In a Time of Rising Suicide, Religious Communities Move Beyond Condemnation to Care

(RNS) — When Andy and Tina Plank discovered that their son Sam had killed himself, one of their first calls was to the minister of their church.

As soon as he got the news, J.C. Austin dropped everything and met them at the hospital.

Newly installed as senior pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, Pa., Austin had only been working there for a few months, a relative newcomer who had arrived in the wake of a bitter internal feud over doctrine and practice that split the congregation.

Now he had to step in to bring comfort to a family at the worst moment of their lives.

In the midst of the shock and pain that often attends such unexpected deaths, it’s crucial that clergy and congregants reach out to those left behind, offering a message of grace and hope rather than one of rejection and condemnation, Austin said.

“The church has to be right in the middle of offering pastoral care to those impacted,” he said.

Offering pastoral care included helping the Planks tell the story of their son’s life and death.

A freshman at Kutztown University who had only been in college for a week, Sam Plank was 18 when he died. His story didn’t have to be public: Many aren’t. But his parents decided almost as soon as the tragedy occurred to talk candidly about how their son died.

“Part of my healing journey,” said Tina Plank, “is…

Leader of bombed evangelical church in Sri Lanka offers forgiveness to attackers

Pastor Roshan Mahesen also spoke of his commitment to continue the church’s mission.

Speaking in London this week Pastor Roshan said: “We are hurt. We are angry also, but still, as the senior pastor of Zion Church Batticaloa, the whole congregation and every family affected, we say to the suicide bomber, and also to the group that sent the suicide bomber, that we love you and we forgive you, no matter what you have done to us, we love you, because we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Jesus Christ on the Cross, he said father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing. We also, who follow the footsteps of Jesus Christ, we say, for the Lord forgive these people.”

In the video shared by Sri Lankan Christian ministry ‘The Life’, Pastor Roshan said: “I want to take this opportunity to thank every church around the world, every believer, every person known to me and unknown to me who has contacted me, calling me, sending messages of condolences, and then words of encouragement.

“I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, every word you speak brings such comfort and strength. We will stand and continue what the lord has purposed in our life and we are ready, and we will continue to fulfil the mission the Lord has given us.”

Pastor Roshan was interviewed by Pastor Chrishanthy Sathiyaraj, a leader of a Sri Lankan church with…

With the criticisms pastors get, it can be easy to have a quick temper. Today, we discuss reasons for losing your temper so that pastors may recognize them and better deal with them.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • Losing your temper as a pastor never results in something good.
  • You should defend your family if they’re attacked, but you have to do it while controlling your temper.
  • Pastors should be aware of what causes them to lose their temper in order to better control it.
  • The #1 rule for guest speakers is to stay within your allotted timeframe.

The six reasons that we discuss are:

  1. Their family members are attacked.
  2. They are tired.
  3. Their character is questioned.
  4. They receive one more criticism.
  5. They get blamed over things they cannot control.
  6. They have not taken a break.

How to pray for the Sri Lankan church

Bombers targeted churches and hotels on Easter Sunday, killing around 250 people and injuring hundreds more.

Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, the current Catholic Archbishop of Colombo, has appealed to priests not to conduct mass at churches until further notice.

Dr KP Yohannan, director of the evangelistic charity Gospel For Asia told Premier: “Sri Lanka has experienced years and years of civil war and tens of thousands being murdered, yet this one incident overshadows everything.

“In terms of the the shock and the magnitude of the day it happened, the church was packed with people and the suicide bomber ended up having these two huge blasts and 360 people died and tens of hundreds were injured. It’s shaken the island like never before.”

He was speaking before the death toll was revised down due to parts of the same body being counted separately.

Dr KP explained that Gospel for Asia lost a couple of people in the incident and that the bombers had planted two bombs right in front of their office and church “by God’s grace that was discovered and didn’t go off.

“I was doing the Easter service while this news broke out and you can imagine what a shock it was for everybody. And all we can do is, and we don’t understand all of this, pray for this nation and the people and this suffering and what we can do is give some hope and help in the midst of pain.”

Kyler Murray makes history: The importance of finishing well

The Arizona Cardinals made Kyler Murray the first pick in last night’s NFL draft. Murray is the first player to be selected in the first round by both the National Football League and Major League Baseball. (He was drafted ninth by the Oakland Athletics last June.)

Murray is obviously an amazing athlete, but the history of first picks in the NFL is not entirely encouraging.

The first player ever drafted in the NFL was Jay Berwanger in 1936. The team would not agree to his contract terms, so he never played a down in the league. Tom Cousineau was the first overall pick in 1979, but he chose to play in Canada instead and never played for the team that drafted him.

Steve Emtman was drafted first in 1992, but injuries cut short his career. Same for Ki-Jana Carter, drafted first in 1995, and for Courtney Brown, drafted first in 2000.

This trend shows that it’s not where you’re drafted but how long and well you play that counts. The same is true in life.

Shifting from “us” to “me”

I attended an event in Dallas yesterday morning featuring New York Times columnist and bestselling author David Brooks. I have admired Brooks’ work for years and consider him one of the most significant public intellectuals in America today.

Brooks spent much of his time discussing the shift in culture he has witnessed. In the 1950s, American life was communal. People lived in neighborhoods in which they did life together. Family, church, and collective rituals such as baptisms, weddings, and other life passages framed our experience.

In the 1960s, we shifted from “us” to “me.” Truth is what I say it is; morality is what works for me without harming you.

According to Brooks, we’ve now “run out the string” on self-centered living and are facing an epidemic of loneliness as a result. The opioid crisis, escalating suicide rates, and plethora of social ills we face are symptoms of this underlying disease.

Climbing…

Christians back plan for health warnings on betting machines

James Mildred from Christian Action, Research and Education (CARE) told Premier, “this move hugely welcome and long overdue.

“Making punters more aware of the risks associated with gambling is a key way of protecting people from the harms caused by gambling addiction.”

The proposal for health warnings is part of a three-year strategy announced by the Gambling Commission which will treat problem gambling as a public health issue.

The National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms aims to co-ordinate work to tackle the problems caused by the betting industry.

As a first step, Public Health England will publish its first review of evidence on health harms relating to gambling in spring next year.

Claire Murdoch, national director for mental health at NHS England, said: “There is increasing evidence of a link between problem gambling and stress, depression and other mental health issues and this is an important step in the battle to reduce the harm caused.

“The NHS is playing its part with the Long Term Plan committing to an increase in mental health services for patients with a gambling problem, but gambling addiction is not just the NHS’s problem – it is an issue for the whole of society affecting people of all ages and backgrounds which is why it is everyone’s responsibility to act.”

The strategy aims to create a partnership of health bodies, charities, regulators and…

Joyce Meyer Devotional 26 April 2019 — One Good Choice After Another

Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. — Proverbs 4:25

Are you enjoying the life and blessings of God in your everyday life? Or have you made a series of choices resulting in disappointment, pain, or feeling that everything you do requires great effort and produces little reward? Don’t spend your time and energy mourning all the bad decisions you have made; just start making good ones. There is hope for you!

The way to overcome the results of a series of bad choices is through a series of right choices. The only way to walk out of trouble is to do the opposite of whatever you did to get into trouble—one choice at a time.

Maybe the circumstances of your life right now are the direct result of a series of bad choices you have made. You may be in debt because you have made a lot of bad choices with money. You may be lonely because of a series of bad choices in relationships or in the way you treat people. You may be sick because of a series of unhealthy choices: eating junk food, not getting enough rest, or abusing your body through working too much and not having enough balance in your life.

You cannot make a series of bad choices that result in significant problems and then make one good choice and expect all the results of all those bad choices to go away. You did not get into deep trouble through one bad choice; you got into trouble through a series of bad choices. If you really want your life to change for the better, you will need to make one good choice after another, over a period of time, just as consistently as you made the negative choices that produced negative results.

No matter what kind of trouble or difficulty you got yourself into, you can still have a blessed life. You cannot do anything about what is behind you, but you can do a great deal about what lies ahead of you. God is a redeemer, and He will always give you another chance.

Trust in Him If you have a situation that is too big for you to solve, then you are material for a miracle. Invite God to get involved, trust in and follow His directions, make one good choice after another, and you will see amazing results.

Prayer Starter: Father, thank You for Your wisdom and guidance to make good choices for my life. Please help me to leave past disappointments behind and begin, one by one, to make decisions that will bring a harvest of good things into my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

TOPIC: The Hope of Resurrection

READ: 1 Corinthians 15:12-28 New King James Version (NKJV)

  1. Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
  2. But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen.
  3. And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty.
  4. Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise.
  5. For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen.
  6. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!
  7. Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.
  8. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.
  9. But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
  10. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead.
  11. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.
  12. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.
  13. Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power.
  14. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet.
  15. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.
  16. For “He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him, ” it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted.
  17. Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all.

THE MESSAGE:

Paul, in today’s passage, is gradually getting to the conclusion of this first letter to the Corinthian church. But he still had a very critical issue to address: the resurrection of the dead. It appears the Christians at Corinth were becoming increasingly confused about what happens after death. Many of them were beginning to be deceived by the lie of the devil that life on earth is all there is.

The danger, therefore, was for people to begin to live lives anyhow, assuming that there will be no judgment after death since there is no resurrection of the dead!
God inspired the Apostle Paul to address this matter. God’s verdict is very clear: if Jesus Christ rose from the dead (and He did), then definitely humanity will also rise from the dead – some to honour, some to dishonour (John 6:39-54; Matthew 16:24-27).

The truth is that if life were to end only on this earth, Jesus would not have bothered to come and to lay down His life for the world. But He died so that we who trust in Him might have hope, not only for this life, but also for the life after resurrection.

Let us, therefore, live each day as a rehearsal for the life to be spent in eternity with Christ.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the sacrifices of Your Son, Jesus Christ for me. Help me to live each day with eternity in mind.
