshots around the stream west of Dong village, where you’re now talking to us,” Ako told Morning Star News. “We rushed there to find out what happened and found again the killing of a member of our community.”

As Muslim Fulani herdsmen have been attacking Dong and Nzehrivoh villages for two years, Ako and other Christians suspect they are behind the slaying of Musa and the April 27 killing of Sunday Adi, 45, and Jonathan Joseph, 29, at 7:25 p.m. on that Saturday.

“We were returning to Dong village after the day’s work at Nzerivoh village, our former village where we were displaced last year, and we heard gunshots,” he said. “We decided not to proceed with our movement and remained where we were. A few moments afterwards, two people riding on a motorbike came to where we were and told us that they…

Israel Folau’s hearing on hell comments extended after stalemate

Israel Folou, who signed a four-year deal with the Waratahs in Sydney in March, could have his contract with Rugby Australia ended because he posted a picture on instagram saying that homosexuals, among others, would face hell unless they repented to Jesus.

The Australian rugby player also listed atheists, drunks, idolaters, adulterers, liars and fornicators, calling on people to repent, saying ‘Only Jesus saves!’

Folou’s comments sparked controversy and threats from Rugby Australia about his continuation as a national star as he had had warnings about similar comments already.

The code of conduct hearing, which Folou requested, was held at Rugby Australia’s headquarters in Sydney and evidence was provided by Rugby Australia chief Raelene Castle and Wallabies coach Michael Cheika.

The hearing was only meant to last one day, with Sunday reserved incase it dragged on.

After 15 hours, no conclusion was made about his future, with Waratahs player Andrew Hore also called for evidence on Sunday.

They will now reconvene on Tuesday.

Folou’s solicitors are arguing that he was quoting a Bible passage and that the comments weren’t his direct words. They also say there is no social media clause in his contract.

The Wallabies coach said he was unlikely to be selected to play again and Rugby Australia believe he has breached player code of conduct and social media…

Harvest Bible Chapel Apologizes as it Installs New Elder Board

Harvest Bible Chapel Apologizes as it Installs New Elder Board

CHICAGO (RNS) — Harvest Bible Chapel has apologized both privately and publicly to a freelance journalist and two bloggers whom it sued last fall.

The lawsuit, which also included the bloggers’ wives, had claimed the journalist and bloggers defamed the Chicago-area megachurch. The lawsuit later was dropped.

Not long afterward, Harvest fired founding pastor Rev. James MacDonald, who had claimed the suit was biblical.

“With a new church leadership team and new elder board now in place, along with this apology and the restitution Harvest has made/offered to each of you, we hope this will start the healing process between each of you and Harvest,” reads the apology posted on journalist Julie Roys’ website.

The move comes as Harvest transitions to a new board of elders this week and prepares to move forward under new leaders.

Roys — who was sued while investigating trouble at Harvest, which she later wrote about for World Magazine, an evangelical Christian publication — said she received the apology via email from church elders on Tuesday (April 30).

In the email, Harvest elders asked for forgiveness and admitted they never should have sued Roys, Elephant’s Debt bloggers Scott Bryant and Ryan Mahoney or Bryant’s and Mahoney’s wives.

“While at the time we thought we were acting in the best interests of the church, we now realize this lawsuit, while…

Report highlights positive impact of university chaplains

Establishments with pastoral staff on campus showed improvements in the atmosphere and a sense of community.

The report, which was put together by Coventry, Durham and Canterbury Christ Church Universities and the Church of England is recommending universities increase their funding for chaplains.

374 chaplains were questioned about their work, relationship with university and the impact of their chaplaincy.

One of the report’s co-authors, Dr Kristin Aune, Professor of Sociology of Religion at Coventry University, said: “Our research has found that chaplains are doing a great job supporting students pastorally and responding to an increasingly multi-faith environment.

“One of our 15 recommendations is that universities increase their funding for chaplaincy to continue this vital service.”

Data collected in 2017 showed each university has, on average, ten chaplains. Two thirds are Christian.

Pope Francis urges Bulgarians to open their hearts to migrants

As he arrived in the Balkan nation for a two-day visit, Francis “respectfully suggested” that Bulgarians recognise that migrants are fleeing war, conflict or dire poverty “to find new opportunities in life or simply a safe refuge”.

“To all Bulgarians, who are familiar with the drama of emigration, I respectfully suggest that you not close your eyes, your hearts or your hands, in accordance with your best tradition, to those who knock at your door,” he told government officials at the presidential palace in Sofia, the capital.

Bulgaria’s centre-right, pro-Brussels coalition government includes three nationalist, anti-migrant parties.

The government has called for the European Union to close borders to migrants and has sealed off its own border to Turkey with a barbed-wire fence.

But the country is also losing its own population at a faster clip than any other nation, according to the UN.

Its current population of seven million is expected to dwindle to 5.4 million by 2050 and to 3.9 million by the end of the century.

The Argentine pope has made the plight of migrants and refugees a hallmark of his papacy, urging governments to build bridges, not walls, and to do what they can to welcome and integrate refugees.

His visit falls just three weeks before European Parliament elections across the EU’s 28 nations in which nationalist, anti-migrant parties are expected to make…

Christians encouraged to use Ramadan to pray for Muslims

The Islamic month of fasting began on Monday and runs until the fourth of June.

Christian charity Interserve is calling on believers to pray for the protection of the Muslim community and that they would come to know Jesus.

In a statement, it said: “When reading stories in the news, like that of the tragic shootings at the Mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, it is very easy to feel numb and hopeless.

“Sadly since that dark day on 15 March there has been a rise in Anti Muslim hate Crimes in the UK.

“Inaction is clearly not the answer; a response is needed, a raising up of prayer. If we do not pray then prejudice will gain power, fear will fester and relationships built across divides will die.”

The charity is encouraging Christians to download a prayer guide which over a million people around the world are expected to use across 37 languages.

The Kentucky Derby and Rachel Held Evans: A faith that changes everything

Country House won the Kentucky Derby last Saturday. At sixty-five-to-one odds, he was the second-biggest long shot ever to win America’s most famous horserace. The way he won was even more unprecedented.

Maximum Security finished first but was later disqualified for veering out of his path on the final turn. Country House, after finishing in second place, was then declared the winner. This was the first time in Derby history that a foul voided an apparent winner.

Whether we know much about horse racing or not, Americans care about the Kentucky Derby. We are fascinated by the race itself, often billed as “the most exciting two minutes in sport,” but we are also captivated by the Derby’s heritage.

The race has been run every consecutive year since 1875. Churchill Downs, the location of the Derby, was organized by Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr., grandson of William Clark (of the Lewis and Clark Expedition). Mint julips, lavish hats and clothing, and the playing of “My Old Kentucky Home” are part of the annual tradition.

Mother’s Day and Memorial Day

Other traditions are making news as well.

Ramadan began last night. I have been in the Middle East many times during this sacred month on the Islamic calendar. It is fascinating to watch Muslims flock to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem and to observe their passion for their faith.

By contrast, Jews in Israel observed Holocaust Remembrance Day last Thursday. (Click here for my thoughts on this somber tradition.) In two days, Israelis hold their Memorial Day, remembering the country’s fallen soldiers and police as well as victims of terrorist acts. The following day, the nation celebrates its independence.

In the US, next Sunday is Mother’s Day. Monday, May 27, is our Memorial Day, remembering those who died in the service of our country.

Why are such traditions so important to us? The answer is significant not just for our culture but also for our faith….

Christian Health and Wellbeing Centre placed in administration following financial challenges

Last month it was announced it would close in the summer, but a statement on the centre’s website says the closure has been moved forward.

The Dorothy Kerin Trust previously said it has faced considerable financial challenges for a number of years and has come to the conclusion that the current situation is “untenable”.

In a statement, the trustees said: “Despite sporadic sizeable single donations and legacies, there has also been a significant shortfall in reaching fundraising targets.

“On top of this, the cost of ensuring compliance with Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulations continues to grow, and this has also been a further contributory factor in the number of burdens on the Trust’s limited resources.

“All of these issues combined have led to Burrswood facing an unsustainable financial position.”

Burswood was founded in 1948, by Dorothy Kerin who experienced miraculous physical healing.

She wanted to open a centre dedicated to ‘whole person care’ which addressed Healthcare, Social Care and Spiritual Wellbeing services.

It’s unknown what will happen to the building.

Mark Newman and Vincent Green of Crowe UK LLP have been appointed joint administrators of The Dorothy Kerin Trust.

Calm urged as Anglican split over sexuality threatens to deepen

Bishops from across the world are due to come together for the once a decade Lambeth Conference but there’s concern many will boycott.

Conservative group GAFCON says its bishops won’t attend due to the fact gay bishops will be permitted to attend.

Conservatives within the Church are also unhappy at how they’ve been portrayed by the Anglican Communion.

Speaking at the Anglican Consultative Council last week, Archbishop Josiah Idowu-Fearon (pictured below right) said the divide in the Church was due to “largely autocratic Primates and bishops in the Global South who do not behave as Anglicans”.

The Evangelical Fellowship in the Anglican Communion (EFAC) has written to him to ask him to reconsider his words.

www.archbishopofcanterbury.org

Speaking to Premier, EFAC trustee Carl Hughes said: “You have to be realistic that there is a clear disagreement about human sexuality from a doctrinal point of view, across the Anglican Communion.

“What I think we were concerned about, as trustees, when we read what Archbishop Josiah said, was a suggestion that it was actually the groups like EFAC and GAFCON, who have held to the traditional teaching of the Church, that it is these groups that have moved away from the Anglican Communion whereas, actually, the differences that have arisen all started with the Episcopal Church in the United States acting independently…
